(Seguin) -- The name may already be familiar to many in the Seguin ISD community -- but this time, it belongs to someone new.
On Tuesday, the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees named Dr. Jack Lee as the lone finalist for superintendent of schools. The announcement will for sure draw double takes from longtime community members who remember another Jack Lee -- the late educator who for years served generations of Seguin students.
Nonetheless, this Jack Lee is the result of a two-month search for the district’s next leader.
Since 2019, Dr. Lee has served as superintendent of Bullard ISD. The 4A district, located south of Tyler, serves approximately 2,900 students.
Dr. Lee says he is excited about making the move to the Seguin ISD and is ready to
develop a plan for the school district’s future.
“I think the biggest thing I want people to know; is I am all about positivity. I’m all about high expectations, and I’m about making sure we’re doing what’s best for kids and if we can do all three of those things at the same time, then we’re going to have a school system that is top notch, competitive anywhere else, if not the best across the state,” said Dr. Lee.
In his time at Bullard ISD, Dr. Lee oversaw significant district improvements, including a jump to an “A” academic rating from the Texas Education Agency. He is also credited with implementing a districtwide curriculum overhaul, launching a mental health support system for students, and passing a $103 million bond to fund new facilities.

(Seguin) -- The naming of a lone finalist for the Seguin ISD has unfolded yet into another tale – a tale of two Jack Lees. That’s because Dr. Jack Lee, an experienced educator from Tyler, Texas will soon lead the district where his name already adorns the front of the district’s professional learning center -- adjacent to the Seguin ISD Administration Building at Oak Park Mall. The Jack Lee Administration Building, was renamed last year in April in honor of another Jack Lee who was a legendary former Seguin ISD teacher and who passed away in 2022.
While the two Jack Lees are not related, trustees and soon -- community members alike will be marveling at the rare and heartfelt coincidence.
In fact, after being named the lone finalist, Dr. Lee couldn’t help but acknowledge the uniqueness of it all — especially after a moment shared with his own family.
“It's always fascinating when you show up at a board meeting and you know that everyone is waiting to see who you are. and you instantly know that the eyes are going to be on you. And especially when you pull up in your son says dad, that building has your name on it. And I have to say, Jackson, that's not this Jack Lee, that's a different Jack Lee,” chuckled the lone finalist.
While they didn’t plan for it, District 6 Trustee Lisa Burns agrees that it certainly caught their attention. Nonetheless, she’s excited about what this Jack Lee will bring to the table.
“What I just wanted to say is the very first words that we heard out of Dr. Lee's mouth were, ‘I am Jack Lee, and I am not that Jack Lee!’ And I will tell you, when he said it, he said it with humility and respect that he truly had done his research and understood how much Jack Lee meant to this community and that was that. And at that moment, I'm like, oh, I'm so excited about this. And then at the end of that first interview, Dr. LeeLeended us homework. He handed us an inch binder full of papers for us to review on his thoughts on running a district. And it was a phenomenal work product that he had done for us, and it included QR codes and Google Drive and links and videos and I was just blown away by the level of preparedness, and (I’m) just so excited about what this fall will look like,” said Burns.
District 7 Trustee Josh Bright says the legacy of the first Jack Lee is deeply rooted in Seguin ISD’s history. Now, the district, he says, is honored to be welcoming another Jack Lee – a Jack Lee he believes will bring his
own legacy of educational leadership to the district.
“I know the impact that was left by that gentleman in this community who we named that building after. I believe wholeheartedly that this Dr. Jack Lee is going to leave that same impact on the community while he's here. So, I'm really excited about him being our lone finalist and I can't wait to see what he can do,” said Bright.
Also, welcoming Dr. Lee was Board Vice President Linda Duncan. Duncan who represents District 4 says this twist of fate and moment of honor; makes it even more meaningful for her to share with him what Matador pride is all about.
“I just like to say, Dr. Jack Lee, I think you knew this about me when we first met -- that I'm a dedicated Matador fan, and it means something to me to say to you, ‘Welcome to Matador Nation!’ I cannot wait to teach you the fight song,” said Duncan.
The Seguin ISD unanimously named Dr. Lee as its lone finalist for superintendent during Tuesday night’s regular meeting. The board is expected to wait for the state mandated 21-days until it can finalize his hiring during a special meeting on July 10.
Finalist, continued.
Dr. Lee says his 20 years of experience -- both in administration and in the classroom -- is what he believes will help guide Seguin ISD toward its goals.
