Newcastle and the North East’s folk scene is strong and vibrant and Beyond the Moor seeks to harness this by pairing it with genuine world class touring bands.

The seven strong line up will begin from 1pm, and continue to 11pm, accompanied by street food outside, and GCT’s bar serving all day to keep ticket buyers refreshed throughout. Tim Dalling will also be doing a two-hour WORKSHOP of writing exercises and singing games, aimed at freeing yourself up and exploring various ways of generating song ideas. It will be open to all but ticketed separately.

Completing the line-up are two North East based artists: brand new accordion and percussion duo from Newcastle, AMY THATCHER AND FRANCESCA KNOWLES’ live show is one of both raucous energy and sympathetic intensity, incorporating drums, synths, keys and vocals into an unapologetic brew of colourful and creative composition. While TIM DALLING uses his funky piano accordion to accompany songs of poetry, love, animals and drink. Tim was the former kilted fall guy in comedy folk trio The Old Rope String Band and he is still right there at the cutting edge of 21st century Music Hall. He was recently described as a cross between Led Zeppelin and Ivor Cutler.

Fans of instrumental virtuosity should be excited to see RYAN YOUNG on the bill. Part of the ‘new wave’ of Scottish traditional artists, twice a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards, and twice a finalist in the prestigious BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of The Year Ryan’s fiddle playing is brimming with fresh melodic ideas, an uplifting rhythmic drive and a great depth of dynamics and precision. He’s joined on stage by multi-instrumentalist and member of RURA and Väldens Band, DAVID FOLEY.

Beyond the Moor is debuting this year, and will be Newcastle’s latest music festival. The inaugural day-long event takes place at Gosforth Civic Theatre on 24 September 2022, and will showcase the best in local and national artists playing contemporary, alternative and traditional folk and roots music. Headlining the first ever edition of the Festival will be RTE Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 Folk award nominees FLOOK. Taking inspiration from their roots in the Irish and English traditions, Flook have an enviable trademark sound, weaving and spinning traditionally rooted tunes over precise acoustic grooves, with a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination. They are paired at the top of the bill by NANCY KERR AND JAMES FAGAN, one of the best-known and most experienced folk duos on the British circuit today. Outstanding musicianship, a lifelong grounding in traditional singing and instrumental playing, acclaimed original compositions but most noticeably a visceral chemistry between these two make Kerr and Fagan a perennial favourite at festivals, venues and clubs across theThecountry.wonderful lyricism and gorgeous melodies of WITHERED HAND will also adorn the GCT stage. Described by King Creosote in The Independent as “The UK’s Best Lyricist”, Withered Hand is the song writing output of Dan Willson, a cult figure in the Scottish music scene since 2009. North East based trio HOLLY AND THE REIVERS return to GCT from a hugely popular gig in January ’22 to showcase their growing reputation as one of the most exciting folk and trad bands to come out of the North East scene in years. Bertie Armstrong, Merle Harbron and Holly Clarke create a musical setting for their songs by combining the musical styles of old-time banjo, Scottish fiddle and the Ballad singing.

Due to this success, St James Park has been chosen to play host to the first fixture of the World Cup, England v Samoa, on Saturday October 15th. The following day Kingston Park will be home to Scotland's opening fixture, when they match up against an up and coming Italian side. The event returns to Kingston Park the following Saturday, when Italy once again feature, this time against the tough Fijian outfit.

The way the World Cup works is that all quarterfinalists from the preceding World Cup (RLWC2017) have automatically qualified to compete. The remaining eight nations were decided by a qualification process based on global regions determined by International Rugby League.

12 | SELECT MAGAZINE

This year's World Cup will see more teams than ever compete for the trophy, with four groups of four nations competing in stadiums across England.

Amongst the stadiums chosen are St James Park and Kingston Park, with four fixtures coming to the region, including the prestigious opening ceremony and the first game of the tournament. Along with Old Trafford, St James Park is now seen as a flagship stadium for Rugby League, as shown by the success of the Magic Weekend, which has found its home right here in Newcastle.

The Rugby League World Cup was first held in France in 1954, and was the first world cup for any form of Rugby football, more than 30 years before the first Rugby Union World Cup.

Last hosted solely on these shores in 1995, this autumn England will once again play host to the best players in the world. The World Cup was due to be held last autumn however, due to covid restrictions in Australia and New Zealand (the two biggest forces in the sport), it was decided to move the event back 12 months, but still market it as the 2021 World Cup.

