COVER STORY

Ranbir Kapoor: The reason for me being an actor is Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan's films

Kapoor! A licence to entertain. The first family of filmdom. Cinematic royalty itself...Johar! An expert on jewels. Master craftsman. Can weave gems into set pieces and celluloid art... It takes one to sparkle the other. The gemstone needs the facets of the storyteller. The jeweller needs a stone to polish into his weaving of stories. They complete each other. So forKaran Johar, life comes a full circle after growing up on Rishi Kapoor's histrionics in 'Chandni' and for Ranbir Kapoor, it's back to playing the eternal lover after a series of experimental frames in tepidity. While for Karan, 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' ('ADHM') was "liberating", Ranbir was "deeply moved". The two are a crackling combo, like you will just find out. So read on for a fiery, witty, candid dialogue. With coffee, confessions and more... Ranbir, you have said that you play Karan Johar in the film. Is it true? RK: Well, Karan had a very personal connect to the story and my character (Ayan). I am sure he's been heartbroken many times in his life. I don't really know the details, but the heartbreak and the pain felt real. There's a lot of pain behind the smile and humour that you see in Karan Johar. When he narrated the story, I was deeply moved and I knew that I wanted to do it — apart from the fact that he is Karan Johar and every actor wants to work with him. So, even if it was a bad script, I would still do his film. KJo: All the characters that I have projected before 'ADHM' have come out of my views, travels and observations. This one felt deeply personal, there are scenes, I have to accept, that have happened with me. Perhaps, even the conflict of the film is derived

from my life, though this story is nowhere close to a true story. I want to clearly say that this film is not about infidelity. It is not a film that will question your morality, but your sense of love. Ranbir, are you the kind of actor who goes very deep into the character of your film? To the point of isolating yourself to prep for a role? RK: No, I think it all comes from the filmmaker. Everything is in the script, everything has been thought out. Between action and cut - that's the life you live. I am too lazy to become a method actor or go into the entire process of living a part. I did that with 'Rockstar', as that's the only film that demanded it, considering I don't have any connect with music. I can't sing or play an instrument. I had to prep for it. Other than that, I really haven't surrendered to a character so much.

Karan, given that the film is so personal, you must have emotionally invested the most in this? KJo: Well, I have come to a juncture where I am making a personal film and I also feel the most liberated. It takes a phase in your life for you to really tackle your inner self and tell a story. Before that you have so many layers, sometimes you are acting, sometimes you are putting up pretences within the industry and saying things because you are expected to. Finally, at 44, I have reached a point where two things happen either you hit a mid-life crisis or you feel liberated. So when I am asked why I am dancing on a reality show, why I am pouting in a selfie - it doesn't matter to me. I feel alive, active and relevant. Today, when a tenyear-old kid recognises me and says he loved 'Student of the Year', I am thrilled because I am a part of his pop culture and it makes me feel alive. Today, Ranbir Kapoor is a close friend of mine. He is a decade younger to me, but we talk like friends. He doesn't talk up to me and I don't talk down to him. Have you ever felt that the actors you have worked with have taken you for granted, as most of them are your friends? KJo: Taking somebody for granted is just so passe. Taking yourself seriously is so passe. Believing and achieving is what’s important today. I always feel that it’s the middle order of the world that actually has all the complexes. When you are a failure, you have nothing to lose, but just go up. When you are an achiever, you have nothing to fear. There are a lot of filmmakers of my age who take their role very seriously. Sometimes, seeing them, I feel maybe even I should play-act being a director. But I guess it’s just not me. Ranbir, you met Aishwarya (Rai Bachchan) for the first time when you were 15, right? Romancing her on-screen must have been different? RK: Yes. When you meet Aishwarya, her eyes glitter. She doesn’t have to try; she doesn’t have to do anything, yet, at the same time, she does a lot. The first time she walked onto the set, I asked Karan, ‘What should I do? Should I go and say hello to her?’ I didn’t know how to approach her.

KJo: (laughs)...There was so much build-up about Ash coming on set. To me, it felt like she is the only star in the film. I am not undermining my love for Ranbir and Anushka (Sharma), but when Aishwarya walked in, I was like OMG... one star has finally come on the set. Karan, you say that Ranbir is very casual about his stardom... KJo: Yes, and I love that about him. And I am so glad that I am almost indifferent to his indifference. His approach to life is so much like mine. Both of us don't take ourselves too seriously. He is the easiest actor to work with. He's always on time, knows his lines and brings the X-factor to every scene. Usually, I have three 'Wow' moments on a set, this time I had around 20. And it's not like I wept and hugged him. Ranbir has never told me that I have made a good film and I have never told him that he's given a great performance. We don't talk like that. RK: Anushka and I told Karan that he has to give us ten pounds every time we gave a good shot. KJo: No Ranbir, the dare was fifty pounds! How did you react when Ranbir said that you are a legend? KJo: I am not a legend and he has not said it. RK: ( laughs) This word actually has been planted in my brain by Karan. KJo: It's also me making fun of myself. On the sets of 'Student of the Year', I asked Sid (Sidharth Malhotra), Varun (Dhawan) and Alia (Bhatt),'How do you feel a legend is directing you?' I also have a chair that was gifted by my production team, with 'legend' written on it. I mean, who does that? It's actually a take-off on the people who take themselves seriously. I am no legend and I am nowhere close to it and I don't want to be one because I associate legend with age (laughs). Ranbir has expressed that someday he would want to direct a film. Karan, do you think he will make a good director? KJo: Not at all. I don’t want him to direct, he is too good an actor, why stand behind a camera when you are so brilliant in front of it. There’s no reason yaar, hamare pet par kyun laat maar rahein ho?

Well, Karan maybe you should direct more films then... KJo: I completely agree with you and I really want to. It's partly because I do so much else, and also I think the biggest reason why most directors take so long is their fear of failure. We are so nervous about holding on and maintaining our equity. I am very afraid of failure. I am afraid of failing not just for me, but also for the people who have joined the ride with me. God forbid, if a film of mine failed, I would feel more accountable than upset. What was your reaction when you saw Ranbir in his debut film ‘Saawariya’? KJo: It was #Instantlove. It was unabashed, unapologetic love. Mostly, you see young actors with raw edges in their first film. Here, you had a completely fleshed out great chip of, what we can call the legendary block. RK: He was the first producer to offer me a film after the disaster of ‘Saawariya’. So, he had faith in me from the start. Ranbir, which is your favourite Karan Johar film? RK: ‘ Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. Of course, it sounds like a selfish answer, but honestly, the reason for me being an actor is Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar’s films. I was in the 7th grade when I saw ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, it was at the time when you are getting interested in girls and you want to flirt with them. In my head, I had embodied the character of Rahul. I bought the cool pendant and the polo neck tees. We thought that the world of romance and how to woo a girl is like this. When ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ released, I was studying in New York. I went for the first night show in Times Square, the theatre was packed and I had to sit on the floor. These two films have really impacted my notions about a lot of feelings in life. Next was ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, though I was never really a very big fan of that film. KJo: It’s sheer coincidence that I grew up wearing the kind of sweaters his father (Rishi Kapoor) would wear. I would tell my father (Yash Johar) to buy me the sweaters that Rishi Kapoor wore in ‘Chandni’. I

would wear them even in the heat of Mumbai. I was obsessed with Rishi Kapoor. I grew up wanting to be like Ranbir’s dad and I used to perform to every song of ‘Chandni’. I wonder if that is the reason why I reacted the way I did to Ranbir. Karan, your favourite Ranbir Kapoor film? KJo: 'Barfi'!. I had a cardiac arrest while watching that film. I was weeping more than the entire cinema put together. There was like this Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati coming out of my eyes. I was moved by his performance in the film, and I loved the entire cast and Anurag Basu's work. There's a reason that I didn't watch 'Besharam', I knew he wouldn't be good in it. I don't want to watch a bad Ranbir film. I have not seen it and I turn it off even now when it comes on TV. How do you both deal with failure? RK: I have been a part of a lot of films, which have failed at the box-office. I remember Karan came to my house the day 'Bombay Velvet' released, and he sat on the couch and said... 'Well, you are f****d now. What are you going to do?' And that's about it. We moved on from there. Karan was a very important person when my whole failure phase was on. He's always shown me the real picture. KJo: When a film is a mid-level success, it bothers me more than extreme failure. When it’s the former, you don’t know what you are learning. Was the timing galat , or is that the film didn’t reach its optimum? Fortunately, one quality that I have is that I’m not delusional. I almost always know when a film is not going to work. I always see the failure coming. I have told filmmakers, ‘Listen, this film is not going to work, but now let’s get out and tell the world that it is working and build that energy around it’. Karan, do you want to act again? KJo: Can you please tell the whole world out there that I really want to act again? So what if it didn’t work the first time? I am not being offered any roles. RK: What kind of characters would you like to play Karan? Like, would you play Rajat Kapoor’s role in ‘Kapoor & Sons’ (Since 1921)? KJo: Yes, I would, though I think I’m a little young for it. Nobody is coming to me with these roles. I want to refuse a role at least once in my life; I am not being given that option. I want to act in one hit film and then maybe I will retire.

