“Canvas worked well for upper grades. But at the primary level, it had low usage. It wasn’t ideal for capturing authentic student work in a simplified way for young learners. We wanted our students to demonstrate mastery of the TEKS standards and we needed a platform that provided that instruction and evidence.
Deann Thompson, Technology Integration Specialist at Arlington ISD
“Seesaw is the “all-in-one” tool for elementary. It’s a swiss army knife; connecting families, engaging students, and giving teachers creative ways to instruct and assess.
Josh Ehret, Instructional Technology Specialist, Wichita Public Schools
I love that Seesaw allows students to demonstrate learning in multiple ways: manipulative tools, writing, typing, videos! I also love how easy it is to share their learning as well as messages and photos with parents.
Laura Snow, LMS And Instructional Technology Coach, Ozark North Elementary
“There are other products out there that can do parts of what Seesaw can do, but not all in one platform.
Kristen Meharra, Plano ISD, Elementary Social Studies Coordinator
“The ease of implementation was really attractive. The connection to Clever was a big help, as was the fact that Seesaw works equally well across multiple platforms like Chromebooks or iPads.
Steve Simpson, Digital Curriculum Team, Beaverton School District
What I love most about my experience with Seesaw is that I have one place for student work, assessments, communication, and making connections.

Plano ISD Uses Seesaw to Support Student & Family Engagement
District Snapshot

Students receive English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services
Plano Independent School District (PISD), a large and diverse suburban district in Texas, serves approximately 47,000 students across a wide spectrum of backgrounds. With nearly 40% of students qualifying for Title funding and 30% classified as Emergent Bilingual, the district is committed to delivering equitable, engaging, and high-quality learning opportunities for all.
That commitment is reflected in its strategic plan, which emphasizes academic growth, student engagement, safety and wellness, and strong family and community partnerships.
To support these goals PISD turned to Seesaw—a platform that enhances instruction, empowers students, and enables schools to build meaningful connections with families Pre-K through 5th grade.
For elementary educators, Seesaw offers a solution to a common challenge: how to see what students are learning during independent or small-group stations.
“Without tools like Seesaw, students are often limited to recording their learning on paper, if they’re recording it at all,” said Dr. Ashley Davis, Director of Elementary Academic Services. “Seesaw is a quick way for teachers to see what students are learning.”
Seesaw allows students to demonstrate their learning through multimodal tools—recorded voice, drawings, written reflections—which not only bring their thinking to life but also allow teachers to better support and differentiate instruction.
Geralyn Hendrick, a Mathematics Instructional Specialist, emphasized how the platform supports both learning and efficiency in the classroom: “The use of the multimodal tools provide valuable insight into students’ thinking and understanding for the teacher. It can save teachers instructional time to work directly with students while others are working independently on Seesaw.”
In a district where 30% of students are Emergent Bilinguals and families speak many languages, creating strong home-school connections is essential. Plano ISD staff consistently share that Seesaw’s communication tools are one of its most transformative features.
“It’s just such a great way for families to be involved in a way that we don’t see with any other programs,” said Dr. Davis. “If students use the voice tool, family members can hear their kid’s voice. They can comment on student work. Seesaw brings families into the classroom.”
Lilly Jensby, a Digital Learning Specialist and second language learner herself, highlighted the platform’s impact on parent relationships: “To me, I think it’s the language part that really brings in the parents. That seamless
communication between families and teachers is powerful. And we know that has a high impact on student success.”
Teachers in PISD benefit from both the flexibility and the structure that Seesaw offers. They can create custom lessons, choose from an extensive content library, or access lessons pushed out centrally from the curriculum team—ensuring alignment to TEKS and instructional consistency across classrooms. “I like that we can create lessons at the curriculum level and push it out across the district,” said Dr. Davis. “We can assure that it’s aligned to the TEKS and the style that we want.”
Kristen Meharra, Elementary Social Studies Coordinator, noted how Seesaw simplifies lesson creation while keeping communication at the forefront.
There are other products out there that can do parts of what Seesaw can do, but not all in one platform.
Plano ISD educators emphasized how Seesaw supports student agency, creativity, and differentiation—all essential for a diverse student population. Students can choose how to show what they know—whether through writing, drawing, voice recordings, or video—giving them autonomy in how they express their learning. “It’s a two-way thing,” said Jensby. “Teachers gain insight into student learning, and students gain flexibility in how they share that learning.”
As with any successful district-wide initiative, implementation mattered. Dr. Davis stressed the importance of setting clear expectations and ensuring stakeholders understood the “why” behind the tool. “If we’re investing funds into this product, everyone involved needs to know what it can do,” she said. Jensby added, “You’ve got to have the support of the stakeholders before you get the momentum for the feet-on-the-ground action that has to take place to roll this out district-wide.”
Today, Seesaw aligns with Plano ISD’s strategic priorities by:
• Enhancing visibility into student thinking and growth across elementary classrooms
• Supporting multilingual family engagement and strong home-school relationships
• Providing equitable learning opportunities for diverse student populations
• Offering flexible tools for teacher-created, curriculum-aligned instruction
As PISD educators put it, Seesaw brought a “Trifecta” of Impact: through engaging lessons, student thinking, and family visibility. Seesaw is more than a tool—it’s a bridge between students, teachers, and families, helping bring learning to life in every classroom.

