4 DUO EXHIBITIONS + 2 PERFORMANCES WITH THE WORKS OF 10 EMERGING ARTISTS ABOUT “NARRATIVE IN CONTEMPORARY ART” REPRESENTED IN DIFFERENT MEDIA Starting on February 2nd, 2018 with the exhibition Historiae in the new See Lab project space, The Story Within and Beyond program examines the manifestation and the potential of a “narrative” from various perspectives and throughout different media. The program takes place from February until June and it brings four duo exhibitions and two performances of mainly The Hague young emerging artists. See Lab’s aim is to offer its project space to the artists of different disciplines so they can experiment and create new works or develop the existing ones in relation to See Lab’s project space or the surrounding of The Hague beach. The exhibitions and performances will be accompanied by artist talks, workshops, and a literary readings.

THE STORY WITHIN AND BEYOND The Story Within and Beyond program examines the way how “a story” is manifested throughout different media. The artists approach the narrative from various perspectives (historical and symbolic, social and technological, a personal and a collective identity) and by innovative, interdisciplinary methods. Storytelling is directly, almost invisibly incorporated in the tissue of their work rather than being the work’s main structure. The connection between the works is flooded by counterpoints and therefore raises questions about the visual narrative and opens up the ideas for its continuation. For instance, some artists incorporate new “techno-languages” while still using “old techne”, the poetry,

as the input text to deconstruct the language and to decipher Jupiter planetary emissions (Katarina Petrović). On the other hand, some use the performativity and narrative of a pure body in a theatrical, visual way, using mainly sounds (Natalie Fyfe) or they examine the human body and its encounter with an intimate and a public space as the means of creating possible and impossible narratives (Ymke Vertelman). The majority of artists play with the narrative potentials within the media, even reversing it, therefore, transforming a visual medium of photography into a textual exploration of image culture (Annija Muižule) or a different kinds of historical or literary narratives into various installations (Roman Ermolaev,

Tommy de Moor). They also use their own artworks as the mediators or platforms for telling the stories of others (Nienke Sikkema, Elske Verdoorn, Barbara de Morree) or pretending to do so by putting the viewer in the position of a voyeur (Emilie Ruitinga). Not all media have a possibility of narration some media narrate (like film, video, etc.) and some monstrate –show (like painting, photography, etc.), philosopher Jean Luc Nancy has argued, but in The Story Within and Beyond artists even translate and transform within media itself what is usually connected with an interdisciplinary approach and it shows a full potential of the visual narrative developments in contemporary visual arts.

INHOUDELIJKE OMSCHRIJVING VAN DE EXPOSITIE SERIE Het programma bestaat uit vier duo tentoonstellingen en twee performances: 1. Historiae (duo tentoonstelling), 2. Other Side of the Story (duo tentoonstelling), 3. Remote Passages (duo tentoonstelling) 4a. All the World’s a Stage (duo tentoonstelling) 4b. All the World’s a Stage performance avond en een performative onderzoek). Tijdens iedere tentoonstelling

wordt het werk van twee kunstenaars gepresenteerd en wordt het onderwerp ‘storytelling’’ vanuit verschillende perspectieven benaderd; historisch & symbolisch, sociaal & technologisch en vanuit een persoonlijke en collectieve identiteit. “The Story Within and Beyond” onderzoekt hoe ‘het verhaal’ zich verhoudt binnen verschillende media (zoals in performance art, fotografie, video, animatie, kunstwetenschappen, etc.) en hoe innovatieve en interdisciplinaire methodes kunnen worden toegepast waardoor dit

in het werk van de kunstenaar bijna onzichtbaar in het weefsel is opgenomen. De verbindingen en tegenstellingen tussen de werken roepen nieuwe vragen op over de visuele context hierdoor ontstaan nieuwe ideeën voor de continuïteit ervan. Enerzijds gebruiken sommige kunstenaars bijvoorbeeld nieuwe “techno-talen” terwijl ze eerder “old techne” gebruikten (gewone tekst, die ook gereedschap is) en zetten vervolgens poëzie om naar een softwareproduct (K. Petrovic). Anderzijds wordt gebruik gemaakt