Ranbir, what do you have to say about Karan being a fashion icon? RK: Honestly, I believe that I am ten times more fashionable than Karan. There was a point and shift in our friendship when he started copying the brands that I wore (laughs). There was a time when I looked up to his fashion sense, but right now, I am 10 steps ahead of him. Okay, let’s say if not ahead, equal to him. Earlier, he would judge my fashion sense a lot, we would joke about it. But that has changed. Now, I do that to him because he repeats his clothes, like four days in a row. Karan, really??? KJo: Yes, only sometimes at work. But I really feel that there is no reason for some people to not make an effort to look good. Sometimes, people just wear things that don’t compliment them. If you are walking the red carpet, it doesn’t mean that you look like one. Power to Sonam Kapoor, she changed the whole game of red carpet in our country. Alia, too. For me, being fashionable is a multi-billion dollar business. Sidharth, Alia and Varun get messages from me all the time, with screen grabs asking them why they have worn a certain outfit. RK: While we were shooting, I have seen messages on his phone from other actors asking if they should wear this or that to the airport. cost of the tickets. It is more important than where you are going or what you are doing. I am just saying there is going to be paparazzi, so get your airport look right. And if you have so much of a problem, then take the train!

Aamir Khan’s Dangal will follow the success of his past movies – here’s why we say so

Dangal

Global Movie

Aamir Khan’s Dangal which releases in December will follow the success of his previous movies and we know why Let’s not deny that Aamir Khan’s Dangal was one of the most awaited movies of this year after Salman Khan’s Sultan and Shah Rukh Khan’s Dear Zindagi. The movie which is abiopic based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, will see Aamir essaying the lead role and comparisons between him and Salman are bound to be drawn. However there should not be any reasons to worry for the actor. First, Salman’s movie wasn’t a biopic and second, Dangal and Sultan are way different from each other. Yes we agree that Aamir had changed his marketing plans after the Salman’s release and it’s popularity, we can assure you that this movie shall be one of the best and well acclaimed ones of this year. While we can understand the actor’s anxiety as his movie is nearing it’s release, we all would like to tell him that the success of this movie should not bother him at all. We justsaw the trailer and it has left us awestruck. Just as Salman Khan has had a success ratio with all his Eid releases and Shah Rukh Khan has with Diwali, the same connection Aamir Khan shares with Christmas and the month of December. It’s as if all the three Khans of Bollywood have already declared their lucky charm and this prove true in most of their cases. Salman Khan started his ‘Eid’mania with Prabhudeva’s 2009 hit movieWanted, Aamir did it with his debut production movie Taare Zameen Par in 2007. Since then these stars book the same slot every year in advance just so that they don’t disappoint their audience and also to not jinx this so called luck factor.f 61 crores, Ghajini was close to 115 crores. His highly acclaimed movie 3 Idiots earned Rs 202 crores followed by Dhoom 3 with Rs 284 crores. Yes the numbers are this huge that could make anyone faint. However this was just the beginning for actor. His last release PK, collected a whopping amount of Rs 340 crores and the number is no joke. With all such great releases in the same month of December, Dangal’s bound to work. Aamir has invested two years of his career in this project and from this we could very well imagine what efforts he has put behind it. Already a known perfectionist, Aamir Khan has ensured that nothing goes wrong with this and seeing the history and records of his movies, we can bet that Dangal will surpass all the previous records held by not just Aamir but any other actor in the past.

Daler Mahendi dedicates a song each to Shah Rukh, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar and they are bang on

We met the Aren’t we all smitten by the title track of Mirzya? Daler Mahendi’s energetic voice and Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy’s beautiful composition had made this number an instant hit amongst the masses. This was not the first time Daler Mahendi was singing for director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra or even for the music composers. He has done it in the past for movies like Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhag. We believe they are a hit jodi which can never go wrong when it comes to their music composition. It is still a delight to hear this singer. He still sticks to his roots and that’s what sets him apart from the rest. Folk music, which is slowly diminishing, is still alive be it in mediocre way and the credit for this goes to all talented singers like him. Mirzya singer for an elaborate chat and to be honest, we did have a lot of fun, interacting with him. It was good to know what he feels about the music these days. According to him, “The music industry has undergone a major change for the past 2-3 years. There is no soul to the songs or music these days. Whichever song comes, it’s a hit for a week or so and later it fades away. I am glad that Mirzya took a different approach and this is the reason why it’s music is So just out of curiosity, we asked him to dedicate one song for our Bollywood actors which he feels suits them aptly. The reason behind this was to know what kind of music or songs does he prefer since he is not satisfied with the current lot. We expected him to pick any song available today but he chose to stick to his own numbers. So which song will he dedicate to current sensation Ranbir Kapoor and he says, Har taraf tera jalwa, considering how popular he is with the girls. Next was Akshay Kumar and we knew the answer obviously. He picked Tenu ghodi kine chadhaya bhutni ke from the actor’s movie, Singh is King. The best reply was for King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan. The actor has even danced to this song with his Indian premiere league team, Kolkatta Knight Riders. This is still the song for which we remember the singer even today. The song is tunak tunak tun tara ra . He feels that if SRK actually acts in a video on this song, he will recreate it in the best way possible. What will be his choice for Salman Khan and he chooses, ho gayi teri balle balle. Interesting isn’t it? Did you notice the fact that Daler Mahendi actually has a song apt for every actor’s personality? Impressive indeed!

Kalki Don’t

Koechlin on Pakistani actors: want to add fuel to fire Kalki Koechlin, who has been busy shooting for her films, has kept mum all this while about the sidelining of Pakistani actors in Bollywood and says she doesn't want to add fuel to the fire. "I don't want to add fuel to the fire because this thing has been going on for a long time. I personally think that we live in an international world and we have Indians living all over the world. If we asked all those NRIs to come back to India, then we would have nowhere to put them," Kalki said. "So, similarly, if there are guests from other countries living in our country, myself included, who is of French origin but born and bought up in India, where do I belong? If I don't belong in this country, then I don't know where I belong to. So, I think it's very important to understand that," she added. Post the Uri attack, tensions between India and Pakistan have taken an ugly turn, following which a debate has raged on whether Pakistani actors should be banned from working in India. Meanwhile, the actress, who is also associated with online home decor magazine Beautifulhomes.com, says she loves Sussanne Khan's house. Asked of all celebrity friends whose house she found beautiful and why, she said: "... I think Sussanne Khan's taste is amazing; she has a natural eye for things and she has a airy-fairy quality also. She has these little details like garden norms, fairies which I really find quirky and nice." Beautifulhomes.com, the quintessential e-decor magazine, was launched on Wednesday evening in the presence of actor Kalki Kochelin. Talking about her association with beautifulhomes.com, she said: "This is my first association with beautifulhomes and I just bought a beautiful home for myself this year. "For the first time I have a house of my own and its a very exciting thing ofcourse and I think what is great about beautiful homes is that they make is very personal, they really work towards getting your home as per your personality and its affordable, for the common person, it's a one point stop where you can do everything. "Its really hard to get a home together, so many different aspects go into it. There is contractor, there an electrician, there is a painter, there is this and there is that, and this is one stop where you can find all of it."

KATRINA KAIF: I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT MY PERSONAL LIFE Katrina Kaif speaks about her upcoming films, working with Akshay Kumar once again and why she wouldn’t want to talk about her break up with Ranbir Kapoor…

NOVEMBER 2016

Global Movie

Katrina Kaif is taking it easy for now. She is finding her work-life balance even as she figures out which films she wants to work on. While there are reports that the actress has signed her second film with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, Raat Baaki the actress hasn’t confirmed the news. Meanwhile, her fans want to see her opposite old favourites Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Here, the actress talks about upcoming films and the possibilities, thereof. Read on…. I have never spoken about films that aren’t confirmed or that I’m not doing. If you ask me at the moment, if there’s a film, I would say no. There’s no confirmation from my end. Exactly what happened, which talks with who — I have never spoken about it. It’s not professional You’ve done multi-heroine films. Would you like to do a film only with actresses? The film has to be good. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was a film where three amazing actors, big stars came together and had no problem because the script was amazing. Tomorrow, if a similar film on girls comes up, I don’t think anyone will have a problem. Alia said she wants to do a female version of Dil Chahta Hai with you… But that means, there will be one more person in it. I think a better film for me and Alia to do would be Thelma & Louise. Alia has spoken out about how publicly talking about relationships takes away from your work. Agree? Since I have come into the industry, I have been saying the same thing. So it’s been that many years for me when I have said I don’t want to talk about my personal life. There’s not just one reason. I will always maintain that, for me, it is the right thing to do. Do you plan to venture into production anytime soon? I don’t have any concrete plans. I am trying to do justice to everything that I have on my plate. Maybe if I have time, then I might have the head space to venture into something.

