Dear Reader Welcome to our 2016 FREE edition of the Nursery Guide, Edinburgh and the Lothian’s. Last year’s magazine went so quickly we have increased the number of copies and pick up places so that this year’s guide will have more readers than ever before. We hope you find the new layout of ‘How to Choose a Nursery’ questionnaire, on pages 29-32 helpful with space to compare one nursery to another. My favourite article in this year’s edition can be found on pages 24 - 25. We talked to a parent who has gone with the nursery option as their choice of childcare and asked about her fears and thoughts when making this choice. As ‘social media’ is the one stop shop for sharing - please LIKE the NURSERY GUIDE EDINBURGH Facebook page and join the ‘Nursery Talk Edinburgh’s - Public Group page’ which is intended to be a meeting place for parents to ask questions and share experiences with other parents about nurseries in Edinburgh and the Lothian’s.

Cranley Nursery Group’s Recipe for Success CONTINUES AT LANARK ROAD

Cranley Nursery Group recently opened the doors to its fourth Edinburgh location at Lanark Road, complementing established locations at Colinton, Buckstone and Craiglockhart. Previously the Tower House/Juniper Nursery, the new premises are situated at one corner of Gillespie Crossroads with convenient on-street parking. By implementing Cranley’s proven recipe for excellence, the Lanark Road nursery provides a safe, friendly and stimulating environment for children from 3 months to 5 years – from 7.30am until 6pm – provided by fully-qualified, friendly staff. The nursery has a secure outdoor area giving children the opportunity to experience nature and fresh air play. The purpose-built timber annex for 3 to 5 years olds has picture windows looking onto the trees in the garden.

A major refurbishment has recently been completed, refitting the nursery with new, fit-forpurpose facilities centred around creating the best possible environment for wellbeing, education and safety. Technology is also playing an increasingly important role, with children having access to iPad learning and parents being able to follow their child’s learning experiences online. The nursery also enjoys access to shared facilities, such as the Colinton allotment and orchard, and the group minibus for excursions. Since 1979, Cranley has been building a reputation for excellence, winning several Nursery World UK awards along the way. It will be exciting to see what the future holds as Cranley begins this new chapter in its history. www.cranleynursery.co.uk

A WOODLAND SETTING WITH

Magical Adventures

St Margarets Reborn Many Edinburgh residents will remember the old St. Margarets School that closed in 2010 and recognise the large St. Margarets Nursery building situated on Craigmillar Park. In 2012 the Nursery re-opened its doors under new owners as the Suffolk House Nursery, yet people were still referring to it as St. Margarets Nursery. Having continued to grow and flourish, in 2015 the owners decided to rename the nursery to the familiar ‘St. Margarets Nursery and Pre-School’. The Nursery Director says, “We have continued to provide a warm and nurturing environment for children from birth to school age. We aim to meet the differing needs of parents, providing everything from full day care to just a few sessions per week ”. www.stmargaretsnursery.net

Chapter One Childcare, who own three nurseries in Edinburgh, have opened a 70 place nursery in the beautiful grounds of Dalkeith Country Park. The Country Park Nursery situated in wonderful grounds make daily woodland walks a must, as well as visits to the petting zoo and new adventure playground. Chapter One has also opened Treetops Outdoor Nursery to run alongside the Country Park Nursery and offers split placements for both indoor and outdoor learning.

The purpose built nursery includes; 2 baby rooms, a Tweenie Room and Toddler Room on the ground floor and upstairs a Junior Room, Ante-Pre and PreSchool Rooms, as well as a large outdoor play area and additional activity areas. They are in partnership with the City of Edinburgh council, allowing parents to utilise their entitlement to pre-school funding. The

Waterfront Nursery offers parents the option of either half day or full day sessions with a nutritious hot lunch and snacks provided. The nursery has recently added a new sensory room for babies and follows the PreBirth to Three Framework as well as the Curriculum for Excellence. Launched in Edinburgh in 2012, Step It Up Dance is an awardwinning urban dance company teaching tots to teens and is expanding rapidly throughout Scotland. In 2013, the team began developing a unique programme of Hip Hop classes for nursery children aged 18 months upwards. These cool, accessible Nursery Hip Hop classes have become hugely popular with boys and girls alike and are being added to the curriculum in an increasing number of nurseries across Edinburgh and beyond. Love Music? Love EYM DISCOVER THE COOLEST FAMILY FUN IN EDINBURGH

Edinburgh Loves Kids was created by local Mum and entrepreneur, Laurie Mackie, as she spotted a gap in the market for a family-friendly events-focused online resource. As a parent, Laurie knows that there are so many fabulous events that take place for little ones, and that it can be a time-consuming job researching them. Laurie’s vision was to put together a resource for local parents where they can find a fantastic range of events to choose from, not just one or two. Laurie says, “Along with sharing events, we have also created a place to focus on local family-friendly businesses too, detailing all types of kids classes, childcare providers, and holiday camps along with party packages and entertainers. Our user-friendly platform makes planning a fun day out with your family easy.” Edinburgh Loves Kids has recently seen the launch of its sister Scottish website, Glasgow Loves Kids, with more cities to follow. www.loveskids.com www.nurseryguideedinburgh.co.uk

