the written submission of Dongjie Ma for Digital Product Design program in Sheridan I still remember when I was 13 which was in 2010, my friend was showing me his Nokia smartphone with Symbian os. It was the year where iPhone 4 was launched and shook the world. I was surprised that one handy device could do so many things and that’s the magic of a mobile operating system. Later I had my first LG feature phone, but I always dream of having a smartphone. I spent all of my off-school time viewing technology news, and my favorite thing to do was to try different phones on the digital malls. I realized my obsession with smartphones was not only about their industrial design about also with their UI design. I don't know if anyone else does this like me, but I always imagine another virtual world in my head when I am walking. before I went to college in 2015, I already imagined and designed two operating systems in my brain (And one of them even upgraded to the 9th generation). approaching the last year of my high school I realized UI/UX design was my passion, so I started preparing for the national art school entry examination cause I would only be qualified to apply for this program in the university if I passed this exam. I had never been supported by the family so I started my art study very late. for other reasons, I finally studied architecture at the university. I spent 5 years in the university, and the studio of industrial design students was on the lower floor of our teaching building. I had some fun from architecture study but sometimes I was thinking about how would I live if I choose to study industrial design and work on my user experience design. Since I graduated, I started my practice in architecture, brand, and graphic design. but I always want to have a chance to enter UX/UI design. That's why I have chosen to apply to this Digital Product Design program.

I expected to learn more about UI/UX design and programming knowledge. he programing courses of this program could really help me with running and achieving my prototype, and that makes me excited.I hope I could make a beautiful and futuristic operating system design like OS1 in the movie Her. After learning all the knowledge and skills which this program will provide me, I believe it's a touchable future.

the written submission of Dongjie Ma for Digital Product Design program in Sheridan One of my favorite apps is Duolingo. I feel it's well-designed cause it really helps people to study a new language with motivation, and make learning a new language as playing games.

As humans, our human nature is lazy and procrastinating. Studying a new language looks like a huge project and people have motivations but hardly take action. To solve this problem, Duolingo divides each course to a 5 mins long courses and built a check-in streak, badge, and ranking system, which would push you to learn every day. Because I want to keep my 300 days streak, or I want to rank No.1 from the EXP ranks. Not only in terms of course design, but Duolingo also introduces many props and gameplay to enhance user participation. Including time-limited punch-in activities, double EXP points within 15 minutes. These moves can easily make you willing to learn more on the app every day. I think this is the kind of thinking that brings the logic of gaming products to our applications.

Besides the design of the features, Duolingo also has a good visual system. They designed different characters, these characters have names, voices, identities, and personalities. They also had a color and visual language which applied to everything. These design details bring much more richness to their app.

MTS Line 2 Metro Screen Design

Pyongyang Metro may be the most mysterious subway system in the world.

Founded in the 1960s, it was officially put into operation in September 1973.

It is a must-see experience for foreign tourists visiting North Korea. For those who have not been to Pyongyang, the only way they can know about Pyongyang Metro is seeing the photos taken by tourists.

We can also see the interactive line map used by Pyongyang metro stations.

Just press the button of the metro station you want to go to, it could guide you by a lighten line. North Korea also has some external websites that still maintain a design style similar to that of 15 years ago. For propaganda purposes, these outreach sites are available in as many as seven languages.

I try to design a website for Pyongyang Metro, and start from the design style of today's North Korean website and gradually evolve it into a contemporary concise website design language. I redesigned the logo of the North Korean subway and simplified its name to PyM.
