BRIEF; HOTEL DESIGN

Project: Afro-chic Hotel design

January -May 2023

My name is Selpha Carey, based in the UK pursuing my postgraduate studies in Textile & Surface Design .My work is influenced by my memories from home ;East Africa . I am also a fine artist as a Mixed -media painter,Digital Artist and economist. When am not creating my art or designing ; I love travelling back home to explore the rich culture, the land and create awareness of true events.This forms the inspiration of my creative work.

This's portfolio project explores the intersection of digital nomadism and hotel design, with a focus on themes such as Pan-Africanism, culture, heritage, East African memories, and luxury interiors.

The project draws inspiration from my personal experiences as a digital nomad and research on the accommodation preferences of this group: hotels.

I have developed an Afro-chic style and expertise in various textile techniques, including weaving, embroidery, jacquard, open-screen printing, tufting, and hand stitching.

Moving forward for my MA stage, I aim to research finishing techniques for textile products, commercial processes for bespoke pieces , and creating a showroom-worthy design look. The project showcases my collections from three categories of nomad hotels: Hydra, Safari, and Urban Collections.

Hydra Collection

RED & BLACK MANGROOVE TREES

The Hydra collection is one tailor-made for a romantic suite, a cocktail bar and a bathhouse . The three sub-collections reflects on my memories of the coast of Watamu'Kenya's little Italy 'and re-imagining the romantic tales of the swahili coasts of Lamu(kenya) and Zanzibar (Tanzania). This collection aspires to meet hotel upholstery needs, decor styling , window /door sheers, bedding , semi outside bathhouse tiles, bar stools , hotel branding and hotel gift shop ideas.

It was drum beats at dusk , the swahili doors , the palm trees and listening to the ocean waves trapped in the cowries shells.

The Safari Collection is evidence of the safari experience and memories I have had in the recent past of different textures, colour and what beauty really means to me .Motifs are developed from the nomadic patterns in the african space . The collection echoes beauty in different textile processes I have experimented which reveals cultural significance of the East African Savanna ; land, animals and people.

The animals both wild and domestic unite and live in harmony to bring back the green floors home.

Urban Collection

Renaissance1 and 2

The Urban Collection is a recollection of a recent memory of a blackcolour themed hotel during the Christmas holidays that was equally a scandinavian inspired hotel that had a rare twist of african traditional decor. The walls of this hotel were dark and moody and I was drawn into the bespoke finishings of the walls and re-occuring beautiful effect of the underlighting.

Urban collection is a wall treatment collection that grows from this memory.
