A partnership for success In August 2015, when Cranley Nursery Group purchased its fourth nursery location at the former Tower/Juniper Nursery in Edinburgh, they had their work cut out for them. A year later, the nursery has been completely transformed and has already earned a growing reputation for excellence. With three well-established, thriving nurseries at Colinton, Buckstone and Craiglockhart, Cranley Nursery Group was in the perfect position to expand in late 2015. Since 2000, the group had built an enviable reputation for offering fun, safe and stimulating environments for under-5s, with strategies that had brought high-level recognition at national awards such as the National Day Nurseries Association Awards and the Nursery World Nursery Chain of the Year Award. The purchase of Cranley Lanark Road at its prime location on Gillespie crossroads presented the perfect opportunity to offer the same standards of childcare to a new part of Edinburgh. The challenge was to get the nursery back to a suitable standard to re-enter partnership with Edinburgh City Council for pre-school funding. From day one, parents were able to enjoy the immediate benefits of dealing with staff trained in the Cranley ‘house style’. Cranley takes great pride in nurturing the career development of both its new and existing staff, helping to create a culture of support and friendship. This leads to higher levels of staff engagement and retention, meaning that both children and parents benefit from an association with nursery staff who truly care. In fact, Cranley won the Nursery World Team Development Award in 2013 in recognition of its employee training programme. Then came the hard work of physically refurbishing

the premises. The charming red-brick building with its distinctive ‘fairy-tale’ tower was given a thorough makeover, inside and out. The large outdoor play area has been given a new lease of life, and provides superb scope for outdoor learning and play. There is a ‘free-flow’ layout inside, allowing children to build confidence with the choice and freedom to move between rooms throughout the day. And the purpose-built pre-school timber annex with picture windows acts as both a classroom and a way to interact with nature and experience the changing of the seasons. With swings, slide, climbing frame and even an outdoor kitchen, children have ample opportunity for healthy exercise and exploration. And day trips by mini-bus to the group’s allotment and orchard also play a key role in the nursery calendar. All this hard work has paid off. As Karen Murray, Group Director, says, “Although it was a challenge, I feel we have turned the nursery around exceptionally quickly to bring it up to our Cranley standards. This has been reflected through being accepted into partnership with Edinburgh City Council within our first year of opening. We’re proud of having four nurseries working to the same high standards, offering consistently excellent childcare.” Cranley Lanark Road’s partnership status with Edinburgh City Council means that eligible parents of 3 to 5-year-olds will benefit from up to around £2,000 per year of funding. And that’s something the staff, parents and kids at Cranley Lanark Road can all benefit from. The children at Meadows Nursery have just completed their latest series of Forest Schools trips to Blackford Pond and St Marks Community Woodland. The kids have great fun exploring the woods and setting up camp, identifying leaves and trees, and enjoying the fresh air. Groups of children attend Forest Schools for six consecutive weeks with nursery staff who have specialised Forest Schools training. The trips go ahead in all weathers (unless it is particularly windy!) and the children wear waterproof clothing and wellies in the autumn and winter months. Meadows places a high emphasis on outdoor learning and has regular trips to local libraries, museums and parks. This includes an InterGenerational Learning initiative, which involves visits to local care homes. A group of children visit the care homes for several weeks so that the residents and the children can get to know each other. The residents read with the children and sing songs, the children bring their toys to show their elderly friends and everyone enjoys afternoon juice and cakes! The

residents love visiting the nursery from time to time. Meadows also collects donations for local foodbanks and the children visit local shops to buy food items using money donations. The children take the donations to the local church to be collected by the Foodbank and this gives the children an understanding of how charities help people who are less fortunate than themselves. www.meadowsnurseries.com

St Margaret’s Nursery and Preschool

Many Edinburgh residents will remember the old St. Margaret’s School that closed in 2010 and now recognise the large St. Margaret’s Nursery building situated on Craigmillar Park. St Margaret’s Nursery team put children in the heart of the community and create safe, nurturing and an inspiring learning environment where children can learn, develop their skills and expand their creativity through play. The nursery offers a real park life garden experience with one of the largest garden/park/outdoor spaces in Edinburgh. Children also enjoy extra activities and trips to local communities by a nursery mini bus. www.stmargaretsnursery.net

A flying start Little Flyers has successfully taken off and landed in West Calder, offering nursery provision and out of school care for children 3 months to 12 years. Sharon Fairley, owner of Little Flyers, realised when she had her own children how crucial it is to have childcare that you are confident and happy with. “Our ethos is to create a home from home feel, and we aim to provide a flexible approach to the modern day childcare needs. We drop off and collect from many local state nurseries and schools, enabling children the mix and choice of experiences, allowing them to meet the children that they will go to school with, which can help them adjust to a school environment. I am so proud we have grown to 7 settings, providing care in Edinburgh and West Lothian,  and thank the support of my families, and especially my dedicated team of staff, many having been with me for over 10 years, and now have their own families.”

