CABINET OF CURIOSITIES Cabinets of curiosities served not only as collections to reflect the particular curiosities of their curators but as social devices to establish and uphold rank in society. There are said to be two main types of cabinets. As R. J. W. Evans notes, there could be “the princely cabinet, serving a largely representational function, and dominated by aesthetic concerns and a marked predilection for the exotic,” or the less grandiose, “the more modest collection of the humanist scholar or virtuoso, which served more practical and scientific purposes.”

In addition to cabinets of curiosity serving as an establisher of socioeconomic status for its curator, these cabinets served as entertainment, as particularly illustrated by the proceedings of the Royal Society Places of exhibitions of and places of new societies that promoted natural knowledge also seemed to culture the idea of perfect civility. Some scholars propose that this was “a reaction against the dogmatism and enthusiasm of the English Civil War and Interregnum [sic].[21]” This move to politeness put bars on how one should behave and interact socially, which enabled the distinguishing of the polite from the supposed common or more vulgar members of society The Wunderkammer can be informed by the history of Charleston, a naval city deeply intertwined in the dark history of the United States. This spans a history connected to the maritime industry, war, slavery, and later the industrialization of the South. It’s on display throughout the city in the form of museums, cemeteries, markets, antique shops, historical craftsmen, and evident in the construction antebellum construction of the city.

PRINT PANEL MODEL Geo [the earth] and Tecto [Tectonic/the constructed] have provided shelter for living things since the earliest known times and both have been in constant use and development ever since. Different periods in history and geographic locations have favored one over the other but as a general worldwide trend there has been a growing separation of the two. This is not a call for earth sheltered buildings, roof gardens or even green walls although any of these may be considered as elements of a larger whole. Instead 07PROCESS is a challenge for a balancing of geo and tecto so that both can thrive and compliment each other in innovative, interesting and even inspiring ways.

CONCEPTS AND PROPOSALS

THE CORRIDOR

HIGHWAY UNDERPASS REDEVELOPMENT

This redevelopment will reunite a community that was torn apart through the states exercise of ‘eminent domain’ when constructing the I-275 highway. The concept begins by developing under the I-275 highway, in hopes of connecting the Carter Woods Museum and the New Museum. This would create something much greater than just a community hub, it would create a space of liberation. The project will explore design and program interventions that will activate the pedestrian use of this corridor in accordance with the Deuces Live and Warehouse Arts District Action Plan.

This museum displays three predominant deviations from the norm. The first is in the entrance. The challenge was to create a smooth transition from street (public), to plaza (semi-public), to the museum (private). The second is in the challenging of the public’s relationship with museum culture – that of a community gathering space. The third is in heightening awareness of the social responsibilities of an institution – residents should treat the museum like they own it, because it is theirs. It is the responsibility of any institution to celebrate and uphold its cultural diversity and communities.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM

REIMAGINING MUSEUM AND BUILDING A COMMUNITY HUB

The museum concept was born out of a need to reform the conventional American sentiment of museums.

Eminent domain is defined as ‘the right of a government to expropriate private property for public use’. The museum reimagines how a building’s public areas should be used.

The lobby and visitor center acts as: 1) An engaging public space that draws pedestrians in 2) A gathering spot for local businesses and artist creative spaces to encourage commerce and cultural appreciation, and 3) A connection between the public and the museum itself.

As Terri Lipsey Scott, Director of the Woodson said, “[the museum] is a bridge to bring the community closer. African-American history is American history. It’s a story to be told… to be shared.”
