It is time to join in and help rebuild Nigeria, one community at a time!

Promisedland Ministries Canada is a Christian organisation established by 'Segun and Titi Olude to mobilise individuals, churches and organisations in Nigeria to put their faith into action, and find practical ways to transform their communities.

We have put together this publication for the benefit of those who do not have access to the internet, that you may be able to see the vision that we believe God has for our nation. He said, ”Ask me and I will give the nations for your inheritance.” Psalm 2:8 Promisedland offers training through different seminars designed to meet leadership needs in communities and institutions. By providing training and resources over a sustained period of time, Promisedland’s vision is to encourage leaders within communities, that will spearhead change.

Promisedland also undertakes projects that serve as examples to encourage Nigerians living at home and abroad to put their faith into action and help rebuild the lives and communities that they belong to.

To see change, each person has to take personal responsibility for their own community, whether it be in their homes or in their workplace.

Our own community is our inheritance and our attitude towards it must change! We should guard it and protect it, even speak well of it.

We are all familiar with the concept of neighborhood watch where we set up a plan to keep the neighborhood safe. How about keeping the neighborhood clean? How about setting a

neighborhood vision? How about defining the needs of the community such as good schools, clinics that are well kept, clean water, electricity, clean markets, good yield of crops, viable industries and 100% employment?

It is the role of a leader to define the need and execute the vision! Nigeria needs godly leadership that will lead by example. Our strength as a nation is in looking out for each other in selfless service, not in living for ourselves.

As part of taking ownership of our communities, we need to encourage dialogue that would bring permanent solutions to long standing problems, and not just leave all the work to the government to resolve.

You can begin the dialogue by engaging those who live in the community with you and invite them to a community meeting. This neighborhood is yours you have to take care of it and speak up for it. Set your goals as a community. You get to decide what is appropriate living conditions for yourself and the next generation, your children.

Every parent gets to leave an inheritance for their children; we must not squander ours away!

We hope this magazine will inspire you to take your new steps of faith as you look through the magazine and see photos of like minded people like yourselves that dare to believe and trust God for the transformation of their communities.

In the footsteps of Nehemiah When Nehemiah realized that the walls of his beloved city were thoroughly broken down, he was devastated and he wept,his whole countenance changed. He encouraged himself in the lord in the place of prayer. He found that what seemed impossible for a man was totally possible with God. God gave him a strategy and even the ability to execute the plan.

Similarly we find the “walls” of our own nation broken down, things that worked before are no longer working—the water, electricity, housing, roads, schools, hospitals, government and the list goes on—and everyone feels pretty devastated at the state of affairs in our country. We too will find encouragement with the Lord in the place of prayer. He is willing and able to rebuild the ruins that we see. He will give strategy and ability to execute the plan.

Nehemiah was thinking nationally. His request was on what God would do for his nation not just himself. He found the parts of the wall that was broken and he looked for families that were willing to rebuild.

He also finds that rebuilding the walls, required fighting off the enemy of the cause.

In fact he set up anyone that would join in the rebuilding with a sword to fight off the enemy.

He also encouraged those who were fearful that God was able to do the work, because they encountered many threats.

As Nigerians, our prayers tend to focus on personal problems; we ought to expand our prayer focus to include the whole of the nation, if we are to follow in the footsteps of Nehemiah.

We have many people with gifts and abilities within our communities that should join in the rebuilding of our communities, each one is to use their training and expertise to rebuild their assigned portion of the wall.

We also ought to be prepared to deal with the

enemy of this vision through prayer; we may even have to endure threats but must remain confident that we are executing a plan given by God. Nehemiah was able to complete the rebuilding in 52 days. He kept his focus on the assignment and refused to be distracted by the threats. He was sure God was able to complete the tasks at hand.

Completing the task is not for the timid or weak, it is for those whose hope is fully in God. We have a promise: “If my people those who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray,confess their sins and turn from their wicked way,I will hear from heaven and I will heal the land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14.

We know the plan for re building our nation will be completed. We just need to maintain our focus on God and an unyielding faith in Him despite the circumstances. We are sometimes tempted to resort to our old way of thinking, being overwhelmed by circumstances, but to humble ourselves means we will no longer lean on our own understanding that we will only lean on Him. With our full cooperation, God will rebuild the land.

Become a mentor. Use what is in your hands. You may not be an eloquent preacher, but your professional experience counts for something.

Use it to mentor the up-and-coming in your field of study or area of specialisation.

Provide pre-natal and post-natal care and health information to new mothers. If you are a nurse or healthcare worker, your skill is in great demand.