You haven’t done a film with Akshay for a while… I don’t plan my career in that manner. Also, from the beginning, I have been always like this. I have just gone for what I felt was the right project or film for me. Whether it was doing a film with Salman Khan or with Imran Khan or whether it was John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh for New York or Apne with the Deols, I have always moved. Then there was Raajneeti with Ajay Devgn. I have just gone with my own feelings and instincts.ZNMD was a completely different film being made at that time. I just looked at the directors to do the film and went by the script. I am not planning or strategising and that’s how I continue to be. Definitely, there was a time when my focus on the sets was a little less and I have seen that phase too. Then I reminded myself that you have to be ‘present’ when you are on a film set. You can’t let your concentration lapse. You have just opened a Facebook account. Are you becoming more social and outgoing in a way? Yes, I am very reserved and I believe in the thought that once you are home, you are a normal person and that’s your place. But the way the world is moving, having a platform for yourself is very important. I also wanted that. I wanted to have a place where I could say and put up what I wanted, what I feel, even if it’s not as much frequent as other people. But as and when I feel like it, now I know i too have a place to put out my thoughts. (Smiles) To the people who want to hear what I have to say, to the audiences, to the people who I interact with. Will Twitter and Instagram happen soon as well? I think it will be the same argument. It took me a long time to be on Facebook. I will see to Twitter and Instagram. I wanted to give Facebook a feel first because I feel it’s a platform where you connect with a larger audience, a larger base of people. I want to give myself a little bit of time and then see where I want to go from here. But there are certainly plans of joining Twitter and Instagram as well. RANVEER SINGH OPENS UP ABOUT HIS RED SPEEDO SCENE IN THE BEFIKRE TRAILER : I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH NUDITY

Global Movie NOVEMBER 2016

Ranveer Singh talks about the Befikre trailer, nudity and much more…. Ranveer Singh has always been comfortable in his skin, as well as with skin show. From the oiled-up torso in Gunday, to the Ang Laga De song, with a dangerously low dhoti around his waist to now, in the Befikre trailer, he walks into a club wearing just a red Speedo. Ranveer seems to love shedding clothes. While filming the scene, he was ready to do as many takes as required till director Aditya Chopra was happy. Despite shooting the scene in a public space, the actor was extremely comfortable dressed simply in briefs. But there was no awkwardness. As Ranveer Singh reveals, “I have no problem with nudity. I am not an exhibitionist, I am extremely comfortable in my skin. People say actorsnangey log hote hain, that doesn’t mean they are literally naked. It means when an actor is performing, it is completely convincing, but they are acting, they don’t really feel it.” He continues, “Actors have their bag of tricks and tools that they employ. They are so effective that the

audiences are convinced that the actor is feeling the emotions. I am not from that school.” About his ‘brief’ moment, he adds, “Me wearing the Speedo is just the physical aspect of it and means very little as opposed what I am actually putting out there. I am naked to another level and it has more to do with my soul. If you wear your soul, you can’t be more naked than that.” However, Ranveer Singh is not the only actor to strip in the film. We see the lead actress – Vaani Kapoor also stripping in front of quite a few men in the trailer! Looks like both the actors had completely immersed themselves in their characters while shooting for Befikre. Ain’t that cool? Befikre marks the comeback of Aditya Chopra to direction. After a long hiatus, Adi is back and he has totally gone all out in this film. Befikre is now the BOLDEST film from Yash Raj Films’ stable and we are super excited to see the actual story of the film. We will see Ranveer and Vaani kiss as many as 28 times in the movie. In fact, we hear that Ranveer will also flaunt his butt as he strips completely during one particular scene in Befikre! Interesting, na? Befikre releases on December 9, which is also Adira’s (daughter of Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukerji) birthday. Befikre celebrates the Parisian style of love and romance and after looking at the trailer, we guess a touching story lies within the romance too. What do you guys have to say about Ranveer’s confession about nudity? Tell us about your thoughts in the comments section below! Also check out the trailer right here:

Ranbir Kapoor opens up on Katrina Kaif: 'There's no awkwardness; we have great creative energy' Ranbir Kapoor is at a tricky place in his career. The star of hits such as Barfi, Rockstar and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has been hailed as one of the best – if not the best – actor of his generation. His ability to transform himself is unique. He pours himself into a character, any character, by mining the most complex emotions. It’s difficult to take your eyes off him, even for a moment, when he’s on screen. And yet, curiously he’s had a cold streak at the box-office lately. Is this a result of bad choices? Of the personal upheaval he’s been through? Or a sense of complacency born out of his overnight stardom? And does he need career intervention? The 33-year-old actor who next stars in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, spoke frankly about failure, heartbreak and the future in an interview . Ranbir, we are at your grandmother’s house in Chembur. It’s where your grandfather Raj Kapoor lived. Do you have memories of visiting him as a kid? I know he was very fond of you, you were his first grandson. Yeah, I was six years old when he passed away, but yes being his first grandson, he showered a little extra love on me. There are few moments that I remember, but also having been told by my family members what he used to think of me, He had this thing with all his grandchildren. He used to call us to his room, which was somewhere downstairs and make us stand in a line and say, “Salaam karo.” We all use to dosalaam; then we had to give him a kiss on either of his cheeks; then he use to give us all these caramel toffees that he used to get from abroad. So you know small incidents like that. I don’t really remember him as the star or filmmaker. I remember him as a fat, loving grandfather. Then beyond that, whatever I’m today is because of his films. I know him more now through his films then actually as a grandson. So yeah, there are a couple of moments I remember. It was actually in this garden, that we were playing. I think it was a film function and I was playing barefoot. All red ants kind of got into my feet.

In the middle of the party, he took me to his bedroom. I was crying, you know I was in lot of pain. He washed my feet, he was singing a song to me. I have this faint memory of a song that he was singing to me. What’s it like living with your grandmother? It’s amazing! My grandmother, by far, is the most likeminded person I’ve ever met. She is, by god’s grace, 87 years old. Just spending time with her, talking about my life, her life, movies, people, food... it’s just been an incredible couple of months. I was very close to her while growing up, but now living with her, really hanging out with her has been the most enriching time for me in these last 33 years. Ranbir, what’s your current state of mind? What’s the head space that you are in right now? But it’s a good time actually to not get bitter about things. Not to turn negative, anxious, nervous or insecure that my films are not working. There’s an enormous negative spotlight on my personal life. You have to take all that in your stride. You have to really understand it and then, free yourself from it. You have to understand yourself as a person. See, my purpose is an actor, so I’m in that phase where my films have to change, my expressions, the tricks in my magic bag have to change. I’ve to unlearn. I’ve to go back to being a nobody and there is absolute bliss in that. To be a nobody, completely strip yourself from all the trappings that you have. The star that I was meant to be or I didn’t become, cancel all of that. I have some great opportunities with filmmakers coming up. I have to be new in those and so the search is for that. Whatever happened in my life in these last couple of years is instrumental in making me that person that I’m going to become in these films. So I’m accepting this phase and nurturing myself. Your films haven’t worked lately. The tendency is for the trade is to write off the actor. Unfortunately an actor is known by the hits he gives. The performances have never been questioned, your talent isn’t being questioned but the films haven’t made a lot of money lately. Is that worrying? Does that make the parents anxious? No! You know my parents have seen it (all). My mother has seen my father going through this for 30 years. My father is very expressive so he used to express it to my mother. He used to be crying, be excited — that’s the person he is. I’m not an expressive person so forget

people, my own family doesn’t know what I’m feeling. Whether I’m happy, sad, going through a bad phase. I bottle it up and like to deal with it on my own. I don’t like to put my pressures on other people. Silly thing because people really help you tide through bad times or you share good times with them and that’s what matters. So it’s also a learning factor for me. But yeah, I’m sure they’re worried, but don’t show it me. Ranbir, when choices go wrong as they did in the case of Bombay Velvet and Besharam, does your confidence take a beating? Because you are the guy who chose Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year so early in your career, you are the guy who saw the potential in Rajneeti, in Wake up Sid, in Barfi. These are great choices. So when your choices don’t work, does that rattle you? To be honest Rajeev, my choices aren’t being tested right now because I’m working with filmmakers like Anurag Basu, Ayan Mukherjee, Rajkumar Hirani, Karan Johar — these are all the best in the business. I can’t really take credit for these choices if they work because they are filmmakers any actor would love to work with. But yes, I’d be lying if I said my confidence is not affected. When films don’t do well, actors are insecure. They think, “Is the shine on my star fading? Was that it? Do I have anything else to offer?” All those thoughts come in, but then you have to fight it. I’m filled with these worrying thoughts. I hope you don’t mean that it’s your confidence in your talent that’s taken a beating. Because the talent has never been questioned — you are a bloody good actor. Yeah, I know that, of course. I’m not sitting in my room and saying, ‘khatam ho gaya, abhi kya hoga.’ I’m not going crazy because I’ve immense faith in my own talent. I know my job. The real struggle was how do I become new, more of a surprise, more engaging? I’m getting bored seeing myself. So I believe that I’m very talented. I’m not questioning that. But Ranbir, it’s not just the career that came apart, is it? You had this very public break-up with Katrina earlier this year. Somehow the perceptions stuck that you came away from it unaffected. That you are emotionally distant.

