(Seguin) – The celebration of Texas Independence Day returns this weekend to the heart of downtown Seguin. The Seguin Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas invites the public to participate in a Toast to Texas celebrating 189 years since declaring the Republic of Texas free and independent on March 2, 1836.
Julie Sheldon, the president of the DRT Abishai Mercer DicksonSeguin Chapter, says after last year’s successful move from the Sebastopol House to Central Park, the group has officially decided to now host
this celebration on the first Saturday in March from here on out.
“We had record attendance and an abundance of local support (on a Saturday). We were excited about that because that would give students the opportunity to come with their family to also to enjoy the program itself and to honor Texas Independence Day. So, we thought well, let’s just do the first Saturday of March because March is Texas History Month. It’s all encompassing and we talked with the city and with the parks department who have been Texas, pg. 4
(Seguin) -- Teatro is excited to bring our 40th Annual Noche de Gala Competencia de Vocalista to the Seguin community!
What does “Noche De Gala” mean? Noche De Gala literally translates into “GALA EVENING.”
On January 11, 1985, Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin began the “Noche De Gala” tradition, and it has been so popular that the community has kept it alive.
The purpose of the first Noche De Galaevent was to offer the community a cultural as well as a social evening of mariachi music and folklórico dancing. This event is consistent with Teatro’s major goals i.e., 1) to promote a better understanding of the Mexican American people and their culture; and
2) to provide the Mexican American people of Seguin, Guadalupe County, and the surrounding communities a responsible as well as creative outlet to participate in and contribute to the social life of the area.
This event also provided a hometown audience that Teatro’s very own Mariachi Juan Seguin could share and showcase their talents. The “Original” Mariachi Juan Seguin consisted of majority hard working adults who were learning to pay the guitar, vihuela, guitarron, violin, and trumpet as well as several high school and junior high students. They were a hit in and around Seguin! Since the inception of the Noche De Gala the Mariachi Juan Seguin has always been present and this year is no different. Although this group
is mostly high school and middle school students, we still have several adults playing within the group because of their love of music. Vocalistas from numerous South and Central Texas communities will take the stage at the Texas Lutheran University Jackson Auditorium in Seguin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, 7PM.
The singers will be the heart of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin’s 40th Annual Noche de Gala Competencia de Vocalistas. We will also have special performances by the Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa, Mariachi Juan Seguin, and the famous Mariachi Las Alteñas. Nineteen vocalistas will compete in four divisions: middle school, high school, University, and Community. Noche, pg. 4

(Seguin) -- It's clean up time again, this weekend, for a portion of the city of Seguin. The WestEnd Neighborhood Project is once again teaming up with Texas Lutheran University to host a clean up day for the west side of Seguin.
The project has been spearheaded for years by former Seguin City Councilman Chris Rangel. Rangel says this year's clean up will be held on Saturday morning at the corner of Jones Avenue and Dolle Avenue, near Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, which is the former Juan Seguin campus.
“On (Saturday), March 1st, we'll be having our West End Neighborhood Project cleanup. (It will be held) with our partner, Texas Lutheran University, during (its) Hot Dog Day of Service. The time will be from 8:30 until 11 (Saturday morning). These times are set, and we cannot accept anything before or after that time. (There will be) no exceptions,” said Rangel.
Rangel says people are encouraged to bring out unwanted items. He says they will also be picking up items throughout the area. And like most clean-up efforts, there are some things that can't be accepted during the event.
“We can’t accept hazardous waste, oil, paint, (outdoor) brush, and especially (no) tires. We will accept automobile batteries but give us a call so we can pick those up. We invite anyone that would like to help make a difference for someone else, to please (also) give me a call at 830-557-3436. We really want to thank the city of Seguin and Waste Connections for their continued support -- without your support, this would not be possible,” said Rangel.
TLU and the West End Neighborhood Project have been offering this free service as a way to promote pride and cleanliness on the west side of Seguin. Rangel says these kinds of partnerships are making a difference on the west end, which is described as a large portion of the city of Seguin.
“It usually ran from north of Court Street, west of Guadalupe Street, all the way to the Vaughn/Hwy. 46/ TLU area, and all the way up to New Braunfels Street. Sometimes we get calls from somewhere else (in the city), and we then would send a truck or trailer over there,” said Rangel.
The cleanup around the WestEnd neighborhoods will run from 8:30 to 11:30 this Saturday morning at the city park, located at the corner of Jones and Dolle avenues.
(Schertz) -- A Schertz man is in the Guadalupe County Jail after stealing a vehicle at gunpoint and later firing at multiple vehicles.
Schertz Police officials say the incident first began on Tuesday at 11:35 p.m. at the HEB located at 17460 Interstate 35 North. They say soon after the suspect, Derrick Escobar, 45, stole the vehicle, officers received another call about gunfire in the 2900 block of Candleberry Dr. Upon arrival, officers could hear additional shots being fired. It was at that time that they were assisted by the Cibolo
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
PD who used a UAS (drone) and located the suspect in the 1600 block of Yucca Park.
Escobar is said to have been actively shooting at multiple vehicles and residences. He was also seen shooting at the drone. Officers say
they initiated contact with Escobar who was given commands and surrendered to the officers without further incident.Escobar was in possession of two handguns and was wearing body armor at the time of the incident. Schertz PD officials say it appears as though Escobar was experiencing a mental health crisis. Escobar was arrested and booked into the Guadalupe County Jail without incident. He is charged with Aggravated Robbery; Impersonating a Public Servant; Deadly Conduct and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

