Niagara Cares, Feed the Children Bring Relief to 400 Seguin Families

(Seguin) -- Hundreds of Seguin families recently filed into the city of Seguin Softball 4-Plex on Nelda Street for some muchneeded support. The largescale effort was part of a nationwide “Resource Rally” coordinated by Niagara Cares, the charitable arm of Niagara Bottling. The event was held in partnership with the non-profit group Feed the Children, the city of Seguin, and the Seguin ISD.

The Resource Rally brought together dozens of Niagara Bottling employees and city volunteers, who spent a portion of last week handing out supplies to 400 local families. Each kit was designed to support a family of four. The kits included boxes of food, name-brand cosmetics, personal hygiene products, toys, and bottled water.

Chet Jones, Feed the Children’s director for corporate partners, says these food distributions are made possible through ongoing collaborations with businesses that want to make a difference in their local communities.

“Companies like to engage their employees and there’s nothing better than first hand watching the families. So what Niagara did, we targeted certain plant locations across the nation because Niagara has fifty-five plants. So we did this last year, we did fifteen events at fifteen plants and word got around and everybody wanted to do it. So this year we are doing twenty in different locations across the country from Niagara, pg. 3

Early Voting Continues in Guadalupe County Ahead of Nov. 4 Election

(Seguin) -- Early voting for the Nov. 4 election date continues this week. As of Monday morning, 4,632 voters have already taken advantage of the early voting period, which continues through this Friday.

Early voting is underway at eight locations across the county, including the newly opened Guadalupe County Elections Office located at 3251 N. State Highway 123. This facility replaces the former office and will for the first time serve as the official site for both early voting and Election Day voting.

Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says the remaining 7 early voting sites – as usual -- are located all across the county.

“We have Texas State Technical College in New Braunfels. We’ve got the Cibolo Fire Station Number Two in Cibolo, Redemptive Grace Ministries in New Braunfels, (and) Christ Lutheran Church out near New Berlin on Church Road. We have the elections office annex - that office has opened back up (in Schertz). We have Marion ISD Tondre Room and Seguin ISD Admin Building. So we’ve got quite a few locations for voters to vote early. Any of our registered voters can vote at any of the early voting locations. Their hours are all the same, so you don’t have to worry about which one is open and which one isn’t,” said Hayes.

Elections officials say voters will see 17 proposed

amendments to the Texas Constitution on every ballot.

Those state constitutional amendments include the creation of a fund that could have big benefits to Seguin and Guadalupe County.

Proposition 1 will create a permanent source of funding for Texas State Technical College projects. That would include the building of a new TSTC campus in Seguin, that’s already in the works.

In addition to the state constitutional amendments on every ballot, there will be additional local races on the ballot, depending on where you live.

Local ballot items include a $60 million bond election in the Marion ISD. The bond issue is being proposed for a new elementary school, land for future facilities and/or campus and new school buses.

There are also several water district elections on ballots in Guadalupe County.

Elections officials say to avoid delays, voters are reminded to bring an acceptable form of photo ID and to review sample ballots ahead of time. Sample ballots, early voting schedules, and polling location details can be found online at co.guadalupe.tx.us or by visiting the Elections Office in Seguin.

Early voting continues this week with hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Election Day is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4.

I-10 Lane Closures Continue This Week in Seguin

(Seguin) -- Heads up, Seguin -- TxDOT contractors are continuing work along Interstate 10 this week, with some overnight construction expected to slow traffic through parts of the city.

According to TxDOT, alternating lane closures are planned on both the eastbound and westbound main lanes of I-10 each night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday, Oct. 27 through Friday, Oct. 31. The closures will occur between FM 464 and State Highway 123 as crews continue contractor work in the area.

Officials say the nighttime schedule is designed to minimize impacts on daytime traffic, and no detours will be required. Drivers are encouraged to use caution, watch for lane shifts and workers, and allow extra travel time through the construction zone.

New York to California wherever Niagara has a plant,” said Jones.

Jones says the program focuses on partnering with cities and organizations that are “closely connected to residents in need.”