Skin problems such as eczema, impetigo, fungal infections and ringworm are all common childhood complaints. While often not serious, these can be terribly upsetting and irritating for both child and indeed parent. In fact, sometimes the whole family can suffer as sleep patterns, eating habits and moods can all be adversely affected. A bad case of eczema can have an affect on a child’s character developzent as he becomes self conscious and irritable. Some parents can become obsessed with every blemish, and using too many lotions on your child’s young skin is not recommended. While some problems are just aesthetic, constant skin irritations can have an effect on behavioural development, confidence and general demeanour. If you are concerned you should see a GP. Usually, skin complaints in little ones can easily be treated but blanket treatments, which are all too common, should be avoided. Each case and each child is individual and there is no standard remedy for all. If insufficient time is spent assessing the problem and a course of treatment is not long enough, or is too weak, or indeed too strong, the child will only suffer more and the ailment will return. About one in five children in the UK has eczema. Most common is atopic eczema, which is associated with other conditions, namely asthma and hayfever. There is often a family history of these. But other common ailments include impetigo, ring worm, urticaria, viral rashes, molluscum contagiosum - a common viral infection, easily spread in families and school/nursery environments and which can take up to 18 months to clear. As the source of these conditions all vary so does the treatment. Getting the correct diagnosis from a GP is important. YourGP is a private GP practice based in the Dean Village, Edinburgh. They offer friendly professional GPs, same day appointments, alternative remedies and a holistic approach to your family’s health. www.your-gp.com

IS THE STATEMENT THAT BEST DESCRIBES THE NEED FOR CHILDREN TO HAVE AN EYE EXAMINATION

T

ACCORDING TO CLARE DOWNES OF DOWNES OPTICIANS, LEITH

o ensure your children’s eyes develop to their best potential and conversely ensure your child has the optimum environment to learn and progress, an eye examination by an Optometrist is essential. Unfortunately the school eye examination, when provided, is not comprehensive enough to ensure your child has no visual problems. It is purely a screening test to highlight the most basic of issues and further to this it does not investigate eye health. Children are often unaware that they have a visual problem as they have no method of comparison; they are often unaware that others see differently from themselves. This is never more so the case than when the problem is in one eye, as it is masked by the better eye. If your child has even a slight prescription in one eye, this can affect the development of both eyes resulting in lifelong problems affecting their learning abilities, performance in sports, driving and many other day to day tasks. A thorough eye examination ideally from 3 years old will detect any visual concerns as well as investigate the health of the eyes. Eye examinations should be a fun experience, at Downes Opticians we have children specific tests allowing each part of the eye examination to be made into a sort of game, which ensures each child has an enjoyable experience. The majority of issues can be rectified either by exercises and/or spectacles to ensure optimum development of the eyes and therefore no future problems in teenage and adult life.

Having an eye examination should be like going to the dentist for routine checks after all you can replace your teeth but not your eyes. The Scottish government is so aware of the paramount issue of good eye care, that they provide free eye examinations for all, not only children. If you have any concerns about your children’s eyes no matter how small you should arrange an eye examination as soon as possible. www.downesopticians.com ■

simple steps to looking after your child’s feet As a nation, we are very good at looking after our child’s teeth, yet for some reason, we are putting foot care further and further down the priority list. Podiatrists see so many problem feet walking in their doors nowadays, often as a result of poor footwear choice. Parents complain that time and budget force them to buy off the shelf self-fitting products, however more often than not this is a false economy. There are so many things to consider when fitting a child in a pair of shoes so you should never underestimate the importance of getting your child’s footwear properly fitted by a trained shoe fitter. Here are five keys things to consider when it comes to looking after your child’s feet.

Don’t put fashion and price before fit Nowadays we tend not to consider the importance of the biomechanical structure of the shoes that our children wear. Many parents are drawn to purchasing a fashionable shoe for their child, or an off the rack shoe from a supermarket or chain store, not realising that many of the not so obvious benefits of a good shoe are missing. These shoes are often very flat and therefore don’t offer any shock absorption for little feet. They aren’t likely to offer sufficient support, adequate width, and more importantly, won’t provide the correct positioning of the foot.

Invest in a pair of quality leather shoes Cheaper shoes are more often than not made out of poor quality materials. Very few will be all leather, and the result is that they tend to be very inflexible, not breathable, and nowhere near as durable. Subsequently the shoes tend to last only a short period of time

and a second purchase is needed very quickly – so buying cheaper shoes is normally a false economy. There are many quality brands such as Start-rite, available from proper children’s shoe shops, who offer hard wearing, full leather shoes starting from £36. If time is an issue, find a kid’s shoe shops that offers an appointment service, and book a time that suits you.

Avoid squashed toes On average a child under four will move up to two sizes a year and then one a year thereafter until their feet stop growing. The bones on the tips of your child’s toes don’t start becoming solid bone until they are six years old and only stop when they are 17 or 18! Gordon Watt, consultant paediatric podiatrist at Glasgow Caledonian University says, “Children are born with relatively soft and flexible cartilage, which gradually converts to bone with age. As they are growing, their feet are vulnerable to injury and deformity due to ill-fitting footwear.” He said he had seen many children with knee and back pain caused by wearing the wrongsized shoes. (BBC News 31.5.05). It’s not just squeezing your child’s toes in shoes that are too small that causes problems. Babygros, tights and socks that are too tight and don’t allow little toes to stretch out and legs to kick about can also do some real damage to these soft and developing bones. (Neales Disorders of the Foot pp271).