Go out there and use it to help new mothers.

Fill the potholes in your community.

Potholes cause traffic to slow down and hamper economic activity. Why not rally support from your neighbors and fill up some of the potholes causing havoc in and around your community and get the economy moving.

Organise after-school sport and recreation activities for children and young adults in the community.

Physical activity is an excellent stimulant for the mind, especially for youths. Everyone knows that soccer is our national sport, so, let’s get our youths in the game, and help set their eyes on becoming national champions!

Clean up the market and common areas in the community. The garbage dumped in the drains and gutters are a health hazard for you, your family and your customers. Choose to work in a clean environment and set a better example for those around you, and the next generation.

Nigeria is our promisedland After Joshua had seen the promisedland, he kept the vision in his heart because he believed that God could give them the city.

There were others that went in with him but felt overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. They evaluated the situation by what they could accomplish by themselves and saw themselves as grasshoppers Similarly, leaders who believe that the future of Nigeria will be great must not loose sight of what God can do to transform the nation.

There are many leaders that cannot believe for the transformation of Nigeria because they see it through what they can do by themselves and have adopted the “if you can’t beat them join them” stance. They have ended up just as corrupt as the leaders they once criticized. The healing of our nation is based on God’s promise to bring his people into their land of promise.

For Nigerians, “Nigeria is our Promisedland,” and this knowledge will cause leaders who believe that God can deliver that promise to press onward.

Joshua declared in those days that God was giving them a land flowing with milk and honey,the yields in the land were of biblical proportions. Leaders in Nigeria today must come to the realization that Nigeria is such a land with vast resources including being the worlds 13th oil producing country, please refer to the 36 Quick Facts About Nigeria in this publication. God is faithful. He has blessed Nigeria with so much potential, it’s incredible.

Joshua was told that he must be bold and courageous to be able to take the land. The need of courage means there was something to fear, in fact there were many inhabitants in the land that he had to face and drive out before he could occupy. He was told that he would have to meditate on the word of God and not deviate from it so that he would have good success.

Godly leadership will have to be bold and courageous to face and drive out the things that are currently inhabiting the land. There are many ungodly habits prevailing today in Nigeria.

A leader would have to choose to live differently to be able to walk in the spiritual authority that he would need to prevail and obtain the promise of a transformed nation.

A lifestyle of holiness must be taught to our children, youths, men and women alike because without knowledge, the people perish. A spiritual war must be declared against greed, lack, strife, divisions, lust, pride, lies, idolatry, adultery and the like. These are like land mines or pits that the enemy has dug, hoping to entrap people. Anyone engaging in these things will not inherit the kingdom. Gal 5:20-21. The enemy has been able to maintain his hold upon the land because the people have been falling into these pits.

Joshua was also given the strategies of warfare to tear down the formidable walls of Jericho and in following instructions, the walls fell down flat.

There are many formidable situations in Nigeria that will surely fall down flat, if God’s instructions are followed carefully.

Leaders must stop making excuses and realise that nothing is impossible for our God; they should teach their congregations the same. There are many walls that have been corrupted over the years in our nation and leaders ought to teach their congregation how to wage good warfare as they reclaim the different walls in our society.

The broken walls represent our system of education, water, electricity, housing, health, food, economy to name a few.

“Nigeria is our promisedland.” We really cannot go and lay claim to another nation. Each one of us has to realise that our community is our inheritance and position ourselves spiritually to reclaim all that has been lost.

So let it be. Amen.

Dig a well or a borehole and provide clean water for a community.

Many communities are still drinking from streams, risking water borne diseases.

It should no longer be okay to allow our families drink dirty water.

Provide supplies and equipments for a clinic or dispensary near you. This is a worthy cause for an organization to take up. There are many rural communities and villages that are still without health supplies in their clinics and families have to travel for endless miles to get any health care. Join with others; get your club involved, do something!

Provide school supplies to a school near you. Education will open doors to the future for our children, yet many schools remain without the supplies necessary to properly educate our children. Each school ought to have a small library at the very least— help stock up or build one.

Feed the hungry, clothe the poor.

Thankfully, some churches are already doing this but look around and you will see that many still go to bed hungry, and many more are without adequate clothing. No matter how small, never underestimate your own contribution to positive change.

Set up a prayer group. Prayer is the key that open doors to the change that we want to see in our communities. Set up a time to pray specifically about the things that need to change; invite others to join in your non-denominational community prayer time.