Ermolaev and De Moor approach the subject of history on various levels, with very layered artworks and a high demand for aesthetics as the outcome. In their works history is juxtaposed with the contemporary society, art history with contemporary visual arts, and finally, they transform different kinds of historical or literary narratives into interdisciplinary art installations by combining different kinds of techniques such as 16mm film and digital media and also Pepperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ghost (Ermolaev) or enfleurage and mummification (De Moor).

TOMMY DE MOOR Nostalgia has always been a recurrent theme within the work of Dutch designer Tommy de Moor (1990). Including elements such as suffering, desire and homesickness which are shown in his thematic researches looking for materials and meaning. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a rationality behind this, resulting in a prescient, but tangible, materialization of transiency and a sense of impermanence. All of this reflects into a delicate balance between art and design. www.tommydemoor.nl

ROMAN ERMOLAEV Roman Ermolaev (1991, Saint-Petersburg) lives and works in Amsterdam. He obtained a degree at the Rietveld Academy and won the Research Labs award for the best audiovisual work at Eye Filmmuseum in May 2017. He creates moving image works such as films, animations and photography/drawing based projects informed by historical references, cinematographic language and performative elements of theatre. romanermolav

OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY

Elske Verdoorn & Barbara de Morree MARCH 2ND - MARCH 18TH OPENING: FRIDAY, MARCH 2ND, 19:00 H OPEN: FRI - SUN | 13:00 - 17:00 H

This exhibition focuses on the „personal narrative of others.“ With the strong sense of ethics, the artists Barbara De Morree and Elske Verdoorn are giving a voice to special, anonymous Hague persons, erasing the boundaries between the persona of the observing artist and the persona of her inspiration. In these uncommon cases the objects of inspiration become subjects. This time the artists will create new works or investigate the existing ones from different perspectives, especially for the See Lab exhibition space.

ELSKE VERDOORN Elske mainly works with photography and video, but she likes to adapt her method and materials to the subject. Elske was featured as ‘one to watch’ in the British Journal of Photography Talent Issue of 2016. Her work was featured in international and national publications, shown in group exhibitions at Unseen Photo Fair (Amsterdam), Beelddragers x10 (Amsterdam) and 3M Art Foundation (Santa Marta, Colombia). She had her first duo-show in Het Nutshuis, The Hague in 2017. www.elskeverdoorn.nl

BARBARA DE MORREE What happens when we really listen and connect to each other? That’s the most important research question in the projects of Barbara de Morree. In 2016 she graduated from The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Her projects are about (unexpected) encounters and in every project she finds a way to visualize the connection between her and the one she meets. www.barberademorree.nl

Both Annija Muižule and Katarina Petrović use impersonal narratives in the interdisciplinary way in order to create an interplay within different media and to criticize the capitalist techno-marketing society. In a dystopian way Petrović uses J.L. Borges Two English poems (1934) as the input text to deconstruct the language and to decipher Jupiter planetary emissions, and Muižule transforms the visual medium of photography into textual exploration of existential image culture.

KATARINA PETROVIĆ Katarina Petrović is an artist and researcher working at the intersection of art, science and humanities. She investigates symbolical structures and their organisation in language, science, sound and code, focusing on aspects that resist strict formulations. Holding a MMus degree from ArtScience Interfaculty, Royal Conservatoire and Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague, Katarina previously studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She is a co-founder of association and podcast Femkanje, ArtScience Forum and research initiative, and a member of ULUS and Stroom Den Haag. www.katarinapetrovic.net

