Daar gaan lekker gekuier word om hierdie mylpaal te vier.

VEREENIGING. - Toe Ferdie Swanepoel op 18 April vir die Mahala-wedstryd se trekking na Star Nissan Vereeniging ry, het hy min geweet dat ‘n vroeë verjaardaggeskenk op hom wag... Hy het die sleutel gekies wat die splinternuwe Nissan NP 200 1.6-bakkie aangeskakel het! Sowat 600 mense het die oggend opgewonde by Star Nissan in Uniestraat bymekaargekom om te sien watter tien van die 350 semifinaliste se name getrek gaan word vir die finale fase van die wedstryd. Dié tien kon elk ‘n sleutel in ‘n ongemerkte koevert trek en probeer om die nuwe bakkie aan te skakel. Spanning het hoog geloop terwyl die finaliste een na die ander onsuksesvol probeer het. Uiteindelik was dit Ferdie se beurt - die sewende finalis in die ry. Toe hy die sleutel draai, het die enjin dadelik gesond begin dreun - die bakkie was syne! “Dis al meer as ‘n week maar my senuwees is steeds klaar,” sê Ferdie. Hy het in Januarie vanjaar ‘n Datsun Go Lux by Star Nissan gekoop en toe by Mynie Fourie, die verkoopskonsultant, gehoor dat hy outomaties vir die Mahala-wedstryd en die bakkie-trekking ingeskryf is. “Ek sal die plakkers op die bakkie met liefde daarop hou as publisiteit vir Star Nissan Vereeniging. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Well known HIV/Aids activist Fabrice Facar, goodwill ambassador for children, visited the Emfuleni Shelter for Boys to donate a wide range of gifts including food parcels on March 15. “There can be nothing more special than celebrating the joy of children, particularly children in the shelters and those roaming the street,” said Facar. “Children are the future of the country that we need to nurture and take care of.” Emfuleni Shelter has always been close to Facar’s heart. He said whenever he raises food to his mouth, he thinks about those children who do not have bread on the table.
During his visit to the Shelter, he was handed a letter of appreciation by the board management for his good work for the entire community. Dimakatso Morobi, founder of the shelter, and Marritjie Hugue, social worker from the Department of Social Service Development, could not hide their excitement after receiving the donations. Morobi said the parcels come at a time when learners were at different schools: “We wish they were here to appreciate and thank Facar.” She added that the shelter has been there for the past 15 years: “With leaders like Facar, we can only be grateful to him and his associates. The food will feed over 13 children all attending school.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Christian Hyman has been appointed as Executive Sous Chef at Emerald Resort & Casino’s premier restaurant High Stakes. Christian (Chris) has over 13 years’ cooking experience, which includes owning and managing his own bistro and gaining international experience as Executive Sous Chef at Royal Caribbean Cruise Liners and throughout various prestigious South African locations. “Chris brings a wealth of culinary experience to Emerald Resort & Casino, and we’re excited to have him on board,” says Tanuja Gangabishun, Marketing Executive at Emerald Resort & Casino. “After sampling his food, I’m confident that our guests will also appreciate his deft skills.” Growing up on the south coast of KwaZulu Natal in Amanzimtoti, attending chefs’ school in Durban and spending most of his career in that region, Chris believes that he has a fair hand at cooking seafood. “It’s not just seafood; I let all ingredients speak for themselves and can take an already familiar dish, apply my experience, and turn it into spectacular cuisine,” he says. Two Personal Growth Courses will commence on 27th July 2015 – 09.00 and another at 18.30 at LifeLine. The courses are highly recommended for anyone who interacts with other people and for enhancing self esteem. They are well known and form the backbone of all LifeLine counselling. The courses will run in Three Rivers for a period of 10 weeks – 3 hours once a week - one on a Monday – one in the morning from 09.00 am to 12.00 noon and another in the evening from 18.30 until 21.30. A respondent cannot interchange – that is,
if you start the morning course you have to stay in the morning course. The Counselling Skills Course will be presented over 6/7 weeks – three hours once a week at the same times as the Personal Growth course and following immediately after the Personal Growth Course. VANDERBIJLPARK. - LifeLine Centres across South Africa including LifeLine Vaal Triangle are promoting “Thursdays in Black”. This is an awareness campaign highlighting the issue of saying NO to violence against women and children. Each Thursday, LifeLine’s staff and volunteers wear black to encourage South Africans to be more aware of this terrible scourge. “Black is a symbol of strength and courage, representing our solidarity with victims and survivors of violence. By wearing black we call for a world without rape and violence. “We encourage and challenge the community to join us each Thursday to take a stand against violence by wearing black. Golf Shirts and T Shirts are available from LifeLine. Each shirt has the LifeLine `swish’ and name on the front and the message about violence against women and children on the back,” says Colleen Rogers, director of LifeLine (Vaal). Black bracelets (available from LifeLine Vaal Triangle and handmade by victims of gender-based violence (at the Bella Maria Shelter) are also available from LifeLine Vaal. LifeLine Vaal provides psychosocial services at two Thuthuzela Care Centres, Vereeniging and Sasolburg to victims of rape and domestic violence. VEREENIGING. - ‘n Bekende in voormalige regimentskringe, oud-kommandant Pierre Viljoen (87), is onverwags op 7 April aan ‘n hartaanval oorlede. Oom Pierre, soos wat hy onder talle oud-lede bekend was, was ‘n jarelange inwoner van Vereeniging, waar hy die afgelope tyd in Drie Riviere Aftreeoord (Fase 2) in Basheestraat gewoon het. Die begrafnis is op Vrydag 10 April vanuit die NG Kerk Drie Riviere deur ds. G. (Bok) Jansen van Rensburg waargeneem. Petrus Johannes (Pierre) Viljoen is op 19 Februarie 1928 in Colesburg in die NoordKaap gebore. Nadat hy by die destydse Spoorweë as ambagsman gekwalifiseer het, het hy ook by Yskor Vanderbijlpark, SAFIM in Vereeniging en Atlas gewerk. Hy het mettertyd sy Nasionale Onderwysdiploma behaal en in die onderwys betrokke geraak. In die jare sewentig was hy die kadet-bevelvoerder by die Hoër Tegniese Skool Vereeniging. Hy het later ook klas gegee by die Tegniese Kollege, waar hy as afdelingshoof uitgetree het. As burgermaglid het hy diep spore in militêre kringe getrap. Sy ambisie was om in die Tweede Wêreldoorlog te gaan veg, maar hy was te jonk en vanaf 1944 tot 1945 het hy as sestienjarige by die Jeug Opleidingsbrigade aangesluit en ‘n LMG- en Vickers-masjiengeweerinstrukteur geword. Hy het by die Transvaal Scottish betrokke geraak en was deel van die erewag vir Koning George VI
tydens sy besoek aan Suid-Afrika, SAS Brigade, 6de Bataljon in De Aar. Sy militêre loopbaan het begin blom toe hy in 1950 by 1LLA (Ligte Lugafweer) in Vereeniging aangesluit het. In ‘n stadium was hy die regiment-sersantmajoor (RSM) van die eenheid. In 1966 sluit hy aan by Regiment Vaalrivier (RVR) waar hy hom as offisier bekwaam het. In 1983 is hy bevorder tot kommandant en aangestel as bevelvoerder van Regiment Overvaal (ROV) tot met sy bedanking in 1988. Onder sy bevel het ROV die Vryheid van Vereeniging van die destydse burgemeester, raadslid Kingsley Bell, ontvang. Hy het ook verskeie kere grensdiens verrig en was lid van die Kanonniersbondtak in Vereeniging. Hy was ‘n wonderlike voorbeeld as soldaat en vriend. In ‘n stadium het hy betrokke geraak in die politiek en het die KP ondersteun. Hy was baie lief vir houtwerk en het met waardevolle voëls geboer terwyl hy in Buyscelia gewoon het. Oom Pierre word oorleef deur sy eggenote tannie Anna, drie seuns, een dogter, tien kleinkinders en vier agterkleinkinders. * Die skrywer van die berig, Saadjie Zeelie, is ook ‘n voormalige bevelvoerder van die nou-ontbinde Regiment Overvaal.