An Exciting Year Ahead After an expansion in 2016, Early Days Nurseries now have 6 locations in the heart of Edinburgh. The award winning nurseries, which feature in both the West End and Stockbridge areas, can accommodate nearly 350 under 5s and are led by a team experienced teachers and highly qualified practitioners. The children take part in a whole host of activities including Forest Schools, swimming lessons, yoga classes, ball skills and music sessions. Each nursery also has a lovely landscaped garden equipped with stimulating outdoor play structures. In addition to this, 2017 will see the complete refurbishment of Early Days original nursery on Palmerston place, with a state of the art sensory room being installed. The brand new interactive room will feature projector screens, an interactive carpet, bubble tubes and a lots of other exciting equipment, giving the children a beautiful sensory environment to learn and develop. And that’s not all, January will also see the launch of the Early Days Nurseries App, giving parents easy access to all things nursery related. The app will include learning and activity updates, calendar access, menu information and an online payment facility making life for parents that little bit easier! www.earlydaysnursery.org.uk

#LEARNINGTOPLAY #PLAYINGTOLEARN Everyone wants the best start for their child and at Heriot Hill Nursery we believe that the first five years play a critical part in a child’s life. We offer our children an environment where they are able to experience opportunities and challenges as well as develop their curiosity and understanding.  Our under three’s rooms offer care and respect for individual children’s routines and needs in line with the Pre-Birth to Three Curriculum. Each day a full spectrum of learning activities are presented which promote open ended opportunities for play. Outside play is an important ethos of the nursery and we are lucky enough to have the space and resources for our children to be involved in a variety of experiences that enable them to be adventurous as well as challenge them physically.  Our pre-school rooms are spacious and offer a rich range of experiences that allow children to develop their independence and confidence. Through work with the Curriculum for Excellence we support each child and encourage their learning and understanding. We always make parents aware that we are not a nursery that prides itself on keeping children clean! We want children to be children and experience as much fun and enjoyment as possible. www.heriothillnursery.com www.facebook.com/HeriotHillNursery www.twitter.com/HeriotHill www.nurseryguideedinburgh.co.uk

Top Tips for a perfect nights sleep LINDA RUSSELL INDEPENDENT SLEEP CONSULTANT. LINDA HAS WORKED WITH FAMILIES FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS AND OFFERS ADVICE ON BED HOPPING, ALL NIGHT WAKING, EARLY MORNING WAKERS, ALL NIGHT FEEDERS AND SILENT REFLUX

When to start sleep training

When you are ready. Never start any form of sleep training until YOU are ready. There is never a perfect age, however I encourage my parents not to start before baby is six weeks old, and ideally have a set bed time routine by the time baby is six months old.

What does sleep training mean

All children need at some stage to learn how to fall asleep on their own, and all sleep training starts with allowing your child time to fall asleep without any aids, for example, feeding, holding, rocking, walking, patting, shushing, dummy, watching TV, lying next to them, hand holding, singing, hair stoking......

How to start

Start with a good day time routine. Aim

for regular naps in the day and try not to let your child sleep too early, too long or too late in the afternoon. Try to make sure your day begins and ends at the same time each day.

Have a set bed time routine

Start the bed time routine before your child is over tired. An overtired child no matter what age they are will take longer to settle or is more likely to wake up an hour or two after they have gone to sleep. Switch off TVs, computers, phones etc an hour before bed time. Have a family rule that once you go through to start a bed time routine there is no coming back into the main living area. Have a bath or a top and tail each night as a indicator that bed time is about to happen. For babies feed in a quiet dim room in the room

they are to sleep in.Try not to have bright lights left on in the room, if your child is anxious a small night light no brighter than a candle is fine. • An early morning waker tends to be having too long too sleep in the morning. • A middle of the night waker may be having a too late and too long afternoon nap. • A child who battles at bed time may be having too much sleep in the day. Healthy Lunch Box Ideas

IF YOU PREPARE LUNCH AT HOME OR PACK A LUNCH BOX FOR NURSERY EVERYDAY, THIS DOES GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS GETTING A “BALANCED DIET.” BUT WHAT IS A BALANCED DIET? HERE ARE THE NINE NUTRIENTS THAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD BE GETTING ON A DAILY BASIS: 1. PROTEIN

4. CALCIUM

7. FIBRE

Protein helps a child’s body build cells, break down food into energy, fight infection, and carry oxygen. Foods that contain high levels of protein include:

Calcium is essential in helping to build a child’s healthy bones and teeth. It’s also important for blood clotting and for nerve, muscle, and heart function. Foods that contain high levels of calcium include:

Fibre helps produce bowel regularity in a child. It can also play a role in reducing the chances of heart disease and cancer later in life. Foods that contain high levels of fibre include:

• Milk • Cheese • Yogurt • Ice cream • Egg yolks • Broccoli • Spinach • Tofu

• Whole-grain cereals • Chickpeas • Lentils • Kidney beans • Seeds • Nuts

2. CARBOHYDRATES

5. IRON

8. VITAMIN A

While the latest diet trend is to “cut the carbs,” carbohydrates are actually the body’s most important source of energy. They help a child’s body to use fat and protein for building and repairing tissue. Carbohydrates come in several different forms (sugars, starches, and fibre), but kids should be eating more of the starches and fibres and less of the sugar. Foods that contain high levels of carbohydrates include:

Iron is necessary for a child to build healthy blood that carries oxygen to cells all over the body. Foods that contain high levels of iron include:

Vitamin A serves a variety of purposes in kids and adults. It helps growth, assists the eyes in adjusting to dim and bright lights, keeps skin healthy, and works to prevent infection. Foods that contain high levels of Vitamin A include:

• Breads • Cereals • Rice • Crackers • Pasta • Potatoes 3. FATS Fats are a great source of energy for kids and are easily stored in a child’s body. They are also important in helping the body to properly use some of the other nutrients it needs. Foods that contain high levels of fats include:

