Message From The Head of School Happy New Year, KV Community!

Now more than three weeks into the second semester, I trust that all of our families are settling into the new routines of our transition back to full face-to-face learning. After 22 months of various learning modes, it is a blessing to be permitted to invite our entire school back to campus. Of course, this transition has not been without its challenges.

We anticipate that challenges will continue to come up; however, I am confident that our team will respond effectively to maintain a healthy, safe, inperson learning environment. Since this pandemic continues to evolve, so must our response protocols. The school will soon share information on our revised response procedures with all SPH parents.

Moving forward, SPH Kemang Village will continue to provide and prioritize face-face learning under permissions granted by the government. This learning mode is best for our students and our community, assisting us all in acclimating to life with COVID continuing to circulate. I also want to reassure parents that for the remainder of term 3, we will continue to offer a synchronous online option for students who cannot attend or choose not to attend in person. A decision regarding this learning mode for the final term of the year will be made before the term break, which runs from February 28 to March 4.

Thanks for taking some time to read through this newsletter. I hope that you will find the content in it both encouraging and informative as we highlight our learning program, school facilities developments, and some exemplary work done by a couple of our students in the area of service learning.

2 | HYBRID LEARNING UPDATE

We have completed the first semester of this 2021-2022 Academic Year. Over 20 weeks or so, our students experienced a variety of school mode settings. We started with whole online learning and, after a short period, moved to hybrid learning with varying school hours for Grade 6 to Grade 12 students. We then opened hybrid learning for students for Grade 5 and below. The last few weeks have allowed for a significant number of our students a sense of regular school, as regular as a three-day onsite and two-day online school can be.

As we start our second semester of school, we are now preparing our school facilities for our students to move to more normal school learning. Normal school learning is a five-day-aweek school attendance with regular school hours, with all students being welcome on-site and in the building for face-to-face learning. We have been long waiting for this final transition to herald the start of a return to normal. Over the past 21 months, we learned that we could survive and even thrive, a little for some and a lot for others, in a digital environment with minimal in-person interaction. But we are also absolutely convinced that digital interaction is a very dim replication of real in-person interaction filled with the verbal and non-verbal nuances lost in the endemic of poor net connection.

We are excited to have students return to the building for their learning is an understatement.

We are ecstatic to return to busy and noisy classrooms, where students can enjoy learning alongside their friends and teachers. We are thrilled to return to regular school days every day of the week where teachers and students can daily encourage and propel one another towards progress. We are thankful for the KV Community (teachers, staff, and parents) that continue to work together to ensure the betterment of all the students safely and healthily. Above all, we remain grateful that the Lord remains faithful to us in His protection and care for each of us.

Kindy Hybrid Learning It’s always awe-inspiring to see the children get excited over a fantastic discovery. Their eyes light up when they realize how materials relate to one another. How they squeal in delight when substances react to each other! There is definitely no shortage of fun, discovery, and learning in our hybrid classroom.

Our home learning packages provide learning invitations that encourage children to explore concepts, materials, and processes. Whether in school or at home, they develop observation skills, learn to predict and form theories, and begin to synthesize information and make conclusions.

The unit Beautiful Creation showed us that the world belongs to God. He is the Creator who has intentionally and purposefully designed everything with His great wisdom. This inspired the students to engage in various creative and academic pursuits. Some activities under this unit included sink or float, mixed media art like the nature collage, planets in outer space, hand x-ray, and creation day sequencing cards.

The unit Celebrations had the children exploring various special events and the traditions that are associated with them. We shared ideas about birthdays, weddings, Parfait Day, Loi Krathong, and Mardi Gras. Then we capped the unit with the Christmas and new year celebrations.

The final languages of learning showed us that the children are competent and can lead us to new knowledge, views, and understanding. Even when provided with the same materials and provocations, they produced unique masterpieces that were fascinating shreds of evidence of what they had learned.

Junior School

Hybrid Learning

The month of October was a milestone for our Junior School classes. We implemented a hybrid classroom that accommodated for students in the classroom and at home. It was an answer to prayer to hear the laughter of kids again coming from classrooms as they were reunited with their teachers and friends.

While the learning experiences widened and students had new opportunities to grow their skills, the most rewarding part has been seeing junior school students reconnecting with old friends and making new friends. We thank God for continuing to sustain the children, families, teachers, staff and wider SPH community during hybrid learning, and we look forward to what is to come in 2022.

Students were able to enjoy many hands-on activities in new ways. Classes like Grade 1 wrote letters to their pen pal from a school in New York.

Grade 2 gave presentations about habitats using dioramas. Grade 3 created and modeled T-shirt book reports about Charlotte's Web. Grade 4 made models of animals of their choice and presented them to their teachers and peers.

Grade 5 was spotted testing the laws of motion in the hallway with their paper airplanes.

Senior School

Whole Day Hybrid Learning Nearly everyone retains indelible memories of high school and the opportunities, fears, and challenges it held. Young people at this age are developing not only academically but also emotionally and socially! A significant concern for SPH Senior School has been watching our students navigate this portion of their school lives abridged and disembodied.

