Fall 2021 Symposium Lecture: HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST: A CONVERSATION WITH IBRAM X. KENDI MODERATED BY KEVIN WILLMOTT

Rescheduled from March 2020, Ibram X. Kendi will be the Self Graduate Fellowship’s featured Symposium speaker on October 7, 2021, at 3:30p.m. at the Lied Center of Kansas. This is a standalone lecture, no other 2020 Symposium components will be rescheduled. The tradi�onal 2021 Symposium will be held in April.

Dr. Kendi is a New York Times bestselling author, professor of history and interna�onal rela�ons, and the founding Director of the Boston University Center for An�racist Research. He has authored five books which include Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America and How to Be an Antiracist.

The conversa�on with Dr. Kendi will be moderated by Dr. Kevin Willmo�. Dr. Willmo� is a American film director, screenwriter, and professor of film at the University of Kansas. He is known for work focusing on black issues including wri�ng and direc�ng Ninth Street, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America, and Bunker Hill. Most recently Willmo� won a Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award with Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman.

The lecture is held in partnership with several KU departments including: Graduate Studies; Academic Success; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging; and the Office of Mul�cultural Affairs. In addi�on to his lecture, the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging and the Office of Mul�cultural Affairs will be hos�ng other events to provide the campus with ongoing conversa�on around Dr. Kendi’s work.

A SELFLESS LEGACY KU Giving, Spring 2021 Madison and Lila Self’s generous contribu�ons to the University of Kansas were featured in the Spring 2021 issue of KU Giving, KU Endowment’s magazine. Dale Seuferling, KU Endowment President, gave a hear�elt tribute to the pair in discussing his own experience of ge�ng to know them personally. The addi�onal two-page spread features an interview with Max Fairlamb, 2017-2021 Fellow.

From the ar�cle: “The support provided by the Selfs has changed my life and the lives of so many others,” Fairlamb said. “Stories of their charm and commitment to student empowerment are still being shared by students. What the Selfs have built here at KU is extraordinary, and I count myself lucky to be part of such an incredible program.”

UPCOMING SOCIETY PROGRAMS SSF Poster Session On Friday, October 22, the Society of Self Fellows will host a virtual poster session.

This poster session will provide the Society with an opportunity to learn about current work of the members in a virtual se�ng, offering both a professional development for those who share their work and an opportunity to network as a Society. Poster Session a�endees will include the current Self Graduate Fellows, members of the Society of Self Fellows, and a few campus partners. The event will not be open to the public.

Applica�ons are due September 6, 2021, and will be reviewed by the Society of Self Fellows Board of Governors and Self Graduate Programs staff. Authors submi�ng abstracts that are accepted will be no�fied by September 28, 2021. Details of �ming will be included in the acceptance confirma�on.

Explore Environmental Policy The 2021-2022 Public Policy topic for the Self Graduate Fellowship will be Environmental Policy.. It will include a look at human interac�on with the environment, climate change, tradi�onal indigenous knowledge, the work of the Environmental Protec�on Agency, waste management, interna�onal nego�a�ons, and more. Included in this will be a reflec�on on how those items intersect with social jus�ce.

Star�ng this academic year, the Society of Self Fellows will be exploring the same public policy topic as an alumni group.

Quarterly, resources related to environmental policy will be posted to the SSF Slack channel (h�p://bit.ly/SSFSlack). You are encouraged to post your own resources, your thoughts and reflec�ons, and keep watch for some scheduled �mes to engage as a Society in conversa�on about this topic.

SGF Society Mentor Program If you would like to par�cipate in the SGF Society Mentor Program for this coming academic year, please email SGF@ku.edu.

Serving as a Society Mentor is a great way to support the current Fellows as they explore career opportuni�es. Pairings between current Fellow mentees and Society mentors will occur in September, providing a connec�on point for the 2021-2022 academic year.

This past year, with help from SSF Board of Governor’s President Mary Krause, the Fellows were also provided with a Mentee Guidelines handout to help them lead the partnership and maximize the opportunity. This handout outlined mentee expecta�ons including se�ng and managing mee�ngs, poten�al topics to discuss, and instruc�ons for bringing goals to the conversa�on.

If you have previously been paired with a Fellow, that pairing effec�vely expires at the end of each academic year. The communica�on to Fellows is that new pairings are assigned each academic year; however, the former pairing now holds as a known connec�on and las�ng network.

SSF Social Media Spotlights Self Graduate Programs regularly posts spotlights about members of the Society of Self Fellows on our social media as a way to showcase the great work our alumni are doing.

SOCIETY OF SELF FELLOWS Personal Updates Diana Acevedo, Ph.D. (2017-2021) successfully defended her disserta�on and graduated with a Ph.D. in Pathology on May 2021. She accepted a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the Department of Developmental Neurobiology and her research focus will be treatments for neuroblastoma in pediatric pa�ents. She and her family moved to Memphis, TN for the posi�on and are expec�ng a baby girl in October.

Amy Blackmarr, Ph.D. (1996-2000) is in semi-re�rement from professional nature wri�ng. Blackmarr has become an advocate gardener, specifically promo�ng the use of na�ve plants in both public and private spaces. Among her current projects is the design, installa�on, and maintenance of the first na�ve gardens in the South Georgia downtown area near where she lives, and for the past year she has been redesigning the landscape at an apartment complex to replace its original exo�cs with plants and trees of the Coastal Plains region. She is a member and volunteer of the Georgia Na�ve Plant Society and has wri�en for its newsle�er. She is on course to be cer�fied by the local University of Georgia extension as a master gardener this fall.

