(Seguin) -- It’s time to go nuts! The 20th Annual Pecan Fest returns to downtown Seguin this Saturday marking two decades of celebrating Seguin’s pecan heritage.
Blaire Friar, Main Street & CVB director, says Pecan Fest has long been Seguin’s signature fall event, drawing visitors from across Texas to enjoy live music, historic tours, and pecan-themed fun. She says this year’s festival features exciting new additions including a Kids Zone, Exhibitors Row, 143 vendor booths, and a mouthwatering Food Truck Throwdown featuring 18 food trucks serving up pecan-inspired creations.
“Pecan Fest has grown so much over the past twenty years,” said Friar. “We’re celebrating this milestone with new attractions
that highlight Seguin’s creativity, hospitality, and of course, our love for all things pecan.”
The fun begins early Saturday with the Seguin Film & Arts Festival at the Palace Theater, showcasing short films from across Texas and beyond -- all free to the public. History buffs can stop by the Haunted Magnolia Hotel Open House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or take part in Heritage Village Tours and the Seguin Heritage Museum Open House, both running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Art enthusiasts will enjoy the Seguin Art League’s Paint Out “Art in Autumn,” the 38 Pecans Exhibit, and the 5-H Ranch Exhibitors Row will be stationed around Central Park.

(Seguin) -- Members of the Seguin family will be traveling in from across the country this weekend to honor both their proud heritage and the man whose name the city bears. The Seguin Family Historical Society will host a special community celebration this Sunday, October 26, marking the 25th anniversary of the Juan Seguin Statue dedication in Central Park and the 219th birthday of Col. Juan N. Seguin, a hero of the Texas Revolution and one of the state’s most enduring figures.
The free public event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum.
Albert Seguin, a descendant of Juan Seguin, specifically a third great-grandson says this weekend’s celebration is an opportunity to offer up a mix of history, music, dance, and storytelling. He says it’s not only a chance to celebrate a milestone, but also an opportunity to reintroduce Seguin’s story to a new generation of residents who may not realize just how influential he was in shaping early Texas.
“I think it’s important that people return every once in a while and refresh their memory as far as the history is concerned. Texas recognized Juan Seguin as a Texas hero. Seguin, pg. 4

(Seguin) -- Seguin’s history takes center stage once more as the Saints Alive Riverside Cemetery Tour returns this October, inviting residents to walk among the city’s earliest pioneers and meet the women whose strength and vision helped shape the community that thrives today.
The tour, presented by the Affiliation for the Preservation of Shakespeare and Federated Club Rooms in partnership with the city of Seguin, raises funds for the historic clubhouse on River Street. The clubhouse was built in 1902 as the first facility in Texas designed specifically for women’s clubs to gather.
Elizabeth Martin, club member and the coordinator for this year’s group fundraiser, says Saints Alive transforms the 19th-century cemetery into a living stage. She says visitors stroll through winding paths, pausing at gravesites where local actors portray the city’s founders, visionaries, and everyday citizens who helped shape Seguin’s story.
“You arrive there and you have a real short welcome and then we all divide into eight groups because we go to eight different places and for 10 minutes, we will have someone dressed in the period clothes and they will portray and act as if they are the very same person and talk about their interesting lives and so it’s really fun. It lasts from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. When you arrive, you can either park in the area or go down to the Coliseum and catch the shuttle,”
said Martin.
Founded in 2012 by members Sudi Bruns and Pat Hoppe, the cemetery tour began as a creative way to support the building’s upkeep. Over the years, the production has evolved into one of the city’s most anticipated cultural experiences.
Unlike other years, this year’s production will shine a light on the women who built and sustained the community, from civic leaders to homemakers and teachers who guided the city through generations of change.
Marin says leading the cast of the past is one familiar person to the local organization.
“These people were chosen because we found them interesting when we were looking at all of the different people that were buried there and especially Ms. Ella Dibrell because she is like the mother of our clubhouse. She really got all the women interested in building a new clubhouse and that was back in 1902 when they put it in one of the spaces. It has been moved four times, but we thank her for doing that. She was a mover and a shaker,” said Martin.
The remainder of this year’s cast of historical portrayals includes Eugenia and Harry Burges, Anna Brodt, Evelyn Duggan, Catarina Knodel, Willie Mae Weinert, and Adelaida L. Montanez.

