’m not here to complain or anything, but for me 2022 has been stressful with a capital S. Looking at all of the stories in this month’s magazine makes me seriously want to run away to a place where I can incorporate all of these things into my everyday life. Then I remember that I don’t have to run away, all of these things are right here in our wonderful home. Plus, I love my family and friends way too much to actually run away. So, I will just have to find a way to enjoy all of the fun, entertaining, and of course delicious things that Seguin has to offer one day at a time. I can picture the perfect warm March day. I try to convince as many people as possible to go do yoga with me, because I can’t imagine anything more fun than swinging from the rafters while getting some much needed stretching at the same time. Then, stop by one of the local shops for a delicious sweet treat loaded with fresh fruit. Any true Texan appreciates that summer comes early for us, and will take full advantage of that. Whatever it is that makes a perfect summer day for you, jeepin’, singin’, or diggin’ your toes in the sand at the volleyball court, I encourage you to do it as often as possible. Work hard, but play harder, Seguin.

An INSIDE look from our

WRITERS

“Visiting with Linda Elliot was quite the treat. Her stories of playing volleyball professionally and internationally are incredible. Watching her on the courts at Tiger Beach working with the next generation of beach volleyball athletes was amazing. They each followed her guidance and made adjustments to their technique making them better players. I can’t wait to see what more she has in store.” – Felicia Frazar “Being from Detroit, one might think I’m a “car” guy. That’s not the case. I use vehicles to get from point A to point B and care little about much else when it comes to automobiles. But that could all change (honestly, I doubt it will, me being who I am) after interviewing Danielle Meyers for this month’s Under the Hood. The way Meyers’ excitement showed on her face when discussing taking her Jeep Wrangler off road (nearly) sparked something in me to go “wheeling” on my own. Hopefully, her excitement for driving over big rocks comes across in the article and piques readers’ interests enough to have at least some of you look into 4x4 enjoyment.” – Dalondo Moultrie “Asking and answering questions while trying aerial yoga for the first time was made a breeze by Tiesha. She was patient when I needed to see a pose a second or third time and positively brimming with passion and praise for what she does. She works well with children, she has 6 herself, which is probably why we got along so well; I am a big kid at heart who loves to play on the swings (I discovered the silk ones are even more fun than the standard ones)! I am simply stoked to take my daughter, Azalea, to Tiesha’s Mom and Me class this coming Saturday. We are sure to share some smiles, silly faces, and laughs all while strengthening our bond and bodies.” – Bianca Rawlings

Wonderfully Made MOVEMENT GO BACK

Aerial yoga helps people of all ages strengthen and trust in their bodies Story by Bianca Rawlings Photos by Felicia Frazar

estled in charming Old Town Cibolo, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made offers an awe-inspiring total wellness experience that is sure to make anyone’s body and heart soar to new heights. Bring your wonderful self just as you are to the whimsical studio where inclusion and belonging along with “trust and love” are at the heart of what owner, Tiesha Bell Hartman aims to bring to each of her clients’ lives. She extends a warm welcome to guests of all ages and walks of life by creating a safe space in which the mind, body, and spirit can open and strengthened simultaneously. GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 11

Tiesha has known that empowering and helping others, especially children, was her calling since she was 10. She grew her business from the ground up, letting God lead her entrepreneurial endeavors, with the dream of enriching lives with her unique gifts. Her vision and determination are common denominators throughout her life. Tiesha was a single mother working her way through college to earn her Kinesiology and teaching degrees. Years later, she worked as a local physical education coach who developed her own Motor Learning Lab. Tiesha consistently digs deep to serve others and has the ability to clearly see the bigger picture. In her second year coaching at Cornerstone Christian schools, she said God told her “this is your last year here.” Though “it didn’t make any sense”at the time, since she was having her most successful professional year since starting her physical brain training program. However, she knew it was her purpose to do more for her community. Tiesha husband supports her and pushes her to reach her full potential. After seeing her first motor lab, he told her “this is for a lot of kids. A lot of kids need what you’re doing,” she recalled. After leaving her coaching position, she took the Motor Learning Lab mobile for a time and continued to engage and expand minds through activity. When she learned about aerial yoga from a friend, she realized it went perfectly with the goals of her Physical Brain Training program and Fearfully and Wonderfully Made was born. Tiesha’s 600-square-foot studio is a testament to her vision and faith. Tiesha could see the strong bones in the small, three-sided carport, which is original to the 1900’s-era house. She took on the transforming the structure with an open mind and heart, gaining gorgeous rescued pieces of tin roof and other finishing touches along the way. Tiesha says the studio fell into place more perfectly than she could have imagined and she commonly refers to it as “God’s Studio.” She shares 12 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

