Student named winner of this year's KWED Christmas Angel contest By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- "I think this wonderful girl that radiates light in an often dark world deserves a little light given back this Christmas season." Those are the written words of area resident Ora Cevallos as she describes her little cousin Angel Nicole Longoria, the winner of this year's KWED Christmas Angel Contest. Longoria, a junior at Seguin High School, says she was surprised to learn that she had been chosen to win the $500 cash prize from the Christmas Angel. In years past, it was the student who wrote a letter about their own families explaining why they were needing or deserving of the prize.

Ora Cevallos's letter about her little cousin Angel Nicole Longoria, 18, was chosen as the winner of this year's KWED Christmas Angel contest earning Longoria and her family with $500 cash.

This year, however, the contest encouraged the adults in the community to do the writing and write in about a student who they felt deserved this year's recognition. As part of the contest rules, the

letter by the adult would have to be read live on the air at Seguin Radio KWED. This would also be the first time that Longoria would hear the words spelled out by her cousin. Sitting across from Longoria in the studio, Cevallos reads, "Dear Christmas Angel, I've never written one of these, however, I know of someone that is very deserving of your grace. A (junior) at Seguin High School, a girl that has overcome tremendous strife and coincidentally her name is Angel Nicole Longoria. As a baby, Angel fought to stay in this world and thanks to one woman and her bone marrow transplant halfway across the country, Angel was given the opportunity to thrive. I have seen firsthand how this spunky, loving and caring girl has made those around her world so much brighter." Cevallos went on to share that while although she has come this far, the teenager faces yet another new set of challenges. See ANGEL, page 3

Seguin says good-bye today to local ambassador, community volunteer By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

angelpest.com

830.379.3277

(Seguin) -- Friends, family and the business community are mourning the loss of what they say was Seguin's loudest cheerleader and hardest working ambassador. Today is the funeral for Fanny Harkins. Harkins, a Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce ambassador, a local realtor and community volunteer, died Thursday. The news of an illness and then her rapid decline in health came as a shock for many who over the years have crossed paths with Harkins. Dana Hall, the communications director for the Seguin Chamber of Commerce, says it's going to be difficult to continue Seguin without "Fanny."

“We’ll get those little devils!”

"When I first came to work at the chamber, she was working really heavily with the convention and visitors bureau and traveling to travel shows throughout the state of Texas selling Seguin. Like, she truly was the heart of Seguin, trying to get people to move here, trying to get tourists to come. Her positivity was so catching and I don't know if I've ever heard a bad thing about anybody out of her mouth," said Harkins.

joined the chamber's ambassador's program 25 years ago and was named Ambassador of the Year in 2017.

Chamber President Kendy Gravett, says Harkins was an elite volunteer for not only the chamber but for all of Seguin. She says her enthusiasm was never overlooked. "I just think Fanny equals love, a heart of gold. She vol-

unteered for everything always and she showed up with a fabulous smile and a great big hug no matter how she felt, no matter what was going on. She always showed up and showed her best face and I've hardly met anyone like that in my life," said Gravett. Hall says "Fanny" was indeed a one of a kind individual. She says not everyone can leave an impression like she did. She says every hug, every smile and every campaign for Seguin just created a better community. "So many people have already said this that Fanny was one of those people who had the ability to befriend you immediately and never let you out of her reach. She loved everyone and truly deeply cared about people. You don't see that a lot in people and I think that when I learned that she was ill, I started reflecting on how I could be better and how I could honor her by trying to live the kind of life that she lived," said Harkins. Although many will remember Harkins for her role with the chamber, other groups and churches are also experiencing the loss. Those groups and efforts that she held dear included St.James Catholic Church, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the Seguin Citizen's Police Academy, Catholic Daughters, The Heritage Museum, the Silver Center, Showcase Seguin, the Citizen's Emergency Rescue Team, Badges, Bike & Tykes, the American Red Cross, the Big Red Barn, the Salvation Army and the Texas Theater. The funeral for Harkins will be held today at 3 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church. A private interment will be held at St. James Catholic Cemetery.