Transformation Seminars:

Presenting a new vision to Nigerians

Promisedland Transformation Seminars are designed for pastors, church workers and community leaders to learn how to transform their communities, not just through prayers, but by harnessing the gifts and talents of the congregation to meet the needs of their communities because the church building is not the church; the community is.

Participants that attend these free seminars come from various churches, denominations and communities, to learn how to use the church as a rallying point and the centre of the communities.

Some of the topics covered in the one-day seminar includes a video-based presentations to show how other communities have been transformed through prayers and acts of service.

There is a biblical teaching on “The Nehemiah Principles,� aimed at preparing leaders and workers for service, and training on how to conduct neighbourhood research, to find out what kinds of resources are in the community, and what it needs. There is also a workshop and discussion session, to brainstorm sustainable programmes for leaders from each community. We conclude

with a prayer session for the transformation of each community represented by the attendees.

Ideas generated in the past include community development projects, community service projects, school outreach programmes and other activities, all of which require little or no monetary commitment that traditionally discouraged people from serving. The seminar ends with a meal provided for free to all participants.

When possible, we provide books, leadership bibles and other printed materials to participants for free, to help them in their christian growth.

SEMINARS

Leadership Seminars:

Strengthening the hands of leaders for work

Leadership exerts much influence over the future of a nation. Therefore, it is essential to establish godly leadership, not only in the families but in the different institutions, the community and the nation as a whole.

Promisedland Leadership Seminars are one-day intensive leadership training for pastors, workers and leaders, based on the Joshua Principles of servant-leadership, which discusses how to develop individuals into godly leaders, and release them into the society to be effective in their calling.

Godly character is essential for individuals that will use their gifts and abilities to impact their community. Leaders are encouraged to live out their faith in God, in servant-leadership in their homes and communities, rather than succumb to manipulative leadership without integrity, vision or compassion. This type of ungodly leadership has been responsible for many of the problems we see in the Nigerian communities today, where leaders are not held accountable for their actions, and have set ungodly examples for the next generation. True leadership, based on godly

principles, brings godly guidance and direction to the people.

Seminars are run at a host church, usually after the sunday service. This gives leaders of other churches in the community an opportunity to attend this non-denominational training.

Youth ministry leaders are free to attend.

During discussion period, we find application to some of the principles taught, followed by a question-and-answer period. We close the meeting with refreshments and prayers to bless the leaders in their chosen missions!

Marriage Seminars:

Strong families make a strong nation

Promisedland Marriage Seminars are multi-denominational marriage seminar for married couples and single adults based on Married for Life material.

Families are foundational to a stable community.

Marriages, therefore, are an important part of God’s plan for our nation. A strong marriage builds a strong family. Strong families make for viable community.

Viable communities make a strong nation.

By extension, children raised in strong, stable, loving homes are more likely to succeed in life.

The marriage seminars are run in a hosting church usually after the sunday service. This gives the all church leaders in the area an opportunity to attend.

Our teaching is based on the Married for life materials which shares thirteen biblical foundations of a godly marriage. Some of the topics covered are Covenant, One Flesh, Roles, Sowing and Reaping, Forgiveness, Faith Vision and Trust, Praying Together, Agreement, Flowing Together in the Spirit, Intimacy, Spiritual Warfare, Life patterns, One-Flesh Ministry.

Leaders are encouraged to live out their faith in God, in their homes and communities rather than succumb to traditional standards of marriage that do not line up with the word of God and breeds chaos in the homes. We also have a question and answer session. Refreshments are served afterwards.

Youth Seminars:

A God-given vision for a great future

The youth are the future of a nation. Therefore, it is essential to establish a godly direction for their lives, which in turn will determine the direction the nation will take in the future.

Promisedland Youth Seminars are visioncasting and life-skills seminars for youths and young adults in trade school, secondary school, college or university. They are held in a host church as a week-day evening event, right after school or work. Youths from other churches and the community are invited to attend.

The youth of Nigeria have largely been neglected and ignored. It would seem that their

futures have been mortgaged by the present elders and leaders of the nation. They face a devastated national economy that does not offer any job prospects. It has become urgent and necessary to bring hope to the youth, individually and collectively, and help them to chart a new course, where they would be equipped to implement their god given vision.

Promisedland aims to do this by teaching on god-given vision, and the assurance that God will bring that vision to pass. The hope of our youths is based on God’s ability and not on what current economic climate. Their personal relationship with

God should be given priority.

Promisedland runs seminars to help youths identify their individual gifts and talents, and how to develop those gifts through the various stages and seasons of life by doing the right things at the right time. The youth seminar helps the youth and young adults to find their true passion and achieve greatness through continuous service to the community, using their talents and skills.