Visit a shop with a fully trained shoe fitter Toe room is important as mentioned above, but there is so much more to consider when it comes to fitting a child’s shoe. Factors such as width and depth of a foot, height of the in-

step as well as position of the ankle bone and width of the heel all play a crucial role in the selection of the right shoe. A child with a narrow heel, for example, can find it very difficult to get a shoe that fits well and holds their foot in the correct position. A small child with a high instep may find it very difficult to fit their foot in to a shoe. Going up a size is very often not the right solution. An experienced fitter will find the style of shoe that accommodates this shape of foot - their expertise is priceless.

Keep an eye on your child’s foot health If you see pressure sores, hard skin, toe nails that are curling in, swing by your local children’s shoe shop and get them to measure your child’s feet and check that these problems aren’t coming from shoes that no longer fit. Podiatrists recommend that children get their feet measured roughly every 8 weeks. If your child’s feet are excessively sweaty, check their socks and tights to make sure that they aren’t made purely from poor quality synthetic materials. If little toes start to look red, a quick check of their socks can sometimes reveal unfinished seams at the toes and often trimming the seam or wearing the sock inside out solves the problem. We hope you find these tips helpful. If you have any queries then please don’t hesitate to pop in to your nearest Maddie & Mark’s Shoe shop where we will be more than happy to assist you! The perfect property catch AMY WALKER, MARKETING MANAGER FOR ESPC, THE NO.1 FOR PROPERTY IN EAST CENTRAL SCOTLAND, PROVIDES AN INSIGHT INTO MAKING THE MOVE TO A FAMILY HOME.

A

n expanding family is one of the most common reasons for moving house. Having a child changes the priorities that you would perhaps look for in a new home. It can be difficult to know where to start searching for a larger home for your new family and with the average house price in a city like Edinburgh significantly increasing since the turn of the century – you want to make sure you find the ideal home for your circumstances and budget. Across Edinburgh, the average annual price of a three bedroom house near the end of 2015 was £273,976. Back in 2000 a similar property would have cost an average of around £125,000. The average price of a four bedroom house in the Capital now stands at £419,812 compared to a little under £200,000 at the turn of the century. For most parents with young children, school catchment areas are one of the main factors to consider when buying a property. With information on schools’ performance now widely available thanks to the league tables published each year, it is easy to identify the schools that are achieving the highest pass rates and parents are obviously keen to get their children into the best performing state schools. With ESPC’s feature available on espc.com, you can search for property by school catchment in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife. There is a really important distinction between ESPC’s school search and other websites which show school information. The ESPC school search doesn’t just show the schools closest to the property, which in many cases are not the actual catchment school, but lists the four schools which that property is within the catchment boundary for. For families, this is a great new development and one that we are sure will prove to be extremely useful. Of course it goes without saying that price and catchment area are not the only factors to consider when you’re looking for a home and that’s especially true when you have a family to think about. Here are a few points that you may wish to consider if you’re thinking of moving to a family home: l Sense of community – is it a family-friendly area where there are other families with young children close by? l Safety – look out for areas with a low crime rate and perhaps where you would feel happy with your kids playing out the front or riding bikes in the street.

l Playing space – is there a garden or park close by so that the kids have an outdoor space to play? l Local amenities – easy access to shops are of key importance, public transport links, child friendly activities etc. l How many extra bedrooms you would like? – moving house can be expensive and you want to make sure you have enough space for the longer term. In addition to the points above one of the key factors for many young families when looking for a place to live is the school catchment area their new home will lie in. Properties that lie within the catchment area of the better performing schools tend to attract higher demand and as a result house prices in these areas are typically higher than in other areas of the city. In the EH10 postcode district for example, where Boroughmuir High School lies, the average price of a three-bedroom house is £348,775 over 27% higher than the citywide average. Finding areas that tick all of the boxes can be tricky. ESPC prides itself on the local knowledge of its staff. This includes everything from house prices to local amenities so if you have any questions you can give us a call on 0131 624 8000 or pop into our George Street showroom where one of our friendly advisers will be happy to help advise you on your next move. We offer free advice every day of the week and can make sure you find the right home to suit you and your new family. All you need is ESPC. ■

Giving your children a Head Start

a helping hand, your “ Without children’s hopes and dreams may remain just that

W

atching the children in our lives grow up can be a rollercoaster ride. Whether it’s drying their tears, encouraging their studies, or providing financial and emotional support for life’s key milestones, we do what we can to give them every opportunity to do well, be happy and gain the best possible start in life. The financial world our children are growing up in is a very different and difficult one. If saving for our children was once an aspiration, it is increasingly becoming a necessity. The increasing cost of university education continues to grab the headlines. The National Union of Students estimates that those going into higher education this year will graduate with debts in excess of £53,000. And the financial challenges keep coming for the younger generation. According to a recent report by Nationwide, the average cost of a deposit on a house for a first-time buyer is now over £40,000 and, unsurprisingly, the average age for a first-time buyer is now 37. That isn’t an appealing prospect for children or their parents! Without a helping hand, your children’s hopes and dreams may remain just that; but with sensible financial planning you can help make them a reality. The government’s new Junior Individual Savings Account (JISA) is just one option one can use; a tax- efficient savings vehicle aimed to provide parents, grandparents, friends and relatives with the opportunity and encouragement to build a capital sum for the benefit a child. The JISA is available to all UK-resident children under the age of 18, and from April this year, those with existing Child Trust Fund Accounts were able to transfer these to Junior ISAs. The rules and regulations governing JISAs are based on those for a standard ISA. One quirk of the regulations means that for children aged 16 and 17, there is the opportunity to invest in both a JISA and a standard cash ISA in the same tax year. So, potentially, it will be possible to shelter a total of £16,320 in the current tax year – £4,080 in a JISA and £15,240 in a standard cash ISA.