• Red meats • Liver • Poultry • Shellfish • Whole grains • Beans • Nuts • Iron-fortified cereals 6. FOLATE Folate, necessary for soon-to-be mums, is also very important for kids. One of the B vitamins, folate is necessary for healthy growth and development of a child’s cells. Lack of this vitamin can cause anemia. Foods that contain high levels of folate include: • Whole-grain cereals • Lentils • Chickpeas • Asparagus • Spinach • Black or kidney beans • Brussels sprouts

• Whole-milk dairy products • Cooking oils • Meat • Fish • Nuts

www.nurseryguideedinburgh.co.uk

• Carrots • Sweet potatoes • Squash • Apricots • Spinach • Broccoli • Cabbage • Fish oils • Egg yolks 9. VITAMIN C Vitamin C does more than just fighting off the common cold. It also holds the body’s cells together, strengthens the walls of blood vessels, helps the body heal wounds, and is important for building strong bones and teeth. Foods that contain high levels of Vitamin C include: • Citrus fruits (such as oranges) • Strawberries • Tomatoes • Potatoes • Melons • Cabbage • Broccoli • Cauliflower • Spinach • Papayas • Mangos

Filled out your baby book yet? “ARE YOU KIDDING!” I HEAR YOU SAY, “WITH WHAT TIME?”

WRITTEN BY EDINBURGH-BASED PHOTOGRAPHER DIANA BAKER

A

few years ago, when I was pregnant with my daughter, there was no acquisition more important to me than the perfect baby book. I was certain I’d know it when I saw it—something whimsical and wellcrafted but not too commercial. I finally found “the one”—and in the first weeks after my daughter, Sophie, was born, I sacrificed precious sleep to fill those crisp pages, taking pains to write neatly, determined that the baby book would reflect the depths of my love. As I became more and more sleep deprived, my commitment to logging milestones faded, and even managing a mere shower became cause for celebration. That precious baby book languished on a shelf somewhere for a few months (actually years). When I did finally recover it somewhere around her third birthday, absent was any mention of first foods, first tooth or her first giggle that, truthfully, it was so momentous it brought me to a mess of tears. I’d missed it. This mini-meltdown sparked a fire within me. I had to find a way to stop this happening to other mothers. “Mummy guilt” and shame were no longer options. I took that baby book concept as an added twist to my 15 years of photography experience and create inspiring, baby portrait albums within my Baby’s First Year Photography Plan. Mummies who enroll their ever changing, ever growing babies into this photography plan with me are treated to three milestone-recording photography sessions: the first at 6-8 months when baby starts sitting; the second as a first birthday “cake smash” session; and third a family session in baby’s second year. Every detail is captured matching the sweetness of your memories. With the portraits from all three sessions, I set about hand-crafting a fully personalised album. This warms my heart the most because of my personal experience. I also take hand-written notes from parents and grandparent expressing hopes and dreams for baby’s future, and skilfully scan and weave them in between the accompanying portraits of these most precious people in your baby’s life. More than just sweet memories, more than just a baby book, this will become a treasured family heirloom. I have also carried this ethos through to the rest of my crafted art pieces with my wall art and gift options so everyone gets to enjoy the legacy this new little person will take forward with them into the future. ■ Available timeslots fill quickly, so call now to enroll in your Baby’s First Year Photography Plan. 07546 987 017 info@dianabakerphotography.com www.dianabakerphotography.com www.facebook.com/dianabakerphotography www.instagram.com/dianabakerphotography www.pinterest.com/DianaBakerPhoto

5 Reasons why fairy tales are good for children BY SCOTTISH BOOK TRUST

F

airy tales have been around for a very long time – in fact, many of today’s fairy tales have evolved from centuries-old stories. According to researchers, some stories may date back more than 6,000 years ago. Here, Scottish Book Trust shares 5 reasons why all fairy tales, no matter how long ago they were written, are good for children:

1. THEY BOOST A CHILD’S IMAGINATION AND

CULTURAL LITERACY

A child’s imagination is a powerful and unique thing. It’s not only used to make up stories and games, it’s a key factor in their creative thoughts and can define the type of education, career and life they have. With this imagination comes a cultural literacy; fairy tales often include different cultures

If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales. Albert Einstein

and ways of doing things. They teach children about cultural differences in the world outside their own, gifting them a curiosity to learn new things and experience new places.

2. THEY TEACH US RIGHT FROM WRONG

Standing strongly within fairy tales of magic horses and glass slippers is a moral backbone. It’s in a fairy tale’s DNA to have a strong moral lesson, a fight between good and evil, love and loss, and these lessons rub off on our children. Fairy tales teach children that good will always triumph and, while this may not be true in aspects of the real world, the lesson is simple and important. Be the hero, not the villain. Learn to hope for better.

3. THEY DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS Following on from the last point, and as Richard Dawkins has pointed out, fairy tales teach children critical thinking. They see the consequences of characters decisions and learn that what will happen to them depends on the choices they make. Not all characters can be good role models, even ‘the goodies’ can be damsels in distress, or reckless (or feckless) princes. What the stories do teach though, is that when bad things happen, you have decisions to make. If you make the right ones, everything might just turn out OK.

4. THEY CAN HELP CHILDREN DEAL WITH EMOTIONS THEMSELVES

Not only do fairy tales prepare our kids for society and making moral decisions, they teach them how to deal with conflict within themselves. Child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, who specialised in the importance of fairy tales in childhood, believed that fairy tales can aid children in dealing with anxiety they are, as yet, unable to explain. In fairy tales children are often the main character and more often than not will win against the story’s evil. Readers can relate to this and find a fairy tale hero in themselves. Watch any Pixar film for guidance on this one.

