WAWEL CASTLE
The Royal Castle on top of limestone Wawel Hill located on the edge of the Old Town is one of the most important symbols of Krakow and Poland. When Krakow was the capital of Poland, Wawel was the official seat of our kings. The structure is a mixture of Medieval, Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque styles.
Before the Second World War, the Jewish community made up 25% of the population of Krakow. According to the 1939 census, conducted by the occupants, it had consisted of 64,000 people. After the war, the number of Jews declined to about 1000. See the former Ghetto and Plaszow Concentration Camp.
