to host barbecue SOLC to host Pumpkins on GVCCC chicken sale this Sunday Pikes Drive Thru event Proceeds to benefit counseling sessions for local residents
(Seguin) -- A crop of lighted pumpkins will be returning to the fields over at the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. The third annual Pumpkins on Pikes will be hosted as a drive thruevent giving families the chance to admire the lighted hand-carved pumpkins from the safety of their vehicles. SOLC officials say before they are displayed on top of pikes throughout the property, the pumpkins will judged. They say unlike past years, there is no pre registration and participants will have a couple of options in which to submit their pumpkin entry. Either they can
stop by and carve on site prior to judging or they can bring an already carved pumpkin with them. Cost is $20 to enter the contest. The top winners of the contest will be awarded several great prizes courtesy of the SOLC. Contest participants can arrive to carve and display their pumpkins as early at 5:15 p.m. It will be followed by judging at 7 p.m. and the start of the drivethru at 7:15 p.m. Cost for those just wishing to drive-thru the lighted pumpkin path is $10 a vehicle. All passengers must remain in the vehicle at all times. To enter the contest call 830-379-7652.

(Seguin) -- Although the Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center’s annual fundraiser will look a bit different this year, its tasty entree will still be the same. That’s according to Sean Hanon, the new executive director for the non-profit organization. Hanon says the group is preparing for its Sunday BBQ from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church. Now due to COVID-19, Hanon says Sunday’s fundraiser will strictly be drive through and will only include chicken. “Again, people who are accustomed to our fundraiser and the meal that we do, we are doing that a little different too because we are going to all drive-thru. What we are going to do is just a half a barbecue chicken. We are not going to do the sides this year and I hope that nobody is going to boycott us just for that reason but we just had to decide that because of the drive-through – doing an entirely drive through operation, we needed to streamline a little bit. So, we are doing half a barbecue chicken. It’s going to be a fantastic barbecue chicken. We are all going to get together and we are all going to cook it. We have a great team
that cooks it and prepares it and packages it up and gets it ready to go. We are going to do that on Saturday and then on Sunday, Oct. 25, you can come and get your half barbecue chicken,” said Hanon. Hanon says each year, the group relies on the BBQ Chicken Fundraiser to help cover the operating expenses that go into providing counseling services to local residents. “Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center is an ecumenical program that is supported by very many area churches. They are all represented on the board of directors and help us figure out the outreach that we want to do and help us stay afloat and help us do this fundraiser and what we do is we provide counseling opportunities for people regardless of their ability to pay. We work on a sliding scale. Normally, we have a very robust internship program. Again, with COVID, the internship program got a little bit suspended, but we are starting it back up as of this week as a matter of fact. We are going to have a whole lot more opportunities for lower income folks and those kinds of things because of our internship program and of course, we have engagements with all kinds of organizations—with NAMI of Guadalupe County and the United Way who also helps keep us supported,” said Hanon.
