Computer giveaway

Library looking for families with no working home computer

(Seguin)- The Seguin Public Library is hosting a computer giveaway. The library is teaming up with the nonprofit company Compudopt in hopes of giving away refurbished laptops to families so that they may thrive in today’s digital world.

Assistant Library Director Hannah Farmer says Compudopt will be accepting registration through this Friday for all those families who currently do not have a computer at home.

“It just asks them a couple of questions including that question, do you have a working computer at home? If you answer no – if you do

not have a working computer but maybe you have a working tablet –that doesn’t count. They are asking specifically about a computer like a laptop or a desktop computer and then you would qualify and like I said, Compudopt does a lottery system and we will draw the number of names that they have devices for and contact those families,” said Farmer.

Those randomly selected will also receive a two-year warranty on the laptop along with free tech support.

According to Compudopt, more than 41 percent of families still lack access to a computer at home.

Navarro ISD recognized on Senate Floor for advocacy efforts

(Geronimo) – The Navarro ISD was recently recognized on the Texas Senate floor for its advocacy efforts for public education. The recognition came during a visit to the Texas State Capitol on Tuesday, February 18, when district leaders attended the joint Legislative Conference hosted by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).

Superintendent Epley, Assistant Superintendent Dr. David Kauffman, Board President Melissa Sartain, Board Assistant Secretary Dan Reinhard, and Trustee Dr. Lacey Gosch represented Navarro ISD at the conference, which provided school board members and administrators with updates on legislative matters and insights into key education legislation. The group heard from prominent officials including House Public Education Chair Brad Buckley, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Reps. Gary VanDeaver and James Talarico, and Comptroller of Public Accounts Glenn Hegar.

In addition to attending the conference, the Navarro ISD team held meetings with several legislators and their staff, including Public Education Vice Chair, Rep. Diego Bernal, Public Education Committee member, Rep. Alan Schoolcraft, Senator Donna Campbell’s Education Lead, Jim Morales, and Rep. Cunningham’s Chief Roel Benavides. These meetings provided an opportunity to discuss Navarro ISD’s specific legislative priorities and ensure lawmakers understand the needs of the growing district.

The highlight of the visit was the recognition on the Senate floor by Dean Senator Judith Zaffirini. Senator Zaffirini also met with the Navarro ISD team to express her support for public education.

Superintendent Epley emphasized the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees’ commitment to advocating for the best interest of the district and its students. “It is imperative that we communicate our legislative priorities and ensure lawmakers understand the needs of our growing district,” stated Superintendent Epley. “Legislation related to

Computer, continued.

They say this impacts family time, the ability to do homework and can even create social barriers.

Farmer says while the local library provides access to computers, there is still a large need for families all over.

“I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but what we find is that a lot of people have smart devices and mobile devices like their smartphones and tablets

public school funding, student academic and counseling services support, teacher and staff support, school safety and Chapter 37 reform, property value impact on district funding, and bond election restriction proposals all directly affect Navarro ISD.”

Board President Melissa Sartain added, "I would like to thank Mrs. Epley for her engagement in legislative advocacy for Navarro ISD. She does an excellent job at communicating legislative updates to the school board and was the catalyst in getting us involved, as trustees, in public education advocacy. I appreciate that she ensures that we are aware of these opportunities to represent Navarro at the Capitol and facilitates those for us. It was also great to share the opportunity with Mr. Reinhard and Dr. Gosch and listen to their insights and discuss their concerns in our meetings as well."

The district recognizes the importance of sharing its specific needs and priorities with lawmakers to inform the legislative process and support Navarro ISD’s goal of delivering the highest quality educational experience and opportunities for its students and families.

but fewer and fewer people have working computers and there are still a lot services that you need a full computer connected to the Internet to do job applications. Then there are some government websites that require like the Smart ID program and some of those things, you just cannot do with a mobile device.

Furthermore, a lot of people are using their mobile device data and not necessarily connecting to Wi-Fi so one other service that the library

provides are mobile hotspots for checkout so that people can actually connect to an internet connection and not be using their cellphone data,” said Farmer.

Farmer says if more folks register than there are devices, then the organization says it is committed to do another random drawing. To register, scan the provided QR code or visit bit. ly/CUDSeguin.
