Greetings from Mayor & Council On behalf of the Council and staff of the Township of Selwyn, it is my pleasure to provide you with the 2021 Selwyn Services Guide.

As we are all aware, 2020/2021 was faced with many challenges as a result of COVID-19. Many community event, sports clubs and municipal services have had to adapt in order to ensure compliance with COVID-19 regulations. Our community rose to the challenge and revised events in order to ensure public safety while still maintaining our community spirit.

This year’s Guide will only be made available online so that it can be updated as rules, events and services change to reflect the current COVID-19 rules and regulations.

Selwyn Township is surrounded by a beautiful landscape of lakes, trails and beaches. We encourage all community members to enjoy all that Selwyn has to offer while staying safe! We hope this guide can inspire you and your families to get involved in the community and stay active!

In closing, Council and staff would like to express our sincere appreciation for all front line workers, including our very own Selwyn Fire Department, who have worked tirelessly for the benefit of our community. Stay safe, stay well, and be kind!

You can now receive your Property Tax Notices online through Virtual Town Hall (VTH) – visit selwyntownship.ca/VTH for information.

2021 Property Tax Installments:

Property Tax Interim Notices are sent at the end of January and the Final Notices are sent at the end of June. Landfill passes are included in the Interim Tax Notice.

Due Dates: March 1, 2021; May 3, 2021; August 9, 2021 and October 4, 2021.

Building & Planning Department Who needs a building permit?

Permits are required for any significant change to a home or property including: • home additions, pools, open decks and porches; new or replacement of solid fuel heating systems, event tents greater than 642 sq ft. etc.

• Permits are also required to demolish a building or structure.

What projects DO NOT require a building permit?

• An accessory building with a total floor area of 10 square meters (108 sq. ft.) or less (must comply with zoning) • Fences – requirements within the Fence By-law must be met • Replacement of windows or doors provided the size does not change

Why should I get a permit?

Permits provide you with the assurance that the municipality has reviewed your plans, and that your project complies with the Ontario Building Code, local Zoning By-laws and other applicable laws and regulations.

How do I apply for a building permit?

We recommend that you review our Permit Information Package before visiting our office or applying for a permit online through Cloudpermit. The Permit Information Package provides more details on the process and requirements. Call 705-292-9507 ext. 214 prior to your visit to schedule an appointment.

Cloudpermit

The Building and Planning Department has introduced a new and more efficient process to apply for building permits. Cloudpermit allows you to apply & pay for permits, submit drawings, book inspections and track permits online.

Residents or builders wishing to apply for a building permit can do so by visiting the Building & Planning Department webpage or visit cloudpermit.ca.

Selwyn Township’s Clear Bag Program will have a positive impact on keeping recycling out of the landfill and protecting our environment.

September 1st, 2021: Clear Bag Program Becomes Mandatory Garbage in opaque bags will be refused.

FAQs

(Frequently Asked Questions)

What do I do with my left-over opaque garbage bags?

Any leftover opaque bags can be used for future clothing donations or donated to friends/family not in a jurisdiction requiring the use of clear bags.

What if there are items in my garbage I do not want other people to see?

One (1) small “opaque privacy bag” can be placed inside each clear bag for personal items, such as sanitary products, diapers, incontinence products, pet waste, or other personal items. These opaque bags are similar in size to a grocery bag.

What happens if I do not use a clear garbage bag after September 1, 2021?

Starting September 1, 2021 clear garbage bags will be mandatory. If an opaque bag is used it will not be picked up at the curb. Remember you can still have your small opaque bag for privacy inside the clear bag.

Can I put food scraps in my garbage?

While food waste is permitted in the garbage, we encourage residents to sustainably divert food waste using composters and digesters. These can be purchased at the Selwyn Township Municipal Office, located at 1310 Centre Line.

What if I have a special medical circumstance and need a larger privacy bag?

We can accommodate special medical circumstances.

Landfill

Blue Box #1 - Papers & Plastic Bags Paper: • Mail, fine paper, envelopes (including window) • Newspapers, flyers, magazines, catalogues (remove over-wrap) • Paper bags • Shredded paper (in a clear plastic bag, tied shut)

Boxes: • Boxes - please flatten all boxes • Rolls (toilet paper, paper towel, wrapping paper) • Bundled cardboard must not exceed 30” x 30” x 8” and can sit beside the Blue Box if necessary.

Residents must present their Landfill Site Pass to the attendant. Passes are provided to residents in their first tax billing package. Replacement Landfill Site Passes may be obtained from the Township office for $10.00.

In the summer, the centre is mainly used for summer day camps, but it is also used for trade shows and special events. The Ennismore Auditorium, with a capacity of 200, can be rented with a bar option available.

