WHAT IS “DESIGNART TOKYO” ? デザインとアートの出会いを楽しむために DESIGNART TOKYO is a design and art festival where visitors can enjoy various exhibitions within eight areas in Tokyo while walking around the city. Eminent creatives from around the world converge in Tokyo, one of the world’s most culturally diverse cities, to hold various exhibitions across the city and in various genres, including interior design, art, fashion, technology, and food.

A wide variety of creators from across genres and from all over the world will exhibit in shops, galleries and event spaces in the central area of Tokyo. Here are some must-see works. During this 10-day event, the entire city of Tokyo is transformed into a museum of design and art, featuring a collection of innovative works by high-profile creators, including installations, interior designs, and art works. ＠A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE / AOYAMA ＠ISSEY MIYAKE GINZA / 442 A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE has re-edited their exhibition presented at this year ’s Milan Design Week. Prototypes suggesting possibilities that go beyond clothing are being exhibited at A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE / AOYAMA and ISSEY MIYAKE GINZA / 442. In collaboration with Nature Architect, this project addresses the role of design in structure, materials, and manufacturing and how they are integrated into the crafting process. The project explores the new possibilities of a single piece of cloth by combining the latest design solutions with A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE ’s crafting system.

積彩 / RGB_ Light / DEW ＠100BANCH 100BANCH was established in 2017 based on the concept of “an experimental zone for enriching the world 100 years from now.”

100BANCH has been supporting innovative projects under the GARAGE Program by providing them with places for activity. This exhibition features three groups of creators from 100BANCH, who produce new values that transcend the boundaries of their fields. Centering around accessories and interior furniture by Sekisai, the collection also presents lights that create colorful shadows using RGB_Light by Midori Kawano, and products like DEW, inspired by Ryoji Takahashi ’s technology combined with Japanese culture. 「100 年先の世界を豊かにするための実験区」というコンセプトのもとに 2017 年 に誕生した100BANCH は、GARAGE Program と称しイノベーティブなプロジェ クトに活動場所の提供などの支援をおこなってきました。本展示は 100BANCH のクリエイターから領域を超えた新しい価値をつくりあげる 3 組の展示を開催し ます。積彩によるアクセサリーや家具の展示を中心に、河野未彩の RGB_Light による彩のある影を生むライト、高橋良爾によるテクノロジー×日本的文化からイ ンスピレーションをうけた DEW などの作品をご覧いただけます。

Per Suntum / ジュエリーアーティスト（人間国宝） Michael Geertsen / 陶芸家 Charlotte Thorup / 陶芸家 Jakob Jørgensen / 彫刻家・家具デザイナー Line Depping / 家具デザイナー Iben Birch Bech / テキスタイルアーティスト Gerner&Jahncke / 陶芸・ガラスアーティスト Kaori Juzu / ジュエリーアーティスト Bornholm, one of the Danish islands in the Baltic Sea, was the first island in the world to be awarded the title of“ World Craft Region Bornholm”in 2017, the highest recognition in the field of arts and crafts by the UNESCO-acknowledged World Craft Council ( WCC). This is the first exhibition in Japan of eight groups of nine contemporary craft artists representing Bornholm Island, featuring furniture, ceramics, jewelry, etc.

The exhibition is curated by jewelry artist KAORI JUZU, who previously moved to the island. *The exhibition will be held exclusively from October 26th to 28th only. Nurture」は、 「流木」を素材として再認識するプロジェクトです。流木は「木」というには不自 然で、 「木材」と呼ぶには歪な存在ですが、 「山で育った木が、海でとれる」という点に着目する とそこに独立した素材観が見えてくると田渡は考えます。森での時間を木目として刻み、海洋で の時間をテクスチャーとして刻み直す流木を「山と海の両方の時間を内包する複雑な素材」と して捉えたインテリアマテリアルの展示をおこないます。

At Time & Style Atmosphere in Minami-Aoyama, visitors can view new products while unraveling the relationship between Time & Style Atmosphere (Minami Aoyama), DRILL DESIGN ’s new product Diamond back and Claesson Koivisto Rune’s unreleased lounge chairs will be exhibit. In addition, Time & Style Midtown is presenting a special exhibition of Peter Zumthor ’s collection of furniture, designed for architectural projects that have taken over half a century to realize. the experimental design guild MULTISTANDARD, is a project to reconceptualise “ driftwood ” as a material. Driftwood is unnatural to be called “ wood ” and distorted to be called “ timber ”, but he thinks that if we focus on the fact that “ wood grown in the mountains is caught from the sea”, we can see an independent view of the material. This exhibition presents driftwood as a “complex material that encompasses both mountain and sea periods”, with the time spent in the forests carved into the wood's grain and the time spent at sea re-engraved into its texture.

Joint Exhibition × SEIBU SHIBUYA ＠SEIBU SHIBUYA Crossing borders between traditional crafts, media art, and product design, 5creators are exhibiting various exhibitions at SEIBU SHIBUYA. FIXED TETRAS by Masafumi Futo, which focuses on the beauty of the shape of the vanishing wave block as a structure, and the Yasuto Nakanishi Laboratory from the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Keio University, advancing the development of furniture robots and playground equipment robots, creates a futuristic space with different robots. The Nomadic Collective, a collective of four product designers, and PHAT exhibits interior pieces made from surplus materials, are among the other featured exhibits gathered at SEIBU SHIBUYA. Mai Suzuki 鈴木 舞 Born in 1998 in Tokyo. Initiated project “ 生粋 namaiki ” by herself, a Japanese aesthetic sense. She explores “iki ” from various perspectives through the traditional craft of “Kumiko ”. She learned the techniques under Kumiko craftsmen and created 3D models of the parts.

Kentaro Ishida studied architecture in London.

He collaborated with Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron from 2004-2012. During his collaboration with H&dM he was leading series of international projects as an Associate including Perez Art Museum Miami, Triangle in Paris, and Cultural Complex Luz in Sao Paulo. The word‘ Biomorphism’refers to abstract forms or images that evoke naturally occurring forms such as plants, organisms and body parts.

This group showcases work that relates to these natural forms in a contemporary way, and is suitable for contemporary or future living spaces.

These works are made or assembled using recycled materials, offcuts or leftovers (such as recycled or discarded plastic, construction, post-consumer or agricultural waste). As we move into the future, the growing scarcity of natural resources will only become more urgent; these works may point a way forward.

The Belle Epoque, situated between wars and other hardships, was a period of economic prosperity, an era of cultural and artistic exuberance, and a time of excess and hedonism. This is somewhat mirrored in our politically unstable post-pandemic world, in which people crave enjoyment and fulfilment.

With continuing rapid globalisation, we are seeing skills for the creation of fine art and craft being lost. But designers in East Asia are playing a key role in saving and preserving traditional skills, techniques and materials, and by doing so are playing a role in keeping that cultural history alive for subsequent generations.

Fernando Laposse フェルナンド・ラポッセ

Fernando Laposse is a Mexican designer and artist based in London. He specializes in transforming humble natural materials such as sisal, loofah, corn leaves and other overlooked plant fibers into refined design pieces. He also works with indigenous communities in his native Mexico to create local employment opportunities and raise awareness of environmental issues. His projects have been exhibited at the Triennale di Milano, the Victoria and Albert Museum and many other venues.