This is a little bit of a trick question. Whatever I say on any platform, it’s grossly misconstrued. Over the years, I’ve realised my personal life is very dear to me, especially what my relationship with Katrina is. Surely you’ve read this perception that you’re not affected? Of course I’ve read it and it’s fine. You don’t need to know if I’m affected or not. You’ve made no effort to change that perception. Yeah, I don’t need you to know that. It’s my life and the less you know about me, the better. It’ll only make you believe me more when I act. I don’t want you to know me as a person. I can’t sit in every interview and explain my heart (out). Especially where my relationship is concerned because it was really punctured by a lot of things, by absolutely baseless rumours, reports, perceptions and point of views. It hurt but I don’t want to clarify them. I just feel it isn’t required. Let me ask you pointedly Ranbir, was the break-up hard for you? This was obviously not just dating. You guys had moved in together. I haven’t even said I’ve broken up. I haven’t said anything. It’s too dear to me. I don’t want to talk about it. Was it hard going to work knowing that everyone was looking to see how you were dealing with it? Not at all. Katrina and I have amazing creative energy. Working with her is always so much of fun. The kind of passion and work ethic that she has I haven’t seen. We shot in Morocco and back in Bombay. And there was no awkwardness because you went back to shoot Jagga Jasoos soon after? There’s no awkwardness. It’s amazing working with her. Do you think you’ve reached that place as you have with Deepika (Padukone) where you have gone back to being friends and colleagues who can make even romantic movies together? Absolutely. We are actors. We are not here to bring our personal lives and emotions when we come on the set. We bring the character’s emotions. However hard it is, it’s our job. Katrina, she just makes it easy. It’s not awkward or weird. She just brings her A-game every day on set. We have a great creative partnership.

There’s obviously so much grace here, and affection. But don’t you feel that your silence has been misinterpreted by the media? As a result, there’s the reputation that Ranbir has revolving doors in his bedroom or that Ranbir is a cad. Yeah but what do I say? If I’m hurting, I’ll say it to that person, right? Why do I need the world to understand? In my previous relationships, a lot of things were spoken. You lose dignity because it becomes a news item. It just becomes fodder for gossip. So at the risk of sounding pseudo and philosophical, right now I’m just finding bliss at being nothing. Your father Rishi Kapoor’s authorised biography is going to come out later this year and he is known to be brutally honest. I’ve heard that there is a whole chapter devoted to you. Does that make you little bit nervous knowing that secrets will be spilt? It does. But you know however fierce he is about things, he’s a little protective about me. He gets a little soft. So I don’t think he’s going to be that open. Even if he has an opinion, he keeps it to himself. He feels that I’m easily breakable. So he takes a step back and cushions it through my mother. But it’ll be fun to read what his perception of me is. Ranbir, social media today is such an intrinsic part of our life. You are 33 and are on virtually no platform. Your mum works Instagram so well, your dad is Twitter star... no interest at all? I can just tell you that my personal point of view is that there is a lot of self-complimenting, you know trying you put yourself on a pedestal. The good part is that you have direct connect with your fans. But as an actor, you need to step back, you need that mystery. If they know where I pee and how much salt I put on my food, it’s all stupid information. Isn’t it a great tool to know what the fans are thinking? Are you secretly on Twitter? No, not on Twitter but on Instagram. See it’s a double-edged sword. The honest truth is my personality is of somebody who’s very shy; a bit an introvert.

You’re soon going to start shooting the Sanjay Duttbiopic with Rajkumar Hirani. You’ve known Sanjay Dutt since you were a kid, your families have a long history together. Do you feel like you’ve an insight that will help the film? Of course, but then when you approach a film and specially a biopic, and especially on the life of Sanjay Dutt with Rajkumar Hirani making it, you can’t really depend on what you know of him. Now I’ve the responsibility to portray him onscreen in the best way possible because that life is bloody interesting. It’s not trying to paint him grey, white or black. Sanju sir was so giving and graceful. He was so honest about it, he didn’t hide anything. Seeing Priyanka (Chopra) and Deepika (Padukone) trying to make a career in Hollywood; does that interest you? No. I was asked to audition as the second lead in Star Wars a couple of years back. I have a fear of auditioning. Does that come from arrogance? Must be, but also insecurity that what if I get rejected? It’s more a fear from not having that much faith in my talent. But it doesn’t interest me. What Ayan Mukherjee is making interests me more than Star Wars. Let’s make our own Star Wars. Let’s not chase what’s there. That’s great but I have an opportunity here and I don’t think Ayan is less than a JJ Abrams or a George Lucas. Let me work with him and make our own Star Wars. Tell me about meeting with Quentin Tarantino in London. Did you get that autograph? You know this happens to me a lot. It’s not just Quentin Tarantino. I am star struck. I’ve run behind Natalie Portman at Tribeca. She was on the phone and she was crying. I went quickly behind her and said, “I love your…” Before I could say “work”, she turned and said, “Get lost!” So I’ve had my heart broken but I would still chase them. So I was waiting at the car for like half an hour. I saw him coming and from far I’m saying, “Quentin, Quentin.” He walks, looks at me, goes and sits in his car. When the door opens, I’m like, “Sir, picture picture?”and they have it on video. It was really funny and I got teased by the entire crew of Ae Dil, but just to see Quentin Tarantino. Man, this guy really affected my life. His movies —

Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction — are instrumental to the work I am doing. Subconsciously I’ve taken so much from those films so it was a big star struck moment. I don’t feel bad about it. I don’t feel like he is such an ass or a rude guy. I understand that it happens because he is in his own world and he is an artist. Artists are supposed to be weird. Ranbir, we know about your professional ambitions, but not so much about your personal ambitions. A few years ago, you said you’d like to have three kids. Are these still your plans? Does marriage/relationships hold the same place in your life as they did? Of course. Time frames change, because I remember when I started out, I said, “I’m going to get married at 28 and have kids by 30.” So that changes but the ambition and the desire are the same. I do want to get married, I want to have children and I’ll do it in the right way. I’ll meet a like-minded person, fall madly, deeply, truly in love and take it from there. Everything should be natural and organic.

Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra’s candid confessions prove they have a lot in common We just found out a fact that Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra share juts by their candid confessions. Check it out

Maybe its just mere coincidence but would you have ever imagined so many striking similarities between Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan? We all know what a strong onscreen pair these two make and how their jodi has only resulted in big hits. Yes, the box office has been set ringing because of their brilliant chemistry and screen presence. But since Don 2, we haven’t seen this pair come together to create the same amount of stir among fans. Perhaps their ability to be able to make fans go crazy for them might have something to do with how common their approach to life is! Don’t you think? There are so many instances, even in the past where they have given quotes that quite coincidentally match each other’s. In the recent days as well, the same continues to happen. So Priyanka has been giving out interviews from her ‘Yash Raj’ of Quantico, Silver Cup studios in New York, where she has candidly opened up about a lot of things. In one of the interviews, Miss Chopra stated how she has given up on things to reach where she currently is. She said, “I’ve given up my life to achieve what I achieved. I don’t meet my family, I don’t meet my friends, I don’t sleep, I’m unwell, unhealthy (laughs).” You see the kind of schedule she has to live upto and perhaps then you’ll understand why she has no time for friends, family and even her own health! The actress is caught up with Quantico shooting, that leaves her with barely any time to relax and chill with people she wants to or even exercise. But guess what, she’s not the only one! In a recent mindblowing interview by Shah Rukh Khan, the actor too quoted that the less he takes care of himself, the more he gets taken care of. His quote goes like this, “I don’t sleep. I smoke about a 100 cigarettes a day. I forget to eat. I don’t drink water. I have 30 cups of black coffee, and I have a six-pack. So, the less I take care of myself, the more I get taken care of.” Wait, wha’? All this, as we all keep hearing from health experts, attribute to unhealthy habits. Well, that’s how Mr Khan rolls, you see! Both SRK and PeeCee have such jampacked schedules to deal with on a daily basis, without a doubt, they’ll barely have time for exercise or to even follow a strict diet. They’ve both basically explained how with stardom comes a price to pay and that is health! Funny but this isn’t the only common thread the actors have. This may sound lame but in the recent past their names have come together for various reasons such as sharing the same spot on Forbes’ list of highest paid actors. That’s not all, Khan’s first mini series, Ahamaq and Chopra’s Marathi film, Ventilator will also be screened at MAMI this year!