She reads, "However, recently her health has begun to decline once more along with a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes in which the complications of her infancy has caused her body to react negatively, struggling with the insulin and Angel has fallen on hard times emotionally. Furthermore, just this week, she discovered she has Adrenocortical Disease and it has put a monumental weight on

her shoulders." The letter wraps up with a plea to the Christmas Angel as Cevallos shares how "this wonderful girl that radiates light in an often dark world deserves a little light given back this Christmas season." With tears and pure joy in her heart, Longoria managed to muster up the words that mean the most. "I love you so much and thank you for doing this for me," said Longoria. See ANGEL, page 7

The Tigers shot 50 percent from the field for the game and had a 38-20 advantage in points in the paint. 2019

KWED Christmas Angel contest Winner ANGEL, continued from page 3 Holding back the tears was also difficult for Cevallos who for a very long time has kept her little cousin's battles and victories close to her heart. "I thought that this change was a good idea because I know some kids are a little scared or some kids don't know and who knows them best then the adults who surround them but one morning, I was waiting in my car to go to work

and I was like 'oh hey, let's put on KWED and right when it came on, there was the story that you had done about the changing of the rules for the Christmas Angel and the first thing I thought of was who I thought was the most deserving person ever and I took my phone out as soon that story was read and I started writing and writing and I got emotional but all I could think about was Angel because she's like a sister to me -although, she's my cousin. She's just a very sweet and loving and crazy spunky person but that has had a lot of hard times and if I couldn't

help her in a way I could personally do it then at least, I could try this," said Cevallos. At the end of the radio interview, Longoria, again, couldn't help but thank her cousin who she now knows will always be in her corner. "Thank you Ora. I love you. You know I've been through a lot and you are always there for me and I appreciate it a lot," said Longoria. The KWED Christmas Angel again thanks all those who submitted entries in this year's contest and looks forward to spreading even more Christmas spirit in 2020.

Frances Grace “Grandma Fanny” Harkins On Thursday, December 19, 2019, Frances Grace “Grandma Fanny” Harkins, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 86. Fanny came into the world on September 6th, 1933 in Corpus Christi, Texas to parents Grace and Ed Stock. When Fanny was 17, her family moved to Seguin and she was the proudest graduate of the class of 1952 at Seguin High School. In 1953, she met her match in Jack Harkins and the two were wed in 1954 in Seguin. They have three children: Debi, Nancy, and Jay. Fanny embraced the Catholic community, and over the years participated in the St. Ann’s Circle, Catholic Daughters, worked as the church secretary, Grievance Committee, served as a Eucharistic Minister, as well as on the church council. She was also a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she served on the church council and as a Eucharistic Minister. In the early 90’s, after many years of chasing her growing grandchildren and holding various clerical positions, Fanny decided to become a real estate agent. Fanny quickly realized she was born for this work and it became one of her passions. She was active in the Seguin Guadalupe County Board of Realtors and served on several of their boards. In fact, while in the hospital she boasted that she even “closed on a house last week”. Fanny traveled the world with her sister, Sophie. She sent her family postcards from weeks long trips to the Middle East, Asia, South America, and Europe. You name it and she’s been there. She was always excited to share her favorite traveling tip to donate her clothes along the way to make room for gifts in her suitcase. After every trip, her grandkids would gather around to see the amazing gifts she would bring back from her many adventures. When she wasn’t traveling on the weekends, you would most likely find her spending time with family and cheering for her beloved Aggie football team. Fanny loved the City of Seguin and the city loved her back. She was proud to be from this community and would tell anyone that would listen. She took newcomers on tours that would last way too long - but she was so excited to share all the special things about Seguin that make this community a home. Her family would joke that she was determined to be in the Gazette everyday as the “Queen of Seguin” - either through her work at the Chamber of Commerce, as one of the first graduates of the Seguin Citizen Police Academy or other volunteering gigs. She prided herself on being

