Through the summer of 2008, ten students from Srishti worked on a BioArt project for the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition hosted by MIT, Boston.

enzyme. We have expressed this gene in different strains of E. coli. Geosmin is responsible for producing the earthy smell when rain falls after a dry spell of weather.

As amateurs and “outsiders” to Science, we tried to bring our training in the arts and design to synthetic biology. We learnt the tools and techniques of synthetic biology and developed a piece of life which reflects our concerns, namely, the cultural, ethical and aesthetic implications of Synthetic Biology.

Through the summer, we went around to other schools and colleges such as a school for the urban poor (Drishya) and another design school (NID) and tried to explain to them what we were doing.

Most of them were intrigued and wanted to participate. We have formed a Facebook group - iGEM India for all Indian iGEM teams to use as a forum and hopefully we will have more discussions there.

Using a DIY approach and getting our hands “wet” was a critical element in the learning process. Our construct synthesizes Geosmin, an enzyme normally produced by cyanobacteria and actinobacteria. The biosynthesis of geosmin from farnesyl diphosphate is catalyzed by a single enzyme germacradienol/germacrene D synthase. E.coli, does not bear a gene that codes for this

We also helped create an online resource for artists/designers that want to get involved with biotechnology called Hackteria. Lastly, we have designed a creative commons/open source Synthetic Biology handbook for Artists and Designers.

These interactive projects were designed and fabricated for astronomy enthusiasts visiting Kalpaneya Yatre 2010, a festival of astronomy in Bangalore, India. It was a 10 day exhibition hosted by the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, designed by my college,the Srishti School of Art, Design and Techonolgy and supported by the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Indian Space Research Organisation, and the Raman Research Institute. The exhibition was visited by about 2000 people per day, on average. The following were my projects:

The sunpainting activity lets people paint with light coloured in the seven colours of the rainbow.

The object scanner is an installation that tells users what elements various objects are made of and which stars they originated from. The information was coded into the program and was displayed when triggered by an RFID token attached to the objects.

The Planetary Weighing Scale tells the user how much he or she weighs on each of the different planets in our solar system and provides a printout of the weights on insertion of an RFID Token.

This was a fun activity that allowed users, especially children, to paint with light on a projected digital screen in the seven colours of the rainbow (VIBGYOR). The users could choose their colour by spinning the disc (1) on the table beside the screen. The table had a lit glass top (2) which was illuminated with the seven colours of the rainbow. Users could look at their colour through a window (3) in the disc and a colour sensor (4) below the disc picked up the colour. Once the colour was chosen, users could paint on the screen using the pen (5). The pen works with IR tracking technology through a Wiimote (6) using the Wiimote Whiteboard application by Johnny Chung Lee. All data was transmitted wirelessly using ZigBee radio modules (7).

The paint program was written in the programming language Processing and the hardware was controlled with the Arduino microcontroller.

Through the course of the Astrofest, my team mate and I, along with our facilitator realized that two of the projects we were designing had the potential to become products. We came up with a few potential areas in which similar technology could be used. For the Sunpainting Activity, they were, class room education, non destructive public graffiti, and a home based paint-on-the-wall application for children. For the Object Scanner, they were a music store CD/DVD information display system and a ‘class room, physical object, teacher supported, cloud based search engine.’

To validate these areas we used an experimental user research method. We made simple comic strips outlining the storyboard of the various interactions, and showed them to pairs of potential users, frame by frame and as objectively as possible matched their emotions to a large set of facial expressions we had prepared. The purpose of the exercise was to capture a visual ‘map’ of emotions that wasn’t tainted by the note takers perception of the expression (confused, irritated etc.) We felt a camera would be too obtrusive, as the interviews were quite short. After the emotion mapping exercise, we asked the participants to recount the story they saw in the comic strips to their partner to account for misunderstanding (if any) of the concept in the study.

The conversation was recorded on an mp3 player (with the participants consent) for future reference. The study helped us focus on the educational applications of our technology, as that was what it seemed users were most excited and interested by.

To carry forward the designs, we conducted a few interviews with middle school teachers who had access to technology, asking them where it restricted them, and what they wished they could do with such technology.

The National Innovation Foundation (NIF), an organization that supports grass roots innovation, heard of our products (Sunpainting and Object Scanner) and were interested in a demo. They invited us to display our prototypes at the Ignite 2010 competition award ceremony.

Ignite is a competition hosted by NIF and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad (IIM-A) that awards students from grade one to twelve that submit innovative concepts and ideas. The awards are presented by former Indian President Dr. APJ Adbul Kalam, an internationally acclaimed scientist and author. Our object scanner system was used to display the awardees’ inventions as they walked on stage to receive their awards.

The sunpainting prototype was demoed to NIF. At NIF we were allowed to use the Fab Lab that was setup by MIT, Boston to further prototype our products. Intrigued by the possibilities, NIF looked to further collaborate with us and our college on a more formal level by signing an MOU.

This is a microscope made out of a hacked webcam and LEGO brick supports during a DIY Biology workshop with dusjagr of hackteria.org. I was able to acheive a magnifaction of 200X using the webcam. This magnification was achieved by physically flipping and adjusting the focal length of the lens of the webcam. The visuals were analysed and displayed on a computer screen through PureData and Gem software. Through it, we were able to look at microscopic animals such as water bears or tardigrades from the various water and moss samples we had collected in and around our college.

Shelf life is a children’s game designed by a team of five in our first year of college. The main character is a carrot (1) that stumbles across a tub of ice cream (2) carelessly placed in the lower compartment of the refrigerator. The aim of the game is to figure out how to get the ice cream back into the freezer before the it melts.

I coded the entire game in Adventure Game Studio (C++ script) and designed the sets (3) in Photoshop. I also contributed to the scripting of the game, character development (4), animation, sound, music, and voice overs of various characters.

I am currently part of a user research project intitiated by Intel*.

The goal of the project is to develop and qualitatively validate concepts related to entertainment, based on ethnographic and needs finding knowledge about rural India, and knowledge of the feasibilty and potential applications of WiMax technology.

The project started off with extensive secondary research on 4G technologies, current trends in entertainment, and the social, politicial, and physical structure of villages in rural India. Based on the research, we came up with several concepts that have been through many iterations. The concepts are now being validated with qualitative field research through interviews with engaging activities and techniques such as oral history. The developed concepts and the user research documentation will be presented to Intel at the end of the project.

- The side table is made out of an MDF board.

- It folds completely flat.

- It requires minimal wastage of material as there aren’t many small bits that need to be discarded.

- It has a slightly off-beat, carboard furniture like aesthetic.

- It was inspired by origami folds.

- All joints are hinged.

This book cover was designed for a book on Euthanasia written by Dr. Marie Mascarenhas M.D. of CREST Care and Counselling Centre, Bangalore, India. At first, the author wanted the book to attract a large audience including young professionals, and so asked for a youthful and startling red and black cover page that would portray intense emotion.

As she continued writing we both realized that the message could be a lot more powerful if handled with subtlety.

The three smaller pictures (1-3) were iterations that led up to the approved book cover (4), using elements that came up in initial ideation with a more formal and subtle approach.
