(Seguin) -- The Seguin Police Department says it will remain vigilant in any other future threats or rumors of rioting or disruptive behavior in the city of Seguin. Police Chief Terry Nichols follows up with additional messages to the public following Sunday's threats to loot and destroy local businesses including the Seguin Walmart store. The police department's decision to be proactive instead of reactive to these social media threats apparently worked as they warded

"Unfortunately, we got information through social media that people were planning to not just protest but actually cause damage to some local businesses and we took that very serious. We didn't know whether it was true or not but it got spread throughout the community that they were going to start specifically at Walmart and then march through town and destroy

Now while mass riots and other destructive protests continue across the country, Chief Nichols says he believes he speaks for most people in Seguin when he says that this type of behavior won't be tolerated in this community.

another business and then make their way downtown and we took it very serious and we think the community saw us mobilize -- a lot of police officers, a lot of presence to help to deter that. We are certainly glad that nothing happened. I really feel our community is above that. That there is a way to peacefully protest. We all saw what happened in Minnesota and what's going on around the country and people are rightfully upset and they have the right to protest peacefully and we support that. But what we won't support is any riot behavior, looting in stores, damage in property. We just simply won't tolerate that in any way, shape or form," said Nichols. Nichols says he understands that people are letting their voices be heard and

should continue to protest in peace if that is their desire. However, he says the problem is when other factors come into play that don't help the cause. "I do want the community to know that we are prepared. But, we are also very thankful because we believe Seguin is not like that. Could some folks from out of town come and agitate our local community? They could and we are prepared for that. So, we would just ask the community, please if you see stuff like this, squash it down and tell them, ' Not here. Not in our community. This is our home.' We all live here and the community doesn't want this kind of damage and (riots) behavior going on here," said Nichols. See NICHOLS, page 3
