Sijo

SIJO (Korea’s Poetry Form)

The sijo (Korean 시조, pronounced SHEE-jo) are written in three lines, each averaging 1416 syllables for a total of 44-46 syllables. Each line is written in four groups of syllables that should be clearly differentiated from the other groups, yet still flow together as a single line. When written in English, sijo may be written in six lines

The first line is usually written in a 3-4-4-4 grouping pattern and states the poem’s theme, where a situation is generally introduced.

The second line is usually written in a 3-4-4-4 pattern and is an elaboration of the first line's theme or situation (development).

The third line (3-5-4-3) is divided into two parts. The first section, the counter-theme, is grouped as 3-5, while the second part, considered the conclusion of the poem, is written as 4-3. The counter-theme is called the 'twist,' which is usually a surprise in meaning, sound, or other device.

A slur of crickets builds tension and tensile strength noises, winding and unwinding, violin strings snapping every night.

I shout stop. Silence in the hot night. Then frogs start bassoons.

Father’s Chair

Rain patters down the patio. Drip- dripping on Father’s chair. Puddle collects round plastic legs, a little lake to soak his feet.

Still I watch as days turn to months, for Father to come and sit back down.

Sejong Cultural Society

Mission

The Sejong Cultural Society strives to advance awareness and understanding of Korea's cultural heritage amongst people in the United States by reaching out to the younger generations through contemporary creative and fine arts.

Programs

Music Competition - The Sejong Music Competition seeks to both encourage talented young musicians in their studies and introduce traditional Korean musical themes to young musicians.

Writing Competition - Open to pre-college students and young adults, the Sejong Writing Competition is divided into two categories:

Focusing on introducing students to Korean culture and history through literature, our essay category utilizes folk tales and contemporary literature to explore Korean culture, past and present.

The sijo competition brings the sijo, a classic example of traditional Korean fine arts, to a modern English-speaking audience as a unique form of poetry.