5. AND FINALLY, THEY ARE GREAT FUN!

Many children have very fond memories of curling up in bed and disappearing into another world where dragons fly and princes fight. Whether it’s for indirect moral lessons, improving their imaginations or because your child can’t put that book down, reading fairy tales should be encouraged. Read them together, help your kids to invent their own and make sure they know they can win against any wicked witch. ■ Visit www.scottishbooktrust.com for more reading tips and resources.

The perfect property catch

AMY WALKER, MARKETING MANAGER FOR ESPC, THE NO.1 FOR PROPERTY IN EAST CENTRAL SCOTLAND, PROVIDES AN INSIGHT INTO MAKING THE MOVE TO A FAMILY HOME.

S

ometimes it can feel overwhelming to find that perfect home for the family, especially when there are many considerations to take into account, depending on the lifestyle of you and your family and what your priorities may be. Finding a place with space to grow is a good idea, particularly if you plan for new additions to your family. So look for a home that has flexible living space, and remember you can adapt studies and bedrooms to suit your family needs. Open plan kitchen and living areas are also great for families as they really bring members of the household together. Outdoor space is often high on property buyers’ minds, and a garden, no matter the size, is always valuable for children. Also look out for parks and recreational areas that are in the neighbourhood, as these offer activity time for your kids and a place for walking the family dog. Transport is another valuable factor for many people, especially if you don’t like to rely on using the car. The new Borders railway has opened up sections of Midlothian and the Borders, making it easier than ever to commute. The new Queensferry Crossing will also make it even more convenient to travel between Edinburgh and Dunfermline, where you can find many more affordable family homes. Finding a home in the desired school catchment is often a deciding factor for many families, and at ESPC we can help. We offer a search function on espc.com where you can type in your desired school and it pulls up all the properties

available in that catchment area. If you have very young children it might not seem like it’s on the radar at the moment, but it is worth thinking about what high school you would like to send them to. Properties that lie within the catchment area of the better performing schools tend to attract higher demand and as a result house prices in these areas are typically higher than in other areas of the city. In Edinburgh, the most popular school catchment areas are Leith, Corstorphine, Newington, Morningside and Trinity. The EH10 postcode district, where Boroughmuir High School lies, is one of the most sought after in the city with an average selling price of £314,502 over the last six months, compared with a city wide average price of £221,932. The catchment area for James Gillespie’s is also one of the most desirable in the city, with an average selling price of £288,742. Using our school catchment search function could help you find the right property within your catchment area. There is a really important distinction between ESPC’s school search and other websites which show school information. The ESPC school search doesn’t just show the schools closest to the property, which in many cases are not the actual catchment school, but lists the four schools which that property is within the catchment boundary for. For families, this is a great new development and one that we are sure will prove to be extremely useful. Finding areas that tick all of the boxes can be tricky. ESPC prides itself on the local knowledge of its staff.  This includes everything from house prices to local amenities so if you have any questions you can give us a call on 0131 624 8000 or pop into our George Street showroom where one of our friendly staff will be happy to help advise you on your next move.  We offer free advice every day of the week and can make sure you find the right home to suit you and your new family.  All you need is ESPC. ■

SCHOOL NURSERY

© MAIN ILLUSTRATION - STUDIOLAUT - FOTOLIA.COM / ILLUSTRATIONS DESIGNED BY FREEPIK.COM

School nurseries and nursery schools are provided by the council, private and independent schools offering pre-school education and play for 3 - 5 year olds. Mostly the nursery setting is attached to a school and open during usual school term time times. Some independent school nurseries take children from 18 month and offer childcare throughout the school holidays.

HOURS

COST

Mainly 5 x 3 hour 10 minute sessions however some establishments are more flexible and hours can be allocated in 2 x 8 hours or 4 x 4 hours sessions. 25% of Edinburgh council establishments are offering these flexible options. Suits: Parents of 3 - 5yr olds who can take and pick up around these hours or can arrange care around these hours and during school holidays.

Within Edinburgh, all children aged 3 to 5 years and eligible two year olds who meet the Scottish Government’s criteria are entitled to 600 hours free early learning and childcare. If your child is at an independent school nursery that is registered with the local authority then your child will be eligible for a grant of around £1,550 per year.

NANNY

You can have a live-in nanny or a day nanny who will come and care for your child when you need them. They might be expected to do other domestic work as well. It is not a legal requirement for a nanny to be trained, registered or inspected. Agencies supplying nannies must be registered.

HOURS

Around 50 hour a week or longer if live in.They care for your child any day of the week and are flexible with their working hours. Usually work year round except holidays. Suits: Parents with unpredictable work hours or who travel away from home and able to offer in-house accommodation to a nanny. Also single parents with a young child/children who need an extra pair of hands.

In Scotland, a full-time live-out nanny working a 50-hour week earns between £300 and £500 net (after tax) per week. Live-in nannies usually work slightly longer hours (approx 60) and earn between £280 and £500 net per week. Part-time nannies usually earn more per hour than full-time nannies, for example between £9 and £12 net per hour. As the nanny’s employer you are responsible for paying their tax, national insurance and pension.

