Gauguin tuvalinin ortasından bağıran kocaman titrek harflerle sormuştu, ”Kimiz? Nereden geliyoruz? Nereye gidiyoruz?”

Gauguin had asked with quivering bold words, shouting from the middle of the canvas:“Who are we? Where do we come from? Where do we go to?”

Nereye gidiyoruz?

Yüzyılımızın cevabını, Marburg’da bir bankanın şehrin sokaklarını donatan reklamlarında görmüştüm. Afişlerde genç kadın, kararlı adımlarla sokakta yürüyor. Resminin altında bankanın logosuyla şu cümle, “Nereye gideceğini biliyor.

Varmasına yardımcı olacağız.”

Altında küçük yazılarla bankanın yüzde kaçtan borç verdiği…

Geleceği bilmek.

Geleceği satmak.

Kimlerdi başkalarından önce ayın, güneşin tutulacağını kestiren?

Geleceği bildiler.

Hükmettiler.

Emperyal güç Amerika’nın başkanı Reagan, her dem bir yerde savaşta olan ordularına yeni bir ülkeye saldır emrini vermeden Beyaz Saray’a falcısını çağırırmış.

Ne kadar güçlü olursan ol, güç kehanet değil.

Kehanet bağımlısı güçlüler.

Lakin masallarımızda, mitolojilerimizde kördür geleceği gören en ünlü kâhinler.

Ne kadar az görürlerse, daha çok inanırız.

Kimiz?

Ayda insan yürüdü. Uydularımız asteroidlerden yıldız tozuyla döndü, Laboratuvarda doğurduk doğum yapmayan kuzu Dolly’nin ikizini. Descartes düşünüp var olurken, Einstein uzaya gidenlerin daha genç döneceğini, Yunus kendimizi kendimizde bulacağımızı söyledi.

Where do we go to?

My first encounter with the answer (of our century) was in the advertisements of a bank adorning the streets of Marburg. On the billboards, there was a young woman walking down the street with determination. Under the picture was this statement with the bank logo: “She knows where she’s going. We shall help her get there”.

Below were the interest rates in small letters.

Knowing the future.

Selling the future.

Who were they; those who predicted the eclipses before anyone?

They knew the future.

They “decided”.

Reagan, former president of an imperial power, the United States, used to consult his fortune-teller at the White House before ordering his troops-always in war in some place-to attack another country!

Regardless of how powerful you are, power is not a prophecy.

Those with power are addicted to prophecies.

Nevertheless, most notable predictors in our tales and myths are blind.

The less they see, the more we believe in them.

Who are we?

Man walked on the moon. Our satellites returned from the asteroids with stardust. We gave birth to the twin of Dolly the lamb, in a laboratory. While Descartes existed because he was thinking, Einstein told that those who space-travelled would return younger, and Yunus said that one should look within (himself) to find himself.

Lakin Sokrat “Kendini tanı” dediğinden bu yana dere tepe düz gittik, bir arpa boyu yol gidemedik. Nice yazarın, imamın, feylesofun çabasına rağmen kendimizi tanıyamadık.

Nereden geliyoruz?

Darwin soy ağacımızda şempanzelerin olduğunu kanıtladı. İnanmadık. DNA’lar öyledir deyince bir kez daha şaştık.

Atalarımıza taptık. Sahip çıktık. Onlar adına geleneklerimizi oluşturup sürdürdük. Onlar adına savaştık. Sonra öğrendik ki, hepimiz başlangıçta Afrika’dan yola çıkmışız bundan 60,000 yıl kadar önce. Topraktan, sudan geldiğimizi sanıyorduk.

Biliyoruz ki bizim gibi evrende ne varsa, hepimiz, her şey, yıldız tozundan. Büyük patlamadan geldik dediler, bizi Samanyolu’nda adresimize yerleştirdiler.

Lakin şimdi fizikçilerimizin odak noktası paralel evrenler.

