Navarro ISD forms historical committee to preserve Panther legacy

(Geronimo) -- Navarro ISD is turning the page to the future --but not before preserving every chapter of its past.

Chelsea Ormond, Navarro ISD director of communications, marketing, and public relations says the district is excited to announce the formation of the Navarro ISD Historical Committee. She says the initiative is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history and traditions of the Panther community.

“As we continue to grow and we continue to build new schools – we are just growing, growing, growing and we always want to make sure we maintain our roots and our past and our heritage and all of the traditions that Navarro ISD and our Panther community have held on to for so long. We don’t want to lose that,” said Ormond.

Stockdale battles for $1 million turf prize, calls on Guadalupe County to vote

(Stockdale) -- When it comes to competition, neighboring Stockdale ISD knows how to play hard -- but this time, the Brahmas are taking their fight beyond the field.

The small-town school district has sprinted into the national spotlight, currently sitting at number 11 in the country in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights contest -- a campaign that could bring home $1 million in athletic facility upgrades.

Now, as they make their final push, Stockdale is hoping to draw inspiration — and hopefully votes — from its neighbors here in Seguin.

After all, Seguin knows what it takes to rally a community to victory. Just a couple of years ago, the city scored a $75,000 win from the Niagara Perk Your Park program, helping to fund a new Kids Kingdom playscape at Max Starcke Park. Like Stockdale ISD, Seguin residents voted daily to help their hometown cross the finish line in first place.

Now, Stockdale hopes to do the same. Shawn Alvarez, head football coach and athletic director for Stockdale, tells

FM 1044 neighbors gather for National Night Out

(Guadalupe County) -- More than 50 residents from Precincts 1 and 4 gathered at Creekbottom Farm for the 11th Annual FM 1044

Neighborhood National Night Out, hosted by Jackie and Charlene Nolte. The event once again highlighted community spirit, with both longtime residents and firsttime participants in attendance.

Sergeant Travis Caddell with the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office Support Services Division assisted with planning. GVEC

Journey Lineman Devin Dirst returned with a bucket truck demonstration and distributed safety information and water.

Constable Precinct 4 Harvey Faulkner, with the help of Grace Wolverton, served shaved ice, while neighbors contributed a wide

variety of homemade dishes.

During a brief community meeting inside the barn, attendees shared updates and gratitude. Among those present were Guadalupe County Sheriff Joshua Ray and several deputies, Pct. 1 Commissioner Jacqueline Ott, Assistant County Attorney and General Counsel Steven Tays, Constable Pct. 4 Harvey Faulkner and Jim Wolverton, Chief Tyler

Townsend and members of the Lake Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department, Tyler Benevides with the Marion VFD, Ryan Krause, candidate for U.S. House District 35, and GVEC

lineman Devin Dirst.

Organizers say the gathering continues to serve as a meaningful opportunity to strengthen neighborhood connections and support partnerships with local law enforcement and first responders.

a rarity in today’s game. He says the chance to secure a turf field and upgraded training equipment could be transformative for student-athletes across the district.

“In our football district, we are the only team with natural grass. Everybody else is on turf. In Wilson County, everybody else is on turf. I’m sure Guadalupe and Comal County—everybody is on turf, and I know with the whole injury thing with turf and some people wanting to go back to natural grass, it’s just hard for us to maintain. We don’t

have the kind of maintenance team to maintain a pretty grass field, and we don’t have anywhere else to practice,” said Alvarez.

Currently, Stockdale sits at number 11 on the national leaderboard, with the top spot held by a school in Arkansas. The competition is fierce, but Alvarez says he’s confident in the Braham spirit — and the support of the wider Guadalupe County community.

“The link is posted all over our social media pages. We are on Facebook. We are on Twitter. We are on Instagram. It’s in Seguin at some coffee shops but if anybody can just

scan the QR code, log in and vote daily. You can vote every day from your email address. But we just need as many votes as we can,” said Alvarez.

Even NFL legend Rob Gronkowski took notice, giving Stockdale a shout-out for cracking the contest’s top 25. Now, the Brahmas are aiming to take it all the way to the end zone -- with votes accepted daily through October 24 at the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights website.

To vote visit the Stockdale ISD Athletics Facebook page or visit the district’s website at stockdaleisd.org.

Votes can be cast once per day through Friday, October 24.

This new comm1ittee seeks the help of dedicated community members to gather, organize, and showcase the district’s extensive history.

“So, as we build these new spaces, we’ve got our new high school which will open when the students return in the spring semester on Jan. 7. So, our new high school is opening and then we will be breaking ground soon on our new Navarro South Elementary School off of Martindale Road and then our current campuses that we have now will undergo some renovations so as we continue to grow, we just wanted to make sure to honor our past and we thought a great way to do that would be to create some display cases in our campus. They have some glass cases that we are looking to fill. We just want to be able to provide some memorabilia, some different historical photos, documents, newspaper clippings and really just have a way to showcase our rich heritage,’ said Ormond.

According to Ormond, the mission of the committee will include assessing the district’s stored collection of historical items and seeking additional artifacts from the community. She says those could include old yearbooks, athletic gear, photographs or classroom items tied to Navarro ISD’s early years.

“We currently have a lot of items in storage that we have collected over many many years and then, we are also seeking if any community members have any kind of

historical things that they would like to lend or donate to the community. Our committee is going to go through that and sort it and do any kind of preservation that we need to do to be able to curate some really great, unique displays,” said Ormond.

Ormond says the initiative, again, is designed to make the district’s history visible and accessible to current and future students, staff and community visitors.

Navarro ISD is currently seeking volunteers to serve on the committee. Ormond says applications are encouraged from alumni, current families, staff, local historians and community members interested in contributing to the effort.

“It’s not just a working committee. If you don’t have the time to donate to come in throughout the process to be able to sort through some of those things, we do have the opportunity to maybe do a recording of your story or just share a picture of your class or an event that you remember really well. We may even have some video footage where visitors to our campus can scan a QR code in the display and then it plays a fun video. So, we have multiple opportunities to be able to serve without having to dedicate a lot of time to actually help us work here at our district to curate some of our things. There are ways to contribute without having to dedicate a lot of time,” said Ormond.

Those wishing to be a part of the effort are asked to visit www.navarroisd.us/historicalcommittee.
