An INSIDE look from our

WRITERS

“Having worked in Seguin the past couple years, I’ve had opportunities to venture out a bit and check out some of the great amenities right here in our own backyard. Each time I visit Starcke Park, I’m struck by some other aspect of its beauty and greatness. However, I never knew its storied history but writing this month’s article on the historic open space provided terrific backdrop to the gem that is a joy for so many and located just minutes from Downtown Seguin.” – Dalondo Moultrie

“I’ve played bingo as fundraisers and in school, but I quickly learned there is so much more to it while watching Jackie Schlicting play at the Geronimo Community Center. It is a game of chance, with hopes of winning cash prizes. But the bingo hall was a place where friendships are formed and cherished and the game is where the bond begins. It was fun to watch the dynamic between friends as they gathered before the games started and talked about previous days or time way.” – Felicia Frazar

“As a fan of truly classic cuisine, I’m also a sucker for weird recipes. I find that most bizarre flavor combinations in recommended recipes make perfect sense upon mouth entry. Keep an open mind, expand that palate, and have fun with food. It’s the only thing you need every day. Might as well mix it up. DON’T FEAR THE GREEN PANCAKES.” – Michael Pape

FROM THE

Editor

I

n my monthly letters to you, I oft discuss trying new things, stepping outside of the proverbial box, and finding inspiration to do things that bring you joy. I’m guilty of only occasionally following my own advice, as it’s rare that I find myself free from desk, or home, especially while still trying to be safe and healthy. Due to necessity, I was able to take on some new roles that took me comfortably outside of my comfort zone. My first new role has me hands-on with our quarterly fashion feature, in which I took advice from major fashion gurus about what’s in style for spring and early summer. Aside from the repeated theme of trying new things, as mentioned in this letter, you might notice quite a bit of blue. Blueberries, pops of blue among the golf clothing in fashion, and the blue skies above in this stillnot-deathly-hot season. Nothing depressing about this blue period, just individual happinesses I wanted to share. I’m grateful to be given the chance to spread my wings a bit, and am hopeful you’ll take inspiration in it to try some new fashion choices and sneak some creamy green veggies in your breakfast recipes.

History

Max Starcke PArk Story By Dalondo Moultrie

G

eneration after generation of residents and visitors of Seguin have enjoyed one of the city’s treasured jewels for more than eight decades and the fun still has no end in sight. Max Starcke Park is a

longtime gathering spot for residents, their guests and tourists, according to an application the city filed for recognition of the park as a Lone Star Legacy Park. The history lives in the minds of today’s residents, guests and tourists as well, said Jack Jones, Seguin’s parks director.

“A lot of people remember when the pool was built here in ’39,” he said. “A lot of memories are of the pool here at Starcke Park West. Of course, the golf course, you had volleyball, you had the canoe launch for river access. They had shuffleboard down here. We still have some of those markings today.” Amenities at Starcke Park abound. During cool fall evenings or blazing hot, lazy summer afternoons, people find no loss of things to do at the park.

Jones’s office is in the park so he sees people show love to the open space and all it has to offer. “You see people just cruising through here, checking out the bowl waterfall. … A lot of people go down there just to see the waterfall,” Jones said. “They like to drive along River Road back there just to look at the river. They have those old picnic tables done back in 1939 along the river. They’re still there. There are some over by my parks office, there are some picnic tables there as well

built in the ’30s.” As the country and the world eased their way out of the Great Depression, the United States Congress, following the lead of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, passed a bill to increase public construction and, in turn, create work for the nation. Directly after the bill’s passage, Seguin leadership planned a recreational center for residents to enjoy and that would serve as an attraction for visitors. They decided on 43 acres of land

