ECHOING VALUES Final Year Project - June 2020
Barracks used to accommodate quarrymen from the island of Anglesey; usually 4 working members of the family would occupy one cottage. In 1948, they were condemned as unfit for human habitation and from that point the structure fell into disrepair while the region slowly transformed into a tourist destination.

My objective is reviving a vernacular formintroverted arrangement with courtyard. Mass of the new extension is shaped by topography and 16 barracks are used as a single accommodation unit to preserve integrity value and exemplify vernacular living.

People in the past interacted with the surroundings through quarrying and engineering while my proposal seeks to invert this process – use of contrast to highlight Genius loci.

Although made of wood sections and not crystals, the ‘chandelier’ - a symbol of wealthwould celebrate the legacy of simple men. Below is a lobby – dark and narrow space could make a negative impression therefore I have developed a void that would function as a skylight during the day and by night it would light up a common room. To achieve the desired lighting effect, I studied different parts of the human skeleton.

Red circles highlight use of golden ratio which helps to morph the grid while minimizing intervention with the forest.