AU PAIR

An au pair is a single person aged between 17 and 27 who has come to the United Kingdom to study English. An au pair can live in the UK for up to two years as a member of an English-speaking family. An au pair is ideal help around the home, he or she is not a trained childminder or nanny therefore not recommended as a sole carer of a preschool child.

HOURS

COST

An au pair will expect to help in the home for up to five hours a day and get at least two full days off a week. Work year round except holidays. Suits: Parents, single parents with older children or with younger children and a parent at home who needs an extra pair of hands.

As it is a cultural exchange it cannot be seen in purely monetary terms. Families have to invest a bit of time rather than money when they elect to have an au pair. A minimum of £70 per week for a 25-hour week or £90 for a 30-hour week is recommended, but it should reflect the age/maturity and responsibility of the au pair, so more than one night a week babysitting should be rewarded. A contribution for language school fees is encouraged. As the au pair’s employer you are responsible for paying their tax, National Insurance and pension.

WRAP-AROUND AND OUT-OF-SCHOOL CARE

This facility may be offered to three to 15-year-olds before and after nursery or school, but mainly for school-age children via breakfast clubs, after school clubs, holiday play schemes, run by schools, nurseries or leisure organisations.

HOURS

COST

Council school clubs run before school from 8.30am and after school until 5pm, Mon to Thurs and until 3.40pm on a Friday. During school term times. Private and independent services vary from 7.30am – 6pm and offer holiday clubs. Suits: Parents with 4yrs + children who need a few extra hour care around their nursery or school hours and in the school holidays.

The cost of before and after-school clubs vary but can range between £40 to £100 per week. School holiday clubs can cost anything between £50 to £400 a week, depending on the sport or activity and hours involved.

Crèches often run alongside adult activities such as education, shopping centres and leisure classes. These are far and few between in Edinburgh (Ikea, Community Centres and just a few other leisure clubs offer a crèche )

HOURS

COST

Usually one hour or the duration of your activity. Suits: Parents attending a class or shopping with a child at the age that doesn’t mind being looked after by someone they don’t know.

Prices vary, for example a crèche while you swim at a private pool may be £4 per hour. Yet the Scottish Parliament offer childcare up to four hours free.

USING INSPECTION REPORTS AS

Tools to Choose a Nursery

F

amilies can use a range of tools to help them choose a nursery for their child, in addition to considering factors such as opening hours, cost, and outdoor space. Word of mouth remains perhaps the most common tool, with families learning from others in their local area. Many nurseries now have a website or other digital presence on social media, which can be an opportunity for parents to get an idea of the community at the nursery. Open Days, tours, and visits should be available, so that parents can look around the premises and speak to staff. At the beginning of the selection process, inspection reports can be a simple way for parents to gain an understanding of a setting’s strengths and areas for development. Nursery settings are regulated by both the Care Inspectorate, who look at the quality of care (including health and safety) provided by the setting, and Education Scotland (HMIE), who are more focused on how children are experiencing the curriculum. Care Inspectorate usually visit a setting every other year. Education Scotland inspections are less frequent, usually more than five years apart, so may not be as up-to-date, but the inspection process is more robust and takes place over a week rather than a day. The way in which the Care Inspectorate undertakes inspections has recently changed. From July 2016, inspectors will focus more on outcomes for children in nursery settings. Rather than numerous quality statements, new inspections will report on the four main quality themes (care and support, environment, staffing, and management

DR. IRENE POLLOCK EDINBURGH MONTESSORI ARTS SCHOOL AND TUTOR AT UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

and leadership). Inspection reports will also change, with high-performing services receiving a summary report, and others receiving a themed report; both are aimed at being more user-friendly. Education Scotland inspections have also changed, again to offer a range of inspection models, more focused quality indicators, and shorter reports. The two organisations sometimes make a joint inspection. Nurseries are required to adhere to a wide range of policies and guidelines. Some of these are dictated by the Scottish Government at a national level, while others may be council policies (if the setting is in partnership to provide funded places). Nurseries are encouraged to self-evaluate, using the document How Good is Our Early Learning and Childcare, and should be able to speak about their plans for improvement. Nurseries should also be able to provide evidence of how they support all areas of children’s learning. With both types of inspection report, there can be some dangers in taking the report at face value. Particularly for Care Inspectorate, the inspectors are taking a ‘snap shot’ of practice on the day that they visit. Both types can also reflect the opinions of the inspectors, who may have different priorities from the setting or from each other. Finally, some settings can view inspections as a ‘box-ticking’ exercise or an exam that they need to pass, and may focus their practice during the inspection to meet what they perceive as the goals. It is therefore important to use inspection reports as only one tool when choosing a nursery. ■

Scottish Council of INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

Choosing an independent education for your child WE ASK ALISON HERBERT, DEPUTY DIRECTOR AT THE SCOTTISH COUNCIL OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS, ABOUT NURSERIES AT INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS As a parent, it’s natural to want to give your child every opportunity to discover what they’re good at and what they love doing in a safe and supportive environment. Which is why, in Scotland we are very fortunate. We have a wide range of first-rate independent schools and nurseries to choose from. DO ALL INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS HAVE A NURSERY? Over half the independent schools in Scotland have a nursery. A nursery attached to an independent school can offer a superb array of benefits including, music, dance and drama often led by specialist staff. WHEN SHOULD YOU APPLY FOR A NURSERY PLACE? It is never too early to apply for a place; many parents do so as soon as their baby is born. However, don’t rush into a decision, take your time and find the nursery that is right for you and your family. Nursery staff are always delighted to meet parents, to show the facilities on offer and answer any questions that you may have. A few nurseries take children boys and girls from 18 months or younger,