“We come out here and invite four hundred families - sometimes eight hundred families - and we have the Niagara employees join us, along with the city and the mayors come out and it’s just a beautiful event. We give away around one-hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth of food and resources to identified families, and it’s usually around four hundred families that we identify,” said Jones.

Before the event, Jeff Houghtling, systems and warehouse manager at Niagara Bottling in Seguin, said that the event was a meaningful way for Niagara to give back to the community where its team members live, work and play.

“Not only do we take pride in helping out the community as well, but I thank the group of people we have working for us as well. Either half of them come from that live in Seguin, or especially come from San Antonio, right? I’ve been with Niagara ten years and every day it’s an adventure. We love to help out the community. Not only do we help out with Feed the Children, of course, but Kerrville. The city, every time you guys come calling you guys help us out as well. But let’s take the

opportunity to get these cars rolling here, and it’s a great opportunity for the family,” said Houghtling.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Jack Lee also expressed gratitude to Niagara Cares and Feed the Children, noting that many of the district’s students come from households that will benefit from the donated goods.

“I get to represent, today, about 7,300 students (and) over a thousand staff members that work hard every single day to make sure our students have exactly what they need in the classroom. But what they need often, and that we see every day as educators are the things that really make a difference - food, shelter, clothing - the things we don’t always get to provide as a school district every single day. So today as volunteers I want to say thank you. Thank you to Niagara Cares, to Feed the Children, to the city of Seguin, but it means the world to the people that are going to be coming through this line. And that’s very powerful, incredibly powerful for

them and incredibly powerful for our community. So on behalf of Seguin ISD students I just want to say thank you. As Mayor (Donna) Dodgen pointed out, Seguin’s poverty rate for the city is about fifteen percent. For Seguin ISD, we’re closer to about eighty percent of our students are economically disadvantaged and struggle in some way. So, this is very meaningful for them and for the families you are going to see today. So, thank you very very much for all that you do,” said Lee.

Seguin is among a handful of Texas cities along with Dallas and Houston who will have hosted a food distribtuion. Jones says Feed the Children has worked especially hard to assist communities across the state affected by natural disasters over the past year.

Tuesday’s event marked the 15th stop in this year’s Niagara-Feed the Children partnership tour. So far, the nationwide effort has helped approximately 22,000 children and their families.

Luedke

Maxine Skotnik Luedke passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025 in Seguin, Texas due to complications from dementia. She was 93 years old. She was born in West Columbia, Brazoria County, on August 9, 1932 to Joe Will Skotnik and Malinda Dora Mazek.

She was the next to youngest of six children: four girls and two boys.

She was just a few days old when an unnamed Hurricane hit Freeport and she spent the night under a mattress with her mother for safety in their small wood frame house.

Growing up she was a tom-boy spending her time outside climbing trees and playing with her brothers. She was called “Cotton Top” by her family members because of the blonde hair she had as a young girl. As an adult, her family nickname was “Mackie”.

After graduating high school, she moved to Taft to live with one of her sisters and her husband. Shortly after, she started working at the local Dodge Car Dealership in Sinton and later on worked at the Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Sinton.

In 1952, she met the love of her life, Leonard John (L.J.) Luedke, who was working for the federal government in Sinton and they were wed on August 15, 1953. They had two sons, Jeffery and Mark. They were wed for almost 62 years until L.J. died in 2015.

What’s called tech neck is a strain when someone holds their head forward for long periods of time to look at their phone. There’s new findings in the International Journal of Environmental Sciences that say spinal and other problems are associated with heavy smartphone use among college-aged people. In an article published this month in the European Spine Journal, researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago wrote If something isn’t done, people will develop early-onset spinal degeneration and other issues that could last a lifetime.

Dietician Recommends Adding Pumpkin To Meals

(New York, NY) -- With Halloween around the corner, a dietitian is offering some tips on incorporating pumpkin into the diet. Taylor Stein at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York says pumpkins are a squash that’s high in a substance that the body converts into vitamin A, which is essential to immune system health. She says one can easily blend canned pumpkin into soups, dips, and sauces and it can be a healthy substitute for ingredients in baking recipes, such as heavy cream.
