Qeshm, Iran As well as being the largest island in the Persian Gulf, dolphin-shaped Qeshm, 135km-long and between 10 and 40km wide, is also the most spectacular. Thanks to its amazing canyons, salt domes and salt caves (it boasts the longest salt cave in the world, Namakdan, more than 6km deep, with salt stalactites, crystals and snow-like saltwater springs said to cure asthma), this mountainous island sandwiched between Iran and the UAE is home to the Middle East’s only Geo Park. Parts of the porous-rock island are like gargantuan labyrinths. The Chahkouh Pass has been transformed from natural barrenness into a wildlife haven due to centuries of human intervention, making shallow wells and canals to store rainwater in gypsum layers. The northern half of the island is the most important harra, or floating mangrove, habitat in the Gulf, a sea-jungle with 2m-sized sea turtles, a mud-eating amphibian and pelicans among the numerous fauna. Curious fact: Star Valley gets its name from a fable that a star fell from the sky to create the multi-directional canyon. The weird sound the wind makes as it whistles around the rocks ensures locals don’t visit after dark as they believe it is full of spirits. 113
