Tutudesks bring joy!

BOPHELONG. - Pupils of Seeiso Primary School were over the moon when they received 1 200 Tutudesks from Amway South Africa. The Tutudesks are named after Archbishop Desmond Tutu. They are portable and provide a stable work surface for impoverished schools that have little or no permanent facilities. The desks were donated on March 16. Raj Parshotam, general manager (GM) of Amway South Africa explains that the future of the continent depends on the level of education children receive. Without basic facilities like desks, pupils face an uphill battle: “By providing this proven solution, we aim to inspire and give these pupils a head start.” Majorobela Mokhothu, principal of the school said: “The children will feel empowered by the inclusion of desks. Pupils have a sense of pride. I am positive that this adds to the willingness of pupils to attend classes. This has a direct impact on their development.” Salona Mabotje, head of department, and Molefe Motale deputy principal, said that the school is blessed with such wonderful help from the company. The ball is in the pupils court to produce better results. “After receiving the desks, we don’t expect any excuse from the children.” Shane Immelman, COO Desmond Tutu Tutudesk Campaign Centre, said this goal will only be made possible through the ongoing support of strategic Programme Partners like Amway: “Millions of African school children are severely prejudiced in their educational experience by the lack of access to a classroom desk.” Motale said the children can only improve their literacy development and academic performance outcomes.

Changing the world one project at a time

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Vaal Mall management together with a number of their tenants - Bidvest Bank, Dischem, King Pie, Pick n Pay and Wakaberry recently visited the Bophelong Children’s Home in order to make a change in the lives of children. The project forms part of Vaal Mall’s “Mandela Day is Every Day” initiative that aims to better the lives of people in the community on a more regular basis and not only once a year for a couple of minutes. Combined, they are able to donate non-perishable food, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as toiletries and kitchen necessities. The Bophelong Children’s Home houses 55 children at any given time, most left destitute or abandoned at the Sebokeng Hospital. Seven permanent staff members take care of them under the supervision of Mama Emily.

Solidariteit Helpende Hand het pas ’n nasionale platform bekendgestel waar persone as potensiële pleegouers kan registreer. Die organisasie beoog om die dringende behoefte aan pleegouers met behulp van hierdie platform te takel. Helpende Hand kry gereeld met maatskaplike gevalle te doen en werk nou saam met maatskaplike organisasies soos die Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) en die Christelike Maatskaplike Raad (CMR). Dié organisasies ondervind ’n groot tekort aan pleegouers. Helpende Hand het daarom besluit om saam met hierdie organisasies ’n platform te skep om dié probleem aan te pak. Volgens Isabel Faurie, maatskaplike werker by Helpende Hand, weet mense wat pleegouers wil word dikwels nie watter proses om te volg nie. Daarenteen het maatskaplike organisasies ’n dringende behoefte aan pleegouers, maar geen manier om hulle te identifiseer of te kontak nie. Helpende Hand se nuwe platform sal skakeling tussen die onderskeie partye bewerkstellig en vergemaklik. Die organisasie het egter geen statutêre magte nie en is nie by die keuring van pleegouers of die plasing van kinders in pleegsorg betrokke nie. Volgens Annette van Loggerenberg, bestuurder van CMR-Noord, is daar landswyd ’n reusebehoefte aan pleegouers. Sy verduidelik dat CMR-Noord slegs dienste aan Gauteng, Noordwes en Limpopo lewer, maar dat

daar in hierdie drie provinsies elke jaar ’n behoefte aan ongeveer 200 pleegouers is. Verskeie faktore dra by tot die tekort aan pleegouers, insluitend die uitdagings wat met pleegsorg gepaardgaan. “Pleegsorg is ’n groot verantwoordelikheid omdat pleegouers verantwoordelikheid aanvaar vir die daaglikse versorging van ander persone se biologiese kinders,” verduidelik Van Loggerenberg. “Kinders wat by pleegouers geplaas word, is dikwels erg getraumatiseerd en hul moeilike gedrag stel hoë eise aan pleegouers. Weens emosionele en fisiese verwaarlosing het die kinders dikwels verskeie gesondheidsprobleme en kognitiewe agterstande.” Maatskaplike organisasies bied ondersteuning aan pleegouers om die proses te vergemaklik. “CMR-Noord bied ’n driedag-opleidingskursus aan potensiële pleegouers en gee ook vir hulle ’n handleiding om hulle vir die uitdagings van pleegsorg voor te berei. Bylers se ‘74 matrieks hou reünie