The first tournament featured only four teams, with Great Britain winning the event, beating hosts France in the final. The event was very sporadic over the next few years, with tournaments being anywhere from 2 to 8 years apart, and regularly featuring only 4 or 5 teams. This changed in 1995 when, with the help of various investments and a new interest in the sport, England hosted a 10 team tournament, filling Wembley stadium for the final. Even though the final didn't go the way of the hosts, they were beaten 16-8 by old rivals Australia, a new era of Rugby League was born and the sport has gone from strength to strength ever since. This year's event is the sixteenth Rugby League World Cup, and the tournament has only ever been won by three countries. Australia have collected the trophy 11 times, Great Britain 3 times and New Zealand have won it once. Our nations competed as Great Britain until 1995 and, since then, none of the individual nations have quite managed to lift the trophy. With home advantage, one of the strongest squads ever put together, and a new found confidence, let's hope this year England can finally get their hands on the World Cup trophy - and you cheer them on right here in the North East!

The Biscuit Factory is the UK’s largest independent art, craft and design gallery, founded in 2002

If you’re an art lover, The Biscuit Factory, located in the cultural quarter of Newcastle, Ouseburn is well worth a visit. A former Victorian biscuit manufacturing warehouse, The Biscuit Factory underwent a sympathetic refurbishment, ensuring that many of the original and characterful facets of the building such as the beams and brickwork were maintained. Adding an upper floor, accessible by a bespoke staircase, provided a treble height atrium that allows natural daylight to flood through the centre of the gallery and provides what is now our headline artist's exhibition space. A number of artist studios were also developed on the lower 2 floors of the building housing 25 creative work spaces. The ethos of the gallery has always been to provide a platform for local and national artists, to support emergent makers, to showcase established artists and to add to the cultural landscape of the region. The huge scale of the gallery means that they are able to display the work of over 250 artists at any time, with a team of Curators hand selecting work. They exhibit and sell original paintings, handmade prints, glass, ceramics, textiles, photography, furniture, design led homewares and jewellery. Receiving over 50,000 visitors a year their focus is on making art accessible and creating a genuine marketplace for artists and makers. They work with national agencies, arts organisations and initiatives such as Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums and New Light Art Prize.

TICKET TO PARADISE

The American dream of the 1950s blackens into a nightmare in Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller that takes up residence under your skin. Alice is a young, happy wife whose marriage to company man Jack comes with just one caveat: never, ever ask him about his work on the secret Victory Project.

THE INVITATION

Elba plays Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a longplanned trip with their daughters to a game reserve managed by Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley, Russian Doll series, Maleficent), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of blood-thirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them.

A divorced couple that teams up and travels to Bali to stop their daughter from making the same mistake they think they made 25 years ago. Academy Award winners George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite on the big screen as exes who find themselves on a shared mission to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made.

The Forgiven takes place over a weekend in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, and explores the reverberations of a random accident on the lives of both the local Muslims, and Western visitors to a house party in a grand villa. Speeding through the Moroccan desert to attend an old friend’s lavish weekend party, wealthy Londoners David and Jo Henninger (Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain) are involved in a tragic accident with a local teenage boy. Arriving late at the grand villa with the debauched party raging, the couple attempts to cover up the incident with the collusion of the local police. But when the boy’s father arrives seeking justice, the stage is set for a tension-filled culture clash in which David and Jo must come to terms with their fateful act and its shattering consequences. After the death of her mother and having no other known relatives, Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel) takes a DNA test… and discovers a long-lost cousin she never knew she had. Invited by her newfound family to a lavish wedding in the English countryside, she’s at first seduced by the sexy aristocrat host but is soon thrust into a nightmare of survival as she uncovers twisted secrets in her family’s history and the unsettling intentions behind their sinful generosity.

“Audiences are so ready for live performances after the last couple of years, and so are we. “So, if you have a talent that can wow our judges and an audience of 600 please do get in touch.”

Danny, who will be also bringing his Cirque Du Hilarious tour to the North East in summer, said: “It will be fantastic to be back. It’s been years since we have been able to put the variety show on and I’m sure it will be even better than ever.

“We have some of the biggest stars in the North East taking part, all for a good cause, and we are so grateful to them for giving up their time for us. This promises to be a memorable, incredible show.

“It will be great to be in this lovely venue, on the beautiful North East coast, bringing together the best of what the region has to offer in aid of this lifechanging charity.

Individuals or groups with a unique talent need to send a video or video link of their act to frankie@ rusbymedia.com by Friday July 1st, with a shortlist of entries then invited to perform in front of a panel of judges before a winner is chosen.

Smile For Life, based in Gosforth, provides work placements at its Gosforth-based Café Beam, as well as life changing equipment and experiences, to disabled and disadvantaged youngsters in the North East.

