Raising the bar on performance in the boardroom

A high performing board is a pre-requisite to business success and being a director brings about a requirement to both acquire and update skills and knowledge. This change involves onerous responsibilities in law that are quite different to those of a manager and the duties can, if breached, result in potentially unlimited liabilities for the individual director.

“Board readiness is a real competitive business and career advantage for those serious enough to join this innovative and unique programme.”

Formal director training will help you to understand the legal implications of the role and the responsibilities of directors and company boards. Director training may even act as mitigation if things do go wrong, in that it can be demonstrated that reasonable steps had been taken to ensure a director had taken the time to equip themselves with the skills needed as required by the Companies Act 2006. It is simply not on to say, for example, “I didn’t understand the accounts” – His Honour is likely to retort that you should – and that if you were unsure you should have made efforts to do something about it! Beyond the 2006 Act, The Institute of Directors have, in the last year, published a set of Governance Principles for Unlisted Companies and SMEs and one of the basic 9 principles states “All directors should receive an induction on joining the board and should regularly update and refresh their skills and knowledge”.

It is towards reaching these principles that Direct2Success has been developed and takes into account the need for not just the right skills and knowledge, but the ability to apply those with corresponding attitudes and behaviours that enhances ‘director-as-leader’, as well as staff performance. So with the right kind of development, it is the board that sets the example to colleagues and by raising its own game helps to ensure the continued success and profitability of the company. Become part of the unique Business Solent Direct2Success programme and experience the difference!