JISAs clearly have a number of valuable tax advantages but they are by no means the only solution for saving on behalf of your children. For larger sums, or to retain a greater level of control, the use of other Investments and also trusts, provide greater flexibility whilst still offering the potential to make significant tax savings. Given that grandparents are often in a position to lead the way in saving for children, the use of Investments and trusts also work well, possibly as part of their own plans to mitigate inheritance tax. How much sleep is

enough sleep?

MOST PARENTS WORRY THAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP, BUT HOW MUCH SLEEP IS ENOUGH SLEEP?

Most children will never admit to being tired In experiments where 8-10 year olds were not allowed to sleep more than 4 hours at night, those children performed worse on cognitive tests, while they still insisted they were not tired. Many of the symptoms due to lack of sleep in children are the same as those in adults Struggling to wake up in the morning Difficulty concentrating

Long lie ins at the weekend Being bad tempered and grumpy and over emotional Feeling the need for a nap late afternoon.

Most children will never admit to being tired

The National Sleep Foundation set out the following guidelines recommended for children over a 24 hour period: Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours School-Age Children (6-13): 9-11 hours Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours Young Adults (18-25): 7-9 hours

Children may be misdiagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) They display many of the ADHD symptoms such as having challenging behaviour, appearing to be hyperactive and with poor concentration, however there is a growing body of research suggesting that some children may have been wrongly diagnosed and may have sleep deprivation (Shur-Fen Gau 2006).

www.nurseryguideedinburgh.co.uk

Sleep restriction is associated with: impaired memory (Hairston et al 2005), poor academic performance (Fallone et al 2005), and obesity (Lumeng et al 2007; Bell and Zimmerman 2010). Sleep deprivation in early childhood may impair cognitive performance A study on Canadian children 2 to 6 years found that children who had poor sleep habits—had higher rates of hyperactivity and impulsivity by the time they were 6 years old. They also performed lower on neurodevelopmental tests. Children who were poor sleepers at the beginning of the study performed worse at age 6, even if their sleep times improved after age 3, suggetsing that there is a “critical period” in early childhood, when the effects of sleep restriction are especially harmful (Touchette et al 2007). Most parents and teachers can identify children with sleep issues but struggle to recognise the

symptoms of sleep deprivation, meaning many children are wrongly labeled as troublesome or lacking in concentration when the real reason for their behaviour maybe a lack of sleep. In a recent study of school-aged children results showed even children who had no sleep difficulties performed better on neurobehavioral tests after they were given an extra hour of sleep (Sadeh et al 2003).Therefore learning good sleep habits from an early age should be encouraged. A typical sleep cycle The typical number of sleep cycles through the night is about six with each cycle lasting about ninety minutes, at the end of each sleep cycle we nearly wake up. Stage one and two ( LIGHT SLEEP NON REM ) Helping a child to fall asleep independently is often the stage parents struggle with, as this is the

stage where children learn to rely on feeding or rocking, hand holding or dummies to fall sleep. Without learning how to fall asleep independently during stage one and two, stage three and four (DEEP SLEEP; NON REM) may not happen, as your child will continue to wake up every 30- 40 minutes and need help to go back to sleep. Stage three and four (DEEP SLEEP; NON REM) is the important part of sleep as this is the time of night where the body restores itself, muscles heal and grow and hormones are released. REM (RAPID EYE MOVEMENT) occurs 25% of the night and this is where the brain becomes active and dreaming occurs, the body relaxes and the muscles are turned off. This sleep cycle lasts 20-30 minutes. The cycles then repeat themselves five or six times through the night ■

W

e looked around four or five nurseries in Edinburgh, before one of our neighbours recommended Heriot Hill. The next day another friend mentioned the same nursery and then we discovered two of our friends had children who went there – so we popped in for a look around, and liked it. It’s a peculiar experience looking around a place you have no connection with, but you know your child will spend a significant amount of time in, at such a significant time in their life. Do the staff have ‘kind eyes’? was something I was fixated on at the time. They did. It was clean, homely and colourful and a lot of the children were giggling. There were books everywhere and just the right amount of toys. Importantly there was lots of children’s artwork on the wall too. Oh, and many of the staff had been there for a very long time (we were told to ask that question!). The decision was made that Finlay would go there two days a week. He was ten months old. The guilt of delivering him on the first day was almost unbearable. I think I phoned the nursery room every time he was there for the first six months, they didn’t mind at all and I got to speak to him if I wanted to (well, listen to him breathing down the line – but it made me happy at the time). At the end of the day we were given a lovely report of what he had been up to. Most of the activities I hadn’t heard of (‘gloop’ and body painting, glad he did it there!) and I was so happy he got so much creative stimulation – and he made some new little friends. His little friendships and nursery social life are fascinating! He likes that he has his own friends (we do actually know the parents now) and they are people he’s chosen because he likes them and not because they are people we hang out with who have kids the same age. They make presents for each other, make up games, fall out, make friends, share books and even share clothes (which can be confusing when doing the washing). I feel a certain relief that even if I’m doing the whole mother thing completely wrong, (we all worry about that, don’t we?) at nursery, I feel they are definitely doing things right! I can tell by his interaction with other children, the staff and the events they do that it’s all going fine. I feel like I’m supported in my parenting, I find it reassuring that other adults know my little boy so well and I love that the nursery teachers enjoy his quirks as much as us. Also, and massively importantly, I trust and like the staff. It’s so comforting to talk to the nursery if we have been having problems with him at home (endless tantrums, not eating, not sleeping and a string of things that will probably sound familiar) because they know him too, and have endless experience so are in a wonderful position to advise. The nursery staff have given me coping mechanisms when the tantrum years were terrible. A certain member of staff has given me huge cuddles and a drink when I’ve been close to tears and brought him in in his PJ’s because I couldn’t get his clothes on (I think I once heard somebody say that dressing a toddler was like getting an octopus in to a string bag). He now dresses himself – it’s dreamy.