Government aims to build more clinics: Pitso Lazarus Dithagiso
SEBOKENG. - “We are moving in the right direction, listening to the plight of the communities, communicating well with the province,” said Emfuleni MMC for Health and Social Development Sello Pitso. Gauteng Province is at the receiving end of all the provinces surrounding it. A Social Development Stakeholders Assembly Forum that included the provincial and national Departments of Health was called by the office of Cllr Pitso at the Saul Tsotetsi Sport Complex for May 2. The meeting was called after three months so the MMC could listen to all stakeholders from different sectors to reassure the community as to the challenges they experience. The government will always strive to ensure that the community receives better health-care in all clinics: “No patient will receive expired medications. I totally disagree with the complaint from the public that they always receive `panados’ despite their different sicknesses.”

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in Sedibeng recently donated 50 pairs of shoes to needy learners of Assumpta Primary School in Sharpeville. This was made possible by SANTACO Sedibeng, regional chairman James Limo. Limo says this gesture is very important and is
a way of bringing the taxi industry and the community together. “So many many negative things are always being said about taxi drivers and people who work in the taxi industry. I want to tell people that a big transformation is taking place, especially here in Sedibeng. We care about our community and we are going to continue with our social responsibility
through giving back to the needy and building our communities.” Assumpta Primary School Principal Clement Nkhumise says, “I would like to thank Assumpta and the SA Taxi Foundation for donating shoes to our needy learners.We need community involvement to rub out all the negative things always said about taxi driv-
ers.” Nkhumise states that the School is independent although partly subsidised by government: “Some kids here come from unprivileged backgrounds and those are the kids that will be getting the shoes. I would like to urge the parents to keep on trying as they have been.”

