EVENT HIGHLIGHT

National History Day 2023

Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas

One of my favorite assignments that I’ve given to students for the last 10 years is to make a project to enter the National History Day competition.

Each US state and the International Regional gets to send their top 2 projects to compete at the national finals held in Washington, D.C.

NHD is a yearly competition based out of the United States in which students from all over the USA and the world submit historical research projects based on a yearly theme. It is the “World Cup” of senior school history competitions.

One of the best parts of this project is that like all of the best Project Based Learning it involves a high level of student voice and choice. The students get to pick almost any topic they that interests them and bring history to life by telling untold or rarely told stories from history.

EVENT HIGHLIGHT This year I've had the privilege of supporting two groups of our 9th-grade students in creating fantastic National History Day research projects.

The group of Queentin Naftanel, Nadine Pandapotan, Chloe Teguh, and Valerie Jokowidjaja’s project on Dewi Sartika and early education for women in Indonesia took 3rd place in the Senior Group Exhibit division as well.

The group of Sophia Kuo, Annabelle Huang, Gisella Lim, and Tristany Sutjiadi’s project on the Riot Grrrl Movement was so good that they were able to win first place in the Senior Group Exhibit category at the International National History Day competition, which was held remotely at the Singapore American School.

The group of Queentin Naftanel, Nadine Pandapotan, Chloe Teguh, and Valerie Jokowidjaja’s project on Dewi Sartika and early education for women in Indonesia took 3rd place in the Senior Group Exhibit division as well. While 3rd place does not allow them to compete in the finals, their project was seen and praised by Ibu Rahayu Asih Subekti, the head of the North Jakarta Education Department, especially since they researched a topic on Indonesian History and brought it to life on the world stage. Over 40 schools submitted projects to this competition, including schools in Southeast Asia, China, Canada, and beyond. This was the first year that the international schools in China were added to what used to be the Southeast Asia Regional competition, and it was exciting to see our girls come out on top even with that extra competition!

EVENT HIGHLIGHT Both groups’ projects brought to light hidden stories of women pioneers who challenged the status quo and helped women cross into new frontiers in history.

They have gone through multiple iterations of their project, making revisions along the way. They have worked in class and after class and collaborated in incredible ways.

This means that our winning students will be packing up their improved project and heading to the US in June to compete with the best of the best of each of the US states in the final round. It’s an awesome learning experience, and I am very excited for them to be able to compete with and learn from so many other exceptional students at that competition. They will also be visiting several museums in Washington D.C. while they are there and learning about US history.

They have built research skills and teamwork skills and interviewed people directly involved in the events which they are researching, and have brought to life a side of history that I had never heard of before. They have also made beautiful work, the kind of work that they can take pride in and will remember for years to come. This process of learning and growth is what makes PBL and NHD such a great learning experience for our students at SPH PV. I’m proud of them and so excited to see them represent Indonesia and SPH on the world stage.

I’m excited for what the girls will experience in June this year, but the best part of our students competing in this competition is the way that it causes them to push themselves in ways they never have before.

TEACHER'S FAREWELL MESSAGE

A Chapter Ends, ANother Begins

BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING

Four years really flew by, thanks to Covid and of course, to God who put me as a part of SPH PV family. In those years, God has been my constant provider in different aspects of my life: Physically, the admin staff and leaders helped with making my teaching job become smoother, cleaners who helped set up and cleaning the classroom to be ready for the next day, and fellow teachers who helped subbing and checking in when I was sick.

Spiritually, this community has reminded me to share the gospel with our children every single day and their families, even learning from students that I am not perfect. Yet, they still love me, colleagues who have grown to be family away from home and have supported me with things even outside of school. If I were to summarize four years into a phrase, it would be: Blessed to be a blessing. It’s not a goodbye; it’s a see you again, so please do keep in touch. I appreciate your support for my next journey ahead. May the Lord continue to use PV family to bless more families and to help us grow as a community.

Emotionally, I got support from partners and grade level teachers that I have worked with, the appreciation that PV has given (including the parents), fellow teachers who greeted me in the hallways or even encourage each other throughout the school year whether it be prayers, kind words, or a simple pat on the back.

Regards, Odilia Tandadjaja Grade 1 Homeroom Teacher

TEACHER'S FAREWELL MESSAGE

A Chapter Ends, ANother Begins

SEASON OF LIFE

As teachers returned from their home countries, everyone was so welcoming to Tim Ray, who is my husband, and me. We could tell from the start that we were entering a very supportive Christian community. As we made our transition to Indonesia and even as we gave birth to our daughter, we were surrounded by people who were looking out for us. I loved how we had consistent activities with others, like bible studies, playing sports, weekly dinners, and game nights. We also greatly enjoyed exploring the beautiful country of Indonesia during breaks! Southeast Asia has a unique tropical beauty and welcoming people. I loved exploring nature, new food, and becoming closer to friends as we traveled.

I started working at SPH Pluit Village in July 2021, when a new wave of COVID had just hit, and most businesses were closed. Students had already been online for over a year, and I was coming in to teach them music without ever meeting in person. I was so impressed by the student's willingness to try new things and openness to me as their teacher.

This was a unique blessing that we may not have in the future when we move back to the U.S. We are so thankful for the season of living in this community and the lifelong friends we made here these last two years. Regards, Emily Ray Junior School Music Teacher
