SELIN ONER PORTFOLIO [2019-2022]

Fifth year Architecture student interested in cutting edge design concepts for public buildings including museums, art galleries, clinics, fitness centers and concert halls. Motivated in learning about sustainability and complex design for special acoustics, lighting and energy resources. Worked on design projects with mixed-use programs and concentrated on their communication with its surroundings, climate, and socio-cultural aspects with the respect of building code. In the future, my goal is to combine my skills in music and art (photography and digital media) with architecture to create multi-disciplinary projects.

CULTURAL&VIRTUAL RESEARCH CENTER San Francisco, California 35,000 sq/ft Studio Umut Toker Spring 2020 The new culture research center focuses on set&game design developments on virtual reality. Calfirnia has one of the biggest tech&entertaintment industries in the World. The program gives freedom for researchers to have both individual and communal working spaces as well as introducing their work to San Francisco community. While the east side of the building has the office space, the west side is available to the public with its cafeteria, gym, museum, concert hall, and workshop. The double skin design provides regulation for the wind of the bay and accoustics. The green roof is accessible to both researchers and public to enjoy the golden gat bridge, or to have a lunch picnic in the city.

The concert hall provides cultural get-togethers for the San Francisco Public. You can explore the VR research hubs while enjoying watching a free concert open to the public. The building has a bridge that connects the private offices to the public program. While bridge contains a scenic view to the bay, it also provides more resarch hubs for the researchers. The building’s location and its form welcomes you to learn more about virtual reality and what it brings to the art industry in San Francisco.

San Francisco Housing San Francisco, California 150,000 sq/ft Mark Schatz &Sade Broghei Winter&Spring 2021 The mission of the program is to Provide a new residential model that offers educator housing that relies on community participation to enhance the residential experiece and neighborhood. The site will be the center that brings the community together while being accesible to both community gardens in north&south ends. It provides a welcoming pathway and green roofs for gathering, sanctuary, and sharing. I wanted to bring the turkish “Mahalle’ culture while envisioning open communal work spaces for the residents right outside their appartments. Giving the residents the opportunity to meet more neighbors as needed will increase engagement to have sustainable community. dsfhghfh-

Gulhane, Istanbul, Turkey Worked on Summer 2019

Gülhane park is located at the central point of historical city center of İstanbul and it has been witnessing the rich history and significant events of the city. The old center of İstanbul is the focal point from where the city has spread hence it remains as an important regardless of the changing eras. Gülhane park is a spot where the public and private functions exist together as the park hosts several museums such as İstanbul Archeological Museum, Islamic Science and Technology Museum, Çinili Pavillion Museum, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar Library, The Museum of the Ancient Orient and the new music museum. These institutions offer public functions which enrich the use of the park while creating an interconnected cultural relationship.

Austin Energy Headquarters Austin, Texas 275,000 sq/ft Retail/mixed use Worked on Spring 2021

The new Austin Energy Headquarters has been designed to provide the ultimate in flexibility, representing the office of the future. The design incorporates a holistic approach to user wellness throughout the building by maximizing connections to the outdoor environment, daylight, circulation and social interaction. A dramatic “social stair” makes it easier for employees from different departments to interact throughout the workday by emphasizing internal connections between floors and departments.

GOLDEN

Studio Umut Toker Winter 2020

A experiential light fixture group project designed for the digital fabrication class, instructed by Cal Poly. We designed and 3D-printed four lamps with different iterations of shells and structures, using grasshopper and Rhino. The design for these light fixtures is inspired by traditional Turkish Lamps. The inner structure is inspired by the undulating patters and the translucent outer shell is added for a modern touch to the lamps for variation in light emitted. The exposed part of the structure emits direct light outwards to cast very interesting shadows outside as well as on the translucent surface.

Vellum

Studio Emily White Fall 2021

A experiential light fixture designed to emitate traditional Turkish lamps. After designing the fixture on rhino, I cut and weld the metal structure for the lamp. Using a metal thread, I connected the wires inside. Lastly, I laser cut and glued the light fixtures, and connected the pieces by thread to experiment the shadows.

Design Village

Studio Keith Wiley Spring 2018

A collaborated studio project that we designed for the annual Design Village Competition in Cal Poly. We created beds for 16 people out of wood frames that supports the structure of the tent. In the end of two days, we recycled the material for the structure.

THE EVERETT CLINIC STUDIO HIRSIG + COLLABORATED WITH NICOLETTE JOHNSON

Smokey Point, Washington // ZGF Architects Originally known as Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, ZGF Architects was established in 1942 in Portland,Oregon. In 2016 it was named the #1 Architectural firm in the country, according to AIA, due to it’s commitment to sustainable architecture. ZGF Architects designed this medical center for The Everett Clinic (TEC), a physician owned clinic group, located in Washington, who care for a quarter million patients each year. The Everett Clinic at Smokey Point is the group’s first multi-specialty clinic that they built from square one. Through design, ZGF Architects pursued TEC’s goals of minimizing waste and amplifying the patient’s experience through shortened wait times and providing care in anaccessible location. Lean methodologies were used in the creation of this building with a tight 24-month design and construction schedule and a budget of 13.6 million dollars.

CIRCULATION

The Everett Clinic at Smokey Point is mainly programmed with Clinic and Office spaces. Collaboration is encouraged through shared office areas that are centralized among exam rooms. Patient and faculty circulation is clearly divided, with patients traveling around spaces and faculty walking through spaces. The Everett Clinic at Smokey Point’s foundation is slab-on-grade concrete. There are several round steel columns that line the inner perimeter of the structure and frame circulation within the building. Wood beams and steel girders are used to resist gravity and lateral loads and transfer them safely into the ground. The shell provides a low-maintenance, durable finish that was produced on site using local sand and gravel and is accented by Northwest harvested wood. The Everett Clinic’s goal is to cut the time that a patient spends waiting by more than 25%. Patient “pause areas” replace the traditional waiting rooms.