Food is also so important. I feel reassured he’ll have had a balanced, nutritious diet in the day, so the fact he’s refusing to eat spinach for tea doesn’t give me sleepless nights. He’s fine, and they’ve told me he’s fine too. I really love the fact that the slightly older children are encouraged to help and nurture the younger ones, and I know my son takes pride in this task too. They learn about things I’d never have thought to teach him at 4 years old. I came back from Yoga the other night and Fin showed me a dozen yoga moves – Yoga? He learnt it at nursery! He also knows all about the rugby thanks to his New Zealand key worker (he’s trying to get me to understand the game, and failing, much to his frustration) and has introduced us to many new things, thanks to the chats he has with his friends and the staff throughout the day. I think it’s brilliant. When we first mentioned the ‘N’ word to my mother she was aghast – “you can’t!” “I don’t agree with nurseries,” “it’s cruel,” “nurseries are like farms!” etc. etc. Since coming with me on many occasions to collect little Fin, and talking to him about nursery she has changed her opinion. A good modern nursery is not a room where parents can deliver their children and go off to their jobs pretending their lives haven’t changed. It’s a stimulating, creative social environment where children can explore new things outside the realms of their own home. Yes, not having to go back to work and staying at home with my baby would have been my preference (please note: I’m not saying that’s the easier option, I’m really not!!), but I didn’t know about Heriot Hill then. Now I want him to be there. I think it’s good for us all as a family. ■ Catherine Parker, mum of Finlay

f you are lucky enough to have fit, able and willing members of your family to care for your child as and when you need them, you will have all your childcare concerns taken care of. For those who are not in such a blessed situation, what other options are available? For parents returning to work, a nanny, childminder or a day nursery are likely to be the options that will best suit your needs. Childminders are professional childcarers who offer a childcare service in their own home. They can look after up to six children under 8, including up to three children under 5 and one under 12 months. They must, by law, be registered with The Care Inspectorate. Childminders also care for older children but do not need to be registered for this. Registered childminders are self-employed and take care of their own tax and National Insurance.

Around 50 hour week or longer if live in. Work year round except holidays.

How to find the best daycare nursery

FOR YOUR CHILD

CUT OUT AND TAKE WITH YOU

Day nurseries care for babies from birth to around four or five years old. They offer morning and afternoon sessions, whole day or week options from Monday to Fridays usually 8am to 6pm. Using the guide (starting on page 48) you should be able to find nurseries in your local area. It is a good idea to phone your local ones and confirm if they have spaces available on the days and times you require. The earlier you can do this the better as popular nurseries do have waiting lists. Then select at least a couple to visit so that you can compare and select one that you and your child are happy with. Also ask local parents if they can recommend a nursery. Other parents will often know a nursery with a good reputation or will tell you if they have heard anything positive or negative about a day nursery you’re interested in.

We have prepared a check list to help prompt you towards the sort of questions and things to consider whilst you are visiting the nursery. You may like to write the questions that you feel are most relevant as headings on a piece of paper so that you can make notes and then compare findings with any other nurseries you visit. What should I be looking for when visiting the nursery? Your own first impressions are the most important. Is it a friendly welcoming atmosphere? What do you see? Are the staff calm and organised? Do the children look happy and occupied? Listen to what the nursery is telling you but use your own judgement; does the nursery meet your expectations? If you came away with a good feeling – trust your instincts.

• Is the nursery registered with the Care Inspectorate? The registration certificate should be displayed together with a current certificate of insurance? • The nursery may have had an inspection by Education Scotland/HMIe or a recent Care Inspectorate report. They are available on the Internet? • Does the nursery belong to a professional organisation, such as the National Day Nurseries Association Scotland, that will keep them informed of current issues and regulations? • Has the nursery gained any awards of excellence? For example from the National Day Nursery Association.

THE STAFF • What is the staff turnover? Look for a nursery with good staff benefits. Those that pay well and offer a good employment package are more likely to keep their best staff. Low staff turnover is one key to ensuring consistent, stable care for your child. • What checks and cross-references are made before taking on new staff? • All managers should be qualified in childcare to SVQ level 4, and as a minimum, at least half of the staff in any one facility should be qualified in childcare to SVQ level 2. Also at least one member of staff should have a First Aid Certificate. • Ask about child ratios. The guidelines require: • 1:3 for 0-2 years • 1:5 for 2-3 years • 1:8 for 3-8 years • Are the staff happy, relaxed, well presented, calm and confident? How did they interact with your child during your visit? • Some nurseries have a full time or a part-time teacher, ask how the pre-school year group are prepared for school. Do they follow the Curriculum for Excellence? • Does the nursery have any specialist members of staff (eg: French, music, sports or art ) or have any ‘specialists’ visiting the nursery?