Sıkıldınızsa kendimizi asırlardır tutsak ettiğimiz “Kimiz,” “Nereden geliyoruz?” sorularından,” sizi dünyaya Şiir’in gözünden, Şiir’in resmiyle bakmaya davet ediyorum.

Kaostantin’de yaşayan Kaostantinlileriz hepimiz. Özellikle ve nihayet yüzyılımızda farkına varmaya başladık.

Esas olan belirsizlik ve değişim. Şiir’in resimleri, bir gün zapt edildiğinde zamanın sonu gelecek kehanetini reddeden, her zapt edilişinde boyun eğmeden, anın yalın fakat çapraşık yoğunluğunda kendini kaybeden bir dünya başkentinin, ruh halinden kesitler.

Nonetheless, since Socrates commanded “Know Thyself”, we walked a long way, yet without much progress! We failed to get to “know” ourselves despite the futile efforts of so many writers, philosophers and imams.

Where do we come from?

Darwin proved that chimpanzees belonged to our family-tree which we did not believe and when the “DNA”s proved it, we once again were taken aback. We worshiped our ancestors.

We embraced them. We enabled and sustained our traditions on their account. We fought in their name. Then we learned that actually we all started our initial journey from Africa sometime around 60.000 years ago. We believed that we were made of soil and water. Now we know that just like all of us, everything existing in the universe, is made of stardust. They told us that we were products of the Big Bang and located us in an address on the Milky Way. But now again “parallel universes” are the focus point of all physicists.

If you are bored by all these questions that have been capturing us for centuries trying to find an answer to “who we are “ and “where we came from”, I would gladly like to invite you to observe the world through Siir’s eyes and her paintings.

We, all of us are Chaostantinians living in Chaostantine Especially and at long last we started realizing in this century.

What is real is uncertainty and change.

Siir’s paintings are sequences from the state of mind of a world capital which rejects the prophecy that “time” will cease to exist when it is captured one day, a capital losing itself in the plain but still complex density of the “moment”, resisting to yield after each new capture.

ŞİİR ÖZBILGE: CHILDREN SPEAK THE TRUTH!

Şiir Özbilge, yirmi yıldır çocuklarla birlikte çalışıyor, onlarla atölyeler düzenliyor. Özellikle yurt dışında, çift kültürlü, dil bilmeyen çocuklarla çalışırken resmin bir dil olarak çok güçlü olduğunu ve çocukların kendilerini resimlerle ifade edebildiklerinde rahatladıklarını gördüğünü belirten Özbilge, resmi iletişim kurmanın en önemli öğelerinden biri olarak görüyor. Türkiye’nin çokkültürlü, çok katmanlı yapısı gibi, resim sanatının algılanışının da birbirinden çok farklı olduğunu; birbirimizi anladıkça bir arada yaşamanın çok daha yapıcı kuşatıcı olabileceğini ve resimlerimiz aracılığıyla birbirimizi ötekileştirmenin tehlikesinden birazcık olsun uzaklaşabileceğimizi dile getiriyor.

Şiir Özbilge’nin kendi resimleri de, birlikte çalıştığı çocukların resimlerinden oldukça etkileniyor. Özbilge, “aslında bu figürler biraz da onlarla resim yaparken, mükemmel çizimler konusunda kendimi kısıtlamamla başladılar çünkü çocuk, karşısında kendisinden çok daha iyi resim yapan birini gördüğünde kendini resimle ifade etmekten korkuyor ve “ben yapamam” demeye başlıyor” ifadeleriyle açıklıyor bu süreci. Şiir’in bu ilk sergisinde gördüğümüz resimler de, yukarıda anlatılan sürecin bir parçası. Şiir’in ana konusu ise, İstanbul’un çokkültürlü, çok katmanlı yapısı. İstanbul’un antik çağdaki adının Konstantinapolis olduğunu hepimiz bildiğimize göre, kentin Şiir’ce ismini hatırlatarak işe başlayalım: Kaostantin!

