A Hartford Group International Interview: British Retiree Almost Lost € 200,000 in Cyprus Confiscation A Hartford Group International exclusive interview… George was a successful sales representative from London, England. When he retired and got divorced, he sought refuge and solace in the wonderful island of Cyprus, just like so many other British retirees. George parked his more than € 200,000 in a Cyprus bank and just enjoyed retired life… for a while… you get bored and start thinking of things to do with your life. As luck would have it, George met and fell in love again. This time with a new Filipino girl friend. Their new romance led them to seek and try a new life in the Philippines. George saw the opportunity to impart some Cypriot technology, that of 9 out of 10 Cypriot houses had solar panels on them. George was being badgered by his girl friend to transfer funds to Philippine banks for reasons of securing business permits, for retirement visas, etc. Finally George gave in to his girl friend’s persistence. His girl friend said she felt an urge, a pull from the heavens that George’s money was safer in the Philippines. George moved some 140,000 Euro and converted them to US Dollars. Then bam the unthinkable news came. They actually did it. The Cypriot banks were folding and to bail them out, the masters of the Euro money system demanded their pound of flesh. If George still had his 200,000 Euro in Cyprus, it would all be gone now. George sees himself as lucky, a lucky romance that saved his retirement funds just in time. So he had some 60,000 Euro still stuck in Cyprus and a possibility of withdrawing 300 Euro a day. It could have been worse, it could have been his entire 200,000 Euro fortune. George is now exploring business opportunities in the Philippines selling solar panels.