Karan Johar bows to pressure, says will not work with Pakistani artistes again Filmmaker bows to pressure, says will not work with Pak talent in future

As the fate of Karan Johar's Diwali release, 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', hangs in balance with right wing parties threatening to disrupt its screening, the filmmaker finally broke his silence over the snowballing controversy. In a video released yesterday, KJo clarified that he had remained mum all this while since he was "deeply hurt" over being labelled anti-national for working with Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. He also mentioned that he has resolved to not work with any artiste from across the border in future, considering the heightened Indo-Pak hostility post the September 18 Uri attacks and subsequent demand by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS)'s film affairs wing to ban Pak artistes in Indian cinema. Following is an edited transcript of his video: "There has been some talk about why I have remained silent for the past two weeks. Today, I would like to clarify why I have remained silent. It is because of the deep sense of hurt and pain I

felt [about the fact] that a few people could actually believe that I am being anti-national. “I need to say this with strength that, for me, my country comes first and nothing else matters to me but my country. The best way to express patriotism is to spread love and that is all I am trying to do with my work and my cinema. When I shot Ae Dil Hai Mushkil from September to December last year, the [political] climate was completely different. “There were efforts made by our government for peaceful relationships with the neighbouring country, and I respected those endeavours and efforts then. And I respect the sentiment today, because I feel the same. Going forward, I would like to say that, of course, I wouldn’t engage with the talent from the neighbouring country, given the [current] circumstances. “But, with that same energy, I besiege you to know one thing, that over 300 Indians in my crew have put their blood, sweat and tears into my film. And I don’t think it is fair on them to face any kind of turbulence on account of other fellow Indians. I respect the Indian Army, I salute them for everything they do to protect us. And I condemn any form of terrorism that would affect my people in my country and me. “I just hope all of you understand the circumstances and the situation we are in and respect the fact that we love and respect our country over and above everything else.”

Katrina Kaif: I need a superpower to read people’s minds to avoid betrayal

Katrina Kaif recently got in a candid chat with her fans on Facebook. One of her fans questioned the actress if she had superpowers, what she would do. Answering this, Kat said, "The one super power I would like to have is to read people's minds. Then everything would be sorted in life. I would walk into a room and know what you are thinking of me. I would know how you feel about me. We would never be brokenhearted, never be upset and never be betrayed." The actress also confessed that she wants a friend like Baloo and Bagheera in her life and not the monkeys from 'The Junglebook'. From the younger lot, Katrina seemed to be impressed with Sushant Singh Rajput as she praised 'M.S. Dhoni...' during this fun chat. Katrina also revealed about her weak point and that is, she gets nervous when she has to speak in public. In one of the conversation, the actress said that she knows nothing, just like Jon Snow from 'Game of Thrones'. During the end of her live chat, the actress was questioned if she would ever work in a biopic. To which, she happily answered saying that she would love to play Indira Gandhi onscreen.

SALMAN KHAN: AFTER BIGG BOSS, I WILL START THE FARM Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss 10 is just around the corner, but before the popular show starts, Salman talks to us about the latest season, how he plans to start the Indian version of Iulia Vantur’s The Farm, judging shows and much more… It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Salman Khan’s possibly the best host on TV. His audience connect and madcap antics get the crowds wild. Ask him if he wants to try out something different and he says, “Bigg Boss, Dus Ka Dum, The Farm… these are shows that are my connect with my people. I don’t think I would love to venture out of this space at the moment.”What about judging a show? “I will be a very bad judge. I will tell you how horrible I am. When I visit these show’s sets to promote my films, and they ask me to talk about the performances, I get so confused. I can’t pit two people, I can’t pick one over the other. Definitely, that’s a terrible quality as a judge,” he says. But among other shows, he does have a favourite. “Stallone had done a show called The Contender. I loved that. Something like that would be amazing if made the right way in India,” he tells us. But looks like he already has his TV plans in place. He reveals, “After Bigg Boss, I start The Farm which is the same concept as Bigg Boss, but with kheti-baari on a farm. Large space, mitti, animals, plants, vegetables,

trees will all be there. That’s something I personally love doing and I had been planning to do the Indian version for quite sometime. This time, Raj (Nayak) and I are definitely making it happen.” The difference between Bigg Boss and Dus Ka Dum is that DKD had ordinary contestants whereas BB was always about celebrities. This time, the format has changed and Salman is most kicked about it. “I am looking forward to them. This time, on BB, it’s going to be a mix of people. There will be celebrities, film stars and the common man. It will be like rich versus poor. And meri class lagegi iss baar. (Laughs) If I support the celebrities, the other group will say I am doing so because I am an actor myself. If I support the common man, the celebrities will say I have been asked to do it. So either way, I will be blamed but I am definitely excited about it.” What do you guys have to say about Salman Khan planning to start the Indian adaptation of girlfriend Iulia Vantur‘s The Farm? Guru Dutt said working with him won't get me anywhere: Shyam Benegal

When Shyam Benegal first came to Mumbai looking for work in the film industry, he met his cousin legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt, who advised him to start off on his own rather than be an assistant to him. Bengal said having a director like Dutt in the family was a huge inspiration for him to leave Hyderabad, and come to Mumbai in the hope of making a film here. “Having Guru Dutt as a cousin was a great advantage. Not that he helped me, but it was a kind of goal. Because he was a film director, it meant I could also be a film director,” Benegal told reporters here last evening. When he quit his job in Hyderabad, Benegal reached Mumbai and headed to meet the “Pyaasa” helmer. “When I went to meet Guru Dutt, he said, ‘Listen, what are you going to do with me? You will be an assistant and would get no opportunity to do anything else. You will just be a ‘gofor’.” In film line, a ‘gofor’ is a ‘go for this go for that’ person. Which means you won’t really get to do anything except run errands for me,” the 81-year-old director said. Benegal was speaking at the National Institute of Industrial Engineering’s special event ‘Avartan’. The director was part of the celebrity talk show - Cita De La Prerana - which also included Piyush Mishra and Makrand Deshpande. In the quest to achieve his dream of making a film, the “Welcome to Sajjanpur” director followed Dutt’s advice. “He (Dutt) said, he had started of as a dance director and made his way to directing... So eventually I also thought the best possible way would be to join an advertising agency, as I had a certain amount of ability to write.,” Benegal said. After working for many years in advertising agency, he finally made his directorial debut in 1974 with “Ankur”. The director, however, shared that he had approached a well-known advertising film distributor, asking him to produce the film, who in turn agreed to do so but had two conditions. “One was, I am going to give you a sum of money, which was actually very small, and I won’t give you a penny more than that to make the film. Second was, you won’t get any money after you’ve been paid your fee. “If the film makes money, I make money. But remember, you will make a name...I made a film called ‘Ankur’ which became very successful. It happened exactly the way he had said. He made the money, I made the name and so my career started,” he said. Post that, Benegal went on to make films like “Nishant”, “Bhumika”, “Mandi”, “Manthan” and “Zubeidaa”.

Gone are the days when heroines were content with just acting. Now, they want to experiment with filmmaking and dabble in direction and production as well. So it’s not justthe heroes who are turning producers like Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, our B-town beauties are not lagging behind. Deepika Padukone we hear is all set to mark her debut as a producer. A source revealed to BollywoodLife that the actress even amidst her busy schedule is reading scripts. Deepika is currently prepping for her film with Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, Padmavati. The actress will also be promoting her Hollywood debut film xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage on Salman Khan’s hit reality show Bigg Boss season 10. But it’s not just Deepika here are a few other actresses who have ventured into film production… Taking note of current market scenario where movies are making huge profits, it is sensible enough to launch their production houses and produce good movies under their banner. Another reason to have your own production house is the creative freedom you get that comes with it. Many a times we have heard critics suggesting that a particular actor or actress should try attempting a different genre? But most of the times, the actors are not at fault since they are not offered any unique movies thanks to their already established image. At such times, it s advisable that the actors make out of the box movies. Keeping this in mind, our Bollywood ladies are slowly but steadily venturing into production and they seem to do well. Right from Sonam Kapoor to Anushka Sharma, actresses have produced movies under their banner and the results have been quite good so far. Just in case you have your doubts, take a look at the list of actresses below who have ventured into production… Sonam Kapoor

The actress entered into the production business with her sister Rhea Kapoor and has produced movies like Aisha and Khoobsurat. Though Aisha tanked at box office, Khoobsurat did pretty well. Sonam’s chem

istry with Pakistani actor Fawad Khan created a strong buzz and this worked in her favour. The movie was one reason behind Fawad be coming an overnight sensation in India. Post the success of this movie, Sonam is now gearing up for her next release Veere Di Wedding which too will be produced under her home banner. The movie that also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Swara Bhas kar in lead is an out and out chic movie and first of it’s kind in Bollywood. The movie will go on floors this month and will later resume shooting when Kareena gets free post her delivery next year. Interestingly, she was in talks to produce Battle of Bittora which was to star Fawad Khan and herself. However the movie got shelved.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka made a good start to her production house Clean Slate Films after producing NH 10.The actress and her brother manage the production house. Probably to give it a good buzz, Anushka decided to star in the movie with Neil Bhoopalan and the result was quite good. The movie was critically acclaimed. This was one of the strong roles portrayed by actress in her career till now. It was a bold decision on her part to start her own firm so soon. She’s merely few years old in the industry and taking such a giant step deserves an applause. Keeping the success of NH 10 in mind, the actress is all set to produce her next movie Phillauri opposite Diljit Dosanjh.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka’s production company is named as Purple Pebble Pictures and the house recently started off with their first Punjabi movie. The actress sure knows how to keep herself occupied. While PeeCee is juggling her career between Hollywood and Bollywood, the actress has also aimed to divert her attention towards the other aspect which is a wise decision. Lara Dutta