• Is the equipment of good quality, clean, safe and appropriate? • Can the children help themselves easily to toys that interest them? • Is the interior bright, attractive, clean, well decorated, well ventilated, warm and light? • Is there access to fresh air and physical play? • What are the entry and exit procedures both for parents, children and visitors. Are these procedures secure? • Look at what is on the walls. It’s important that there are plenty of drawings and paintings that the children have done themselves. This shows that their creativity is valued.

THE CHILDREN

• Where are naps taken and what sleeping facilities are provided?

• Look at the children in the nursery. Do they appear do be happy, stimulated and well occupied?

• Are the staff involved in play?

DAILY ROUTINES • Ask about daily routines :- expect activities such as painting, drawing, gluing and sticking, imaginative play with the sand pit, water table or playhouse. Story time and reading, construction blocks and dough, jigsaws and puzzles, moving and dancing to music, singing and simple cooking? • How much outside time is provided during the day and when/where does this take place? • Television and DVDs should play little or no part in what your child does at nursery. If DVDs are part of the curriculum, are they age-appropriate and educational? • For three to five-year-olds, learning should be through play, exploration and having fun. Ask how this happens in the nursery.

Making the Grade

USING INSPECTION REPORTS TO CHOOSE A NURSERY

P

arents looking for a nursery for their child are spoilt for choice in Edinburgh. There are a wide range of nurseries available in most areas, each offering something slightly different: longer hours organic food, additional languages, natural outdoor spaces, and so on. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of information available, particularly online. While for some parents, the decision is easy – the nursery is attached to the school that older siblings attend, the family requires a full day of care, or only one setting is within walking distance. For other parents, the choice can be more difficult. In this case, families often turn to Care Inspectorate Reports as a quick and easy method to compare settings. While this can be effective, it is important that the reports are used as only one of the sources of information about a nursery. At the very least, parents should read the full inspection report, looking in particular at the following: the year of the report, the grades for each quality statement (within the overall grade for the quality theme), the narrative provided by the inspectors, and any comments from staff, parents, or children. It is also important to consider the rationale behind the grades, which should be clear in the report. A grade of 6, “excellent,” is awarded only to settings that not only demonstrate excellent practice but also are sector-leading or innovative; an overall grade of 2, “weak,” will be given if even one of the quality statements is graded as a 2.

While inspectors are looking for best practice, they also are considering the National Care Standards and other regulations; there is an element of ‘box-ticking’ present. Inspectors often have focus areas for the inspection, and so may not emphasise other aspects of practice that the setting does very well. Additionally, an inspection by the Care Inspectorate will be a snapshot of practice on that day (Education Scotland inspections tend to be a week long and are therefore more in-depth). It is important to consider what elements of a setting are most important to your child and your family. In addition to the inspection reports, parents can also gain information through speaking to current and former parents (and other word-of-mouth), and from the nursery’s website. However, the best way to find out whether a nursery would be a good fit for your child is to schedule a visit. A visit allows you to see how the space is set up, speak to the manager and possibly room staff, and perhaps observe children. Going to a visit prepared with some questions will let you find out what you want to know about the care provided, which may not be addressed in an inspection report. In addition, practice in nursery settings changes frequently as they are striving to improve, and staff will be able to give you the most up-to-date information. Staff should be able to answer your questions, leaving you feeling confident. While you may not be able to find the perfect setting, once you have determined your priorities, you will be able to make an informed choice. ■

Scottish Council of INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

Independent Nurseries

WE ASK ALISON HERBERT, DEPUTY DIRECTOR AT THE SCOTTISH COUNCIL OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS, ABOUT NURSERIES AT INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

DO ALL INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS HAVE A NURSERY? Nursery is a gentle welcome to the world of school and over half the independent schools in Scotland have a nursery. A nursery attached to an independent school can offer a superb array of benefits including, music, dance and drama often led by specialist staff. DO THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL NURSERIES OPERATE DURING SCHOOL TIMES ONLY? Although most independent school nurseries operate during term time only, schools recognise the hours worked by parents and offer wide-ranging afterschool and holiday club care to cover these times. FROM WHAT AGE DO THEY TAKE CHILDREN? This varies from nursery to nursery, so check with the school. A few take from 18 months or younger, but the majority of independent school nurseries take boys and girls from 3 years of age. DO THE NURSERIES HAVE QUALIFIED TEACHERS? Yes, in pre-school years there are fully qualified teachers and experienced early years staff to ease your child through the transition from home to nursery and from pre-school to school. DO YOU NEED TO COMMIT TO GOING TO THE SCHOOL IF YOUR CHILD ATTENDS THE NURSERY? No, you are not committed to the school, but you should check your contract to see how much notice is required should you choose to leave. In most schools it is a full terms notice.

WILL YOUR CHILD GET AUTOMATIC ENTRANCE TO THE SCHOOL IF HE/SHE ATTENDS THE NURSERY? This varies from school to school, so check with the school before you enrol. One of the attractions for accepting a pre-school place is that in some schools your child can automatically move on to Primary 1 without further assessment. However, most schools will consult with the family should they believe that your child will not be able to manage the more formal environment of Primary 1. IS NURSERY FUNDING AVAILABLE? Just like private nurseries most independent schools with nurseries have partnership arrangements with the relevant local authority. Many nurseries also accept childcare vouchers to help with the costs, but check with the individual schools’ finance department. CAN WE GET ASSISTANCE WITH THE SCHOOL FEES? All schools provide some level of fee assistance, usually awarded on the basis of financial need. This is done to enable children from lower income households, who otherwise would not have the opportunity of an independent education, to benefit. Schools welcome applications for fee assistance, however, assistance is often limited to senior school and Primary 7 pupils only so check with the school. If you apply for fee assistance, be prepared to apply early and to fill in detailed forms providing evidence of need.