along the Guadalupe River just south of downtown Seguin is the right spot. Famed architect Robert H.H. Hugman was chosen to design the park. Hugman is famous for his work as designer and architect of the San Antonio River Walk. From conception through planning and construction of the park, Maximilian Hugo Starcke served as mayor of Seguin and threw his support behind the placement of the city’s jewel. Max Starcke, as he was more commonly known, is the man for whom Starcke Park is named. He was a sort of a renaissance man, his great nephew Hilmar Starcke III said. “He was the oldest of six children,” Hilmar said. “Max did a lot of stuff. He was cashier at the Seguin State Bank; I’m not even sure if that was the name of the bank at the time. He went to work for [Lower Colorado River Authority]. That’s why the dam at Marble Falls is called the Max Starcke Dam.” Hilmar Starcke is involved in the family’s business, Starcke Furniture Company. His grandfather was Max Starcke’s younger brother Hilmar Starcke Sr., the second child born to Hugo and Ida Starcke. Max and Hilmar Sr. were instrumental in establishment of Walnut Springs Park in downtown Seguin, the younger Hilmar said. Hilmar III doesn’t have many GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 13

personal memories of his great uncle who has a giant park named after him. But Max Starcke is a historical figure talked about in the family, Hilmar III said. “I don’t remember him very well,” he said. “I must’ve had conversations with him when I was a child. He was around.” Since inception, Starcke Park has grown to encompass 227 acres and includes an 18-hole golf course, disc golf, baseball fields, restrooms, a wave pool, a dog park and much more. At the time of his application for Lone Star Legacy Park status in 2018, Jones wrote that Max Starcke Park had an annul average attendance of more than 150,000. Starcke Park has blossomed and evolved over the years from being racially segregated at the time of its opening to offering fun for everyone today. “Max Starcke Park opened during the days of segregation and was originally considered a white only park,” according to the 2018 application. “When the park was constructed, separate pools and playgrounds were also constructed for the Hispanic and African American populations in other parts of town.” That changed in the 1950s, Jones wrote. The separate pools and playgrounds closed and minorities started visiting Starcke Park, he said.

ackie Schlichting sits at a six-foot table on the right side of the Geronimo Community Center patiently waiting. The ball B6 shows on the two TV screens as the bingo caller pulls it up from the machine and places it in front of a web camera. After about 30 seconds, she calls out the number “B6.” Schlichting, along with a host of about 45 people, search their bingo cards for the number and use a dabber to mark it out. The avid bingo player visits the Geronimo Community Center for bingo each night it’s open Monday, Friday and Sunday hoping to walk away with a little cash, all while supporting Seguin Youth Services. “I’ve been coming here since it opened,” Schlichting said. “I like the fact that Sheryl’s (Sachtleben) money all goes to her charity. We see what she does for the kids. She posts what she 16 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

does with the kids.” Sachtleben is the executive director of Seguin Youth Services. She started the bingo games years ago to help the nonprofit and now players flock to the community center several times a week. Schlichting isn’t alone in her thrice weekly trips to play bingo. She’s joined by other frequent players, some of whom she calls friends, who all show up a couple of hours early just to chat and grab a bite to eat before the games begin. “We just have a good time here,” she said. And when one is missing, the others take note. This was evident as Schlichting retold the results of her own absence from a recent evening of bingo fun. “I did not come one day and I got a text from Sheryl asking if I was sick,” Schlichting said. “We’re always here.” For about 30 years, Schlichting has ventured to bingo halls. She got

hooked after a friend introduced her to the game. She even plans annual treks to play in other states. “It is a lot of fun,” she said. “I’m getting ready to play bingo in Oklahoma up at Winstar. My girlfriend and I drive up there in May and in July for her birthday and for mine and play bingo all weekend. My daughter and I are going to go.” As she waits for the Monday games to start, Schlichting grabs a pink bingo dabber from the host of colored markers set out in front of her and starts preparing the cards for the final game — blackout. Schlichting begins dabbing out the even colors as she explains that the free spaces for that particular game are dictated by the date, and since it is an even day, even numbers are free. Schlichting explained some of the appeal. There are 10 pages in a book of bingo cards for the 10 regular games.

