TAWA COLLEGE
Issue 2
March 2014
Dear Parents and Caregivers I have been delighted with the excellent start to the year most students have made. In class they seem focussed and many have set challenging but realistic targets with regards to the National Certificate of Educational Achievement. Many students have involved themselves in cultural activities such as Stage Challenge, Dawn Chorus, Poly Club and Debating. Other groups meet regularly such as the Astronomy Club and a wide range of sports teams. In sport, our Boys and Girls Cricket 1st XI teams are both playing in the Premier 1 grade and are acquitting themselves well. In one week our Boys Cricket 1st XI beat Wellington College and our Girls Cricket 1st XI beat Wellington Girls College which is a huge achievement for both teams. An encouraging number of students are participating in a wide variety of summer sports ranging from Bowls to Waka Ama. There is a pleasing level of interest in winter sports as is evidenced by the number of registrations received. I want to acknowledge the outstanding effort that our Sports Director, Maxine Gordon puts into sporting activities at Tawa College. She works tirelessly at this time of the year and the high level of participation is testimony to her input. Recently we had the Havelock North High School Summer Sports Exchange and that went particularly well. For the record Tawa College beat Havelock North High School 3-2 and all games were played with a good spirit and were exciting matches.
the girls are achieving some good results to match our boys. Since our last newsletter, Scholarship results have been released. Tawa College students obtained 9 individual student scholarships in a wide range of subjects including Photography, English, Physics, Geography, History, Media Studies, Music and Statistics. At the end of Term 1 we will be holding our Academic Prizegiving to celebrate the success of these students as well as those students who excelled in NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3. Thank you to all parents who attended our NCEA Information Evening as well as those who came along to the Year 9 Parent Information Evening. I want to acknowledge the support that we receive from both our Board of Trustees and the Parent Teacher Association. Property renovations on A Block have now been completed and it is great to have the new dance studio in operation. Our facilities are superb and much of the credit must go to our Property Manager, Mr Vince Comis and our Executive Officer, Mrs Freda Kelly. Thank you again for your interest and feedback, it is hugely appreciated. Staffing We have welcomed Kate Barker recently to our staff to teach in the English Department. Kate is from England but trained as a teacher in Australia. Murray Lucas Principal
I want to congratulate our athletes for their excellent performances at the Western Zone Intercollegiate Athletics meet held recently. Also our Waka Ama teams performed at a high level at the regional competition and it is good to see that