It is never too early to think about your child’s education and an independent school nursery will give your child a great start in life. ■

Thinking about an independent school?

The Compass School - Nursery

The Compass School remains East Lothian’s only independent primary school providing quality education for boys and girls from pre-school to Primary Seven. Children attending the School enjoy its friendly and caring environment in which they can feel secure and happy and in which they are encouraged to succeed, developing confidence, skills and ability. Its small class sizes allow each child to enjoy a very high level of individual attention. The School was recently awarded ‘Excellent’ in every aspect of its provision by the Care Inspectorate, reflecting

the quality and high standards of care and nurturing its children enjoy, particularly in the nursery/pre-school year. Full day care (7.45am to 6pm) will be on offer to all children from September 2016. The Compass enjoys an excellent environment for learning with modern and well-resourced facilities and a very attractive outdoor area for learning and play. Children in the pre-school year enjoy a rich curricular experience, building firm foundations in literacy, numeracy and communication skills. They also have twice-weekly lessons with specialist staff in French, music, swimming and judo. Mr Mark Becher, the Headmaster, believes that, “The first days of a child’s time at school are some of the most special in their lives and at The Compass we aim to ensure that children settle quickly and thrive each day they come to school. We offer a busy and exciting day for each of our children and it is great to see them coming into school so eagerly each morning, ready to learn and play.” For further details or to arrange a visit, please contact the School on 01620 822642 or by email: office@thecompassschool.co.uk

Our environment is an ideal learning sanctuary with the benefits of both city and countryside on our doorstep. Providing educational care, our teachers support each phase of development by recognising when a child has mastered his/her surroundings and is ready for new challenges. Children move through each developmental phase at their own pace as valued members of our closeknit community. Our creative arts specialists inspire a plethora of stimulating creative activities in addition to the generous opportunities provided by the Montessori classroom environments. Our children enjoy daily time outdoors bringing them in close contact with their natural surroundings. Our “Discovery Garden” has grown in collaboration with the children, teachers and parents to provide inspiring spaces for work, play and mindfulness. Out in the paddocks the children

spend time in open-ended exploration and environmental projects. For children from one year old onwards our Infant Community is a home from home, in which they discover and learn in the most calm, supportive surroundings. The Edinburgh Academy Excellence is at the heart of everything that is undertaken at the Edinburgh Academy Nursery. This is not just the opinion of those attached to this purpose built facility, set in beautiful grounds, on Arboretum Road, but was confirmed by the Care Inspectorate who rated the establishment as ‘Excellent’ against all of their strict criteria. Headteacher Gavin Calder, who also runs the next door Junior School, was delighted by the recognition afforded to the Nursery and especially by the references to the central focus that the Nursery places on the individual child. “To read that they felt that the children were secure in the knowledge that their opinions are valued and respected and that they are busy and motivated, was a positive affirmation of everything that I see when I visit the children in Nursery” Built at the turn of the decade, the Edinburgh Academy Nursery provides a bright, stimulating and fun indoor environment for children aged 2 upwards. The outdoor facilities are also exceptional (and still developing) with play areas, sensory gardens, allotments and a woodland based outdoor classroom.

“At the Edinburgh Academy we get to know each individual child extremely well and the outdoors is a great place to make connections. We have a great team and they build on lots of sound practice and theories rather than being bound by any of the prescriptive outdoor learning programmes that some nurseries adhere to,” said Mr Calder. At the Edinburgh Academy the importance of the pre-school years is taken very seriously by all of the highly skilled staff and this includes the French, Science, PE and Music specialists who teach in the Nursery as well as the highly acclaimed management team. Mr Calder was recently overheard telling a parent just how much he enjoys the time that he spends with the children in the Nursery. This can be at any time from 8 am until 6pm for those who choose to make use of the Early Birds or After School Service or outwith term times in the Holiday Club. Edinburgh Steiner School Kindergarten Babies and Toddlers A relationship with our school can start as early as pregnancy and those with young children regularly attend our Baby or Toddler groups. Set within a cosy building and garden, parents and toddlers enjoy meeting together to talk, play, bake, do crafts, explore the grounds and share experiences. The Kindergarten From around age three until after their sixth birthday, children can attend our Kindergarten without parents. At Steiner schools, desk-based learning is introduced later than at most schools in the UK. Instead, the holistic education we offer helps young children to learn vital attributes through hands on experience including listening, communication, social and emotional development, pre-literacy and

pre-numeracy skills and physical agility. Each day can begin with an activity such as painting, cleaning or baking which leads into a longer period of free play to encourage imaginative thinking and foster social competence. Watercolour painting, drawing, modelling and other artistic activities awaken creativity, while the rich imagery of fairy tales, poetry, plays and songs nourish the child’s language skills and feelings. Circle games and outdoor play increase physical strength, coordination and grace while seasonal festivals foster a meaningful connection with nature and a rhythmical passing of the year. The Kindergarten Community Since young children learn by imitation, our Kindergarten teachers lead by example ensuring the capacity to imitate freely is allowed to flourish. This means

our pupils discover the importance of watering the plants, tending the garden or feeding leftovers to the birds simply by observing and joining in. Snack time is enjoyed all together round a large table which helps the group to learn social skills such as appropriate communication, how to negotiate and, where necessary, how to compromise.

