Letter from the Director Please enjoy this annual report, our first ever to be released in electronic copy.

The 2009/10 school year was marked by stark contrasts. Public funding from California was cut again as the economy continued into a deep recession. Many schools were closed across the state and teachers were laid off in every district.

The response by our community was to rally around this education that we love and protect every program, every job, and every benefit. We were the only local charter that ended the year without deficit spending. Our stellar efforts were readily apparent as our total fundraising dollars exceeded $330,000 which is ten times our annual giving from just seven years ago.

In these pages you will find our accountability to you, how the money comes into our school and how it is spent. Our school has councils that all work in collaborative partnership to shepherd the school’s ongoing development.

Community successes – big and small – were found throughout the campus. A major milestone we reached this year is that every full time teacher has now completed a Waldorf Teacher Training course. Our vision, our purpose, our children, all have a clear direction. Now we have arrived as a faculty and staff to put that future in front of the community with our pedagogical training and your generous support. We continue to proactively monitor the status of funding for the State’s grant for our new campus.

Every time I walk prospective parents through the school, I never have to tell the teachers when we will arrive because I know there is always something magical happening in every class. As you read through these pages, we hope that you feel moved to visit our classes, volunteer in our programs, and celebrate at our festivals. In a time of hardship across California and our nation, we have grown wealthy with love and support.

School Finances YRCS received most of its income from state revenues based on the average daily attendance of our students. This revenue is listed as Revenue Limit and State Income. The State Income also reflects stimulus funds received via the ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) enacted in 2009.* Gift support was received from the Educational Foundation, our fundraising arm of the school and include funds from our Annual Pledge Drive, Capital Campaign and Moondance Live and Silent Auction as well as other fundraising activities. These revenue sources collectively pay for our program expenses which include staff salaries & benefits, all supplies, rent and utilities and other training, administrative and facility costs.

As we move forward, our challenge will be to continue to maintain a balanced budget with the continued reductions in state funding. We will also need to closely monitor cash flow, ensuring timing is right for our revenues are appropriately covering our expenses.

The Charter Council is the governing body which is responsible for the overall management of our school. This management involves the oversight of existing policies and the implementation of new policies related to budget, personnel, curriculum, facilities and other critical tasks. A fundamental aspect of this oversight is the assurance of accountability related to these policies.

As most of you know, in May 2008, YRCS enthusiastically received an $8.5 million grant and loan from the State of California for the purchase of land and to fund the construction of a new school campus. Our site committee located - and the Charter Council approved negotiations for - two adjoining properties. We successfully purchased one parcel and with the renovation efforts of our YRCS families and friends, our school is now the proud owner of a rental property off Old Dairy Road in Grass Valley. We are still in escrow for the adjoining land property.

However, due to economic challenges, the State of California was forced to suspend the funding for state-wide schools.

This suspension included our grant. After much deliberation, the Charter Council decided to freeze all additional building expenses and hope that in the near future we can resume moving forward on our vision of our new school.

During the 2009-10 school year, the Charter Council welcomed and appreciated the parent guests that attended our meetings and shared their concerns and suggestions. As follow-up to their feedback, the Charter Council is in the process of revising our kindergarten and school discipline policies, administration communication concern forms, and implementing our SHINE (Social Health Inclusion Network for Everyone) group into these processes. It’s our goal to have those documents ready shortly after the start of the school year.

State budget issues continue to be a substantial challenge for schools statewide with many California school employees facing salary cuts, lay-offs or school closures. With successful efforts of our Ed Foundation and the generous families and friends of YRCS, we are very pleased to report that our school continues to remain financially strong and secure.

Our teacher and employee salaries remain intact, as well as our school programs. The Charter Council approved expansion to include the new home-study program that began Fall 2010. Next year’s enrollment is healthy and strong and we feel the actions taken by the Charter Council have placed the school on a very solid footing. The will, fortitude and determination of the YRCS school community are truly amazing.

When I think of what the Parent Council achieved last school year, I think the most important aspect is that it found its voice within Yuba River Charter School. We see that we can make a difference to our school community and we can help with the planning and daily events that are creating a healthy, creative and spiritually profound educational environment.