VANDERBIJLPARK. - In ‘n tydvlak van die jaar wanneer matrieks hul asem begin ophou in afwagting op hul eindresultate en onderwysers en leerlinge begin uitsien na ‘n lang vakansie, het die Hoërskool Vanderbijlpark ‘n onverwagte meevaller gekry. Die matrieks wat in 1974 aan dié hoërskool gematrikuleer het, het tydens hul 40jarige reünie ‘n fondsinsameling gehou ten bate van hul alma mater. Op dié wyse is R15 000 ingesamel. Die destydse hoofseun, Louwtjie Jansen van Rensburg, het dit onlangs aan die huidige hoof, Abrie Botha, oorhandig. Tydens dieselfde geleentheid is daar ook ‘n bundel “Fynsout” nuusblaaie van 1974, asook ‘n kunswerk, geskep deur een van die oudleerlinge, Isabel du Preez, aan Abrie oorhandig. “Fynsout” was ‘n interne nuusblad wat in die vroeë sestigerjare deur leerlinge geskep is en ‘n paar dekades lank die lig gesien het. Dit was veral die Maanskynhoekie, ‘n rubriek in dié blad, wat altyd baie aftrek gekry het, en die gedeelte in elke uitgawe geword het wat die meeste gelees is. “Daar word tans oorweging gegee om die nuusblad in ‘n nuwe gedaante te laat herleef,” het Abrie gesê.

Change must be embraced by all Moleboheng Chaha

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A huge debate was recently sparked by Sedibeng District Municipal (SDM) Mayor Simon Mahole Mofokeng. This was recently when he delivered the 2015 Human Rights Lecture at the North West University (NWU) Vaal Campus. Mofokeng said, “When I was asked to come and give this Memorial Lecture I reflected on three things. Firstly, I remembered how the death of 69 protesters and the serious maiming of 180 others by the apartheid security forces on March 21 of 1960. This became a turning point in the struggle for freedom and human dignity. “The unarmed protestors were protesting against the hated `dompasess’ – which racially barred the majority of South Africans from enjoying their full rights to citizenship.”

Mofokeng sparked statements that the racial struggles were not yesterday’s issues, but reflected a struggle that still affected learners - especially in Higher Learning Institutions - struggles they have to deal with even today. While VUT Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Gordon Zide agreed with these statements from students, his words were that `change must be embraced by all’. Zide said, “In order for transformation to happen, it needs to be embraced by all. Our institutions need change-makers who are the people who can really form part of a mainstream transformation.” On matters of education, Mofokeng said, “There are still inequalities, especially in education, that originate from the past. According to research 35 percent of the first-years drop out after their first year in higher education. Many factors cause this dropout-rate, such as financial aid and so on.” Mofokeng told students that the municipality was doing everything in its power to help with financial aid to needy students. “You as students need to study in faculties that can help develop the Sedibeng region.” Mofokeng added that this region’s `niche’ had been identified as water (hydropolis) and that the mentality of people has to be geared towards what it is that water can do to grow the economy in Sedibeng. The event was attended by dignitaries from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the NWU, local municipalities and students in general.

Do you suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome? By Donna van der Merwe (Optometrist) Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is probably one of the eye conditions I encounter most in my everyday life as an optometrist in the Vaal Triangle. I have been practicing here since 1997 and am always surprised by how few people realise that they have an actual condition that needs to be treated on a daily basis. People generally complain that their eyes just feel sore and tired, especially after a long day in front of the computer, or burn a lot when reading and watching TV. Here are some Dry Eye questions answered: What is a Dry Eye? Basically, it just means that there are not enough tears in the eye. The natural tear film keeps the surface of the eye moist, lubricates the inside of the eyelids (makes blinking comfy), nourishes the eye and cleans and protects the eye by washing away foreign particles. It also keeps the corneal surface stable end even. This all means that when the tears stop working properly, your eyes no longer feel comfortable and your vision becomes unstable. What does a Dry Eye feel like? Typical symptoms include: Burning sensation Blurred vision that comes and goes Red eyes Sandy, gritty feeling in eyes Eyes that tear a lot, especially when concentrating Increased light sensitivity Decreased contact lens tolerance White, stringy discharge What causes Dry Eye? Dry Eye basically occurs if the tear production is inadequate or when tears evaporate excessively. Environmental Factors: fans; air conditioners; heaters; dry and windy climate conditions; working in dry and dusty environments Lifestyle Factors: smoking; medica-

