Nominations now underway for KWED’s Top Choice Awards

(Seguin) — You might want to start thinking of all your favorite businesses in Seguin. The nomination period for KWED’s Top Choice Awards is now officially open. Darren Dunn, KWED and Seguin Daily News general manager, says this year’s list of categories includes everything from Top A/C Heating company to who makes the best margarita and much more.

“Nominations are now open for

our Top Choice Awards. We choose the top few nominees in each category and then they go on to the final ballot, but nominations are open now through April 10. You have an opportunity to go online. Big Red Barn to host CELEBRATION GALA

(Seguin) – The Big Red Barn will be opening its doors this Thursday in celebration of two decades of service. For the past 20 years, the Big Red Barn, the flagship of the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center, has continued to preserve the heritage of this area by providing education and awareness of the agriculture industry. In celebration, the organization will be hosting The Big Red Barn Gala: Celebrating 20 Years of Service this Thursday night.

Helping to promote the event is Gala Chairwoman Nicole Thibodeaux and her mother Susan Thibodeaux, a TAEHC board of director.

Nicole says the Big Red Barn is an important organization and one that folks should be lucky to have in their community. She says this is a one-time event to celebrate not only how far the organization has come but to also honor Founders, Wilfred and Betty Bartowskewitz.

“Wilfred actually came up with this idea. He told us at 2 a.m., he came up (with the idea), shot out of bed and wrote all of this down on a napkin and then he took it in, I think, to Guadalupe Grain the next day and just said, what do ya’ll think? And, I’m sure that they had no idea where this came from and probably thought that he was a little bit

crazy but it only took a couple of people for him to call to get this rolling and he always says that Charla Bading was one of the main people who helped him and they started gathering people and funding and they went ahead and started building this foundation. Now, the crazy thing to me is when you look at the early sketches of what they wanted to do of the Heritage Village in the back and also the main barn and all the different wings, the ag education wing and the equipment wing in the back and the pecan museum -- now that drawing that they did back then is almost identical to how it actually turned out,” said Nicole.

She says the Ag center and what it is able to do is a rare and unique organization serving families especially the school children of this area. Each year, she says the center welcomes thousands of kids and sends them home with a whole new outlook on the world of agriculture.

“So, for us to see how far we’ve come from that paper napkin to where we are now and to see that we have had over 70,000 kids, I think, come through. We had 2,100 kids last fall and we are about to start our April Spring Tours. We’ve seen kids from over 13 different counties.

there’s so many categories and we want to recognize those individuals, those companies, those corporations, those nonprofit groups that are doing tremendous work in this community and this is a way to say, ‘great job.’ So, the first step here is to nominate the organization or business of your choice and then we will go on to have the final voting a little bit later on. But it’s time for you to name your Top Choice,” said Dunn.

Dunn reminds readers and listeners that now is the time for nominations only. The actual voting, he says, will come later. So, folks are encouraged to stay tuned

and follow along.

“The voting will start shortly after the nominations are all sort of tabulated and we format those final voting forms. Then, the voting will be open for a couple of weeks. Once that is done, we will put together a terrific Top Choice guide that will allow people to see all those who were selected as the Top Choices for this last year. So, it’s another opportunity to tip your cap to those who are making a difference in this community,” said Dunn.

We’ve had countless volunteers donate their time usually real farmers and ranchers that are out here teaching the kids about agriculture and about this heritage. A lot of the family members of the buildings that have been donated, they know the house, they know the items that are in it and they can describe all of it and the fact that we have older volunteers that are from that generation that have firsthand knowledge and can speak to these kids about what that time felt like I think is so unique and so important,” said Nicole.

Like Nicole, Susan has also been helping to piece together all the fun details for the western style gala.

She says the attire is western cocktail and includes plenty of fun, food and live entertainment featuring music by the William Beckmann Band.

“Most of the kids in the area know the Big Red Barn and know what’s out there. But we want to show everyone what we do. It’s our chance to kind of brag on ourselves a little bit, have everything open. Then, we will have a catered meal from Black Tie Affairs out of San Antonio. We will have a live auction and a silent auction. We’ve got some very good items for the auction and starting about 9 o’clock, we will have entertainment. So, it’s going to be a full evening. It is a school night so we will end early maybe 10 or a little later. We’ve had good participation from the community, the area. Our table sales are pretty much sold out right now which is great. This being a one time event, we really appreciate that and we appreciate the support of the community for the Red Barn,” said Susan.

The celebration will also highlight the importance of

heritage and tradition. Nicole says the gala has become personal as her family sets out to recognize her late grandmother Marilyn Altwein, who for most of the 20 years was an active volunteer and member of the board. Nicole, who has been involved with the Ag center since 2006, says the education instilled in her by her grandmother helped her to quickly realize the importance of forwarding the educational information from one generation to the next.