“A lot of times when you’re looking at a superintendent and you’re looking at positions and working with the board and working with an entire community, you’re looking for someone who fits you, who fits your community, who fits your board, who fits the overall school district. And I think the Seguin board saw that in me. I think they saw some of the experiences that I have. Some of the academic progress that I’ve (had) in the districts that I’ve worked in, to get us where we want to be and where we need to be. And so, I think that is just some of that experience of the growth that we’re experiencing here. I have experience with bonds. I have experience with tax ratification elections. And so, I think that just my experience, my personality, it all just fit. And I was lucky. I was the lucky one -- is what it really comes down to,” said Dr. Lee
He says he’s committed to working alongside the community to ensure that all students benefit from a high-quality education and are prepared for the next level.
“Our community here in Seguin is one that wants their schools to be successful. I think they want a school system that prepares students for that next level, whether that is college, whether that is military service, whether that’s joining the workforce. And we’re going to partner together to be able to figure out what’s the best way to get our students prepared for what works for Seguin. It is very much about us defining the Seguin way, what is our way, and handling and preparing our students for what’s next. And we’re excited to be a part of Matador Nation. We’re excited to be here in Seguin, and we’re looking very much forward to being here full-time,” said Dr. Lee.
Excited about this next chapter for Seguin ISD is Board President Denise Crettenden, who says she couldn’t be more thrilled with the district’s selection.
“I think he has really high expectations and really high standards, and I think that’s something that we need, somebody who really believes that our kids can achieve these things and just figuring out what do we need to get there. Not can we get there? But just what are we doing to get there? said Crettenden.
When it came to the pool of 50 applicants, Crettenden, who represents District 5, says Dr. Lee stood out for his enthusiasm and his desire to lead not only teachers, but all employees.
“I think that absolute enthusiasm for kids, like there’s people who are educators and they’re good at all the day to day stuff, and he’s going to be great at all those things. And a lot of our applicants were. They were great at curriculum, they’re great at being the, you know, basically chief operating officer, they’re all those operational things. But on top of all that, in addition to all that, there is just absolute enthusiasm for kids, the respect for educators, all those things in one package. And I just really think our students and our staff, our parents and our community are really going to find a great leader in Dr. Lee,” said
Crettenden.
Crettenden says it was ultimately Dr. Lee’s proven record of success that helped him land the job
“I think if you look at a lot of things from their school district, you’ll be really impressed with the things that they’re doing. Their strategic plan was really impressive -and just how they monitor those things, the expectations they have and the details -- the things that make their community unique. I think he’s going to have a great appreciation for what makes our community unique. He did his homework for sure when he came for both the first and second interview. He had done a lot of homework on Seguin ISD. He presented this with a lot of information about things. He immediately saw that that we could be, doing better and things that we were doing well.
Dr. Lee has held prior leadership roles in both Blooming Grove and Hillsboro ISDs. Also, a former band director, he holds music education degrees from UT Arlington and a doctorate from Texas A&M UniversityCommerce.
Originally from Whitney, Texas, Dr. Lee and his wife Jessica, also an educator, have two children: Jackson and Emmy.
The appointment follows an intensive hiring process conducted by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Search Services. Trustees are expected to take a final vote after the state-required 21-day waiting period at a special meeting scheduled for July 10. Until that time, Seguin ISD’s current interim superintendent, Elizabeth Banks, will continue her role –overseeing the district.

(Boston, MA) -- A federal judge is ruling against the Trump adminstration cuts to National Institutes of Health grants. Reagan-appointed Judge William Young declared the cuts “illegal” and “void” and ordered many of the grants to be restored. He said the cuts represent racial discrimination and discrimination against America’s LGBTQ community. Young added he would be blind not to call it out and that it’s his duty to call it out. He said he has “never seen government racial discrimination like this.” An analysis published in JAMA last month found the Trump administration has terminating nearly two-billion dollars in grants in less than 40 days.
(Undated) -- All staff members who were laid off from the 9-11 health care program have been rehired. John Feal is a lead advocate for 9-11 victims and says everyone was brought back but there’s a fight to get legislation passed for more money. He and others with 9-11 illnesses are in Washington this week for meetings where they will push for more money because Feal says medical costs have risen and more people have enrolled over the years. The program provides funding for roughly 140-thousand responders and survivors of the 9-11 terror attacks.
(Sacramento, CA) -- COVID-19 cases are increasing in some parts of California due to a new, highly contagious variant called Nimbus. The variant is linked to severe throat pain, often described as razor blade throat. While this term is new, the extreme sore throats have been reported before. The Nimbus variant has been rising since May in California and now accounts for about 55 percent of current cases in the state, up from just two percent in April. According to the Department of Public Health, wastewater testing shows that coronavirus levels in wastewater are now at a “medium” level in California, the first time since April that they haven’t been low.
(Des Moines, IA) -- The Iowa Department of Agriculture has confirmed the state’s first case of the cattle disease Theileria orientalis Ikeda. The disease can cause anemia and death in beef cattle and was found in a herd in Van Buren County. According to Iowa State University Extension, it is spread by the invasive Asian longhorned tick. Officials say there is no known risk to public health.