but the majority of independent school nurseries take children from 3 years of age. DO THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL NURSERIES OPERATE DURING SCHOOL TIMES ONLY? Although most independent school nurseries operate during term time only, schools recognise the hours worked by parents and offer wideranging afterschool and holiday club care to cover these times. DO THE NURSERIES HAVE QUALIFIED TEACHERS? Yes, in pre-school years there are fully qualified teachers and experienced early years staff. Nursery is a great way to smooth the transition to ‘big school’ and enables younger siblings to feel part of the same fun environment if older siblings also attend the school. DO YOU NEED TO COMMIT TO GOING TO THE SCHOOL IF YOUR CHILD ATTENDS THE NURSERY? No, you are not committed to the school, but you should check your contract to see how much notice is required should you choose to leave.

In most schools it is a full terms notice. WILL YOUR CHILD GET AUTOMATIC ENTRANCE TO THE SCHOOL IF HE/SHE ATTENDS THE NURSERY? This varies from school to school, so check with the school before you enrol. One of the attractions for accepting a pre-school place is that in some schools your child can automatically move on to Primary 1 without further assessment. However, most schools will consult with the family should they believe that your child will not be able to manage the more formal environment of Primary 1. IS NURSERY FUNDING AVAILABLE? Just like private nurseries most independent schools with nurseries have partnership arrangements with the relevant local authority. Many nurseries also accept childcare vouchers to help with the costs, but check with the individual schools’ finance departments. It is never too early to think about your child’s education and an independent school nursery will give your child a great start in life. ■

YOUR PULL OUT

NURSERY CHECK LIST How to find the best daycare nursery for your child

Day nurseries care for babies from birth to around four or five years old. They offer morning and afternoon sessions, whole day or week options from Monday to Fridays usually 8am to 6pm. Using the guide (starting on page 46) you should be able to find nurseries in your local area. It is a good idea to phone your local ones and confirm if they have spaces available on the days and times you require. The earlier you can do this the better as popular nurseries do have waiting lists. Then select at least a couple to visit so that you can compare and select one that you and your child are happy with. Also ask local parents if they can recommend a nursery. Other parents will often know a nursery with a good reputation or will tell you if they have heard anything positive or negative about a day nursery you’re interested in.

We have prepared a check list to help prompt you towards the sort of questions and things to consider whilst you are visiting the nursery. You may like to write the questions that you feel are most relevant as headings on a piece of paper so that you can make notes and then compare findings with any other nurseries you visit. What should I be looking for when visiting the nursery? Your own first impressions are the most important. Is it a friendly welcoming atmosphere? What do you see? Are the staff calm and organised? Do the children look happy and occupied? Listen to what the nursery is telling you but use your own judgement; does the nursery meet your expectations? If you came away with a good feeling – trust your instincts.

THE STAFF

Nursery A

• What is the staff turnover? Look for a nursery with good staff benefits. Those that pay well and offer a good employment package are more likely to keep their best staff. Low staff turnover is one key to ensuring consistent, stable care for your child. • What checks and cross-references are made before taking on new staff? • All managers should be qualified in childcare to SVQ level 4, and as a minimum, at least half of the staff in any one facility should be qualified in childcare to SVQ level 2. Also at least one member of staff should have a First Aid Certificate. • Ask about child ratios. The guidelines require: • 1:3 for 0-2 years • 1:5 for 2-3 years • 1:8 for 3-8 years • Are the staff happy, relaxed, well presented, calm and confident? How did they interact with your child during your visit? • Some nurseries have a full time or a part-time teacher, ask how the pre-school year group are prepared for school. Do they follow the Curriculum for Excellence? • Does the nursery have any specialist members of staff (eg: French, music, sports or art ) or have any ‘specialists’ visiting the nursery?

Nursery A

Nursery B

Nursery A

Nursery B

• Is the equipment of good quality, clean, safe and appropriate? • Can the children help themselves easily to toys that interest them? • Is the interior bright, attractive, clean, well decorated, well ventilated, warm and light? • Is there access to fresh air and physical play? • What are the entry and exit procedures both for parents, children and visitors. Are these procedures secure? • Look at what is on the walls. It’s important that there are plenty of drawings and paintings that the children have done themselves. This shows that their creativity is valued. • Where are naps taken and what sleeping facilities are provided?

THE CHILDREN • Look at the children in the nursery. Do they appear to be happy, stimulated and well occupied? • Are the children using a variety of equipment? How are the age groups mixed? • Are the staff involved in play?

DAILY ROUTINES • Ask about daily routines :- expect activities such as painting, drawing, gluing and sticking, imaginative play with the sand pit, water table or playhouse. Story time and reading, construction blocks and dough, jigsaws and puzzles, moving and dancing to music, singing and simple cooking? • How much outside time is provided during the day and when/where does this take place? • Television and DVDs should play little or no part in what your child does at nursery. If DVDs are part of the curriculum, are they age-appropriate and educational? • For three to five-year-olds, learning should be through play, exploration and having fun. Ask how this happens in the nursery.

NOTES

• Are outside trips/visits/activities/classes provided? Is there an additional charge for these? How are they supervised?