Paula Gascoigne, charity CEO, says she is so excited to finally be bringing this show back after having to cancel the 2020 show due to Covid-19.

She said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch Smile For A Night which will be bigger and better than ever.

Smile For A Night will take to the stage at new venue for the event – the Playhouse, Whitley Bay, on Sunday September 25th – in aid of children’s charity Smile For Life. All money raised will go towards improving the lives of young people with disabilities and learning difficulties across the North East.

And the final performance spot has been opened up to the public, with the charity offering a slot to a new star to showcase their skills.

LOCAL NEWS

On the day Danny and Clive – stars of the hit show Danny & Mick and Newcastle Theatre Royal panto – will take the audience on a tour of local acts including singers, dancers and comedians, as well as performing their own slide-splitting comedy capers.

At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons: to increase its insulating performance and enhance its internal aesthetic appearance.Experience will have shown you that in winter, heat is sucked out of your room and into the conservatory as soon as you open the door. During the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. At Thermos Roof, we can transform your conservatory from a room you barely use, into a space you can enjoy all year round as the temperature is comfortable and constant. You will even be able to watch TV or use a computer without sunglasses. What is most impressive is that we can do this all in one day! With noWemess!retain your existing polycarbonate or glass roof and insulate it from the inside, finishing it in an attractive gloss white tongue and groove PVC cladding that matches the rest of your conservatory construction. The materials we use are lightweight; therefore, no roof strengthening is required, no planning application is necessary and no long periods of mess and upheaval in your home. In addition to this, the look and finish of your Thermos Roof will be as fresh in 10 years as it is today. The performance of the lightweight insulation system will equal that of vastly more expensive options, with less mess and waste and less time to install, saving you thousands of pounds and allowing you to enjoy your conservatory immediately.

With most of us facing rising energy bills, why not reduce these costs and save money instantly with a Thermos Roof insulation system in your conservatory. Here they explain more.

Help Reduce Energy Costs with Thermos Roof

Conservatories are a great space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden. They are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually shortlived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

We can install a Thermos Roof to conservatories of any size or shape, transforming them into a flowing extension of your living space wherein the external weather conditions do not dictate its use; it will become warm in winter and cool in summer. In addition to the above benefits, our team will eliminate mould and condensation, reduce rain, noise and serve to cover up an unsightly dirty roof. The gloss white finish will make it brighter in the evenings by reflecting light and will give your conservatory that WOW factor, making it a great place to relax or work. All installations come with a five-year warranty. We guarantee that you will be amazed by both the improved appearance and the insulating performance of your new roof. We offer a free quotation service for the installation of your Thermos Roof and, should you require it, we can also undertake maintenance works to repair or replace gutters, fascias, soffits, window sills, roof panels and leaking roofs.

Working a plot year- round means that allotment holders experience the seasons, witness the behaviour of birds, insects and other animals and gain an understanding of the eco-system. This appreciation of the natural world also has the potential to inspire more environmentally aware.

If managed properly, an allotment can produce enough food to supplement a family’s weekly shop, with fresh fruit and vegetables over the year. Allotment gardeners can choose to garden organically and avoid ingesting chemicals that are likely to be present on shop bought fruit and vegetables.

The physical benefits of regular spells of gardening help plotholders to keep fit even if they have sedentary jobs, the physical exercise also contributes to their mental well-being. Gardening can also help to maintain good gait and balance in older gardeners and help with cognitive decline.

In a survey of National Allotment Society members nearly every person said their love of allotment gardening comes from the fresh air, home grown produce, healthy lifestyle and like-minded people this activity offers. As many new plot-holders discover, growing vegetables requires acquiring new knowledge and skills and the satisfaction gained from eating their first home grown tomato or new potato makes them taste even more delicious!

The Benefits of an Allotment

During World War II, and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed, so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment.

38 | SELECT MAGAZINE

To acquire an allotment, simply approach your council (see the websites listed below). Price and availability vary and in some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments and community gardens much more seriously now, and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. Useful Websites

www.newcastleallotments.co.ukwww.nsalg.org.uk

Allotments don’t just benefit the humans who tend them. Each plot is a complex web of plants, micro-organisms, fungi, insects, and animals supporting pollination and offering a refuge for wildlife. To celebrate all the lovely bugs and beasties on Britain’s allotments, this year’s National Allotments Week (9th-14th August) is encouraging gardeners to take part in a mini-beast monitoring survey. Bugs are really important to the healthy functioning of an allotment. They pollinate fruit and veg, control pests, and improve the soil. They are nature’s vital helpers. To take part in the survey visit www.nsalg.org.uk/news-events-campaigns/national-allotments-week/ Many allotment gardeners will tell you that a spell on the plot nurturing plants and contemplating nature makes them feel calmer and more hopeful

and there have been recent studies that have measured this benefit.