“The reason that me and my mother Susan, really took on this gala is it is a love project for my grandmother Marilyn Altwein who passed away two years ago and mom took over her board position when my grandmother had gotten sick so she took over the board position and took on the Red Barn project as her love project so this is our way of honoring my grandmother Marilyn. She always wanted to have a big party, a fancy party, a nice party and a way to honor her best friend Wilfred Bartoskewitz and his wife Betty. So that’s kind of how this all of this really started. I just wanted to brag on her a little bit. The community knew her as just a force and we ended up getting to go around to the different businesses that saw her face twice year, every year to sponsor our different events and we got take on that project ourselves and remind them that Marilyn would have wanted them to be a part of this,” said Nicole.

TLU SID, Bryce Hayes, Awarded NCAA CSC Inclusion Grant

SEGUIN, Texas -- From among more than 150 applicants, Texas Lutheran Sports Information Director Bryce Hayes has been selected as one of six College Sports Communicators to receive the NCAA Inclusion College Sports Communicators UNITE Convention Grant. Hayes is also one of 22 College Sports Communicators (CSC) members selected to receive Convention Attendance Grants and will attend the association’s annual convention June 9-12 at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

Hayes will be one of 12 recipients attending their first CSC Unite convention. Nine are first-year CSC members and two have five or more years of experience in the profession. The class includes 11 men and 11 women.

This year’s class of recipients will be the ninth to participate. Nearly $140,000 has been distributed to 194 CSC members as reimbursement for convention-related costs over the program’s first eight years.

Each grant includes a complimentary convention registration, allowing the grant funds to go toward hotel nights, transportation and per diem.

Hayes is one of six members from the three NCAA divisions that will attend the convention as part of the NCAA Inclusion Grant program. In the sixth year of partnership

between CSC and the NCAA’s Leadership Development and Media Coordination and Statistics staffs, the program’s goal is to advocate for diversity within the athletic communications profession. The program includes a visit to the NCAA national office in August and pairs recipients with a CSC mentor for the upcoming academic year on top of covering registration fees, lodging and transportation.

The selection committee is composed of CSC officers, staff and members of special interest groups within the association.

As part of receiving a grant, each winner will help CSC’s convention operations team with on-site duties and provide written reviews of their experience following the convention.

“When you’re in this role, I’ve never thought I should be the story - as the focus should be on our student-athletes but it’s a tremendous honor to represent Texas Lutheran in this capacity,” said Hayes. “Yesterday was Easter Sunday and in church we talked about how the Lord has the power to deliver and I’ve been blessed to be put in situations to succeed from Bolton High School and everything that entailed, to Rhodes College and now being placed here in Seguin to work at TLU. I’ll be forever grateful to James Hill for pulling a football player out of the stands of a softball

game to start my sports information and social content journey as a college freshman and for his continued mentorship as well as his successor, Danielle Donze, who granted me the creative freedom on social media as a student. I can’t thank Coach Bill Miller enough for taking a chance on a kid from Memphis in the middle of the pandemic to run this department and thank you to the NCAA and the College Sports Communicators for recognizing me as one of the best up-and-comers in Division-III. I’ve had a great team of students that I’ve had the pleasure of working with and seeing grow since I arrived here in 2021. Hopefully, I’m just the first name the NCAA recognizes because with talent like Madi Johnson, Callie Brame, Missy Muras, Ben Coulombe, Kai Hendershot, Brylie Nedd, Easton Allen, and others all on our staff we have a lot of student talent that can be the future of the sports industry from TLU that should get their due on this type of platform. I’ll enjoy Vegas and the visit to the NCAA office in Indianapolis that should allow me to bring back more information to keep us at the top of the SCAC from a social content and sports information standpoint.”

Atzger

Carolyn Emma (Hartmann) Atzger, age 79, passed away on March 27, 2024. She was born on December 14, 1944, in Marion, Texas to Edna (Staats) Hartmann and Achilles Hartmann. Carolyn attended school in Marion and graduated in 1963 where she was Salutatorian of her graduating class. On December 14, 1968, she married Eugene Atzger at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin, Texas.

Following high school, Carolyn worked at Sagebiel’s Home & Auto Center from 1963 to 1966. She began a long career in 1966 with Donegan Insurance Agency which later became Barnard-Donegan Insurance. Her keen sense of accountability served the agency well as she meticulously managed the financial records for 45 years. Carolyn was not afraid to embrace technology when the agency transitioned from hard copy records to the digital age. She enjoyed learning more about technology, even beyond retirement.