such tremendous support with us to be able to bring this to the community. We wouldn’t be able to do it to the extent that we are moving without their support there,” said Sheldon.
Sheldon says with this new move, also came the opportunity to add more entertainment and activities for the entire family.
“Opening entertainment will be a German Edelweiss Kinderchor and Kinder Tanzen with mariachi and or folklorico to follow. Sharing local information of interest at this year’s event will include The Seguin-Guadalupe Heritage Museum; the Seguin Conservation Society; Magnolia Hotel; Guadalupe County 4-H Shooting Sports Club; Guadalupe County Texas Master Naturalist; Wilson Pottery Foundation; Sebastopol House Historic Site; Seguin Art League and demonstrations of blacksmithing techniques from the 1800s,” said Sheldon.
Seguin’s 39th annual Toast to Texas event begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday. It will be followed with the annual ceremony at 1:30 p.m., and the official Texas Toast at 2:10 p.m.
“We will help them gather at 1 o’clock to take their seats and at 1:15 p.m., the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Posse will deliver a proclamation and musical entertainment will be performed by Clint Taft and the Seguin High School drumline. It was very impressive last year when the Jefferson Drumline was able to perform but this year, we have the high school so having it now on the first Saturday in March just lends us the opportunity to share it with the community. Then towards the end of the program, there will be a toast led by Floyd McKee. Attendees do get their small flag, spring water and program to follow along with,” said Sheldon.
Also, marking the occasion this year will be a pilgrimage walk past a collection of historic buildings in downtown Seguin. Sheldon says this new added tradition falls in line with the group’s mission “to perpetuate the memory and spirit of those who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas.”
“After the ceremony, visitors will be invited to join a pilgrimage walk past the Magnolia Hotel on the way to the Heritage Village, a couple of blocks away. DRT ladies will lead the procession. At the village, Conservation Society docents will offer a glimpse into the past through its collection of historic buildings. It’s the spirit of all people of what has been achieved and maintained because we wouldn’t be able to do the things that we do without that perseverance,” said Sheldon.
Upon arriving, residents are encouraged to stop by the DRT booth to pick up a scavenger hunt sheet. Sheldon says folks will be encouraged to follow the clues around downtown. She says the hope is that each person leaves this year’s event with a little more history under their belts.
All events are free and open to the public.
Noche, continued.
We have a special elementary singer who will be showcased as she was the only one brave enough to register and we know the community will show her all the support in the world. These vocalistas are some of the very best and will don the stage to compete for the coveted title of being the best of the best in their respective divisions.
“We are very excited to showcase the amazing talent you can find in Seguin and throughout Texas. said Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa, Teatro’s executive director. Mariachi Las Alteñas, “Texas finest all female mariachi” from San Antonio, will provide live music for each vocalista’s performance.

(Lubbock, TX) -- Texas is reporting the first measles death in the U.S. since 2015. The death was confirmed by the head of public health for Lubbock’s health department. Seven other states have reported measles cases so far this year including Alaska, California, Georgia, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and Rhode Island. The outbreak in Texas has infected more than 120 people. The disease was considered to be eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.
(Washington, DC) -- New York Senator Kirstin Gillibrand is leading a bipartisan charge to fix the World Trade Center Health program. The New York Democrat was joined at a Wednesday afternoon news conference in Washington by Republican Representative Andrew Garbarino of Long Island and Brooklyn Democrat Dan Goldman. They say the program will be forced to say “no” to enrolling new 9-11 first responders and survivors because of a funding shortfall. Gillibrand says actuaries say it’ll take three-billion-dollars to adequately fund the program through its 2090 expiration date. That’s what they’re seeking in their bill called The 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act of 2025 .
(Washington, DC) -- DOGE leader Elon Musk claims U.S. efforts to prevent Ebola have been restored. The tech billionaire attended President Trump’s cabinet meeting on Wednesday and admitted that his DOGE agency “accidentally canceled” efforts by USAID to prevent the spread of Ebola. He then insisted, though, that the efforts were quickly restored when the mistake was discovered, and claimed, “there was no interruption.” His claim is being refuted, however, by current and former USAID officials, who tell the Washington Post that their Ebola prevention efforts have been largely halted since Musk and his DOGE team took over last month.
(Mountain View, CA) -- The FDA is giving the thumbs up on a smart watch safety feature. On Wednesday, Google revealed that the agency cleared the Loss of Pulse Detection on the Pixel Watch 3. The feature was announced last August and is currently available in 14 countries. The FDA’s approval now paves the way for it to be available to the U.S by the end of next month. The feature is designed to ask a watch user if they’re okay if a pulse is not detected. If there’s no response, the watch calls 9-1-1 and also gives the location of the user.