Fest, continued.
Families will also not want to miss the Leslie Lane Llama Farm Demonstration at the gazebo from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the always popular Get Crackin’ Contest at noon. Live music that afternoon will also be provided by Karess from 12 to 1:30 p.m.
Animal lovers can also head over to Barktoberfest at Seguin Brewing Co. from 12 to 6 p.m., while those 21 and older can “Go Nuts!” with a Pecan Old Fashioned Celebration at Johnny Pickles Distillery from 2 to 9 p.m. More live music will follow in the afternoon at Central Park. Performing will be Broken Arrow from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
Friar says Pecan Fest fun, however, does not stop in downtown Seguin. In fact, she says there will be something across the city including free transportation.
“Pecan Fest is not just downtown. It’s all around the community so the three largest events of the weekend are all on Saturday. It will be the downtown Pecan Fest. There are also the events that happen at the Big Red Barn. They have their own Pecan Fest celebration where they will have vendors out there as well. They will have the Texas Pecan Museum open for tours. They will have their antique tractor pull and a lot of exciting things out there as well. Then at the Sebastopol House there will be the Wilson Pottery Show where they will be displaying a lot of the really cool Wilson Pottery. They will have pottery demonstrations and things like that at that site and between all three of those events, we will have a shuttle that will take you and pick you up and take you to each stop so you can park downtown or park at the Big Red Barn and hop on the shuttle and check out all three of those events,” said Friar.
Events and activities over at the Big Red Barn also include farm animals, archery & blacksmithing & broom making demonstrations, crafts, a pecan scavenger hunt, hayrides, pecan baked goods, youth scarecrow contests plus square dancers and youth fiddlers’ performances.
The evening of Pecan Fest wraps up with the Hats Off to Juan Seguin Pub Crawl, kicking off with check-in at 6 p.m. Saturday at 1916 Bar & Bistro. Friar said participants will receive a lanyard featuring a map of the participating bars, where they can stop and purchase a drink at each location. Those who complete all the stops will be entered into a prize drawing set to take place next week.
A complete listing with all 2025 Pecan Fest details can be found at visitseguin.com .

Seguin, continued.
Therefore, they issued him a pension for life. So, if there were any naysayers in the community that disapproved of him (spent decades unfairly branded as a traitor and fled into exile) -- he was vindicated by the state of Texas and again given a pension for life and as far as the statue was concerned, I think it was a wonderful thing that we all did. It was a whole group of us that did that,” said Seguin.
Throughout the event, guests will get to enjoy performances by Mariachi Sangre de Mi Tierra and Ballet Folklórico De La Rosa. The program will also feature guest speakers Frank de la Teja, historian and author, who will share insights into the life of Seguin’s mother, Maria Josefa Becerra Seguin, and Janice Woods Windle, the acclaimed author of True Women, who will lend her historical perspective on Seguin’s significance.
Albert says for many, the event represents both remembrance and renewal.
He explains that while his ancestor is best known locally as the city’s namesake, his role in Texas history was far greater — as a soldier, statesman, and advocate for Tejano participation in the fight for independence.
He says Juan Seguin’s legacy today can be found across the state.
“There are eight to 10 schools named in his honor, a beautiful little park next to the San Jacinto monument – a Juan Seguin statute was at the Alamo. They just recently moved it to a different location. But he has been at The Alamo all of this time for about five to six years. He had the original headright to Galveston Island which he turned
Saints, continued.
Marint says a special highlight will feature members of the original Shakespeare Club of 1901- recreated by Eleanor Crettenden, Linda Duncan, Peggy Schott, and Mary Jane Windle. She says these actors will gather at a single gravesite to reenact the club’s very first meeting more than a century ago.
Riverside Cemetery itself is a landmark of Texas history. Established in the 1800s on land originally granted to Ezekiel Smith in 1837, it spans 15 acres and holds the remains of more than 2,000 individuals—including soldiers, statesmen, settlers, and former slaves.
The Saints Alive Riverside Cemetery Tour will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Riverside Cemetery located at 201 E. Klein St. Tickets are $20 and available at Gift and Gourmet, Keepers Interiors, and the Seguin Chamber of Commerce.
Tickets will also be available at the event.
it over to Michel Menard to create the city of Galveston and he was mayor of San Antonio. Some years back, a cousin of ours and local person went to Fort Worth, and she was so excited because she called me and said they have a Juan Seguin plaque here at the stockyards. They have these medallions on the sidewalk – there are several of them – and Juan Seguin is one of them. This just shows the recognition that he has gotten throughout the state of Texas and we have people that contact us from just about all over the world,” said Albert.
To continue forward with the preservation of his legacy, Albert says the Seguin Family hopes to extend a special new recognition during this weekend’s event.
“The Texas State Guard Association, it’s a military association obviously, and what they award is a military award of valor to someone that did something above and beyond the call of duty and they have been doing this for a number of years. This year, we are going to be awarding a local police officer and award of valor. It will be the first one for a Seguin Police Officer from the Seguin family,” said Albert.
Sunday’s event will not only include refreshments but the chance to win one of 25 special gifts and door prizes.
The celebration is being sponsored by the Seguin Family Historical Society in partnership with Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, the City of Seguin, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the San Antonio Area Foundation, the Union Pacific Community Ties Giving Grant, and the United Way of Guadalupe County, along with others committed to preserving and promoting local heritage.