Each seminar ends with a discussion session, followed by a question-and-answer period. Youth seminars close with refreshments and prayers to launch the attendees into a great future!

Seminars for Professionals:

Using skills and talents to create change

Promisedland supports professional development through seminars held in higher institutions and professional organisations, to facilitate the exchange and generation of sustainable ideas.

As professionals in different fields of study, we hope individuals will not just use their abilities to earn a living, but also use it to serve by volunteering in their community through coaching, teaching, mentoring and transfer of knowledge and skills.

Nigerian professionals living abroad are strongly encouraged to consider running seminars or other forums to share their expertise and

exchange ideas with their Nigerian counterparts whenever they visit Nigeria.

To date, Promisedland has held four seminars for applied arts students, teachers and design professionals to help raise professional practice to international standards. When possible, Promisedland makes donations of books collected from professionals abroad to the host institution for their school or association library.

Participants at Promisedland seminars are issued a certificate of attendance and encouraged to look for ways to use their gifts and abilities to serve and make an impact within their immediate communities.

Vision-casting Presentations:

Spreading the word to encourage others

Promisedland visual-presentations are a way of reaching out to Nigerians living abroad, to encourage them that they too can make a difference in their communities at home in Nigeria, as they are already doing abroad.

Promisedland presentations are targeted to Nigerians and Nigerian groups abroad, such as the Nigerians In Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), and other Nigerian associations and churches. We

organise events, or look for opportunities during events and anniversaries hosted by others to show slides of the work we are doing in Nigeria as an encouragement to others. Living abroad has exposed us to other ways of doing things, and we are able to bring practical solutions to impact our communities in Nigeria. Living abroad should not exempt us from participating in the rebuilding of Nigeria.

Bible Distribution:

Tools to create real change of hearts

Promisedland distributes leadership and training bibles to the pastors, workers and leaders, to help in their understanding of the word that they teach, especially in areas where Christian leaders cannot afford such bibles.

Bible distribution provides us an opportunity to cast a vision for a need to re-examine our lives against the standards found in the bible. We stress that believers should not be hearers of the word only, but be doers as well. The word requires that we hear the word, understand it, and then do it.

Learning to live by godly standards is not a suggestion, but an instruction.

By buying the bibles in Nigeria, we are able to cut down on shipping and put money directly into the local economy.

PROJECTS

School Supplies and Repairs:

Rebuild the youth, rebuild the nation

The schools in the rural communities in Nigeria don’t always have the supplies they need, to provide good education for the children.

Promisedland is trying to meet some of the needs of two school in Odeda Local Government Area, Ogun State.

In Odeda, the primary school needed exercise books for the kids, among many other things.

Through the connection with a local pastor, we were able to supply schools in the area with exercise books.

In the village of Opeji, the primary school building itself was broken down, with broken desks and a general lack of supplies for the children.

We were able to identify several important projects to get this school back on its feet. We have been able to finish repairs of the roofs of some of the school buildings; repaired broken desks, chairs and benches; and supplied new chairs for the younger children in the kindergarten section.

To get all this done, we relied on a local pastor that was willing to oversee the projects and send us regular updates of the progress of the projects.

Projects like this do not cost too much and we encourage other Nigerians at home and abroad, to look for opportunities like this, to make an impact on the future, our children.

The Remand Centre:

Every single Nigerian child is valuable

We keep our eyes open for opportunities that lend themselves to our participation, as we travel around Nigeria. One such opportunity is the Remand Centre near Abeokuta. We invited ourselves to ask questions about the centre, only to find that it is not just a remand centre, but a home to lost, abandoned and at-risk children.

We have gone back year after year to see what we could do to make life a little better for these children.

In the first year, we provided just a few board games and recreational supplies for the use of the children in the centre. The following year,

a Nigerian living abroad partnered with us and employed the services of a local welder to fix the broken beds, and install new springs into the bed frames.

During our third visit to the centre, we employed the services of painters to spruce up the their rooms with a fresh coat of paint.

We then replaced the old mattresses and pillows with brand new beddings, all for the comfort of the children.

If you look closely, you may find motherless babies, widows and elders in your community that you can adopt as a church.

Water Supply:

Providing clean water, one well at a time

As we travel around Nigeria, we see a lack of good water supply, not only in the cities but even more so in the villages and rural areas.

Many living in the cities have had to dig deep bore-holes to get clean water supply but it is an expensive venture for many living in rural areas and villages.