Loretto Nursery

Loretto School, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, is one of Scotland’s oldest all-through Independent Schools. This summer, we are delighted to announce that our Nursery has moved into Newfield House in the heart of the Loretto campus. During the summer months, Newfield House was refurbished to an exceptionally high standard and transformed into a state of the art Nursery. The Nursery is light, spacious and well-equipped. The Nursery rooms are furnished with quality natural wooden furniture and carefully chosen resources to support our children’s learning and development. Furthermore, the After School Club is situated upstairs and is, quite literally, in the tree tops. Newfield House nestles between the River Esk, and

the Loretto School playing fields, and beyond the playing fields is the sea. These truly magnificent surroundings offer a plethora of play and active learning opportunities for Loretto’s youngest pupils. All Nursery rooms open out on to a large garden allowing children to develop and learn close to nature, giving lots of active learning opportunities towards Curriculum for Excellence outcomes. It is a place of discovery, investigation, imagination and adventure. Our children love it. In fact, it is the subject of our first Talking and Thinking Floorbook this session. I have the honour of being able to observe, participate in and measure the children’s interests, along with their play and learning, both planned and incidental. When talking with our children, or quite simply surveying the scene, I can report that it is an absolute pleasure to bear witness to them so happily engaged within the stimulating, yet calm, surroundings which Newfield House offers at the very heart of Loretto School. Key to using the listings on pages 48 - 63 1. The nurseries on pages 48 - 63 are private daycare nurseries listed according to area. Nurseries on page 63 are independent school nurseries. 2. The information was collated in November 2015. While every effort is taken to ensure that the information is current and accurate, we cannot guarantee that this is the case. Please check all information directly with the nursery. 3. Almost all the nurseries listed are in partnership with the council which will allow you to receive a grant of around £1,550 per year which you can deduct from the fees shown for three year and four year olds. 4. The last column titled ‘Rating’ is the Care Inspectorate’s rating and the date of the last inspection. In a few cases the Inspectorate has not been to re-inspect the nursery for nearly 4 years. So bear in mind

MIDLOTHIAN

the date beside the inspection grades as a lot could have changed since the inspection, both for better or worse. The inspection looks at up to four areas of performance and grade these accordingly using the six point scale (6 = the best). We have displayed the grades awarded by the inspectorate in the ‘Ratings’ column for the quality of the following areas, in this order: • Care & Support – how well the service meets the needs of each person who uses it • Environment – how clean, well maintained, accessible it is, the atmosphere of the service and how welcoming it is • Staffing – how well the service meets the needs of each person who uses it • Management & Leadership – how the service is managed and how it develops to meet the needs of the people who use it

INTERVIEW

A Day in the Life of a

Nursery Nurse

36 YEAR OLD KAREN MACLEAN IS A SENIOR NURSERY NURSE AT THE EDINBURGH NURSERY WITH LEVEL 3 SVQ IN CHILDCARE AND EDUCATION. HERE SHE TALKS ABOUT WHAT THE JOB IS LIKE.

How did you become a Nursery Nurse?

From a very early age I always had a love and interest for babies and children. I knew that this was the career path I wanted to take. I did my work experience at The Edinburgh Nursery and enjoyed it so much, I then began full time employment with the company.

What is your job title and how long have you had this position? I am a Senior Nursery Nurse and have been in this role since returning from my second maternity leave six years ago. Previous to this I managed both our toddler nursery and pre-school buildings. I have worked with the company for 20 years.

What is a typical day like ?

No two days are the same! I normally start work 7.45am and get the nursery organised for children arriving at 8am. Children are welcomed into nursery and breakfast is offered. After breakfast the nursery kicks into full action. Children are provided with a wide selection of activities ranging from creative play, sensory play and music and movement. We ensure that each child gets out in the fresh air at least once a day whatever the weather! Children enjoy a social lunch together before quiet sleep or rest time to enable them to recharge their batteries. It is at this time that staff are able to prepare activities for the afternoon. We are also busy www.nurseryguideedinburgh.co.uk

planning for learning through play and responding to children’s interests and where they have show enthusiasm for a topic. As a staff team we update the computerised learning journals so parents can get feedback on their child’s learning journey. As the children wake up, the Nursery moves back into full swing with a wide range of activities and learning experiences on offer. Children are given afternoon tea as a group and then a different range of activities are provided in preparation for parents arriving to collect their children. I enjoy the coming together of the children at meal times as it is a great opportunity to connect with them, encouraging them to try new foods from our extensive menu and also to participate in baking and making snacks and foods. We also have wonderful discussions during meal times which can be very informative and imaginative. As it’s important for me to keep up to date with training and development as part of my SSSC Registration I have recently attended training on Setting the Table the NHS new guidelines for nutrition in the early years. I am happy that our chosen career is now regulated appropriately and it makes the career choice professional as well as vocational. My normal day finishes 5.45-6pm. Although the days are long, because I am kept so busy the days actually fly in, in fact some days I could do with an extra hour to finish off the things I didn’t have time to!!

Which part of the day do you most look forward to?

Seeing the children coming into nursery so happily in the morning and again seeing both children and parents so happy to see each other after their busy days at work/nursery.

What is the most rewarding part of the day?

The part I love the most is watching each and every child develop and progress at their own rate and practising their new skills every day. I love every part of my job!!