Mildred “Sugar Puddin” Jean ArmstrongFennell of Missouri City, Texas passed away on October 17, 2025.
Visitation will be Friday, October 31, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary
Maxine Skotnik Luedke passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025 in Seguin, Texas due to complications from dementia. She was 93 years old. She was born in West Columbia, Brazoria County, on August 9, 1932 to Joe Will Skotnik and Malinda Dora Mazek.
She was the next to youngest of six children: four girls and two boys.
She was just a few days old when an unnamed Hurricane hit Freeport and she spent the night under a mattress with her mother for safety in their small wood frame house.
Growing up she was a tom-boy spending her time outside climbing trees and playing with her brothers. She was called “Cotton Top” by her family members because of the blonde hair she had as a young girl. As an adult, her family nickname was “Mackie”.
After graduating high school, she moved to Taft to live with one of her sisters and her husband. Shortly after, she started working at the local Dodge Car Dealership in Sinton and later on worked at the Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Sinton.
In 1952, she met the love of her life, Leonard John (L.J.) Luedke, who was working for the federal government in Sinton and they were wed on August 15, 1953. They had two sons, Jeffery and Mark. They were wed for almost 62 years until L.J. died in 2015.
After the birth of her first son, she dedicated all her energy and love to raising her two boys. She and L.J. were very supportive of their sons through all of their academic, social and athletic activities.
When her sons were teenagers, the family bought a boat and spent many enjoyable days on Lake Mathis. Her boys spent many summer days water skiing and the family spent time fishing for whatever was biting that day.

Edward Austin Blumberg left this world peacefully on October 18, 2025, surrounded by love.
Edward will be remembered as a gentle but fiercely loyal man. He loved traveling and is now on his greatest adventure. Edward was a talented carpenter, investor and rancher. He loved his family, his ranch, his steak and making his famous lasagna. His greatest desire in life was to be a nice man, help others and make everyone laugh. He accomplished all this and so much more.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Jane Blumberg

For many years, she was a tireless worker in Grace Lutheran Church in Sinton serving on the Altar Guild.
They lived together in Sinton for 42 years from 1953 to 1995. In 1996, she and L.J. moved to Seguin to be closer to their sons and escape the threat of hurricanes of south Texas. She and L.J. thoroughly enjoyed their final years in Seguin. They lived in a subdivision with wonderful neighbors. She was active in Emanuel’s Lutheran Church.
After they moved to Seguin, she enjoyed making day trips to the family farm property in Wilson County. She never hesitated to put on her gloves, snake chaps or rubber boots to do her share of work. She always willing to chop down brush/weeds or mow grass. She also enjoyed catching fish the pond.
Maxine, like all of her siblings and mother, was hard-working. She was in constant motion. She was also very giving and would give you the shirt off her back.
As a woman of faith, she served her church. As a Mother, she loved, supported, and was an active participant in the lives of her two sons. As a wife, she deeply loved her husband.
In heaven, I know she is shedding tears of joy when the Lord receives her as one of his good and faithful servants and when she is reunited with her late husband. We shall miss her very much. She is preceded in death by her parents; her three sisters Loraine Koenig, Josephine Carter, Irene “Pearly” Trentham, and two brothers Joe Skotnik, Jr. and Johnny Skotnik.
She leaves behind her sons, Jeffery Luedke and his wife Gina of San Antonio and Mark Luedke, of Seguin.
Her ashes will be interred in the Emanuel’s Lutheran Church Columbarium in a private ceremony.
Memorial contributions can be made to Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, 206 N. Travis, Seguin, Texas, 78155.