here’s no need for the uninspired, “par for the course” golf clothes of the past, or even the pretentious attire of the low handicappers. Today’s golf apparel is all about comfort factor, fabrics built for performance, and adaptability on the greens. Clothing isn’t bound to just club-swinging and clubhouse lounging, but attire you can take with you into the world awaiting conquering. The archaic wear of yesteryear looks nice in sepiatoned photos, but those rules of stodge no longer need to be followed. Some of the most influential design put forth in the past is playing an important role in the looks of this season. You’ll see brighter colors, outstanding patterns, and fabric from intelligent design. A bridge is being built between course-wear and your daily driver outfit, with brands focusing on appealing to a younger demographic that demands the best of all worlds. Add a pop of blue to your monochrome attire to update your go-to outfits. The beauty behind this trend is the unlimited amount of options you can try throughout the season. When styling these items, opt for all black or grey outfits. The bright hue will stand out amongst the deeper shades. Mix and match your accessories and discover a new favorite way to rock your key pieces.

Carnes’ 1931 Ford Model A Story and photos by Felicia Frazar

hen driving a motorcycle became a challenge for Terry Lee Carnes, he made a swap for a classic car, literally. Carnes traded his motorcycle for a 1931 Ford Model A. He got the modified five-window coupe from a man in Waco and has done little work to it since, only making small adjustments including swapping out the tires for white walls and adding two four-barrel carburetors. The Model A sports a small block Chevy, automatic transmission, Ford rear end, speedway front end suspension, disc brakes in the front, and drum brakes in the rear. “It’s not fast, but it will start flying at 70, like actually coming off the ground,” he said. “The whole car weighs about 1,700 pounds. Over 70, the whole car comes off the ground. You can see the front tires dangling; 50 and slower does fine.” The roof was cropped about 5 inches leaving little room for comfort. The exposed engine shows all of the work, and some of the quirky features, including an old Falstaff beer can that serves as the antifreeze overflow. Carnes enjoys cruising the streets in the coupe. “It’s cool to ride in being so low,” he said. “You pull up to an F250 and you can’t even see the person in it because

they’re a good 10 inches or more than that above you. It is fun a ride.” The Model A has also earned a few second- and third-place awards at car shows. “Usually I lose against guys who have $100,000 cars,” Carnes said. Carnes has aspirations of making some adjustments, but says only time will tell when or if he can make them.

Blueberry & Avocado P a n c a k e s Story and photo by michael pape

“Ew, not avocado, that’s not a breakfast food. Terrible idea! I’m afraid of the color green!”

Don’t listen to the above person, they need to stretch their palate. The majority of pancakes have a somewhat boring composition, a simple dish made all the better by the thick sugar spread atop. Even most pancake mixes have little to no sugar in them; the sweetness comes from the syrup drowning our delicious disks. This avocado recipe won’t sweeten your cakes, but it will add a rich umami flavor to your savory breakfast flats. You’ll find they have a creamier bite that you might be more willing to

enjoy without an extra drizzle of sticky fork glue. If avocado is good enough for my hipster toast, it’s definitely good enough as a secret pancake ingredient.

-1 cupIngredients oat flour 1 1/2 tbsp fine sugar 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp baking soda Pinch of salt 1 ripe medium avocado, mashed 3/4 cup buttermilk 1 egg 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 cup blueberries Coconut oil, to fry Maple syrup, to serve

Don’t be afraid of the power of avocado in your pancakes. One word:

In a food processor, add the mashed avocado, buttermilk, egg and vanilla, and process until smooth. Add the avocado mixture to the flour mixture and stir until just combined. Place a bit of coconut oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Once melted and hot, scoop batter into the pan, dot each pancake with a small handful of blueberries and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown. Serve with maple syrup. I snuck a poached egg on top of the pancakes. Did you notice? I’m sure you’re already poaching in anticipation of the combined flavors. Good eye.
