SELINA ZHENG LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

I am a third-generation designer who gives form to visions.

With both my grandparents and parents being in ar chitecture I begin learning the language of design at a young age with my grandma babysitting me with con struction drawings, and my mother chasing me with paintbrushes. This language of design in many ways become more literal when I moved to a new country.

Still learning the speech and culture, I start to under stand Canada through places and the way people in teract with it. I have since realized that art design is in ternational and connects people’s innate humanity.

I could understand the language but I could not give it form yet. Like any other language, you learn to read before you learn to write. I enrolled in NAIT for tech nical background and moved on to the University of Guelph for theoretical education, I am proud to follow my family’s pathway and give a voice to our expression.

THE CAPSTONE PROJECT

CONNECTING HALVES OF A CITY AND HEARTS TO A PLACE

The North Saskatchewan River runs through the city of Edmonton as a major geological landmark for the locals. The unique opportunity with two parks on both sides of the river isn’t abundant. By reintroducing the accidental beach that was formed from the LRT construction, the park would become the corridor and essence in downtown Edmonton.

S

Strength

Banff Springs Hotels complements the natural scenery as its background. The hotel could also act like a tourist spot with significant historical value.

W Weakness

Wildlife has easy access to the urban context, the boundary between the town of Banff and the forest stopped really abruptly. Buffer zones could be used on the southeast side of the Banff Springs Hotel.

O Opportunities

Could potentially improve the public transit system to be more tourist friendly. A pedestrian bridge could be constructed on the downstream of the Bow Fall for a better scenery view.

T Threats

Great slope change could potentially increase chances for traffic accidents. Even though there is recommended roadside bike routes, during peak traffic hours, the cyclists’ safety is still at risk especially when crossing the bridge and after.

BANFF HERITAGE ATTRACTION

On the side is one of Banff main street which gives excellent views of Cascade Mountain to the north side of the town. Although this main street is well suited and well designed for heavy pedestrian traffic, some improvements that can be implemented such as the addition of medians with adequate vegetation.

STREETSCAPE DESIGN

The Second Chinatown

Walk down the path of a neighborhood resurrection. The 102a Ave is the forgotten Chinatown in Edmonton. With the uniquely constructed Chinese gate at the entrance, the street has several shops and community hubs that are geared towards the Chinese population. The construction of Valley Line LRT in Edmonton gives the location a great opportunity for the city to rebrand the surrounding area off of a cultural center.

The existing street has pedestrians exposed to a high volume of traffic and no plant coverage for almost the entire section. St Thérèse Garden

St Thérèse is known as the Little Flower of Jesus. The design has incorporated flower symbols to reflect her mythic archetype as a pure and innocent devotee of Christ. With her statue as the centerpiece, surrounded by annual flowers at the foot of the base, the design creates an intimate space for people to visit their departed loved ones.

The affordable housing development locates on E Hasting Street in Vancouver. With limited spaces on the ground level, rooftop gardens serve a significant role in occupants’ experience. The concept allows all age groups to enjoy this space, including an outdoor dining area, lounge area, community garden, and a small playground. Taking the opportunity of the spectacular view of the Grouse Mountain to the north, a play feature is a custom designed to encourage children’s interaction and spark their creativity.

(VDZ + A)

The paving pattern mainly used triangles and angular forms to create a sense of motion for teenagers on campus. With slight color changes in the street corner and the crosswalk’s paving pattern, waves are formed to compliment the energy and enthusiasm of a younger generation audience.

STREET PAVING PATTERN STUDY (VDZ+A)

To enhance the character of the area, street paving patterns sets the stage for building and softscape to perform. The custom pattern also creates a visual alert for drivers to slow down at the intersection.

These patterns take inspiration from both the materials and language that are typical of suburban residential areas as well as the classic game of hopscotch. Sharp and clean formality as well as the crisp greytone color palette will give the design a dash of urbanism to meld the residential and campus feels.

The inspiration is a ribbon representing the flow of time, a more flowing and organic shape was substituted for a more angular optical illusion pattern The 3D angular illusion is meant both slow traffic at the intersection, as well as to meld with the busy layering and geometric cursive of the areas historic architectural silhouettes.

The red crosswalk squares represent the historic downtowns city blocks themselves, each block being its own historic monument in its own rite. As we approach the intersection corners, a dispersing gradient of paver colors, represents transition from past to future.

FOR AMUSEMENT PARK WITH SEASONAL INTEREST (UDE DESIGN)

Located in northern China, the site has the great opportunity to serve as an amusement park for all seasons. Providing spaces for holiday markets, tobogganing hills, and rids for all ages. The masterplans are rendered in both seasons to make sure all sites are being considered thoroughly.

In terms of landscape perspective drawings, I switching between different line weights, shading techniques and perspective angles helped me improve my rapid visualization skills that includes various landscape elements. Being able to demonstrate the general site relationship rapidly is what I am focusing on for now.