Lara launched her production company Bheegi Basanti soon after her marriage to tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi in 2011.Her first attempt as a producer was successful with Chalo Dilli. Though the movie didn’t have any big stars in it, it left an impact on the audiences. Vinay Pathak’s comic timing and a novel script, made the movie a success at box office. While there is no official confirmation , reports suggest that the sequel to Chalo Dilli is also in the pipeline

Preity Zinta

Preity was unsuccessful when it comes to the success of her production venture. The actress who is now an entrepreneur now with her IPL team had the same fate as her cricket team. Her first production Ishkq in Paris tanked at the box office. We heard that the actress had high hopes from it but the delay in the movie’s release made it suffer. There are no reports yet which suggest she’s planning to produce other movie anytime in future but we are sure, the actress is busy reading different scripts. Well Preity we definitely wait for you to announce your next production soon

Bigg Boss 10: Karan Mehra’s wife Nisha is happy he is in the company of pretty women! Global Movie NOVEMBER 2016

53

Karan said you were the driving force behind his decision to do Bigg Boss 10. Comment… Well, couples are the driving force in each other’s lives, aren’t they? This is what a true partnership is like, the pursuit of each other’s happiness. I am very proud of him. His acknowledgment that I was the driving force made me feel great. -28 Kg In 1 Month Doing Nothing! Don’t Miss Your Chance To Become Slim! Health.com What motivated the decision to do Bigg Boss? He wanted to tap on something different, especially the reality show space. I am proud he took on something as challenging as Bigg Boss. Bigg Boss is like a double-edged sword. You can come out as a hero or as a psycho. Did you weigh in the pros and cons? Absolutely…we weigh in everything before taking a decision. I believe a hero is one who win people’s hearts. Since past few seasons we have seen contestants who have not taken the trophy but are remembered more than the actual winners. For example, RJ Pritam. Karan will be himself on the show. Moreover, when someone utters the word, game, it has a bad connotation. In Bigg Boss, people tend to equate it with politics or spreading dirt. It can also be doing the tasks well, in a competitive manner without pulling other’s down. Karan is very composed, simple and patient. It is not easy to live under 24 cameras, 24×7. I am sure he will come out with a good impression. He is already a winner in my eyes. How did you react when the Bigg Boss makers approached you? There are rumours that he quit Yeh Rishta for Bigg Boss and that he was already in talks with the makers since January. If I am not mistaken then the ninth season of Bigg Boss was going on in February. He signed the contract only 20 days back. We did feel that Karan would be approached for the show. He had quit his show recently and not done any reality show except Nach Baliye. This is a new platform for him. An actor craves for novelty. Karan got immense love as Naitik but I’m sure the character was getting monotonous for him. But then, actors tire out of characters and not the love of fans. This is something new for all of Karan’s fans!

There were talks of how his health was badly affected due to non-stop work. Bigg Boss is no cakewalk physically. Weren’t you worried? Yes, I was. I cannot divulge the exact details due to the confidentiality clause but he is carrying his medicines. There is a medical team in case of an emergency. Moreover, the team is really good. There are regular health check ups of the contestants. Moreover, he has had a break, which has improved his health. Unlike me who can delegate work, Karan likes to do things by himself. And even at the height of his popularity, he never compromised, which can be stressful. His immune system suffered and he was on immunotherapy shots. He is physically and mentally refreshed after a break and fully ready for this show. As a wife don’t you feel insecure about leaving your husband alone in the company of some pretty women inside the house? Never…I have never been insecure of him. I know him too well as a person. He is beyond all this. I did see a few pretty girls at the premiere but it’s too early to comment on them. More than pretty, there are interesting people. I am glad my husband has some beautiful company inside. They are one of the most inseparable couples of TV town. However, Karan Mehra will be away for some time from his wife, Nisha Rawal courtesy his stint on Bigg Boss 10. At the premiere, the Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai actor stated that Nisha was the driving force in his life. Bollywood Life caught up with the singer to EXCLUSIVELY know how she motivated her hubby’s decision to do Salman Khan’s show….

MOUNI ROY TALKS ABOUT NAAGIN SEASON 2, THE JOKES MADE ON HER, HER BOLLYWOOD DEBUT AND MUCH MORE…

Global Movie NOVEMBER 2016

I just shot for a scene which involves both the mother’s and daughter’s part. And I must say it was quite funny. These were chroma shots and I was talking to a long green bamboo. It seemed like a monologue because once I would talk as the mother and once as the daughter. But on a serious note, it is quite a challenge. While playing it, one doesn’t realise, but there is a distinct difference between a mother and daughter and I am trying really hard to get that right. The first thing one notices is the appearance, the face and judge how old they are — whether they are approachable, the aura, etc. I do minimal make-up, but to add on a few years, we are using certain camera tricks. Are you taking any references to play the older role? No, it doesn’t work with me at all. Whatever character I play, the acting comes from within. When you see Shivanya, you will also see a lot of Mouni in it. I have loved dancing since childhood and I know one thing for sure: To make a choreography your own and for it to look convincing, you can’t imitate anyone. You have to imbibe the choreography and then put your touches to it. It’s the same thing with acting. I am going according to what the creatives want. Do you find any similarities between Shivanya and Shivangi? No, Shivanya was driven by rage and the intention of avenging her parents’ death. Shivangi, on the other hand, is a happy-go-lucky small-town girl brought up in a joint family. She is a little innocent. Shivanya had a goal in mind, but there’s nothing like that with Shivangi. She is a normal girl and that makes her likeable. I relate to her in the sense of her being a smalltown girl because I am also one. I can understand the values, the cocoon that she is in, the perfect, sheltered life. But the way I see her character growing, she is nothing like me. Since taking on the show, you have become the butt of naagin jokes with even actors taking potshots at you. Does that bother you? I play a naagin, I can’t help it. I can’t help the scale of the show, I can’t help what people are saying or the jokes. I can either enjoy or ignore them. It’s fine, it doesn’t bother me. It’s funny even, but initially, I used to get very embarrassed.

How was your stint as the host of So You Think You Can Dance? I have to confess that it was only towards the end that I got comfortable. But in the beginning, for the Tuesday shoot… ‘I would get up and say ‘Oh My God!, I have to anchor today. Where should I go, what should I do?’ It was completely new territory for me. That was not my zone. I enjoy acting, and dancing is my passion. When I do either, I feel it in my skin. But here that feeling was not there. I was not used to being the sutradhar of a show, introducing people and controlling the audience. You get a little thrown off because nobody else talks with you. But Rithvik (Dhanjani) was a great co-host, he really helped me. By the time mid-season rolled around, I found my ground. I knew what I was doing and what I was saying. It has also to do with the kind of person I am — I am a lost person in general. I could be talking to you and go into some other zone. Once I stopped doing that, it was okay and I can’t wait to host Season 2, if it happens. Would you say this is the best phase of your career? Absolutely. We didn’t expect Naagin to do so well, but it did and so much stuff followed. There is a lot of visibility like I got an opportunity to perform at the IIFA as well. But you know, when I was shooting for Mahadev and Junoon, I didn’t get to know what other people were talking about. Even when I was shooting for Naagin, the same thing happened. You are following the same routine and your team is like your family, so nobody tells you how good you are looking, or about your work. It was when we went to an awards function that we realised we had become popular. What about films? Are you looking at doing any? Not right now, I am doing Naagin for the next six months, so there is no time. There were reports about you being approached for Bejoy Nambiar’s Agni Nachatiram remake… (Cuts in) I don’t like to talk about things that have not happened

5 shocking things former contestant Sana Khan said about Bigg Boss 10 Sana Khan who was a contestant on Bigg Boss 6 shares her insight about this season Actress Sana Khan who was a part of Bigg Boss 6 credits the show for her progress in life. “When I told everyone I was going to be a part of Bigg Boss, people were like why? I felt it would be a good platform and my decision paid off,” says the Wajah Tum Hoactress. Sana went onto Jai Ho and went on to bag the Vishal Pandya thriller. Earlier she had told us that it was upto a contestant to come out of the house either as a winner or a psycho. When Bollywood Life asked Sana about how she felt about the current season, the lady made some interesting observations. Here’s what she said… #I have seen very little of Bigg Boss so far but frankly this season is scary. I feel it is a combination of Roadies and Bigg Boss. #I would be shit scared if I was told to stay inside the Bigg Boss house with common men for 90 days. Yes, actors fought within themselves in the earlier seasons but celebrities know where to draw the line. They are in better control of their emotions. #The common men inside the house was no baggage. I feel really bad that common people are asking actors who are you? Irrespective of whether someone is a star or not, every actor puts in a lot of hard work to sustain in showbiz. If someone had spoken to me like that on national TV I would have gone mute. #It is regrettable that common men can say anything to actors and get away with it. I saw parts of it where Manoj Punjabi was behaving rudely with Rohan (Mehra). I could feel for him. I believe Rohan is quite popular on him and as a young man to come out this unscathed will be a huge challenge. #I am hoping to catch up on more episodes to see how this pans out. The season looks quite deadly. The lovely lady had done a number of films down South before she took part in Bigg Boss. Post her stint, Sana became a known face in the TV and film industry. Her friendship with Rajeev Paul inside the house made a lot of news.