her strong faith in each of her classes, “starting each class with a prayer,” aiming to give her clients spiritual nourishment and providing them with the tools to believe in themselves and to fully trust the silks and reinforced power beams. During our interview, Tiesha gave me a quick lesson in the basics of aerial yoga. She made swinging, smiling, and chatting through the motions smooth and simple. Tiesha’s encouragement and excitement made it the most excellent fitness experience I have ever had. It was like yoga, meditation, and strength training all rolled into one fun package but better because of the aerial aspect and empowering atmosphere. Her clients rave about the experience as well, ranging from children as young as 3 who don’t want to stop swinging and playing in the silks to recovering marathon runners who swear by the pain relief, sense of community, and sleep benefits. Aerial yoga relieves stress in more ways than one such as increasing circulation throughout the body, decompressing the spine, and causing you to focus on your every movement, Tiesha said. Regular yoga “limits your movement due to the floor” and aerial yoga allows you to move freely due to the “increased range of motion,” she said. I was invited to trust the equipment and myself through the positions, which often felt like a gentle massage or getting a natural spinal alignment. After just a few minutes, I was able to defy gravity and even learned to let go once I found my center of balance. That sense of serene accomplishment and weightlessness stayed with me throughout the day. Whichever class you choose whether with Tiesha or one of her teachers who she lovingly calls “partner instructors,” you are certain to glide out of Fearfully and Wonderfully Made calmer and more grounded than when you walked in. Tiesha says she often hosts private parties and prefers the intimate studio setting so she can focus on safety and building relationships with her clients and community. 14 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

Sand HIT THE

A coach gives her all to players on the Volleyball courts of Seguin Story By Felicia Frazar

photos by Felicia Frazar & submissions from the community

Elliot continued to play, coach and officiate, when needed. “I would help build the program in every country I was at,” she said. While in Panama, Elliot earned the title of Most Valuable Player and was the Panamanian National Beach Champion. “I really just dove into everything. I was always mom and I was always attached to volleyball,” she said. “It was shift to learning the game from an international point of view.” Her skills on the sand earned her the status of a professional player. While she may not be listed in the history books under volleyball, Elliot carries with her a lifetime of memories and stories. “I’ve been able to play with lots of different people around the world and it’s been a blast,” she said. After Elliot’s return to the states in 2007, it took her a while to readjust to American culture and she took what she thought was a permanent break from volleyball. “I was in my 40s, I got to close out my career playing indoor and then also, I was still playing in the Italian semi-pro league; my Panamanian partner was the Olympic setter who I was playing with,” she said. “I came back, I was retired,

I was done. I left my career at such a high point, there was no reason to do anything but have fun with it.” People would ask Elliot to return to the sport as a coach, but she respectfully declined. That was until the NCAA started to include beach volleyball as a competition sport. Now, Elliot is helping instill a love for the sport while building up young athletes’ technical skills. “I am always telling anyone I coach with — whether it is the kids or adults — I’m going to hammer in technique to where you just can’t help yourself, be good with it,” she said. One of her athletes is nationally ranked in the Association of Volleyball Professionals under the age of 14, and another pair have placed second at the national contest. Makenna Heartless, 13, began her foray into volleyball with a stint in indoor and then moved to beach. She began taking lessons from Elliot at another facility and when the coach changed locations, so did Heartless. While learning how to play, Heartless said she’s learned other valuable skills that she uses off the court, including leadership and communication. “I feel like I’ve learned how to

inda Elliot has spent about four decades in the world of volleyball. She started as an indoor player in college at the University of Arizona and made the move to a beach player and coach — nationally and internationally — throughout those 40 years. Her work eventually landed her the role as the Tiger Beach Volleyball program director, where she is not only teaching children the ins and outs of the game, but helping to grow the recreational aspect of a lifetime sport. “I’ve really been a part of the growth for the game,” she said. “Early on in the ’80s, I was recognized as one of the top 10 leaders of building the grassroots of the program.” Elliot got her first look at beach volleyball as a full-ride, starter for the Lady Wildcats’ volleyball team. Her coach would have the squad practice in the sand, Elliot said. After graduating college, Elliot continued to play and coached at Long Wood University in Virginia Commonwealth before the military shipped her family overseas. “We moved and I lived in Panama, Japan, Italy and Greece,” she said. “From basically 1989 onward, my game was all international.”