During the 1960’s, allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity. As a society we were more affluent; more likely to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket. But with food prices soaring and less produce available on the supermarket shelves, added to an increased interest in plant-based diets and locally sourced food, allotments are enjoying a popularity surge. And the statistics in the news are scary. The number of food banks is growing exponentially as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, yet the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach of most consumers.

Is it any wonder that so many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food? But growing food requires space, and modern housing often means tiny gardens. This is where allotments come into their own.

I am on a mission at the moment to find those folks who are falling through the cracks in society. Pre covid was bad enough but being isolated and unable to seek help is far worse now. As regular readers will know, I spend a lot of time assisting older clients who simply have no one to support or help them. You may not even know what help is available to you. Such clients will typically have been only children who never married. Or who were divorced years ago and don’t have siblings or children. Some of my clients have long term mental health problems such as schizophrenia, they can function on a day to day basis but cannot manage all of their affairs.

There are many things that we attend to on behalf of those who are struggling to manage their affairs. If we have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place then we can mange your money. In the first instance I would make sure that your home is insured. Many clients let this lapse without realising. I would check standing orders and direct debits to make sure that you are only paying out money when you need to do so. I regularly find that huge sums of money are being paid out to charities as one charity after another contacts the vulnerable to seek help. That is fine so long as you can afford to make such payments. And if you are paying to charities do you know how many you send money to and how much per month?Youmay be struggling to cope with shopping, cleaning, washing and ironing etc. You may feel that you can’t afford help. But if your finances were under control this may free up money so that you could pay someone to assist you. You may be entitled to state benefits such as Attendance Allowance. This can be worth circa £4,000 per year. Again, this money could be used to pay for someone to come in and support you even a couple of times a week. And it doesn’t have to be fifteen minutes here and there. There are many private agencies, who are often cheaper than social services, who can offer you a minimum of an hour per visit. Did you know that there are agencies who will take you out for the day. Do you fancy a trip to the Northumberland Coast or Durham City. Do you want someone to take you to and from your cricket club, or to watch the football? Do you want someone to make meals for you? The choice is yours. We can also help to sort out your home. Has it all become a bit too much. Have you started to hoard things so that your home is feeling too cluttered? We have a team that will come in and work with us and you to turn things around. We can arrange for a one off deep clean, the removal of items you no longer need or want and weekly cleaning. We can also get all of your paperwork under control. This might include finding old savings policies that you have forgotten about. We found one recently for a client that was worth over £40,000! We can organise your bank accounts into one place and bring in a financial advisor to ensure that your money is in the correct place for you.

Normal house insurance is not enough when a house is empty for more than thirty days. We deal with specialist insurers in order to protect our clients’ property.

Over the next few months

I am also particularly concerned about older members of the gay community. Especially those who were in the forces and had to spend their working lives hiding the fact that they were gay. This may mean that they were unable to marry, they may have avoided the gay community who would ordinarily have provided some support. I have been trying to highlight the plight of this group of people to various organisations including SSAFA.Ihave also noticed that in traditional religious families individuals have spent their lives hiding the fact that they are gay so as not to upset their parents or their religious community. Again they may remain unmarried and without children to help them as they get older.

What If You Need to go Into a Care Home? This can be a huge decision and there will be a lot to think about. I have looked after the homes of clients for years who have not wanted to sell. It is your decision as to when or if you sell a home that may have been the place of years of happy family memories. I have dealt with council tax and council tax rebates. Water rates, which should not be paid when a house is empty. Gas and electricity, care home fees and spending money.

To sum up, we can step in and be you. We do all the work so that you don’t have to worry about everything all of the time. If you feel that you are floundering and want a chat about how we can help then you can either email me at je@emmersons-solicitors.co.uk or ring the office on 0191 2846989 and leave your name and telephone number so that I can return your call.

And can I ask, have you noticed a lonely neighbour, have you popped round to see if they are coping? They might have been more in the swing of things before covid but if their day centre closed down or the club they were a member of stopped having meetings then they may have declined quite rapidly in the intervening period.

ONE OF THE GIRLS by Lucy Clarke

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law. He is a judge, in Florida - under Lacy’s jurisdiction. He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list?

Someone doesn’t want this wedding to go ahead and someone won’t leave this island alive but who? Lucy Clarke’s, One of the Girls will keep you guessing until the very end.
