Rita Jokinen marketing assistant, favourite of the audience in the national Miss Suomi 2015 beauty pageant

There’s always something going on in Seinäjoki. The true Seinäjoki stands for a balanced mix of city and nature.

What should you see and do in Seinäjoki? Read our tips and find your own favourites!

1. What is the best place in Seinäjoki in your opinion? – I spend a lot of spare time exercising and really enjoy the running tracks by the Frami river bank. There are several kilometres of running terrain right next to Seinäjoki city centre which is great! In summer you can also enjoy the river bank from the terraces of ship restaurant Barpuuri and brewery restaurant Mallaskosken Panimoravintola. 2. What kind of gifts would you bring with you from Seinäjoki? – Event tickets, absolutely! There’s always something going on in Seinäjoki. There is something for everyone in the array of festivals and trade fairs each month. 3. Where can you see or experience the “true” Seinäjoki? – For me, the true Seinäjoki stands for a balanced mix of city and nature. The running terrain and lean-tos at Jouppiska are good places to escape urban life. If you prefer a relaxed city atmosphere and locally produced, Ostrobothian food, you will enjoy the Uppalan Kartano manor or the Juurella restaurant, where you will not only get good service, but also interesting information on from where the food originates and how it is prepared. 4. Where should you go to party? – In the weekends, you will find the largest portion of the city’s party people at the Ilona and Karma bars. In summer people also visit the different festivals. One of the strongest newcomers in the festival portfolio of Seinäjoki is Solar Sound Festival at the end of July. 5

Simo Valakari head coach of the SJK football club 1. Seinäjoki has a brand new football stadium. How does this gain the team and your games? – The OmaSp Stadion is our home away from home. It means a great deal to the entire club and the team. I think it’s a cultural achievement. We can practice and play in the same place and we consider it our stronghold. Circumstances are crucial in football. The audience can now get up close to the game,

which heightens the atmosphere both on the field and in the audience. This gives the extra spark to our game. The stadium enables us to play euro matches in Seinäjoki, which wasn’t possible before. Now we get the home ground advantage also in these games. 2. There are several championship series teams in Seinäjoki. What is the sports profile of Seinäjoki? – Seinäjoki is an excellent city for sports. Over the last few years, a lot has been invested in the conditions, so that the athletes can focus on their sport. Seinäjoki also has long sporting traditions and we back each The football other up. Together we are strong, and now that the facilities are in top form, stadium is a cultu Seinäjoki will have many successful ral achievement. athletes in the future, too. 3. In which sport will Seinäjoki win the next Finnish championship? Which sport would you like to try next? – The next Finnish championship will most likely be won in an individual sport. Among the team sports, field hockey or American football might win the championship this summer. Our own championship is in the autumn. – I’d like to try wrestling sometime. I’ve always liked to battle. 4. Finish this sentence: The people of Seinäjoki have gone crazy about football when… – SJK is visible on the street every day. People come up to talk from everywhere and they are wearing SJK scarfs. You can see how much SJK really means to them. It also counts for something that so many local entrepreneurs are supporting us. 5. Once you get off the field, where do you spend your spare time in Seinäjoki? – I try to stay at home with my family and get away from football for a while, which is not easy. I also go for runs in the area of Kyrkösjärvi lake, where there are excellent views and running tracks.

Anselmi 7 years

The soft ice vans are the best.

Sami Rumpunen festival manager of Provinssi

The public events – our pride and joy. 1. What makes Seinäjoki such an excellent city for festivals and events? – Our traditions make Seinäjoki a genuine venue for events. Seinäjoki has been known all over Finland for its legendary music events since the early 80s. I dare claim that to this day particularly Provinssi and the Tango Festival are the first things that come to mind about Seinäjoki. These events are also the pride and joy of people from Seinäjoki. It is a matter of honour to arrange them. The significance of these events is also recognized at the city hall and by the local politicians. 2. Seinäjoki is the city of rhythm music. How does this show? – Apart from the four large festivals, thanks to Rytmikorjaamo and Bar15, when it comes to live music Seinäjoki is one of the most active

1. Why do you like visiting the city centre? – Because there are many ice cream vans. What I like best about Seinäjoki city centre is walking and enjoying the view. 2. Where is the best place for ice cream? – The Pehmis (soft ice) vans, there are a lot of them. 3. Your favourite restaurant? – Pizzeria Piikki (at Epstori). 4. What is there to do in Seinäjoki? – Glow bowling is the best. I also like the coding club at the Apila library.

cities in relation to the population. We have excellent education and research in the music business, thanks to the University of the Arts, the university of applied sciences, the Rytmi-instituutti and Louhimo music institutes, and many others. In my mind, Seinäjoki sounds course, genuine, personal and very catchy. 3. What should every festival visitor know about or do in Seinäjoki? – Provinssi visitors appreciate the fast and easy access to the city, and the relatively carefree way you can move about between the festival and the services in the city. I’d especially like to recommend the excellent beer and street food selection at Mallas Kabacka, and the exquisite tastes of restaurant Juurella – although you can also try the latter at the Provinssi festival! 4. What is your best festival memory? – At the first Provinssi arranged by Selmu in 1993, my wristband snapped and disappeared when I crowd surfed during the Bad Religion show. With my tail between my legs, I went to the info desk to relate this episode, and was handed a new wristband, no further questions asked. A party for the people at its very best!

THE AALTO LIBRARY AND APILA EVENTS

The Aalto library went into bloom once again, when it reopened after a complete restoration in spring 2015. The restoration was thorough, respecting the signature of Aalto in countless details, but also keeping in mind the needs of the customers and modern library technology. Next door to the Aalto library lies the Apila library designed by the JKMM architects. The building was nominated for the Finlandia Prize for Architecture. The library, which is known for its bold design, has become a meeting place and public living room for the people in the city.