communicate a lot more with people because, unlike other sports, you only have one person on the court with you, so you have to really have a connection and bond with those people,” she said. Reese Hickingbottom, 14, also got started in the indoor setting. Much like Heartless, Hickingbottom switched to beach. She’s only been playing for a year, and she credits Elliot’s coaching style with making her a better player. “I jumped to Linda and in about two months I was ready for nationals and I ended up placing second in the silver bracket with Avery,” she said. “It is tough. She works us hard and she is hard on us, but it is all out of love.” Indoor and beach volleyball are fundamentally the same, however, they are played differently. “It is a different sport,” Elliot said. “The beach athlete has to be an all-around player. They can’t be a position player. You have to be a wellrounded athlete, you have to be able to have all skills available to you.” Beach volleyball is also a game of partnership, as opposed to a team of six on the court and subs on the bench. “The mental and emotional commitment in the moment is a little bit higher because you are only accountable to one person and you can’t hide behind others,” she said. Taking on all of the roles helps create a stronger sense of responsibility, Hickingbottom said. “You have to look inside to see where the problem is,” she said. “It is self critical. You are everything, passer, setter, hitter, blocker.” In addition to guiding the younger athletes, Elliot is working on assisting adults with building skills on the recreational side. “Right now we’re just growing the national program while having the foundation for the juniors, providing the opportunity for kids who want to play in college while at the same time also making sure we grow the recreational side of the house,” she said. “The thing I love about being at Tiger is their heart is in the recreation side of the house and a sport of a lifetime.” 18 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

enise Durban has three cats. One is a stray found at a local manufacturing plant, the second wandered up to her home in the country, and the third, he’s a-whole-nother story. Dabney Baldwin Durban is a Donskoy, a Russian hairless cat. He came to her by way of a friend, who originally purchased the feline from an Austin-based breeder. “A friend actually got him from the breeder, but her dog wanted to eat him up,” Denise said. “She offered me the cat, and I jumped at it. I’ve always wanted one.” At just four months old, 4-pound Dabney went home with Denise and she welcomed him into her family. Introducing him to his new furry cat brothers — Blaze and Noodle. Denise Durban shares her love for her unique Feline Friend

The Donskoy cat has a mutated gene that causes hairlessness, which is a dominant trait. Like his furry counterparts, Dabney does grow some hair, but it falls out just as fast. “Some of the cat organizations don’t consider him a true sphynx because he can grow hair and lose it again,” Denise said. “His dam and sire are both Russian.” She jokes that her cat looks like a creature from out of this world. “He is my alien,” she said. “He is nicknamed ‘Naked Alien Chicken Rat Cat.’” As a young cat, he is full of energy jumping to and from high surfaces, and is highly inquisitive. “He is super active,” Denise said. “He is not a typical cat. He will come to you when he is called, the other two will just look at you.” Caring for a hairless cat is constant work. Dabney gets bathed or wiped down at least once a week and his ears and eyes cleaned almost daily. He tends to get oily patches, and has skin problems. He also needs help regulating his body temperature since he is missing his everyday attire. To give him a hand and to help keep him from getting sunburned, Denise dresses the 1-year-old feline. “He needs clothes, he has no fur,” she said. “He fights me a little bit when I go to put it on, but once I’ve got it on, it doesn’t bother him. He loves it. My other cats, I put a shirt on them and they fall over.” Among the items in his wardrobe are t-shirts, pajamas, a Harry Potter hoodie and a red “Star Trek” uniform, similar to Capt. Jean Luc Pickard’s. “I took a photo of Dabney in his Star Trek shirt and tagged Sir Patrick Stewart,” she said. When she takes him on outings, he becomes the center of attention, Denise said. People will stop and talk to her and him. He even got his picture taken with Santa this year. “He did really good with Santa,” she said, adding he is still learning to walk on a leash. Dabney enjoys the attention. Denise documents Dabney’s adventures and the people he meets each Saturday in honor of Caterdays. 22 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

eddings can be momentous. They are most certainly life changing. But for a local man, one wedding changed his life and he wasn’t even the groom. A few years ago, Gabe Galvan of Seguin served as best man at his friend’s wedding and sang a song for the happy couple. What happened next has put him on a path he hadn’t foreseen prior to the wedding. “Someone from the (Seguin) Silver Center was there and they hinted that I should go talk to Glenda Layton — who is in charge of the Silver Center — to get on their Silver Opry, which is their showcase country music show,” Galvan said. “She gave me the chance to sing on that Silver Opry. That’s how I met my band; they played as the house band for the Silver Center Opry.” Galvan began playing guitar about six years ago and started doing some singing around that time. But it wasn’t until he booked the Silver Opry that he