tions such as anti-depressants, antihistamines, decongestants, oral contraceptives and many more; focusing for hours on a tablet, cell phone or computer or TV screen; excessive reading or needlework; driving long distances regularly Physical Factors: aging (causes a natural reduction in tear production); certain medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, menopause, lupus, HIV and thyroid problems. What can be done about a Dry Eye? Lubricating eye drops and gels: Just as with any chronic condition you might suffer from, a dry eye needs to be treated daily. A lubricating eye drop should be used. Make sure that it is formulated for a Dry Eye, and not for allergies or infections. Remember a Dry Eye doesn’t go away when you use the occasional drop, or when your eyes feel better. Drops should be used daily for as long as the environmental, lifestyle and physical factors listed above are present in your life. Supplements: Fish oils like Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Flaxseed Oil are often recommended.Proper sunglasses: Using a quality pair of sunglasses helps reduce the light sensitivity symptoms and keeps the wind away from your eyes. Make sure the lenses have sufficient UV protection. Polarized lenses are highly recommended.Humidifier: Use a humidifier in winter near burning heaters and fires and in summer when the aircon or fan is on. Not sure if you have a Dry Eye? Funda says the woman moves about pretending that she is looking for employment as a domestic worker:“On the very first day after being is offered a job, she waits for the employer to go shopping, work or to go visiting. She then takes everything she can lay her hands on and vanishes,” says Funda. This photo was taken by a complainant in one of the houses where she was offered work. Loadshedding...are you prepared? MEYERTON . - Eskom recently announced its implementation of stage 2 loadshedding. According to Eskom, this is due to a shortage of generation capacity. This has resulted in a lot of confusion and speculation amongst Vaal Triangle residents regarding load shedding and how schedules work. Midvaal Local Municipality has found a better way to explain all of this, including a how-to guide that will get residents through `dark’ days. There are three sources of electricity in the region, namely Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), Midvaal Local Municipality and mainstream electricity supplier Eskom. The Midvaal Municipality understands the frustration of residents and is currently en-

gaging with Eskom to have schedules provided for all areas of Midvaal. Media Liaison officer Aaliyah Dangor says, “Residents can off-set load shedding by reducing energy consumption in both residential and business areas by following easy tips, such as turning off electrical devices which are not in use, choosing to use a clothes line than using a tumble-dryer, buying energy efficient light bulbs, installing a solar geyser, controlling the amount of hot water usage at home.” Dangor adds that while energy efficiency is important, people must also think about being ready for load shedding. “There are many things that can be used in the absence of electricity, such as solar

lighting, gas heaters and stoves, including candles and generators.” Dangers are associated with some of these products but they can really be useful if precautions are taken. All these products though will enable residents to continue with their household chores. “Load shedding can be such a pain, especially during the winters when it gets dark very quickly and the weather is ice cold. This is something that can happen at anytime and

residents need to be ready at all times,” Dangor concludes.

BESTANDDELE: 1 Rooibokboud 250 g spek, in 3 cm repies gesny 1 koppie rooi asyn 2 tlp sout 2 tlp bruin suiker ‘n handvol rosyntjies 2 groot knoffelhuisies, gekap 1 tlp peper ½ tlp gemaalde gemmer Vir die marinade benodig u: 1 gesnyde ui 1 lourierblaar 6 heel naeltjies 3 koppies rooiwyn 2 tlp olie Vir die verglansing benodig u: 4 tlp fyn appelkooskonfyt 2 tlp meel 4 tlp sjerrie METODE: Plaas spek, 2 tlp asyn, 1 tlp sout en 1 tlp

suiker in ’n klein houer en marineer dit so 45 minute. Maak gaatjies in die wildsboud met ‘n skerp mes en vul dit met ‘n rosyntjie, ‘n stukkie knoffel en spek. Meng peper, gemmer, die oorblywende sout en suiker en vryf dit met die hand in die boud. Gebruik ‘n bakpan groot genoeg vir die boud en meng die bestanddele vir die marinade met die oorblywende asyn. Laat die mengsel kook en voeg die boud dan by. Draai die boud so 10 minute totdat dit rondom geseël het. Verwyder dit van die hitte en laat dit in die marinade afkoel. As dit verkoel het, los dit 24 uur in ‘n koel plek en draai dit ‘n paar keer om. Plaas die boud in ‘n bakpan met Die smaaklike Rooibokboud ‘n koppie marinade en sit dit 10 minute in ‘n oond wat tot 220°C voorverhit is die vleis gereeld en voeg meer marinade by wanneer nodig. om te skroei. Meng die meel, konfyt en sjerrie en smeer Verlaag die hitte tot 180°C vir die oorblywende baktyd. Bak dit tussen 8 en 10 minute dit oor die vleis om dit oor die laaste 10 minuper 500 g vleis vir rou tot halfgaar. Bedruip te te verglans.

Wanner dit gaar is, sit die boud op ‘n opdienbord en laat dit in ‘n warm plek rus vir 10 tot 15 minute. Bedien met groente en geel rosyne. Bron: Proud Hunter

Councillors, officials and the community at large recently took part in the Midvaal90.6fm inaugural Fun Walk for Human Rights Day.

Fun Walk a huge success MEYERTON. - The Midvaal-90.6fm inaugural Fun Walk for Human Rights Day was a huge success and was attended by all. Local businesses, NPOs, families and school children all geared up to take part in the event that would contribute to charity. The 5km route began in Mitchell Street and went through Meyerton into Sicelo. The atmosphere was buzzing, with children

singing, and various groups chanting their own war cries along the way. Several groups also dressed up in `wacky’ costumes to set the mood for the entire day. Midvaal Local Municipal Media Liason officer Aaliyah Dangor says: “There were several stalls set up at the municipal grounds, including the `Stand with Stan’ Stall displaying different types of prosthetic limbs, the CAN-