Home to the Lakefield Chiefs Jr. C hockey team, the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre features one sheet of ice in the winter. In the summer, the centre is mainly used for summer day camps, but it is also used for trade shows and special events. The Niels Pind Room, with a capacity of 120, can be rented with a bar option available.

Located in Lakefield, the Marshland Centre features a panoramic view of the Lakefield Beach. With a capacity of 75, this quaint community space is perfect for small to medium-sized gatherings with ample parking.

Bridgenorth Community Hall

Located adjacent to the Bridgenorth Library, this spacious community hall has a capacity of 125. Enjoy a stunning view of Bridgenorth and Chemong Lake from the outdoor patio space, equipped with bistro-style tables and chairs.

Located adjacent to the Lakefield Library, this community space is housed within historic Memorial Hall.

With a capacity of 30, this space is quaint and perfect for small gatherings.

Lakefield Marina

1 Water Street, Lakefield

Amenities: • Transient & Seasonal Dockage • Showers & Washrooms • 30 & 50 amp Hydro Service • Pump-outs The Lakefield Marina is situated along the historic Trent-Severn Waterway between Locks 26 and 27.

The Marina opens Victoria Day weekend and closes on Thanksgiving weekend.

Bike Share Program: Rent a bike at the Lakefield Marina for a half or full day. Renters must be 16 years of age or older. Rental includes a helmet and a bicycle lock.

The perfect venue for celebrations and events. Upstairs room has a capacity of 80 with a kitchen. Downstairs lounge and ice surface with a capacity of 100-350 with bar. A varierty of curling leagues for all ages and abilities are available.

Lakefield Curling Club

The club has a fully-accessible room for up to 100 occupants, together in a single lounge, with a well-equipped kitchen and a licenced, tended bar. The Club offers a catering service, and provides qualified bartenders and servers. Beat the winter blues with endless curling and social activities.

Andrew Trail

Eastwood Road The quaint 450 m trail is beautifully situated in the Smith Ward connecting the communities of the Eastwood Road and Andrew Avenue communities.

The screened and levelled trail creates an easy and comfortable terrain for any participant. Formalized in 2018, the trail boasts native wildflowers and shrubs.

B.E.L. Rotary Bridgenorth

Brumwell Street, Bridgenorth & 5th Line Smith The accessible trail is approximately 2.3 km long and runs from Brumwell Street to 5th Line. The trail is lined with native trees and boasts a peaceful and tranquil setting amidst the Miller Creek Wetland.

There are benches located along the trail that provide a comfortable resting spot. The trail heads feature parking and a large trail map identifying local points of interest.

Ennismore Fitness Trail

553 Ennis Road, Ennismore Located at the Robert E. Young Recreation Complex, the outdoor fitness trail features 1,150 metres of trail and 5 fitness stations, making it suitable for many ages and abilities.

Access to the outdoor fitness trail is available at no charge and promotes healthy active living.

Located next to the fitness trail, is a play structure and a shade shelter, making the complex a fabulous community hub with something for all ages to enjoy!

Ennismore Heritage Trail

1053 Ennis Road, Ennismore The naturalized trail is located in the Ennismore Waterfront Park, which is made up of 3 loops that total approximately 1.5 km. Interpretive signage guides you through a variety of natural settings and points of interest.

Features include two boardwalks, an osprey viewing platform, and an interior picnic area with pavilion.

Fairbairn Trail

This 1.2 km picturesque trail provides a serene setting among the native trees and charming birds.

The trail has entrances off of Lindsay Road and the Fifth Line and includes parking at both trail head locations. 2019 saw the completion of Phase 1 of the multi-phase project. Once all 3 phases are complete, the trail will ultimately connect Bridgenorth to Peterborough.

Lakefield Trail

www.lakefieldtrail.ca Located throughout the Village of Lakefield The scenic trail network encompasses both the natural setting and heritage of the Village. You may enter or leave the trail system from several access points. Covering over 8.5 km, the accessible trail is ideal for walking, jogging or cycling. There are benches and shade shelters located along the trail that provide comfortable resting spots.

The Lakefield Trail Committee offers a variety of programs to contribute to the trail, including the

Miller Creek Wildlife Area Trail

1150 7th Line, Bridgenorth Hike or walk the 1.5 km of trail through meadows and tall grasses to an observation point overlooking the Miller Creek Wildlife Area. This location is excellent for bird and amphibian watching. Various side trails will take you on a continued one kilometre loop through wooded areas within the Provincial Wetland.

Selwyn Conservation Area Trail 2251 Birch Island Road, Lakefield Located on the north-east shore of Chemong Lake, this 71 acre property offers a natural relaxing outdoor recreation experience. The trails pass through a variety of habitats such as woodlands, wetlands and open fields. This gives visitors a chance to discover a variety of plants and wildlife in their natural environments.