In the rural areas, people wash, bathe, drink and fish a single source that flow through several communities that use the water for the same things. It is no wonder that water-borne diseases are still rampant in Nigeria.

Promisedland is collaborating with an Opeji church to provide clean water for the community

by digging a new well. The church has been catering to their community by providing a birthing room for pregnant women and their new borns, who are unable to access government hospitals, with water drawn from a nearby river.

Its really encouraging to see a pastor that is taking care of the community in which his church is planted, and his willingness to oversee the construction of the project.

You too can help dig a well and sow into the lives of people in a community around you.

Let us pray 1. For the nation to be prepared for change.

Even with on-going mass evangelism and crusades that happened in the past, we find the many christians are not practicing what they preach. Many have not allowed the word of God to do the work of transformation that it was sent to do in their lives, families and communities. The church is the vehicle God will use to bring change to Nigeria. Pray that Christians will find practical ways to live out their faith on a daily basis. Pray that spiritual leaders will, by their actions, impart godly vision and passion to people living in their communities. Pray for opportunities for seminars and conferences where the practical aspects of life will be discussed, based on the word of God—marriage, leadership, finances, and raising children.

2. Our children, the future of Nigeria.

We often say the children are our future, yet we find many of the schools they attend are in a state of disrepair, and without adequate books and school supplies. At different levels of

education in Nigeria, many of the institutions find it difficult to operate at acceptable standards because of lack of supplies. Let us pray for new educational policies; teachers; improved funding; strategic partnerships; and globally acceptable standards that would allow our students to compete internationally.

3. Safety and security in the nation Pray for wisdom and strategies for the leaders in these departments so that they are clear on their goals and how to accomplish them.

Pray that they will receive all the training and equipments that they need to effectively protect the nation. Pray that police officers will be diligent in carrying out their duties. Pray for the salvation security agents. Take authority over darkness and the security of the nation.

Ask for revelation of the root cause of longstanding problems and break any curse operating in the situation. Pray that the enemy will be blocked and frustrated in all its efforts to shake Nigeria.

4. A new standard of living in the nation.

When we really start to get a hold of who our God is, and see him through nature, and all the things He has made, we see that He is an excellent God. The sun to give light in the day, and the moon and stars at night. He ordered the seasons and the tides; and the mountains are valley are beautiful. As God’s children, we can reflect His excellence in our environment.

There is no reason why our markets should be in such a filthy state, under the guise of poverty. We cannot use poverty as an excuse to live below acceptable standards. Pray that Nigerians would live a life of excellence, regardless of their financial status or level of education. Pray then, that Nigerian Christians would come to the realisation that, as the children of the most high, our environment must reflect God’s glory. Scripture encourages us that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called to his purposes. Pray that Nigerians will look at the future of Nigeria with renewed enthusiasm and hope.

6. Clean water for all Nigerians.

Some families find themselves washing bathing and drinking from the local stream. Our prayer is that every Nigerian family will have access to clean drinking water. Pray for clean and steady water supply; It is the right of all citizens of Nigeria. Pray that government will lgislate new laws that will make water supply a priority for every Nigerian community. Pray for a strategy and blue print for every community to receive clean water supply for everyday use. Pray for the eradication of waterborne diseases that plague our streams and rivers; water treatment programs and for the public to be properly educated about safe drinking water; wisdom to treat diseases like bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever and vector borne diseases like malaria, and respiratory diseases like meningococcal meningitis.

6. Nigeria: a blessed 50-year-old nation.

See how far Nigeria has come... What do we have to look forward to in the next 50 years?

Sometimes we get bogged down by our present circumstances, and are tempted to say that we have become stagnant or backward nation.

There’s no denying that we have gone through some really difficult changes that can be attributed to growing pains... And what country hasn’t? If you ask, most people would testify that the best lessons they learnt in life was through difficulties. We all learn from our past mistakes and grow into maturity, so why not Nigeria? Scripture encourages us that what the enemy meant for evil, God is able to turn it around for our good. Pray then for a turnaround of past misfortunes of the nation into renewed opportunities for a better future of Nigeria. Pray that our leaders and those in places of authority will be challenged to raise the standard of living in Nigeria. Scripture encourages us that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called to his purposes.Pray then that Nigerians will look

at the future of Nigeria with renewed hope and not despair. Again, scripture tells us that no eye has seen, and no mind can conceive what God has in store. Let us pray the that God will do above and beyond what we can ever hope, think or imagine concerning our nation Nigeria.

Finally, thank the Lord for his Lordship over the nation, that He who has begun a good word will surely bring it to completion in the name of Jesus.