Are any free settling-in sessions provided? • What are the nursery’s policies on allergies, potty training and discipline? • How does the nursery make sure its staff are fully aware of each child’s individual medical needs? • Are policies in place to deal with emergency procedures, injury and infectious illnesses? • Find out which illnesses will keep your child at home, and for how long? If your child is unwell, you may need to take time off work. You do have the right to take a reasonable amount of time off work if you need to care for your child at short notice. • Does the nursery share your views on sleep, discipline, feeding and other care issues? Good carers will ask detailed questions about your child’s health and care. • Does the nursery have an open door policy which encourages parents to drop in unannounced?

Nursery B

Nursery A

Nursery B

• How are nursery fees collected? • Can you have flexible hours or an hourly rate? Is there a minimum number of sessions your child has to attend? • Are you charged during a holiday period? • Can you have a part-time place? • Is the fee reduced for a full-time place? • Are nappies, meals, milk, activities and outings extra or included? • Is the nursery a “partner provider” which entitles you to subsidised fees for three to five year olds? • Do you need to give notice for your child to leave the nursery? How much? • Does the nursery accept childcare vouchers? • If your child attends on a part-time basis, are you able to purchase “extra sessions” if necessary? • Are there any discounts available for students, families on low incomes, companies and siblings? Remember, if you spend money on childcare while you work and you qualify for the Working Tax Credit, you might be entitled to financial help with childcare costs.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANISATIONS • Is the nursery registered with the Care Inspectorate? The registration certificate should be displayed together with a current certificate of insurance? • The nursery may have had an inspection by Education Scotland/HMIe or a recent Care Inspectorate report. They are available on the Internet? • Does the nursery belong to a professional organisation, such as the National Day Nurseries Association Scotland, that will keep them informed of current issues and regulations? • Has the nursery gained any awards of excellence? For example from the National Day Nursery Association.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS • Did you feel the atmosphere was chaotic or calm and what do you think will best suit your child? • Do opening times fit in with your schedule? Remember, at private nurseries you are paying for the service, and shouldn’t have to drop off at precise opening times if it doesn’t suit your schedule. • Are pick-up times flexible? Is there an after school club for older children? • Is there parking available at busy times? • Find out what the entry procedures are, if there is a waiting list and if so how long?

The Edinburgh Academy Excellence is at the heart of everything that is undertaken at the Edinburgh Academy Nursery. This is not just the opinion of those attached to this purpose built facility, set in beautiful grounds, on Arboretum Road, but was confirmed by the Care Inspectorate who rated the establishment as ‘Excellent’ against all of their strict criteria. Headteacher Gavin Calder, who also runs the next door Junior School, was delighted by the recognition afforded to the Nursery and especially by the references to the central focus that the Nursery places on the individual child. “To read that they felt that the children were secure in the knowledge that their opinions are valued and respected and that they are busy and motivated, was a positive affirmation of everything that I see when I visit the children in Nursery” Built at the turn of the decade, the Edinburgh Academy Nursery provides a bright, stimulating and fun indoor environment for children aged 2 upwards. The outdoor facilities are also exceptional (and still developing) with play areas, sensory gardens, allotments and a woodland based outdoor classroom.

“At the Edinburgh Academy we get to know each individual child extremely well and the outdoors is a great place to make connections. We have a great team and they build on lots of sound practice and theories rather than being bound by any of the prescriptive outdoor learning programmes that some nurseries adhere to,” said Mr Calder. At the Edinburgh Academy the importance of the pre-school years is taken very seriously by all of the highly skilled staff and this includes the French, Science, PE and Music specialists who teach in the Nursery as well as the highly acclaimed management team. Mr Calder was recently overheard telling a parent just how much he enjoys the time that he spends with the children in the Nursery. This can be at any time from 8 am until 6pm for those who choose to make use of the Early Birds or After School Service or outwith term times in the Holiday Club. Edinburgh Steiner School Kindergarten Early Years The rhythm of daily life in Early Years is simple and unhurried without the notions of ‘achievement’, ‘success’, or ‘failure’. Parents and Toddlers (0 to 3 1/2 years) Parents, carers and grandparents are invited to attend with their children to enjoy activities such as play and song, craft and nature walks. Set within its own cosy building and garden, the group has up to nine sessions per week. The Kindergarten (age 3 to 6 years) Water-colour painting, modelling, handcrafts and baking awaken creativity, while the imagery of fairy tales, poetry, plays and songs encourages the child’s language skills and feelings. Circle

games and outdoor play increase physical strength, agility and grace, and seasonal festivals develop a meaningful connection with nature. Since young children learn by imitation, our Kindergarten teachers lead by example. Pupils discover the importance of watering the plants, tending the garden or feeding leftovers to the birds simply by observing and joining in. Each child has a daily job such as sweeping, washing the plates or taking peelings to the compost heap. The tasks repeated daily serve to integrate the individual child into their community. Each group includes a mix of ages from around 3-6 years which means our older pupils help the younger ones, allowing them to gain a real sense of their growing capabilities. Kindergarten education is

comprehensive and stimulating. This encourages our youngest children to be at ease with themselves and to be eager, creative and responsive when they begin their formal education in Class 1.