She made many friends in the community being an active member of the St. James School and Church community. She served on the PTA for many years and there was not one field trip or class party she missed while Tricia, her daughter, attended St. James School. Following her retirement, Carolyn remained active in the church community by helping count weekly contributions and participating in other various parish functions. She also participated in the TOPS Chapter #1201 for many years.

Carolyn and Gene enjoyed traveling and camping. Some of her favorite trips were to Branson, Missouri, and Alpine, Texas. She also cherished her granddaughters, Tylynn and Campbell. Omie, as they called her, enjoyed sewing them dresses when they were young. They were known to call her requesting a new dress in their recent favorite colors. Carolyn always looked forward to spending time with the girls during their summer vacations and providing them the opportunity to attend local summer

Nick P. Evola, Jr, age 84, of Geronimo, Texas passed away on March 26, 2024. Nick was born on October 13, 1939, in Independence, Louisiana to Lena Evola Barcia (Noto) & Nick P. Evola, Sr.

Nick or “Mr. Nick” (if you were younger) grew in Independence, graduated high school, and joined the Army where he served as a nurse in Ft. Dix, New Jersey. After marrying the love of his life, Marena J. Schubert Evola, they moved back to Louisiana, then to Texas where they settled in Geronimo in 1972.

Nick was a social person & enjoyed getting out and about, meeting new friends, serving in the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department as an EMT & Firefighter, being involved in the Catholic Church (serving as usher & Eucharist minister), working at the hospital as a surgical tech (Christus Santa Rosa & Guadalupe Valley

camps at the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. She also enjoyed hearing about her great-grandchildren’s milestones and receiving many pictures of them on her digital frame.

Carolyn was also known for her love of baking, especially her homemade pecan pies made with the fresh pecans harvested from their yard. Friends often requested her pies when they traveled to Schulenberg during the Thanksgiving holidays. For the longest time, Tricia thought the recipe was an heirloom family recipe – only to find out later that the recipe was on the back of the Karo syrup bottle.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents and survived by her husband of 55 years, Eugene Atzger; daughter, Tricia (Gregory) John; granddaughters, Tylynn (Maverick) Culp, and Campbell (Brandon) Day; great-grandchildren, Cooper Day, Caspar, Io, and Seren Culp.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Friday, April 5, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Gregory J. Nevlud officiating. Entombment will follow in the St. James Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Michael McFarland, Tom Sedlacek, Brandon Allen, Brandon Day, Maverick Culp, and Erich Strey. The family is greatly appreciative of the love and support of their family and friends for the many phone calls, visits, and cards. Altherr

Frances Lillian Kluth Altherr, age 82 of Seguin passed away on March 17, 2024. Frances was born on November 12, 1941, in Guadalupe County, Texas to Norma Mary (Stautzenberger) and Erwin Kluth.

In May 1986, Frances (Kluth) Schwarzlose married Paul Altherr and they enjoyed 35 years of marriage together. With their love of God, they shared a beautiful life.

She and Paul faithfully attended St. James Catholic Church, where she participated in Saint Ann’s Circle. They were also members of the American Legion Post #245, where she held many posts in the Ladies Auxiliary. She and Paul loved to go camping and fishing, having many adventures at the state parks. She had a talent for sewing and crocheting, making clothes and blankets for her family. She was a fabulous cook, making delicious holiday meals and family dinners. She also loved gardening, enjoying many plants and flowers in and around their home. But most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, handing down her many talents and creating precious memories.

Frances is preceded in death by her loving husband Paul Altherr, her

parents, sisters, Joyce Koepsel and Clara Brownfield, and a baby brother.

Margie Lee Schomer, age 69 of Seguin, passed away on March 31, 2024. Margie was born on October 30, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas to Celia Ann (Plosczynski) and Melvin Preston Easley. She met her husband, Michael, in the spring of 1980 and they were married on September 20, 1980. Mike and Margie never traveled much as they spent much of their time working on their homes (moved 15 times) in 44 years. Margie loved to cook and compiled a cookbook of her simple quick recipes. Margie did this cookbook just last year as she received chemotherapy treatments.

She enjoyed her grandkids and she loved Jesus. She taught Sunday school for sixteen years, ministering to hundreds of people she encountered. Margie had a heart of Gold and a spirit of faith that surpassed understanding. Margie always put everyone else first. She was always a comfort to the brokenhearted.

Schomer Carrillo VITAL STATISTICS

Mary Louise G. Carrillo, age 66, of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 28, 2024. Mary was born on February 13, 1958, in Seguin, Texas to Julia M. Guillen and Jose Perez Guillen. Mary attended Seguin High School and graduated in 1977. On January 29, 1982, she married Robert Carrillo Sr. in Seguin, Texas.