Arlington ISD Elevates Early Learning through Quality Instruction and Family Engagement with Seesaw

55,000 Students
When Arlington Independent School District (AISD), an urban district and one of the largest and most diverse in Texas, transitioned to standards-based report cards for its youngest learners, it needed more than just a digital platform—it needed a purpose-built solution that aligned with its instructional vision, supported new reporting structures, and provided equitable access to high-quality learning experiences.
With nearly 53,000 students across Pre-K through 12th grade, and over 30% of students identified as limited English proficient, AISD’s commitment to personalized learning, student achievement, equitable access, and social-emotional well-being is foundational to its strategic plan. Recognizing that younger students learn best through interactive, developmentally appropriate platforms, AISD selected Seesaw as its learning management system for grades Pre-K through 2. AISD previously used one LMS at all grade levels K-12, but engagement in primary grades was low. Seesaw was a better fit for early learners, offering an intuitive, student-friendly interface compatible with the iPads and touch Chromebooks used in those grades.
“Canvas worked well for upper grades. But at the primary level, it had low usage. It wasn’t ideal for capturing authentic student work in a simplified way for young learners. We wanted our students to demonstrate mastery of the TEKS standards and we needed a platform that provided that instruction and evidence.
When COVID-19 disrupted schools and rapidly shifted instruction online, Seesaw’s flexibility became a lifeline, as AISD already had the platform set up and teachers had been trained. Seesaw quickly became central to AISD’s remote learning strategy and a foundational tool for teacher-parent communication during the shutdown.
But as instruction returned to in-person, AISD began investing in Seesaw’s Lessons, which helped fill a major need—especially for substitute teachers or those with less classroom experience. Many of AISD’s “bridge teachers,” who are completing certification programs, often need more structured support. Seesaw Lessons have filled this gap with ready-made, TEKS-aligned, high-quality lessons and activities that are consistent across grade levels and content areas.
Seesaw Lessons are TEKS-aligned, high quality, and our teachers don’t have to spend time worrying if they’re teaching to the right standard. They know they are.
Deann Thompson, Technology Integration Specialist at AISD
“Our teachers don’t compromise on rigor,” said Thompson.
Lessons remain a cornerstone of instructional planning at the primary level. The district regularly highlights new lesson offerings through a six-week newsletter, making it easy for educators to stay current.
Arlington ISD is leveraging Seesaw’s digital portfolios as a powerful tool to document student growth and showcase evidence of learning over time. As a district using standards-based report cards, it was essential for teachers to collect and organize consistent, ongoing evidence of student progress. “Seesaw provided that evidence and yearly growth,” shared Thompson.
Seesaw offers the district an intuitive, centralized space where teachers can capture and store student work throughout the year. The platform allows educators to align student submissions to specific standards, making it easier to reflect on growth, guide instruction, and communicate learning progress with families and administrators.
During remote learning, Seesaw became AISD’s required platform for teacher-family communication— and the results were remarkable. Engagement was high as families could see their child’s work in real time, offer encouragement, and stay connected.
However, once in-person instruction resumed and Seesaw communication was no longer required, family engagement began to decline. AISD responded by implementing Seesaw’s “Family Syncing” feature, which connects families to their child’s digital portfolio and updates. “With Family Sync, we’re seeing that family engagement increase,” said Thompson. “Now, when concerns arise—whether a child is struggling or excelling—it’s not a surprise. Families have visibility into what their child is doing every day.”
The platform’s impact on student motivation is also clear:
Deann Thompson, Technology Integration Specialist at AISD “
When their family members are able to make comments and celebrate their work, the students know—hey, my mom or my dad will see this and I want to do my best work. It’s not just for me or my teacher.
This
home-to-school transparency has especially benefited a district as economically and linguistically diverse as AISD, with families who may otherwise face barriers to engaging with traditional school communication methods.
AISD’s student population includes over 6,400 students receiving special education services and tens of thousands with varied cultural, linguistic, and academic needs. Seesaw’s built-in flexibility has made it a powerful tool for differentiation, allowing teachers to assign content to individual students or groups based on need.
We have so many students with different needs and accommodations. Every class is different, and Seesaw lets teachers adapt accordingly. They can assign one activity to the whole class or customize it for a specific student—and that’s critical in a district like ours.
Deann Thompson, Technology Integration Specialist at AISD
Today, Seesaw continues to align with AISD Strategic Plan by:
• Supporting personalized, high-quality instruction for early learners
• Equipping new and substitute teachers with rigorous, TEKS-aligned lessons
• Enhancing family engagement through transparent communication
• Providing equitable access and differentiation across a highly diverse student population
From the challenges of pandemic-era instruction to today’s focus on instruction, engagement, and equity, Arlington ISD’s journey with Seesaw is a powerful example of how the right tools—used intentionally—can transform teaching and learning for all.