VEREENIGING. - A Nigerian suspect was recently arrested by the community and brought into the Vereeniging Police Station. This is after he was implicated in various crimes recently in the area. “The person photographed goes around Vereeniging robbing people of their cellphones, cash, groceries and sometimes he even rapes his victims,” says Vereeniging spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda. Funda says the suspect meets his unsuspecting victims and asks them for cigarettes or their telephone numbers and then pounces on them. “The suspect also enters people’s houses while they are asleep and steals appliances, flat screens, clothes and laptops. “On Tuesday community members arrested him and brought him to the police station. Some of them have case numbers of cases already opened against him. Phillemon Sello (35) of Bophelong was hit-and-run by the unknown vehicle. He died on the scene. Police urge any witnesses to come forward. Too much caffeine is bad for you
It’s that time of year when everyone consumes more than the average amount of caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that increases your heart rate and metabolism. Consumed in moderation, caffeine makes you feel more alert and energetic. Coffee is also known to be a mild diuretic (making you want to urinate more often). increase your blood pressure. People who are sensitive to caffeine and those with high blood pressure should avoid caffeinated drinks. If you are pregnant, you should also decrease your caffeine intake. If you consume too much caffeine in a short space of time, it can make you shaky and give you a headache, so it isn’t a good idea to start the day with 3 double espressos no matter how tired you are. Midvaal embraces agriculture MEYERTON. - A sense of contentment recently descended on the Meyerton Town Hall. This was when Midvaal Local Municipal Executive Mayor Bongani Baloyi delivered his first State of the Mayoral Address (SOMA): “Although the journey still continues, it is clear Midvaal Local Municipality has a lot of achievements to celebrate this day,” This was welcomed by those who attended. Baloyi’s speech touched on fundamental issues such as Education, Economic Transformation and Service Delivery in the area. On the issue of economic transformation in the area, Baloyi urged Midvaal residents to be forward thinkers. “The Gauteng Premier discussed the need to unlock the agricultural potential of Sedibeng as the food basket of the Gauteng City Region and position the region
as an Agropolis, which is exactly what Midvaal has been working on,” said Baloyi. Baloyi states that Agriculture is the main land-use in the municipality, yet the municipality has with concern noted that employment within this sector and its overall contribution to the local economy is very low: “In strengthening our commitment towards agriculture, we are devising an agricultural policy that will see us involved in a range of agricultural projects.” On the issue of housing, Baloyi stated that the Council had already approved plans for the upgrading of Sicelo Shiceka Ext 4 & 5, where the plan is to consolidate and re-subdivide the properties into residential, business and community facility stands: “The areas not developable will be allocated as Public Open Space areas. MEYERTON. - It was a first of its kind when the BASF Novice River Race hosted by Watuni Canoe Club kicked off the new river racing season on April 18. The club is based at the North West University (NWU) Vaal Triangle Campus on the banks of the Vaal River. Although the weather on the day was not
favourable for the race, the new paddlers enjoyed the warm sun, which ended up clearing the clouds for an enjoyable race. “The race was especially short to accommodate learner paddlers. It took place from Henley On Klip, off the R59, and finished in Meyerton, a distance of nearly 15km,” says Jennie Dallas from the Gauteng Canoe Union.

“Glen Sinclair and Dave Ivy are long time residents on the banks of the Klip River and are frequently found enjoying the river, but have not been serious racers for some years as they have been concentrating on their businesses and families. However, this year they have issued a challenge to other over-50 paddlers and the race is on.”
While there were a number of new paddlers from all areas of Gauteng, some experienced paddlers also enjoyed the opportunity to get back on to the river after a few months layoff, in some cases even a few years. “The two finished third overall as the first Master Age paddlers and are looking forward to the race season ahead,” Dallas concludes.

The annual Inter-District Bowls Tournament was contested between the 20 districts at various venues all over the country from March 9 to 14 . Each district sent in an Open Team, a B-Team and a Senior Team, each consisting of eight bowlers. The Sedibeng Men’s Open team played in Durban and had to play against nine other teams during the week. They won most of their matches and advanced to the finals match on the Friday.
Their opponents in the finals, the Johannesburg Bowls Association team, were a very formidable group of bowlers as there were six current Springboks among them. Skip George Lotter (jnr) spoke to his team like a big brother before the start of the game: “Don’t let their reputation put you off, just play your game. We already have silver and we have nothing to lose although gold would be a bonus.” And this is exactly what they did. The JBA team didn’t know what hit them
and was beaten. The Sedibeng team had been the underdogs of this final competition but when the spectators saw what was happening on the greens, they started cheering Sedibeng boisterously and showed their support each time they scored a point against the JBA favourites. The Sedibeng team finally got 38 out of a possible 45 points for the whole week and thus won gold – a first for Sedibeng. The Sedibeng ladies who witnessed this tri-
umph were ecstatic and let everyone know by SMSs about this news. “Well done, Paul, Chris, Georgie, George, TC, Jimmy, Phil and Willie! We are proud of you,” said Tommie Louw, President of Sedibeng Bowls. Tommie was not only congratulated on his team’s champion performance, but also on their good behaviour throughout the week.