Mary was a devoted and caring wife, mom, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. Nothing made her happy that spending time with her family whether it was traveling to the coast and experiencing the outdoors with her husband through the years, having family cookouts at home or the park, and spending time with all her grandchildren. She loved supported her family in all their extracurricular activities, such as dance, football, and various sporting events.

Mary worked at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for 20 years

Margie is preceded in death by her son Jason Schomer, her parents, her brother, Melvin Joseph Easley, her sister, Roseann Hermes, and her husband Kenneth.

Survivors include her loving husband of 44 years, Michael Anthony Schomer; son, Bobby Chase Bailey, and wife Emilie; daughter-in-law, Brandy Schomer; granddaughters, Madison Chase Bailey and Paige Harper Bailey; grandson, Nikolai Hugo Schomer; sisters, Mary Corley and husband Waymon, and Melva Bailey and husband Steve; her beloved dog, Baby Girl; nieces and nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

Gerard A. Adcock, age 89 of Stockdale, passed away on March 28, 2024.

Gerard was born on June 19, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas to Rosalee (Campbell) and Evan Adcock.

Gerard grew up in San Antonio and will be remembered as a graduate of St. Gerard High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Most of Gerard’s career was spent as the Director of Biomedical Repair in both Houston and Victoria.

Gerard was preceded in death by his son, Andy, his parents, and his siblings, Margie, Rosemary, Evelyn, Michele, Doris, and Evan.

Mary Martinez passed away peacefully at home in the loving presence of her family. Mary was born December 23, 1946, in Seguin, Texas to Trinidad (Aguilar) and Valentin Arriola, Sr.

Mary was a blessing to all who were able to know her. She took joy in spending time with her family, baking, shopping trips and just simply working in her garden. Most of all she loved hugs from her husband. She was the founding member of Teatro De Artes.

Bertha Anita Mueller, age 87, of Seguin, Texas, passed away on March 31, 2024. She was born on December 26, 1936, in Houston, Texas, to Herbert and Bertha Mueller. Anita grew up in Tomball, Texas, and graduated from Tomball High School Class of 1955. She attended Massey Business School and later attended the American Institute of Banking.

Anita and Charles were members of Grace Lutheran Church since 1976 and she was a member of the Dorcas Guild at the church.

Anita is preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Charles Walter Mueller, her daughter, Betty Jeanette Mueller, and her parents.

She is survived by her daughter Carrie Mueller; grandchildren Richard Wessels and his bride Maegan, Crockett Wessels and his bride Kaitlyn and Abra Wessels and fiancé Bryan Burns; great-grandchildren Kallie, Jeremiah, Julia, Noah, Scarlet, Hugo, Koltin, Charlie, Daphne, and Jameson; identical twin sister, Betty Juanita Terrell; nieces, Vanita Hodge and husband Richard and Susan Leppard and husband Steve; several great-nieces and several great-nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Kenneth Holder officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Wessels, Crockett Wessels, Koltin Wessels, Charlie Wenner, Richard Hodge, and Lane Hodge.

The Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids has found a new way of treating colorectal cancer by combining two drugs already approved by the FDA. A doctor at the institute said she and her team of experts saw a decrease in tumor growth by combining the drugs.

New Warnings About Heart Pumps Connected To 49 Deaths

(Washington, DC) -- New warnings are out about instructions for a certain type of heart pump that are linked to 49 deaths. The left-sided Impella heart pumps by Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s Abiomed have also been linked to more than 100 serious injuries. The alert urges customers to heed new warnings added to the device’s labels that include information about the risk of heart perforation.

Five Dead After Taking Health Supplements

(Osaka) -- Five people are dead after taking health supplements in Japan. Close to 100 more are in the hospital after consuming supplements with a fermented rice ingredient. Officials believe this ingredient may have caused kidney issues in some of the victims, but the exact cause of the deaths is still being investigated. The company that makes the supplements has recalled its products containing the ingredient. They’re facing backlash for allegedly not warning the public after learning of issues with their products earlier this year.

Bird Flu Has Spread To Dairy Cattle For First Time

(Undated) -- For the first time, bird flu is turning up in dairy cattle. Both the CDC and U.S. Department of Agriculture say they’ve confirmed it in cows from dairy farms in Texas and Kansas. Avian flu has been impacting bird flocks in Europe, Asia and America for the past few years causing illness and death. The cattle findings come just days after goats on a Minnesota firm were diagnosed with bird flu. The U.S. agencies say bird flu in cows should not have a major impact on milk prices because there’s a sufficient dairy supply.

TLU’s Dr. Eric Daub Piano Recital

The Texas Lutheran University will host the second of two recitals celebrating and honoring Dr. Eric Daub’s career as he retires at the end of the school year. Dr. Daub will be featured as a soloist together with friends and the TLU Orchestra in J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Four Pianos and William Grant Still’s Ennango at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21.