Of course, one can look at some very real things that we achieved last year. The Parent Council funded jerseys for the school basketball team and purchased new balls for the girls’ volleyball team. From the Parent Council budget we gave seed money to start a school store and also offered funds for the school administration to aid families in need with musical instrument rental fees.

The above achievements are commendable. However, I believe that they were achieved because of each parent’s commitment to the Parent Council to raise the bar of our involvement in the school. And we started it by raising the bar for ourselves as individual community members.

I am very excited about the renewed energy the Parent Council found during 2009-10. I hope it continues to build a foundation that the Parent Council and Yuba River Charter School grow from and continue to prosper from as we look forward to YRCS’s future.

I am honored to find myself in the midst of such an amazing community as Yuba River Charter School. In particular, I continue to enjoy serving on the Educational Foundation. The Educational Foundation is a group of dedicated individuals collaborating, co-creating and facilitating the fulfillment of our school’s vision as defined by the Charter Council. It’s such a pleasure to share the news of our school community’s amazing accomplishments this year!

Our Annual Fund Drive, which provides each family with personnel connection and the opportunity to share their feelings and ideas, was very successful in raising critical dollars for the school’s operating budget. The Moondance Auction, under the guidance of our amazing Melissa Seibold, was a funfilled night out for parents. The event grossed substantially more money than ever before, having raised over $37,000.

The most exciting and inspiring event for me was clearly the Gift Matching Campaign. This began with an incredible $35,000 seed-gift from a generous alumni family. Our YRCS Community accepted that gift and, in my eyes, showed their appreciation and gratitude by raising another $40,000 in only four short weeks. Being as families matched and exceeded the seed-gift, these monies will again be matched during the 2010-11 school year. Our Community’s efforts clearly showed its love and dedication to the children of YRCS. Money raised through the Educational Foundation has helped prevent teachers and staff pay cuts, contributed to our teacher’s health benefits, and provided for the maintenance and reinstatement of some of our children’s programs.

Having the opportunity to be a part of fulfilling the needs of our children is an inspiring experience for all of us. We welcome your input and participation. There is a meaningful place for YOU in the YRCS Educational Foundation.

Alumni Profiles Our past is our future. YRCS thrilled to feature just a few of the amazing people who have had the fortune of a Waldorf education in Nevada County. These talented and ambitious young adults are now using their ‘head, hearts and hands’ to make a difference in the world.

The YRCS alumnus history is filled with inspiring and exciting personal stories of enriched paths taken and gifts of goodness and generosity given back to the world. It is exciting to see to difference this education can make.

Luke Berliner

“(The Waldorf curriculum and education) allowed us to develop into who we wanted to become. Personally, I am very satisfied with where I am in my life. And it all started with such an emphasis of storytelling and plays and reading. Even math had stories behind the symbols. Believing, making believe, and being creative.”

Luke is a 2002 YRCS graduate, who by his sophomore year at Nevada Union High School, had received acceptance into all of the art schools he applied to for college. Luke believes that the Waldorf arts-based curriculum, along with the child-centered approach to education, recognizing each individual student’s needs and abilities, was a very crucial combination for him and his success.

Luke graduated from the Otis School of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA in spring of 2010.

Otis is one of the most culturally diverse private schools of art and design in the country and is considered one of the major art institutions in the United States.

Luke now works for Hasbro, Inc. in creative ideation and production. Luke’s current project with Hasbro is the Hub Network’s up-coming television series, Transformers Prime. Luke has worked in computer graphics doing creative design for television commercials, music videos and print advertising. His past projects include clients such as Sony, Nissan, the U.S. Air Force and R&B performer Beyonce. www.lukeberliner.com

Trinity Connelley

Trinity is the second of three sisters to graduate from YRCS. During her first year in college, she studied abroad in Florence, Italy; a very helpful place to visit and study when working towards your Bachelor of Arts degree. In 2009, she volunteered at the children’s home, “Ama Ghar,” in Katmandu, Nepal. Her plans include pursuing her Master of Art degree, possibly at UC-Davis.