began taking things seriously and doing shows regularly. He credits Layton with giving him the break that sent him on his way doing shows and performing with a band in front of live audiences. Previously, he had sung with his high school choir but nothing like the Silver Opry. And, according to Galvan and Layton, she booked him without even a proper audition. After someone sent Galvan to Layton to ask for a spot on the bill, she said the conversation went something like this. “He came in and he said ‘I’d like to play at your Opry,’” Layton said. Layton: Well, can you sing? Galvan: Yes, ma’am, I can. Layton: Do you have anything I can hear? Galvan: No, ma’am. I just sing in church. Layton: “Well sing me something.” Galvan sang a cappella and impressed Layton, she said. “I was just kind of giggling and messing with him to make sure,” Layton

said. “The whole world thinks they can sing but he’s got a beautiful voice.” Galvan primarily sings traditional country music. He sings some original songs but mostly covers artists like George Strait and Randy Travis. He and his band perform together around the region. They play together in the Silver Center’s Crystal Chandelier Ballroom, at Freiheit Country Store in New Braunfels and mostly at The Den in La Vernia, 27-year-old Galvan said. Mostly what they play, some might call country dance music, he said. Their audiences are comprised of lots of two-steppers, Galvan said. He’s writing songs and plans to put out an album some time this year. The sky is the limit for young Galvan and he hopes his talents continue to take him up. His goal is to someday make a living at performing, no matter how meager that living is, and also tour as a country singer, Galvan said. “I don’t want to dream too big,” he said. “Right now, I want to try to be practical and step by step. I know it’s a grind. “But for a small portion of my life, I’d like to make a living doing it, maybe not a great living but just to be able to say I did it and experience it.” That’s a far stretch from not so long ago when he first played at the Silver Center and nerves nearly got the best of him. “I was a nervous wreck,” Galvan said. “I botched one or two of the songs horribly.” He thanks Layton for having faith in him and sticking with him She, in turn, said she’s “happy to have helped.” She and others have noticed Galvan’s confidence grow as he improves on his craft, Layton said. There may be obstacles but Layton knows Galvan has the talent to make his own wishes come true. “He’s just blossomed in his ability to pursue this trade, his dream of being a country music singer,” Layton said. “I think he can go really far. There’s just lots of things that are not simple to do from Seguin, Texas.” Simple or not Galvan plans to sing his heart out in pursuit of his goals. 26 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

ICE CREAM the inside scoop on the best cold treats in seguin Story by bianca Rawlings Photos by Felicia Frazar

C

heck out these cool and creative treats and eats in Seguin. Savor the Texas sun and slow down your day with a snow cone, smoothie, or scoop of homemade ice cream. Any one of these spot’s fantastic frosty fare is sure to make you smile and melt in euphoria.

La Playa Pop Shop 1306 N. Guadalupe Street This ice cream and pop shop may be new to town, but the careful method of creating cool treats by hand is one that owner Alejandro Guerro, has had in his family for generations. His shop boasts a bountiful selection of handcrafted paletas, ice creams, sorbets, sundaes, and more on the way; he plans to serve horchata, snow cones, and other chilly treats once his new bar is completed in April. With a colossal amount of flavors, more than any other shop we visited at 28 ice creams and 14 popsicles, let me leave you with a few recommendations. The mango sorbet was magnificent, the strawberry paletas were almost too perfect to eat, and the Ferrero Rocher ice cream is a fan-favorite.

Snow Mountain

Andy’s Ice Cream & Snacks 706 S. Austin St. Come by for a sweet scoop or two and stay for the spicy, slightly messy, chip and cheese creations. His shop has many snacks that are sure to spice up your day, including elote and Takis, and if you need to cool off afterward just grab one of the many flavors of sundaes served or an ice cold Mangonada to chill out. Andy’s shop is right next to the Valdez Barber Shop, if you need to grab a quick trim while you sip your creamy creation, I’m sure they won’t mind, that is if you bring some to share. Good thing the horchatas and agua frescas are available in extra large sizes. GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 31

2120 N. Austin St. These snow cones are truly customizable and come in enough flavors to make your head swirl. They offer many mix-ins, toppings, and also serve ice cream, coffee, and snacks. Test out flavor combinations in a small, medium, or large size and then spring for the Mt. Everest size once you have found your signature Snow Mountain combo. Though beware the brain freeze that can come with eating your icy treat too fast; this mountain is one best climbed slowly, steadily, and with a few friends.