Alyssa (Rollando) Burke, Ph.D. (2014-2018) moved to Evanston, IL this summer with her husband and dog, Jack. She will con�nue working remotely for Stryker as a Senior Regulatory Affairs Specialist. In her free �me, she is an ac�ve member of Women In Bio's Board of Directors.

Adam Duerfeldt, Ph.D. (2006-2010) moved from the University of Oklahoma to the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Minneapolis as an Associate Professor.

Camille Delavaux, Ph.D. (2017-2021) and husband Dan moved to Zurich Switzerland as she started a post doctoral posi�on at ETH Zurich in the Crowther lab.

Max Fairlamb (2017-2021) just published a paper describing the construc�on of the TIRF microscope he built at KUMC. h�ps://www.mdpi.com/2079-7737/10/7/571 Danny Griffin, Ph.D. (2016-2020) started a posi�on at BioGenerator Labs in St. Louis, MO. BioGenerator serves three func�ons in the St. Louis region including investor, incubator, and accelerator for startups in the life sciences. His func�on deals with the “accelerator” por�on of that mission. His role entails coaching founders (usually academics) through the Fundamentals program, that equips them with the knowledge, resources, and connec�ons to translate science from the lab bench to bedside. He also manages the grants winning program, Grants-2-Business, that helps startups win nondilu�ve SBIR/STTR awards. G2B currently runs at a success rate that exceeds the na�onal average by roughly 3-fold. As a personal update, he got married to Sari on June 4, 2021.

Bri�any Hartwell, Ph.D. (2011-2015) is wrapping up her postdoc at MIT this summer and will be star�ng as a Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota this fall. She is expec�ng second baby girl this fall.

Brian Miller, Ph.D. (1994-1998) is currently working for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture as a Quality Assurance Officer. Part of his responsibili�es include hos�ng EPA Region 5 QA mee�ngs where they discuss soup to nuts challenges being faced by member laboratories and strategies for success.

Addi�onally, he’s working as a pharmaceu�cal good manufacturing prac�ces (GMP) consultant through his company, Miller cGMP LLC. Part of his responsibili�es is to help clients understand and improve chemistry manufacturing and analy�cal prac�ces. He also picked up a fun side gig during COVID lock down. Being away from people was hard on him so he also loads packages onto air worthy cannisters at the local FedEx. It is a lot of fun and he has managed to burn off a bunch of flab in the process. Finally, he started mentoring a current Self Graduate Fellow (hopefully more help then harm!).

Peter Schillig, Ph.D. (2007-2011) is currently working as a Senior Hydrogeologist with RSI EnTech Contractor to the U.S. Dept of Energy Office of Legacy Management in Grand Junc�on, Colorado.

Jus�n Williams, Ph.D. (2016-2020) defended his thesis on May 14 with honors and moved to Maryland to start his job at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, working in the Na�onal Security Space sector as a Senior Professional Staff.

In Memoriam: Dr. Karen Beckman Pace Dr. Karen Beckman Pace, age 69 of Fort Myers, FL passed away peacefully on Monday, March 1, 2021, a�er an 18-year ba�le with cancer. She was born in St. Louis, MO and was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Frances Beckman and sister Linda Beckman. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Richard Larry Pace, and sisters, Ann Kuhn Jones (Ken), Barbara Perrone (Bruce), and Joan Saeger (Ron).

She began her career in 1974 at Southern Illinois University earning a BSN in Nursing followed by a MSN in Nursing, Biology, and Psychology from St. Louis University in 1978. At the University of Kansas, Karen was part of the Self Graduate Fellowship from 1998 to 2002, receiving her Ph.D. in Nursing/Health Policy & Management.

Karen was the Senior Scien�st at the Delmarva Founda�on, Easton, MD; Vice President for Research Regulatory, and Clinical Affairs, Na�onal Associa�on for Home Care and Hospice, Washington, D.C.; and Senior Director of Performance Measures Na�onal Quality Forum, Washington, D.C. In 2016 she re�red as the Senor Scien�st for The Health Services Advisory Group, Phoenix, AZ.

FELLOW DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM This fall the Self Graduate Fellowship is planning to return to in-person programming. A�er a year of all virtual engagement, it is exci�ng for the cohorts to meet in person again. In-person events will kick off with the annual Fall Skill Session star�ng August 9, 2021.

Fall Skill Session Joining the Self Graduate Fellowship for the Fall Skill Session in August 2021 will be Kepner-Tregoe. Their “Problem Solving & Decision Making” session is one that Madison Self had the opportunity to experience and hand selected as part of the Fellow Development Program.

Kepner-Tregoe’s Problem Solving & Decision Making is the founda�on on which the company works with clients worldwide and is the cri�cal ingredient to improving organiza�onal results. These breakthrough concepts were developed a�er years of extensive research by Drs. Charles H. Kepner and Benjamin B. Tregoe. The Problem Solving & Decision Making method is a step-by-step process for successfully solving problems, priori�zing issues, making good decisions, and analyzing poten�al risks and opportuni�es. It equips current and future leaders with the necessary skills that become the founda�on of effec�ve leadership.