Alumni Profiles Heather (Jacobson) Hunt

Waldorf education provided Heather with vivid memories, an awareness of time and seasons, and the importance of finding and celebrating meaning in them. Looking back, recess and playing outdoors were incredibly valuable to her childhood. She believes the mixture of art, dance, and creativity, along with the approach to teaching sciences and language arts gave her a solid foundation to her future success. Since graduating from Nevada Union High School with honors, Heather took three years “off ” to travel the world before attending college.

“Waldorf gave me the confidence to follow my dreams of travel, as I went all over Europe, Mexico, Nepal, India, Thailand and Bali.”

Heather graduated in 2002 from Mills College, in Oakland (having also been accepted to UC-Berkeley), and continued to follow her dream of becoming a chiropractor, specializing in women’s health.

She studied for four years in Portland, OR and has now returned to Nevada County where she lives with her husband, Luke, and son, Jacob.

Heather is now a partner at Jacobson Chiropractic, in Nevada City. “(Waldorf education) gave me a feeling that I was able to do anything because my teachers, and the greater community, always reinforced my strengths, instead of focusing on weaknesses. Singing. Class field trips galore. Friendships. . .My best friends are still my Waldorf friends from kindergarten. The focus on the ‘whole child’ really works!”

Lindsey Weills

“I began my Waldorf education in the third grade with Mrs. Geisler. I have been told by my mom that I begged to go to the school after one visit. I always really appreciated how at home I felt in the classroom, both with the teacher and students.

The foundation Waldorf education gave me helped me move into adulthood with self-confidence and a perspective on life I would otherwise probably not have. Not to mention an understanding of both music and the English language, which surpassed most of my peers.

I am so excited to have my daughter Ti’elsie now enrolled in Teacher Doris’s Lavender Kindergarten. I look forward to being a part of YRCS and the YRCS community as a parent; having a whole new view of Waldorf education -- watching my own children learn in the nurturing, loving environment, which I was also so lucky to have.”

Alumni Profiles Samantha Egan Maskey

Samantha graduated from YRCS in 2001. She and four of her YRCS classmates, Thira Gilbert, Clare Jacobson, Shannon Buckley, and Ariana Rampy, went on to graduated as Valedictorians from Nevada Union High School in 2005. In the spring of 2009, Samantha received her Bachelor of Arts from UC-Berkley, majoring in Political Economics with an interdisciplinary program focused on Global Politics and Human Rights. Samantha is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree at the prestigious London School of Economics (LES), within the Global Politics program. She intends to complete her LES thesis by October 2011.

Her future career goals include work on public policy issues in the field of international development with the intention of creating government policies that bring more equitable balance to international political systems.

Samantha is fluent in four languages including Nepalese, Hindi and Spanish.

She has traveled extensively in Nepal, India, Thailand and Europe with her husband Dikesh Maskey.

“I think that the most significant way in which my early experiences at YRCS have impacted the person I am today was providing me with a strong foundation, not only from which I could continue to learn, but also to grow as an individual.

The support system that is built through having such intimate class settings where children form lifelong friendships and get attention that really acknowledge and address their strengths is amazing. The attitude towards life and learning that was instilled in me provided me with such a strong personal structure that I was able to continue down a positive path into my future.”

Harry Winters

“Our Waldorf education instilled (in us) an obligation to act. I feel that my classmates and I have an obligation to make the world better than we found it.”

Harry, brother of current YRCS 3rd grader Shemariah Winters, graduated from Yuba River Charter School in 2002 and was a student of Patricia Montijo. Harry graduated from Nevada Union High School in three years and continued his final year of studies with the American Field Service in Leuven, Belgium.

Harry now lives in Bulgaria where he is enrolled in a six-year medical school program. In August 2010, Harry served a week in Haiti, working with a medical team to assist earthquake victims and the country’s ongoing recovery and rescue efforts.

“When you grow up in a Waldorf educational environment you learn to assume that your opinions do matter. We were encouraged to be ourselves. As individuals who are not afraid to express and do.”