Empowering Teachers to Evaluate, Differentiate and Communicate Efficiently
“As a company dedicated to supporting the unique needs of young learners, we are committed to implementing AI in a thoughtful, responsible manner that prioritizes the safety, well-being, and developmental needs of our students. We are working closely with schools and educators to harness the power of this technology to create more inclusive, joyful learning environments that foster growth and a love for learning.”
Matthew Given Chief Executive Officer, Seesaw
Seesaw was founded to support the unique needs of early learners with a platform that gives teachers tools to support their diverse classrooms, empowers students to showcase their learning in a variety of ways, and engages families in their child’s learning process. Over the past decade, Seesaw has grown into a global Learning Experience Platform that is trusted and loved by 25 million educators, students, and families and in over 150 countries. At the heart of our philosophy is the commitment to supporting joyful and connected learning experiences for our youngest learners.
As artificial intelligence (AI) begins to influence education, we recognize the potential benefits and risks of integrating this emerging technology into elementary classrooms. It is essential for edtech companies – especially those serving our youngest learners – to approach the use of AI in elementary education with thoughtfulness, transparency, and a commitment to protecting the privacy of students.
Seesaw is committed to the responsible use of AI in its products and services. The purpose of this report is to articulate Seesaw’s approach to AI in elementary education, focusing on three essential principles that are fundamental to every aspect of our work:
1
Provide transparency on how AI will be incorporated into the Seesaw platform:
Seesaw will continue to clearly communicate where we integrate AI into its products, emphasizing the ways in which AI will be used to empower educators and enhance student learning experiences.
2
Ensure the safety and age-appropriateness of AI features for elementary students:
In partnership with educators, Seesaw will carefully evaluate the risks and benefits of AI for young learners, implementing only those features that are safe, developmentally appropriate, and conducive to student learning. We will continue to maintain the highest standards when it comes to student safety and privacy.
3
Empower educators and keep a human in the loop: We are building AI to support – rather than replace – the critical role of teachers. We also believe adults are key to Seesaw and are committed to keeping an adult in the loop whenever AI is used, ensuring that students’ experiences remain safe, equitable, and guided by human judgment.
Seesaw’s ethos has always been centered around strengthening and expanding the learning loop between administrators, teachers, students, and families. Our AI-powered products align with this philosophy, aiming to make teaching and learning more joyful, inclusive, and connected for the entire school community.
AI is not going to replace human teachers or family members. We believe that AI’s potential lies in giving educators more time to do what they do best – support their students’ diverse learning needs. By empowering educators with AI-enhanced tools and resources, Seesaw supports their efforts in creating engaging and effective learning environments. In practice, this includes the following:
When AI is used, there is an adult in the loop to ensure students’ experience in Seesaw is safe and equitable. Students do not have access to generative AI features, like Chatbots or text generators.
Educators have the opportunity to review and edit any content generated by AI (e.g., edit an assessment before it’s shared to students or override a grade generated from a machine voice transcription).
Safety, Privacy and Abuse Prevention:
All AI applications adhere to Seesaw’s industry-leading safety, privacy and abuse prevention policies.
Disclose Use of AI:
When AI is used, we disclose it in the product and our Help Center.
Consent:
We will not use your data for training our AI models without your consent.
“I think the most immediate benefit of AI is the time saving it can provide for teachers in their lesson planning. The examples I’ve seen around differentiation, scaffolding, question design, etc. are quite amazing! As far as the use by elementary students, I am more reluctant, but I think we will see some very exciting advancements in adaptive learning personalized to student needs, so I’m enthusiastic about that. Some of the image generators have interesting possibilities within lesson design as well.”
Justin Huntley Curriculum Administrator Technology, Eugene 4J School District
Seesaw will use AI to support educators and enhance the learning experience for elementary students. By integrating AI-powered features into its platform, Seesaw aims to create a more efficient, personalized, and engaging learning environment that caters to the unique needs of young learners. You will see AI show up in our products in several ways:
Translation between 100+ languages:
Seesaw uses machine translation powered by Google Translate to make messages, text comments, text captions, and notes accessible in over 100 languages, promoting inclusivity and communication within the school community.
Question Assistant:
Seesaw’s Question Assistant allows teachers to search for and create formative assessment questions that can be used to gauge student understanding and identify areas for improvement.
Reading Fluency Assessment:
Launching in August 2024, this tool will analyze student reading recordings, providing teachers with valuable data on accuracy, words correct per minute, and specific reading challenges. Teachers will have the ability to override machine-generated accuracy scores to ensure fair evaluations.
Launching in August 2024, this feature will leverage AI to create narrated passages with word-level highlighting, supporting emerging readers by reinforcing the connection between spoken and written language.
By adhering to these commitments across every aspect of our work, we believe we can establish the gold standard for the safe, equitable and effective use of AI with young students. We understand that the most powerful educational technology is useless if it isn’t safe, and we still believe that the best learning experiences take place between students, educators and families. We welcome ongoing feedback and dialogue from educators, families, and the wider educational community as it continues to navigate the evolving landscape of AI in education.