Max temp: 22C Flight time from UK: 4 hours Time difference: +0 hours

The Canary Islands are Europe’s most reliable options for winter sun, rarely dipping below 20C. Tenerife, the largest member of the archipelago, is famed for the beach hotels of the Costa Adeje and Playa de las Americas. But it also deals in volcanic majesty and wonderful hiking trails on its vast central peak, Mount Teide – as well as superb restaurants in its capital, Santa Cruz.

You do not need a beach to enjoy winter sun. Marrakesh is proof of that. This fabled citadel on the edge of Saharan sand is a mix of swirling souks, relaxed riads and epic Islamic architecture, all wrapped up in north African mythology. That it rarely drops below 20C between October and March is almost incidental.

Cambodia

Max temp: 30C Flight time from UK: 14 hours Time difference: +6 hours

There are several reasons that the most glitzy of the United Arab Emirates has become such a haven from the European winter – the architectural ambition of hotels such as the Burj Al Arab, the warm sands of Jumeirah Beach, the trendy bars and eateries that dot the cityscape, the retail joys on offer in vast shopping temples such as the Mall of the Emirates. But mainly it is to do with the daytime heat, which pins itself resolutely to the 30C mark.

Torn apart by conflict in the Seventies, Cambodia has a dark history that cannot be avoided in Phnom Penh. But if the actions of the Khmer Rouge still cast a shadow, there is plenty of light too in a country of fine sights – the palaces and statues that also shape the capital, the towers and spires of the incomparable Angkor temple complex, the beach resorts that are appearing around Sihanoukville. Acknowledge the past, admire the future. One and Only The Palm: one of Dubai's many luxurious hotels

Koh Samui

Max temp: 32C Flight time from UK: 12 hours Time difference: +6 hours Long seen as the Far East country most reliable for winter sun, Thailand has vast appeal, with some 2,000 miles of shoreline along the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Samui sits on the west side of the latter, an island (Thailand’s second largest, after Phuket) fringed by sandy crescents – not least Chaweng and Lamai Beaches, on the east coast. No longer the undiscovered gem it once was, this is none the less a holiday paradise. Koh Samui

Burma

Max temp: 32C Flight time from UK: 15 hours Time difference: +5.5 hours The Far East is a region still full of mystery – and nowhere more so than Burma. Of course, this is partly down to a bleakness of history – the country that calls itself Myanmar spent five decades under military rule before the elections of 2010 saw it begin to tiptoe towards democracy. It has opened to tourism subsequently – and if it is now better known than it was, there is still much to discover in a state that lays claim to 1,200 miles of shore.

Celebs Who Have Slammed Other Celebs

Not all celebrities are looking to get along. In fact, some can’t help but make snide remarks about their peers. While some of you might think that comments like these are rather petty, we think they are kind of entertaining. There is nothing like celebrities going after other celebrities! We view it of more as a sport. Who will attack who and how will the person attacked respond? It provides a reasonable amount of entertainment and one can always expect at least one celebrity to lose their cool and insult one of their peers. If you like a good catfight, take a look at these 7 celebrities who have taken the time to slam other celebs.

1. Gwyneth Paltrow vs. Jennifer Aniston

When Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt broke up, Gwyneth Paltrow was pretty quick to throw some shade at both of them for having discussed their relationship with the press to begin with. “It would have been a lot easier on Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston now if they had not talked to the press about each other and everything to begin with,” Paltrow told Time magazine. “I learned my lesson at 24.” While most women would have been unappreciative of Paltrow’s judgment, Aniston was surprisingly welcoming of it. “She’s absolutely correct,” she said. “I feel like there is a graveyard of celebrity couples who now have learned their lesson. You know, at the time you go, ‘Celebrate it-we’re in love, and let’s talk, and who cares?’” We think it was pretty low of Paltrow to kick Aniston while she was down. She lost her husband to Angelina Jolie – show a little compassion!

2. Robert Downey Jr. and Alejandro Inarritu

Robert Downey Jr. didn’t react very well when he was asked about director Alejandro Inarritu’s comments about the “cultural genocide” in comic book movies. Although he tried to play it cool, like he didn’t care, he actually ended up making a comment about Inarritu that can be perceived as racist. “I respect the hell out of him. I think for a man whose native tongue is Spanish to be able to put together a phrase like cultural genocide just speaks to how bright he is,” he told the Guardian. Naturally, there was a public outcry when news of Downey Jr.’s comment hit the web. Fans accused him of being racist; however, his publicist Alan Nierob shrugged them off. When Nierob was asked to comment on his client’s barbed remark, he brushed it off, claiming that it wass a compliment. “Taken in the proper context of the interview, it is intended to be, and is, complimentary,” Nierob said. Yeah, right.

3. George Clooney vs. Leonardo DiCaprio

George Clooney thinks Leonardo DiCaprio surrounds himself with the wrong people. He found this out during what was supposed to be a friendly game of basketball. “The thing about playing Leo is you have all these guys talking sh*t. We get there, and there’s this guy, Danny A I think his name is. Danny A is this club kid from New York. And he comes up to me and says, ‘We played once at Chelsea Piers. I kicked your ass,’” Clooney told Esquire. Even though everyone on Clooney’s team were all in their 50s, they ended up trouncing DiCaprio’s team, which got the Oscar-winning actor thinking about the sorts of people that Leo surrounds himself with. “The discrepancy between their game and how they talked about their game made me think of how important it is to have someone in your life to tell you what’s what. I’m not sure if Leo has someone like that,” Clooney said. We think it is safe to say that he doesn’t.

4. Tori Spelling vs. Katie Holmes

Tori Spelling was friends with Katie Holmes at one point, but not anymore. In her book “Spelling It Like It Is,” she talked about an awkward encounter that she had with the former “Dawson’s Creek” star at her vocal coach’s place. “As I sat waiting outside his music room, I heard his prior appointment working with him in the other room. It was some actress singing horribly off-key…That made me feel better. I heard him say good-bye and then the actress walked out of the room. It was Katie Holmes.” Spelling became really irritated when Holmes didn’t seem at all interested in catching up. “Come on. Okay, I know you’re busy. But you’re in the public eye. Don’t tell me you don’t follow the tabloids. Don’t tell me you don’t know anything about other celebrities and their kids,” she wrote. “Then we stood there. She was just plastic. In a perfectly polite way…My pits were drenched. I never sweat. It was that awkward. I thought, I know you’re not a robot because you can’t sing for sh*t.”

5. Seth Rogen vs. Justin Bieber

Since he was invited to meet Justin Bieber, Seth Rogen has been unimpressed with the pop star. “And it was weird, I was like, ‘Sure, I’ll meet him.’ So I went outside to meet him and he was acting like I asked to meet him. It was very nonchalant, ‘Yo man. Wassup,’ and I was like, ‘What the f-ck, I don’t give a f-ck about, I don’t want to meet you. Don’t act all nonplussed to meet me. I didn’t want to meet you. I was totally cool not meeting you…But I was like, fine, I wouldn’t have said anything, I was like, ‘He’s a bit of a mother**ker. Whatever. He’s young, the kid’s a d*ck,” Rogen said. When Bieber heard about Rogen’s harsh remarks, he tried to apologize to actor – sort of. “Seth Rogan (sic) sorry I didnt bow down when I asked 2 meet u was probably a bit shy and didn’t want to be over the top but still. love ur movies,” he tweeted. Something tells us that this didn’t fly with Rogen.

6. Jon Hamm vs. Kim Kardashians

Jon Hamm is over celebrity culture and he doesn’t have anything nice to say about it – especially when it comes to Kim Kardashian. “We’re at a place where the idea of being ‘elite’ is somehow considered negative. Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated,” he told Elle UK. “Being a f-cking idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you’re rewarded significantly. Incuriousness has become cool…It’s celebrated. It doesn’t make sense to me.” When Kim heard about Hamm’s remarks, she spoke out on Twitter. “I just heard about the comment Jon Hamm made about me in an interview. I respect Jon and I am a firm believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that not everyone takes the same path in life. We’re all working hard and we all have to respect one another. Calling someone who runs their own businesses, is a part of a successful TV show, produces, writes, designs, and creates, ‘stupid,’ is in my opinion careless.”