The three pre-school classes provide an education designed to be a foundation for life and future learning. In the supportive, happy nursery environment, the children develop a range of skills through active, purposeful play. The associated care service, Nursery Plus, provides high quality flexible childcare designed to meet the needs

of parents by providing before and after nursery care and holiday care throughout all nursery holidays, with the exception of the public holidays at Easter, the period over Christmas and New Year (including any staff inservice day), and the five days before the start of the new session in August. All Nursery and Nursery Plus facilities are located in two buildings – both include work and play areas, toilets, cloakrooms, kitchens for the preparation of healthy snacks and garden areas. The spaces for learning, both indoors and out, are well resourced with a variety of games, books and open-ended materials to interest and challenge the school’s youngest pupils. These truly magnificent surroundings offer a plethora of play and active learning opportunities for Loretto’s youngest pupils. Newfield House has been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard and transformed into a state of the art Nursery. The Nursery is light, spacious and well-equipped. The rooms are furnished with quality natural wooden furniture and carefully chosen resources to support our children’s learning and development. Nursery Ratings

The last column lists the Care Inspectorate’s rating and the date of the last inspection. In a few cases the Inspectorate has not been to re-inspect the nursery for a few years, so bear in mind a lot could have changed since the inspection, both for better or worse. NOTE: The Care Inspectorate’s ratings should only form part of your assessment process, please read our ‘Using Inspection Reports as Tools to Choose a Nursery’ feature on page 29 which comments on how to see beyond this grading system. The Inspectorate in Scotland looks at four main areas of performance and grade these accordingly using a six point scale (6 = the best). We have displayed the grades awarded by The Inspectorate, in the ‘Ratings’ column for the following areas of performance, in this particular order: Quality of Serivce in….

Key to Listings SESSION = a morning or afternoon session BYO = Bring Your Own lunch NAPPIES = If a nursery fee includes nappies they usually also include wipes and creams, but we advise parents check directly with the nursery. ACTIVITIES = These are optional activities in addition to the nurseries own programme. Parents who would like their child to participate will usually pay accordingly. RATINGS = The Care Inspectorate’s latest report (see page 46 for details)

Outdoor facilities: We have our own chickens, woodland and outdoor classrooms. 2 acres, huge trampoline, mud kitchen, organic allotment. Specialists & Activities: mainly outdoors based curriculum Rating: Very Good 5,5,5,5 = 19 (Aug 2014) Featured on : Page 66

FULL DAY FEES = Note all children aged three to five years can get a free parttime place at a council nursery, or funding towards a private one. This is known as a funded nursery place. Nearly all the nurseries in this guide are in partnership with the council so you can allow a grant of around £1,550 per year to be deducted from the fee shown. When your child starts their funded nursery place depends on their date of birth. Nursery places for children younger than three are provided at full cost by private nurseries, unless you are eligible for free early learning and childcare for two year olds. See your local council website for full details.

INTERVIEW

completed my BA in Childhood Practice at that time. When that nursery was taken over I decided to try something new. I worked for a year in a small stand alone family based nursery but it wasn’t a good fit for me. I looked around and applied for the job with Bright Horizons. I haven’t looked back. Bright Horizons has the right mix of large company and small business all in one. There is lots of support for staff in regards to HR and career progression but it also allows the nursery to run as an individual entity – you can do what is right for your setting and the children and families you work with.

Have you worked in different size nurseries?

An interview with...

Pauline Cant

NURSERY MANAGER AT CRAMOND NURSERY.

When did you start working for your current employer and what is your current role ?

I started working for Bright Horizons in March 2015 as Nursery Manager of the Cramond Nursery.

How did you become a Nursery Nurse?

I always knew I wanted to work as a Nursery Nurse. I went straight to college when I left school – that was around 30 years ago now and it was the NNEB award I studied for. In those days you went to college two days a week and your placement three days a week. I gained my qualification in 1988 and started working as a nanny for a family in Edinburgh. I stayed with them for five years in Edinburgh and then travelled with them to Saudi Arabia when they relocated. I stayed there for a year to get the children settled and then moved back to Scotland. My next nanny job lasted for 13 years and ended with a stay in Australia and New Zealand. When I returned to Scotland I decided I would like to work in a nursery setting. I joined an agency so that I could find out what kind of nursery I wanted to work in, I settled in a large purpose built nursery based in Dunfermline as a Senior Nursery Nurse. I worked my way up to third in charge, Deputy and within 5 years I was a manager. I

I have. My personal preference are large purpose built nurseries that offer plenty of space, enabling the children to take part in a selection of varied activities throughout the day. Larger nursery are also more likely to offer direct garden access, which allows children to take part in free-flow play – meaning that adults are deployed both inside and outside at all times, enabling the children to move in and out as they choose.

What would you say to parents are the main benefits for a child attending a large or small setting?

I always say that you have to look for a setting that suits your child and your family. Some children thrive in large open areas whilst others need small quiet spaces. Each child has their own personality from an early age – mums and dads know what will suit their child. I’d advise parents to go and look around lots of nurseries, meet the staff that will be working with you, chat to them on your walk around the nursery and ask them questions. You’ll find they have most of the answers you are looking for. You’ll find the setting that is a perfect fit for your family.

What do you think makes the biggest difference to a child’s nursery life - the setting or staff ?

Honestly – staff. The staff make the nursery what it is. They form the bonds, they provide the care and education and tailor everything to the individual child’s needs. Without good staff you can have the nicest setting and things still won’t work. If you have a dedicated, hard working team, a nice setting is the cherry on top.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Through my role I get to engage with our nursery families, have one on one conversations with children and get transported in to their amazing imagination, see children get something for the first time and see babies smile and giggle – what could be better? I’m also fortunate to work as part of an amazing staff team, seeing so many of them progress through the nursery with promotions and extra responsibilities is so rewarding for me. In summary, everything, I love the variety and knowing that each day will put a smile on my face for a different reason.
