SWISS ENERGY AND CLIMATE SUMMIT 2017

DIVING INTO THE FUTURE OF ENERGY

Dear participants, I am very happy to welcome you to the 11th Swiss Energy and Climate Summit (SwissECS) in Bern. You can once again look forward to an engaging and diverse programme. In particular, I am personally greatly honoured to welcome Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. As UN Secretary-General from 2007 to 2016, he paved the way for the Paris Agreement as a tireless fighter against the economic challenges, conflicts and waves of migration caused by climate change. You really must see the unique appearance of Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Enjoy the newly-designed Expo Zone and the new elements in the programme, like the “Deep Dive Sessions” or our partners’ “Host Sessions”. Make the most of these inputs, and use SwissECS as a platform for new contacts and creative sharing of ideas on the future of our energy!

BOOST – The future of energy as opportunity 11th Swiss Energy & Climate Summit

It is not only politics and society, but also companies, in particular, along with their technological developments that have a great deal of influence on what the future energy supply, and thus our climate, will look like in the future. If all stakeholders take joint action and are willing to try something new, we will have a bright energy future ahead of us. Now is the time to take advantage of the opportunities available and to actively drive forwards the transition to a new, sustainable approach to energy. This is why the theme of the Swiss Energy and Climate Summit 2017 is “BOOST – The future of energy as opportunity”. The focus is on the will to change and innovation, and faith in the company’s power. Not only will questions be posed and challenges discussed at this year’s instalment of Switzerland’s leading energy and climate conference, but clear answers, strategies and visions will be presented.

Clean Energy Transition: what does this mean for Switzerland? On 21 May 2017, the electorate approved (58%) the revised Energy Act to implement the Energy Strategy 2050. This is the basis for reducing energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy. A panel of representatives of the Federal Government, business and universities and research institutes will discuss how specifically the “Clean Energy Transition” can be implemented and whether achieving the goals will result in the long term in decoupling economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions. After focusing on Switzerland, the panel will move on to analyse developments in Europe.

Export market for clean technology: why is there virtually no growth? Switzerland is one of the most innovative countries worldwide, with excellent universities and outstanding fundamental research. Ideal conditions for being among the leaders in the clean technology industry as well. However, in reality many companies have trouble making that “last mile” and establishing themselves in the export market. The panel will explore this question from different perspectives, presenting lessons learned from other industries.

Transport and mobility

Language: German

Transforming transport We live in the age of mobility. Travel has become a normal part of work and leisure. Goods are quickly transported from one continent to another. Transportation systems are reaching their limits, and the impact on the environment and the climate is clear. More efficient vehicles and car sharing are just part of the solution to these challenges. But what is the future of mobility on a broader scale? What role will driverless vehicles play? Will virtual reality applications mean that we will travel less? What will be the rela-

tionship between energy supply and mobility? And what are your proposals for solutions for the transport system of the future?

Rethink nuclear power The reactor accident in Fukushima in 2011 caused great uncertainty worldwide and raised fundamental questions on the future of nuclear technology. However, for many countries the technology is still an important option for meeting growing demand for energy while at the same time stabilising greenhouse gas emissions. What is the state of research today? How might this change? Are there solutions for urgent questions concerning safety?

The dream of hydrogen Up to the end of the 1990s, the fuel cell was regarded as the technology of the future, after which it faded into oblivion. At the 2017 World Economic Forum, hydrogen experienced a revival with the announcement of the Hydrogen Council of 13 prominent companies. Blockchain – risks and opportunities to energy utilities Blockchain is the new buzzword. The technology has attracted media attention in recent decades primarily in the financial industry. Now, blockchains could also be used in the changing energy sector. The fact that this has long since ceased to be a future scenario is shown by the example of a “community microgrid” in New York, which in April 2016 for the first time handled billing for decentrally generated energy on a blockchain platform. But behind all the euphoria, what exactly is a blockchain? What models are there in the energy supply area, and what barriers need to be overcome? And is blockchain really revo-

Reinvent materials Where production processes and resource consumption are involved, many mainstream business models are based on the linear sequence of production, consumption and disposal. This involves an enormous consumption of resources. The principle of the circular economy shatters this concept and, besides efficient production processes, follows the approach of treating used materials as valuable commodities instead of waste. For example, plastic bottles can be used to produce raw fibres for the clothing industry.

Millennials on the move Millennials have become the largest demographic group in the USA. They have new and different demands on products and services in the areas of working, living and energy. This is due not least to the fact that the application of new technologies is rooted in their DNA, and that there is great awareness of sustainability. How can companies utilise the opportunities offered by this growing generation of consumers? What does this mean specifically for energy utilities? Is the Millennial generation really able to make the future sustainable?

Power systems of the future The balance in the energy system of the future is shifting. All projections indicate that the future belongs to renewable energy, even if the speed and type of change varies from region to region. The trend is being driven by political requirements and massive cost reductions for wind and solar. Integration of variable energy sources poses new challenges to secure operation of electrical grids. We will look at the future of these systems and explore technical requirements and solutions, apparently contradictory trends such as super and micro networks and the new business models made possible by digitisation of the energy system.

Environmental credit crunch Paul Donovan is global chief economist at UBS and a prolific author on economic and environmental questions and nutritional issues. He is known for being able to explain complex relationships in the global economy in a simple manner. In his paper, Donovan first shows how financial loans and indebtedness are making it possible for us to raise our standard of living and consumption at the expense of future generations. He then applies this analogy to the environment. Using resources unsustainably leads to a reduction in living standards in future. Current global economic growth means that the world is using one and a half times more resources than the Earth is able to replenish. Over time, this economic imbalance could lead to a significant

reduction in global standards of living within a generation. Donovan shows the risks and opportunities for the environment and economy, and draws parallels with the 2008 financial crisis. How does the banking industry function, and what are the effects of overindebtedness and a credit squeeze? What are the analogous economic effects of overutilisation of environmental resources? How is ecologically sustainable growth possible?

Electricity supply 2.0 – Capacity markets for supply security The electricity supply of the future requires solutions to ensure security of supply around the clock and throughout the year. Doing so must take into account low electricity prices, the closure of nuclear power stations, the growing need for reinvestment in hydropower and the increasingly uncertain export capability of neighbouring countries. How to manage electricity production capacity to ensure that supply is secure in the long term? BKW is committed to a model based on capacity markets. To put it simply, this involves an additional market for supply security, with a central entity defining and procuring the

Gebäudeversicherung Bern Hurricanes, severe storms or record floods – weather events are becoming increasingly extreme worldwide. And the growing intensity of the events means increasing costs for our country. Gebäudeversicherung Bern (GVB) provides statutory insurance in the Canton of Bern with unlimited coverage for all buildings against fire and natural hazards. Maintaining this coverage in the face of climate change requires new ways of thinking. GVB is meeting the challenges with broader support for the risks through additional insurance and advisory services in its subsidiaries. It is also relying strongly on preventive measures to minimise losses and is engaging at various levels in climate policy. For this reason, GVB is proud to be an initiator and sponsor of SwissECS and to help shape the dialogue