Gypsy Scoops 110 S. Austin St. Location is everything at this sweet spot in downtown Seguin. Situated along the square inside the Traveling Gypsy Antiques, the family-owned business is a local favorite and owners Ana and Armando Nieto are familiar, friendly faces around town. It is easy to grab a scoop or two of their ice cream, which is made in San Antonio by Justin’s Ice Cream, and take it to go or just chill at their handmade bar, which was crafted by owner Armando out of beautiful copper, and get lost in good conversation. The shop also sells coffee, moon pies, sodas, floats, chips, candies, and more. The vanilla ice cream cone is a crowd pleaser and got a 10 out of 10 yumminess score from my official 5-year-old ice cream connoisseur.

S no K ing II 820 E. Kingsbury St. Located next to the Quickie Bee’s, the treat trailer is the perfect place to go for a speedily-made snow cone. Friendly and fast, this snow cone spot is a must for cooling off on a hot Texas day. Grab some gas, drinks, and an icy cold treat all in one swift stop at this sweet snow cone location. With multiple locations throughout Seguin, there is sure to be a SnoKing near you!

Fruit - Tisimos 769 W. Court St. Homemade ice creams, agua frescas, smoothies, snow cones, freshly sliced fruit, and baked goods are just a few of the delicious treats offered at this small shop. The owner, Guadalupe Aguilar, learned the art of making ice cream in Miami and loves to experiment with new flavors. The kids will love their topping selection and the adults will love the boozy Pina Colada and Coffee ice cream. Guadalupe also owns a bakery in town, the Sweet Stop, and brings fresh cookies and other treats over to Fruit - Tisimos because what goes better with ice cream than crunchy cookies!

Taqueria and Juicy Fruits 480 S. State Highway 123 Hungry for more than just ice cream and snow cones? Then try out this cozy restaurant near Walmart for lunch or dinner and dessert. They have Blue Bell ice cream, mangonadas, frescas con crema, fruit cups, shakes, and much more. So order one of their signature dishes such as the mini tacos or ensalada, but make sure to save room for dessert.

Prickly Pear

T

ooling around in her diesel-guzzling Dodge Ram 3500 Mega Cab began to hurt her pocketbook so Seguin resident Danielle Meyers decided she wanted something different. Once she cruised the market, nothing really caught her eye for a while, but then she saw it. The 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sahara JKU had to be hers, even if the gas mileage wasn’t much better. “All I liked was the Jeep,” Meyers said. Turns out, it was a good buy. Meyers calls the SUV the Prickly Pear because it is the color of a cactus flower. Over the last year or so, she has taken a keen liking to the Jeep and its capabilities. One of her favorite things now, Meyers said, is taking the mid-size sport utility vehicle off road. Her face lights up when she talks about “wheeling.” “You literally just go on some ranch somewhere and drive over big things or trails,” Meyers said. GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 35

Story by dalondo Moultrie Photos by Felicia Frazar

To keep up with her wheeling and keep the Jeep up to par for the roads and off roads, Meyers performs a majority of the vehicle’s upkeep herself. In the nearly 18 months Meyers has owned “her,” the Seguinite has performed several upgrade and maintenance jobs on the Jeep. She changed the thermostat and repaired a malfunction in which one headlight shone bright while the other was normal. The headlight issue baffled her for a bit but she did what any good tech does: She turned it off and then on again, basically. “One headlight was low beam, the other was high-beam,” Meyers said. “I just unplugged the headlights and it was fixed.” When it comes to maintenance, Meyers said she does “pretty much anything” that doesn’t deal with computers or electronics under the hood. She recently installed a 3.5-inch lift kit that she pieced together to give Prickly Pear’s suspension a boost. It allows her to cover more ground and scale over larger objects while off-roading But of all the upgrades, she is most pleased with the job she did in one particular area. “My proudest accomplishment is I gutted the entire sound system and upgraded it,” Meyers said. She installed an aftermarket head unit and a five-channel amplifier. She mounted tweeters on corners above the dashboard and affixed a sound bar on the ceiling of the vehicle between the front and rear seats. Meyers built a subwoofer box that includes a subwoofer to exquisitely accompany the amp and match its ranges, she said. “The inside of the box is specific to this sub and it is perfect,” Meyers said. For several months, Meyers — who is a member of the Canyon Lake Fire Department — kept herself extra busy working her way through paramedic school. After graduating and getting her license for that, she felt a trip was in order. She took a Valentine’s Day excursion to Big Bend, a place where the Prickley Pear cactus grows wildly, for a little relaxation. And of course she planned to get in some prime wheeling. 36 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