7. Tia Mowry vs. Charlize Theron

Tia Mowry was less than impressed with Charlize Theron when she approached her at their soul cycle class and got rebuffed. “I said ‘Hi,’ and she actually rolled her eyes and said, ‘Oh my God.’ I wasn’t over-the-top. I know how to approach another celebrity. Charlize was just mean. I’m just being honest.” Following the interview, the “Snow White and the Huntsman” star was reportedly trying to get Mowry banned from their spin studio for blabbing to the media, but didn’t have any luck. After seeing that her comments about Theron went viral, Mowry was quick to retract what she said. “I do not know her,” she said. “I do not know Charlize. I absolutely love her, she’s my ‘woman crush Wednesday,’ you can even see it on my Instagram! I’m obsessed with her, I love her, it was definitely blown out of proportion. So that’s all I’m going to say about that.”

Things You Didn’t Know About Julia Roberts 1. She’s Against Botox In an interview with Elle, Roberts said she’s completely against the use of Botox or anything that prevents her from aging naturally. “It’s unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don’t even give themselves a chance to see what they’ll look like as older persons. I want to have some idea of what I’ll look like before I start cleaning the slates,” she said. One of the biggest reasons she’s so against it is because she’d like to still be able to emotionally connect with her children. “I want my kids to know when I’m pissed, when I’m happy, and when I’m confounded. Your face tells a story…and it shouldn’t be a story about your drive to the doctor’s office.”

2. Julia Roberts Tattooed This would be surprising to many, but Julia Roberts is the proud owner of multiple tattoos! While on the Ellen DeGeneres show back in 2014 she divulged that she has tattoos on her lower back. “I have all my children’s names and my husband’s initials,” she said. She also said that she and Danny were a little bit ‘idiotic’ because they had each other’s initials tattooed on each other before they got married. 3. Her Sister Has her Oscar Julia Roberts won her first and only Oscar award for her performance in Erin Brockovich, but she told Vanity Fair that she doesn’t even keep her prized possession in her own home! Her award is at her sister Lisa’s house in New York City. “It’s in my sister’s apartment. And it’s always been there, because after the Oscar’s I went straight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for Ocean’s 11. So I had this thing in my hotel room on the edge of the tub, in this very gold bathroom. I thought, no one’s going to notice it here. It blends in. My sister and her husband were in Las Vegas with me, and their apartment in New York is downstairs from my apartment…So she took it home with her, and by the time I got home there had become this thing about it living in her apartment. People who came over to see her would take their picture with it, and she was making a photo album,” said Roberts.

4. Knitting Julia Roberts is a woman of many talents and one of those is knitting. It’s one of her favorite hobbies and, now that she’s gotten quite good, she likes to push herself and do intricate patterns. In an interview with the Inquirer, Roberts said she likes doing it because it keeps her busy, but also allows her to be social at the same time. She’s knit things like sweaters, scarfs and even sleeping bags for her daughter’s dolls! “Sally Field taught me to needlepoint [when we were doing] Steel Magnolias, and Eric Brat (scenic artist on The Pelican Brief) taught me how to knit. The nice thing is, you can be very [sociable] while knitting. You don’t have to be staring at it. So it’s a nice thing to do on a movie set. I have been knitting for a long time so I think I am pretty good [now]. I made a bunch of stuff and now, my daughter knows how to knit as well,” said Roberts. 5. Meeting Husband, Daniel Modder Roberts met her now-husband Daniel Modder on the set of The Mexican. He was a first assistant cameraman and she was starring in the film. It wasn’t love at first sight because when they first met they were both in relationships with other people, but they formed a strong friendship. At the time she was dating Benajmin Bratt and Modder was married. When their relationships ended, they ended up together. They eventually got married in the summer of 2002 at their ranch home in, Taos, New Mexico in a secret midnight ceremony. The only celebrity who was invited was Bruce Willis and Roberts downplayed the whole thing by not telling anyone in advance. She had no bridesmaids, groomsmen or flower girls and she traded the big white dress for a simple pink cotton halter dress while Moder wore a red shirt with tan pants. They now have three children together, twins Hazel and Finn, 11, and Henry, 9.

6. She’s the Reason Richard Gere did Pretty Woman The chemistry between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts is undeniable, and so it’s hard to imagine any other actors in Pretty Woman! When looking back 25 years later, Roberts and Gere divulged that he almost didn’t take the part. Gere was offered the part of Edward Lewis numerous times, but he kept turning it down because he didn’t like the part. In order to convince him to take on the role, director Garry Marshall brought Julia Roberts to Gere’s apartment (which was also his office at the time) to see if they had any chemistry. “I was so mesmerized I don’t remember Garry. I only remember this girl. We loved each other immediately. It was a nice thing. But to be honest, I didn’t know if I was doing this movie yet. She’s across from my desk, we’re getting to know each other, we’re flirty-flirty, nice-nice, it’s all going [well], and he calls up and is kind of like, ‘How’s it going?’ And I’m going, ‘Yeah, yeah…’ She’s across from the desk and she takes a piece of paper and she’s writing something on it,” said Gere. It was a Post-It note, and Roberts had written, “Please say yes.” Gere said it was so sweet he couldn’t help but agree!

7. Erin Brockovich Julia Roberts won her first Oscar award for her performance in Erin Brockovich. This was one of the most career-changing roles for Roberts. During this film she became the first actress to receive a salary as high as $20 million for a single film. Before she started shooting Ocean’s Eleven, George Clooney and Brad Pitt played a prank on her. They sent her a card that read, “We heard you get 20 per film,” with a $20 dollar bill. 8. Engagements In the ’90s, Julia Roberts began dating Kiefer Sutherland and they eventually became engaged. However, a few days before the wedding, they called the whole thing off. “I had returned from a trip to Arizona intending to tell Kiefer that I thought it would be best for both of us not to get married. But the next time I talked to Kiefer, he called me on the telephone…And he proceeded to tell me what I was going to tell him, which is he did not want to marry me, he did not want this to happen,” she said in an interview with EW. “But he was far more nasty about it than I was going to be. He hung up the phone, and called back a few hours later and basically said, ‘So, is it on or is it off?’ At that time I said what I was going to say. According to Roberts, their breakup was actually extremely civil, but the whole thing was sensationalized by the press. After all was said and done, Kiefer portrayed himself as the victim, as though he was left at the altar, but in reality he had also been dating another woman while he was engaged to Roberts. 9. Liam Neeson In 1987, Julia Roberts acted alongside Liam Neeson in the film Satisfaction. The film wasn’t a big hit, but it did spark a relationship between the two actors. Roberts and Neeson fell in love on set and ended up moving in together. They lived together in Venice for a period of time and dated for about a year. She was only 19 at the time and he was 35. Liam and Julia appeared on screen together again in 1997, almost ten years later for the film Michael Collins.

10. High School In an interview with Access Hollywood, Julia Roberts talked a bit about her high school experience. She explained that she wasn’t very popular — she was just average. “[I was] just mediocre, just getting through the hallways with my girlfriend, Paige. We weren’t losers, but we weren’t popular, we were just coasting, that is exactly what we were doing,” she said. She was a late bloomer. Julia also mentioned that she was never really noticed by guys in high school. They didn’t take notice of her until “late, but it was good timing for me, but, it was latish.” Roberts is still close with Paige. In fact, Paige is her daughter’s godmother! 11. Veterinarian Despite coming from a family of actors, Julia actually wanted to be a veterinarian. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Roberts explained why she never made it very far with her initial career aspirations. “Yes, I did because I saw Rex Harrison play Doctor Dolittle when I was a kid and I thought, ‘Well I have that power. I can talk to the animals. What is wrong with you today? Oh, I see.’ But then I started taking science and biology and realized, ‘Wow, that is hard. I’ll just be an actor,'” she joked.

12. Family of Actors Julia Roberts parents, Betty Lou and Walter Roberts, were both actors who founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers workshop. They divorced in 1971. She has two older siblings — her brother Eric is also an actor. He made his film debut in King of the Gypsies in 1978. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Roberts said she never would have become an actress if she didn’t grow up in a theatrical family. “I wouldn’t have seen it as a real option if my parents weren’t actors and my siblings…It just wouldn’t have occurred to me,” she said. “My dad would take my sister and me to plays when we were young, like six or seven years old. We saw Hair in New York on summer vacation. We would go see Yul Brynner do The King and I in Atlanta.” Her parents were strong theater lovers and even started a children’s theater in their home. Sadly, when Roberts was only 4-yearsold her parents divorced. Julia moved to Georgia with her mother and sister, Lisa, while Eric and her father Walter stayed in Atlanta.