Zaten sergiye girişimiz de böyle başlıyor; ana yolda, bisikletli bir “Misafir” var ve misafirimiz Kaostantin yönün doğru hızla ilerliyor. Sergi, bir anlamda bu kaos kentine yeni gelen “Misafir”imizin gözünden izleniyor. Şiir Özbilge, “Herhalde bu karmaşık dönem bitecek ve başka bir İstanbul ile yaşayacağız.

Yolda elenecek bir sürü varoluş kipi, geriye kalanlar ve yenilerle devam edilecek... Göçle kente yamananları homojenleştirerek öğütecek sistem. Belki bir yandan özleyeceğiz çeşitliliği, bir yandan da rahat edecek kafalar karmaşadan kurtulmuş olduğu için kim bilir... Ya da böyle gelmiş böyle gidecek” diyor, kaos kenti İstanbul için ve resimlerinde de bu kaosu, çocuk-yetişkin figürleriyle anlatıyor.

with children since 20 years. Ozbilge states that especially based on her experiences with bicultural, monolingual kids abroad, she has witnessed that painting -being a powerful language- when used as a means of expression is highly effective in comforting them. Therefore the artist strongly believes that painting is one of the most essential elements of communication. She mentions that similar to the multicultural, multilayered structure of Turkey, the perception of the art of painting is largely diverse as well and that the act of living together can turn out to be much more constructive and embracing if we understand each other better. She believes that by means of our paintings, we will in the least, have the opportunity to recede from the danger of marginalizing each other.

The paintings of Siir Ozbilge are considerably influenced by those of the children she works with. She tries to explain this process by these words: “Actually my figures developed as a result of my self-constraint in producing perfect drawings. For a child seeing another person much more competent in drawing, easily shies away from expressing himself through this and starts to claim that he/she is not able to do it.”

The paintings we can observe in the first solo exhibition of Siir are a part of this whole process. The multicultural, multilayered structure of Istanbul is the main theme of the artist. As we all know that the name of Istanbul in ancient times was Constantinople, let us start by reminding the name of the city according to Siir, namely Chaostantin! As a matter of fact, the lead into the exhibition is likewise; there is a “Visitor” riding a bike on the main road speeding toward the direction Chaostantin.

The exhibition in a way can be viewed through the eyes of this “Visitor” that seems to have newly arrived in this chaotic city. “Most probably this complex period will come to an end soon, confronting us all with another (form of) İstanbul to live in. Eliminating several paradigms of existence on the way we will continue with what’s left and what’s new… Those who have been patched to the city with immigration will be homogenized and crushed by the system. We may miss this diversity at first, but on the other hand, who knows, maybe our minds will freshen up a bit due to the relief from all that complexity… Or maybe that’s the way it was, that’s the way it will be forever.” These are Siir’s predictions concerning this chaotic city, Istanbul. She chooses to illustrate this chaos in her paintings through figures of child adults.

Kültürler arasına çizilen sınırları, farklı mahallelerin farklı kültürlerin temsilcisi ve hatta savunucusu olduğunu anlatan “Getto”, Özbilge’nin resimleri arasında kentteki karmaşayı anlatan önemli örneklerden biri. “Göç” adlı resminde, kiraz ağacını da el arabasına yüklemiş getiren bir yaşlı kadın çıkıyor karşımıza; yani İstanbul, misafirlerini olduğu kadar onların kültürlerini de ağırlıyor. “Merkezkaç”ta, bir kubbe altında birbirine sıkı sıkı tutunmuş insanlar görüyoruz ancak hepsinin merkezkaç kuvvetiyle dağılması an meselesi! “Paramparça”daki, kafaları gövdelerinden ayrılmış, sağa sola sürüklenen ve büyük bir ayak izinin dört yöne savurduğu insanlar, tam da bu anı ifade ediyor belki. Bir sonraki aşamada, “Yama”da, kent yine kendini yamayarak bütün kültürleri bağrına basıyor. Nereye kadar, kim bilir! Şiddet de, kentin içinde barındırdığı en belirgin öğelerden biri, hiç şüphesiz. “Kavga”, tam da bu şiddetin göstergesi.