Coming back to school and seeing real faces feels not only more natural; it feels right. So, despite the significant challenges this hybrid stage presents, both teachers and students have found themselves eager to embrace this new phase of education.

Particularly exciting for students has been the long-awaited relaunch of Passion Block activities. According to Ayra (g11), "I’m really excited that Passion Block is starting back up, especially since I’m co-leading a club during this period this year. Passion block previously had provided me many opportunities to explore what I can’t in regular classes such as creative writing and knowledge on criminology. Now, I get to share my own experiences and skills with my fellow schoolmates!" Second semester Passion Block topics include Model UN, Debate, Coding, 3D Printing, Indonesian Culture, Mural Painting, Studnet-Led Magazine, Music, Hydroponics, and more. This one-hour time slot will also be used by our SS teachers to provide extra academic support for studn3ts who may be struggling.

With students learning in school, they can now further develop their inquiry and manipulative skills through science experiments. They finally have optimal circumstances to apply their scientific knowledge through regular laboratory activities. More than that, students can directly interact and collaborate. Reflecting on her hybrid experience, Ian (g11) explains, “It is undoubtedly a great experience and privilege to be at school. The most exciting part of science subjects are the experiments, being in science labs, and getting my hands in them in real life. I now can watch the process of an experiment, not theoretically, and writing reports of the experiment allowed me to reflect on what I have done. Being on campus is a great advantage indeed; I doubt myself doing as much as I do right now if I did not join in for our school’s hybrid learning.”

3 | RENOVATION UPDATE

Campus Renovation Update We have taken full advantage of an empty campus over the past two years to complete some needed updates and improvements in our facility.

Two of these areas are on the G/F of our school: our canteen and our indoor play area.

Our canteen is receiving its final touches this week as the entire kitchen area has been redone and upgraded to professional-grade fixtures and appliances. We are excited to hand the keys back to our vendor M68 who will continue to use the facility to provide quality, affordable meals to KV students and employees.

KV's Indoor Play area and playground project started in February 2020 and progressed through several pandemic-related delays.

We are anticipating a full launch of these areas for students in the final term of the school year. This will be an exciting space with lots of engaging new equipment that will encourage interactive play amongst our JS students.

One other area of note is our new soccer field.

Although the field itself is complete, we are experiencing some permit-related delays in the completion of the access bridge and storage facilities. In spite of these delays, we are diligently working to find ways that we can utilize the playing surface for after-school programming for the remainder of the school year.

4 | WHAT'S ON SPH KEMANG VILLAGE

JS Student Vaccination Clinic Thank you to all parents, teachers, and staff who supported our vaccination day on January 12. We are so grateful that God has provided us with access to this vaccine for our students and see it as a key part of the process of returning to fullon-campus learning at SPH Kemang Village.

The bravery of our students and the compassion of our teachers and staff were on full display as the dedicated team from UPH Medical Faculty vaccinated approximately 150 students.

The clinic for the second dose is scheduled for Wednesday, February 9.

The MSL

Neighbors Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

The MSL Neighbors is a social initiative by SPH Kemang Village students that focuses on helping kids who have dealt with or are currently dealing with different forms of cancer. Their main goal is to provide medical, financial, and emotional aid by building relationships with the children as well as hosting events to raise funds It was founded in 2020 by Tedra Simatupang when she was in 9th Grade and today, the MSL Neighbors are run together by Tedra, Kenneth, Russell, and other friends.

They were inspired to help kids with cancer when they were involved in the SPHKV Moms outreach event with child cancer patients in Yayasan Kanker Anak Indonesia (YKAI). Seeing many child cancer patients around their age, their hearts were moved to start an initiative to continue helping those kids on a more personal level.

"What motivates us is seeing how these kids relentlessly pursue their dreams. These kids are very talented in art, dancing, singing, and a lot more, and we don't want cancer to get in the way of them reaching their full potential," Tedra said.

Until today, the MSL Neighbors have provided Christmas gifts to 200+ children from their “Joy in the box” event.

On December 2021, they also hosted an event where the children got to paint and draw.

We are amazed to see our students' passion and real action to help and serve others. Let us also take part in their cause and be a blessing to children who suffer from cancer!

5 | RE-ENROLLMENT UPDATE

Re-enrollment Update As we enter the second half of the 2021-2022 school year, our team is busy preparing for the launch of the next school year. We are excited to be adding to our facilities as highlighted in this newsletter, as well as building our team of teachers with some key new additions. While we do this, we continue to be committed to improving our academic and co-curricular programs for our students.

Some highlights: We anticipate a return to more normal operations in 2022-2023 with full after-school programming, athletics, clubs, student retreats, and MSL. We are launching a renewed English as an Additional Language support office to more effectively develop student English capacity in all of our classes and grade levels.

We are developing a program to offer our SS students additional options in the area of foreign languages. More information on this will be shared with students as course selections are processed for 2022-2023.