everyone’s grandma and required hugs — not handshakes — from everyone she’d meet. She was a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador for 30 years where she was presented the Ambassador of the Year award (a couple of times) as well as the Community Service Award. Fanny was also awarded the Zonta Woman of the Year award and the Seguin Gazette Newspaper award for Citizen of the Year. She chaired the Seguin La Posada’s event for several years. Most recently, while in the hospital, Fanny was presented the Seguin Chamber of Commerce “Emeritus Ambassador” award for excellence, dedication and service to our community. During her final days, Fanny did what she did best. She made everyone around her laugh, feel her love, and find peace. Special thanks to the team at GRMC and Guadalupe Regional Hospice Services for all that they did to make her comfortable in her final days. Fanny was a woman who overcame many challenges and yet saw everyday as a blessing and an opportunity. Her determination and love for everyone came from her unwavering faith in God‘s promise of eternal life. She was “Grandma” to so many and we know that she is dancing with Jack in heaven to her favorite Charley Pride song, Crystal Chandelier. Fanny is preceded in death by her husband Jack Harkins. She is survived by sister Sophie Stock Valenta, brother Sam Stock, daughter Debi Holz and husband Kyle, daughter Nancy Mercer and husband Doug and son Jay Harkins; grandchildren Bree Holz Gonzales and husband Roger, Ryan Holz and wife Sarah, Sondra Schriewer Lehmann and husband Keenan, Stefan Schriewer and wife Taylor, Dylan Harkins, Cade Mercer and Michaela Mercer and great grandchildren Raelyn Gonzales and Brenna Gonzales. Pallbearers include Kyle Holz, Doug Mercer, Roger Gonzales, Keenan Lehmann, Stefan Schriewer, Ryan Holz, Dylan Harkins, Cade Mercer, David Mercer, Tim Dudley and D.L. Schraub. Honorary pallbearers: Charles Villeneuve, Billy Harkins, Stanley Naumann, Randy Wilson and JoAnn Richardson. Memorials may be made to the St. James Catholic School, 510 S. Camp, Seguin, Texas, 78155, Seguin Citizens Police Academy Alumni, 350 N. Guadalupe St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, and the Seguin Public Library, 313 W. Nolte, Seguin, Texas, 78155. Visitation will begin Monday, December 23rd, 2019 at 1:45 p.m.at St. James Catholic Church followed by the recitation of the holy rosary at 2:30pm followed by a funeral mass at 3pm and a private interment. The Harkins family asks that you join us following mass to celebrate Fanny’s life and legacy at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 4-8pm. Please join us and raise a glass in celebration of Fanny and a life well lived, a family well loved and a community well cherished. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912. See OBITS, page 16

Listeria Outbreak Linked To Hard-Boiled Eggs (Gainesville, GA) -- Beware when eating hard-boiled eggs as a listeria outbreak is growing. Seven people in five states have gotten food poisoning so far with one person dying in Texas. The CDC says this only affects packaged hard boiled eggs bought in a store and not made at home. They were sold in plastic containers to be used in products like salads. It's believed the brand Almark Foods in Georgia is the likely source. The company has four facilities and delivers nationwide.

CDC Updates Number Of Vaping Cases (Atlanta, GA) -- The number of lung injury cases connected to e-cigarettes is hitting a new milestone. The CDC says more than 25-hundred people have been hospitalized as of this week. Cases have been reported in every state, Washington, D.C., and two American territories. There have also been 54 deaths as a result of vaping in more than two dozen states. Officials say the majority of patients are under 35year-old.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein Asks CDC To Study Link Between Climate Change And Early Births (Sacramento, CA) -- California senator Dianne Feinstein is asking the CDC to look into climate change and how it could affect childbirths. A UCLA study has prompted the Democrat to call on the health agency to consider the relationship between the warmer temperatures and early deliveries. The study found that birth rates climbed when days rose above 90 degrees and dropped again when the weather cooled. The letter from the senator also urges the agency to develop solutions to address the impacts of climate change on children's health.

Annual Teen Drug Report Has Mixed News (Rockville, MD) -- An annual report by the National Institute on Drug Abuse has mixed news this year about teen drug use. The Institute's "Monitoring the Future" report shows that while opioid use is way down, binge drinking is up. There's also a big increase in teen vaping and more marijuana use. Health experts say reducing teen drug abuse is important because the teen years are critical for brain development.