Farklılıklara tahammülü olmayan bir birliktelik. “Taraftar”, bu açıdan bakıldığında daha mutlu bir resim; en azından uğrunda birleşip bayrak sallamamızı sağlıyor! “İstanblues” ve “Sokakta” adlı resimler de, yine birlikte yapabileceklerimizi gösteriyor bize ve sokak kültürünün önemine işaret ediyor. Şiir Özbilge’nin resimlerine bakan dikkatli bir göz, onun Flaman usta Brueghel’e olan hayranlığının ayırdına varabilir. Çocuk oyunlarını bir çember etrafında bir araya getiren “Mahalle” ile karnı mühimmat deposu olarak kullanılmış balığın baş aktör olduğu “Brueghel’e Saygı”, Şiir’in Brueghel’in mirasının takipçisi olduğunu bize açıkça anlatan örnekler. Pieter Brueghel’in (1525-1569) resimlerinde gördüğümüz temaların, yani savaşların, yıkımların, perişan insanların ve bu kaosun, aslında o zorlu dönem için bir dayanışmayı önerdiğini unutmayalım.

Brueghel, bir yandan şiddetli temalarıyla savaşlara, yıkıma karşı tepkisini dile getirirken, diğer yandan da hepimizin aynı çocuk oyunlarıyla büyüdüğümüzü bize hatırlatan ve bir ortak payda altında buluşmamızın mümkün olduğunu anlatan resimleriyle, bizi saflığa davet eder. Şiir’in resimlerinin verdiği mesaj da bu: Aynı şemsiyenin altında toplanabilmemiz için hiçbir engel yok; yeter ki çocuklar gibi saf olabilelim!

“Ghetto”, claiming to represent and be a defender of different cultures of different neighborhoods, is telling us about the borders drawn between cultures and therefore is one of the important examples among Ozbilge’s paintings underlining the chaos in the city. In “Immigration” we are confronted with an old woman who is pushing a wheelbarrow loaded by her cherry tree, showing us once again that Istanbul is not only hosting its visitors but also their cultures. We see people closely hanging on to each other under the protection of a dome in “Centrifuge”. But sadly due to the centrifugal force they are subject to, their break-up is only a matter of time! It seems that beheaded people in “Shattered” drifting here and there, scattered by a huge footprint to the four winds, are possibly picturing this very moment. In the next instance “Patchwork”, the city is patching itself to cherish all kinds of cultures present within it. How far or till when, who knows?!

Violence is another distinctive element the city holds within, that’s for sure. An exact sign of this violence can be seen in “Fighting”. A “togetherness” intolerant towards diversities. Viewed from this aspect, “Follower” is a much more joyful piece; at least about something seen as worthwhile -by many of us- to unite under a flag!

“Istanblues” and “On the Street” are again pieces that show us what we are able to achieve collectively and indicate the importance of street culture.

Attentive eyes examining Siir Ozbilge’s works, will easily recognize her admiration for the great Flemish master Brueghel.

“Neighborhood” gathering children’s games around a circle and “In memory of Brueghel” where a fish used as an ammunition dump plays the lead, are obvious examples evidencing that Siir is a true follower of the inheritance of Brueghel. Let us not forget that the themes of Pieter Brueghel’s (1525-1569) paintings such as wars, destructions, miserable people and the overall chaos still suggest people’s solidarity as a solution for the challenging circumstances of the period. Brueghel while expressing his reaction against all the wars, destructions of the time through his violent themes in his paintings, on the other hand reminds us that we all grew up playing the same children’s games, that we still have the chance to meet on common ground and thereby invites us all to purity. It’s the same message Siir’s paintings are conveying us: There is absolutely nothing that can prevent people from gathering under the same big umbrella, as long as they all manage to remain as pure as children!