ANNIJA MUIŽULE Annija Muižule, visual artist (born in 1992, Liepāja, Latvia. Based in The Hague, The Netherlands). While obtaining her recent bachelor in Photography at The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, her ideas shifted from being expressed through photography to becoming about the medium itself. We live in a world which is largely sustained by visual information. Her work deals with the representation of reality through images and common visual language, and actively questions the limitations of the photography medium. This exhibition (Nienke Sikkema, Emilie Ruitinga) and the performance program (Natalie Fyfe, Ymke Vertelman) focus on â&#x20AC;&#x153;the stageâ&#x20AC;? as a possible place for telling stories, whether as an inner world stage or as an outer (public) world stage, whether as a voyeur or an extrovert sharing oneself with the public. It also examines the human body and its encounter with an intimate and public space as the means of creating possible and impossible narratives. For the performance program the artists will further develop their existing projects to correlate with the See Lab project space.

NIENKE SIKKEMA Nienke Sikkema (1988 Amsterdam, the Netherlands) is an autonomous designer with a background in history and journalism. In her work she always focuses on the narrative aspect of objects and their shapes, The interaction between people and the object played a central role in this. When people step out of their everyday routine for a moment and stop to think about what they see or do, a big part of her goal is reached. www.nienkesikkema.nl

EMILIE RUITINGA Emilie Ruitinga is an Amsterdam born visual artist currently based in The Hague, the Netherlands, and recent Fine Arts graduate of the Royal Academy of Art the Hague. By combining moving image (stopmotion) and sound in her video installations, the past is revived. A tainted illusion; a place that quickly shifts of moods, marked with a rhythm of hypnosis and disillusion. Creating is a way of exorcism. Natalie Fyfe & Ymke Vertelman MAY 30TH - JUNE 1ST PERFORMANCE PERFORMATIVE RESEARCH

NATALIE FYFE Natalie Fyfe is an emerging artist and performer who positions herself at the border of art and music. With an interest in psychopathology Natalie composes with mundane sounds and isolated body parts to create intersections of control between delusion and reality. Natalie is a recent graduate of MA ArtScience at The Royal Conservatoire, The Hague, where she was awarded the Masters ArtScience department Award and the Royal Academy of Art Masters Award for her graduation work Choreography of the Mouth. Natalie is currently based in The Hague, the Netherlands. www.natalie-fyfe.com

YMKE VERTELMAN Ymke Vertelman is a 2017 graduate from the Interior Design department of the KABK whose research emphasis on interaction between bodies in space. In 2014 she represented KABK at the Salone Del Mobile in Milan, with a work about sound and body movement, using the impact of dance. For her graduation she presented an outstanding work addressing the issue of personal space, using body extensions to modulate the physical space between people. By activating her work through performance and participation of the viewer, she provokes new spatial perceptions. Working on the edge of Interior Design and Performance, allows her the freedom to work in an experimental and autonomous way. Ymke Vertelman

This publication appears on the occasion of the exhibition series: ‘The Story Within and Beyond’ at See Lab 02.02.2018 — 01.06.2018 Project space See Lab: See Lab is a new cultural incubator located in an old school building at The Hague beach, The Netherlands. It emerged from a shared dream to establish a long term working community where professional artists and culture creators with a DIY-mentality work both independently and together on art and culture. See Lab hosts 14 affordable workspaces and a project space. It functions as an experimental laboratory for its users by providing testing ground for new ideas and space to explore. Text: Neva Lukic. Neva Lukic lives and works as an writer/ curator between Zagreb and Den Haag. Her work balances between poetry and visual arts, between writing and curating. The worlds of poetry and visual arts are inseparable. In the creation of the poems and short stories the starting point is always a vision which comes into mind, as the ontological world of mystery is slowly being discovered through strong imagery… For these reasons she often collaborates with (visual) artists with the aim to create interdisciplinary projects close to video art/short film, literary performance and visual poetry. Design: Anke van den Berg. Anke van den Berg lives and works as an artist and designer in The Hague. She creates strategy and design in the field of art and culture across all platforms. Anke designs magazines, books, brand identities, websites, animations, photo’s and objects for clients and herself. Anke is initiator and chairman of the cultural incubator See Lab in the Hague.
