SEDIBENG. - For the fourth consecutive term Simon ‘Sy’ Mofokeng has been reelected Sedibeng regional chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC). Mofokeng is also the current Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality. A threeday, contentious but peaceful regional con-

ference was hosted at the Saint George Hotel in Pretoria over the weekend. The conference took place under the watchful eye and close to the ear of provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile. Following a long campaign season amongst two cores that came to be known as ‘Sy-Train’ (led by Mofokeng) and ‘ToyBob’ (led by Toy Manqa and former Secre-

tary Bob Mthembu), Mofokeng came out victorious. The top five regional office bearers elected by the 268 registered delegates are: Mofokeng (chairperson), Robert Thema (deputy chairperson), Bheki Ngobese (secretary), Lerato Maloka (deputy secretary) and Melina Gomba ( treasurer). Twenty ( 20) additional members that include Maipato Tso-

kolibane, Sello Pitso, Zaza Raikane, Jason Mkhwane, Velile Mkhontwane, Bassie Ramagaga, Christina Sale and former deputy chairperson and current Emfuleni Local Municipality mayor Gretha Hlongwane who came in last were also elected. Commenting on the victory, Mofokeng said it was the intention of, ‘Operation Sy-Train’ to win fair. “We have really accomplished our mission. To be elected four times is history in the lives of Sedibeng residents. Thanks can only go to the branches for their trust in me and the executive committee. We assured and promised the communities that we as the ANC would work together with them - including all the ousted members. We will take it up from where the last committee members left off to carry the flag of residents and that of the ANC high. We will always continue listening to the crisis of the communities we serve with pride,” he said. Amongst the projects that Mofokeng says they will implement are those such as job creation, poverty elimination, education and equality. Bob Mthembu said they had worked positively with good preparation as the ANC unilaterally: “We have served our people as per the constitution of the ANC. Together we will mobilise to prepare the ANC in the region for the 2016 elections.” Congratulations went to the newly elected executive committee. Mlungisi Hlongwane, president of the South African Civic Organisation (SANCO), said the conference was well organised through political support from the REC and that the ANC has a better constitution to lead over the next years. A statement issued by SANCO Sedibeng says, “ We further wish to congratulate the elected leadership collective led by comrades Mahole Simon Mofokeng and Bheki Ngobese as Regional Chairperson and Regional Secretary respectively. As we stated in our message of support, we are keen and ready to act in partnership with the democratically elected leadership of this glorious movement to pursue programmes that will benefit the community of Sedibeng.

Pensioner killed for suspected witchcraft Mduduzi Mathebula

TSHEPISO. - A 72-year-old pensioner succumbed to her injuries at Baragwanath Hospital on Monday following a beating after being accused of witchcraft. Pensioner Theodora Nono Makooa was beaten to a pulp two weeks back by a suspect who claimed that he found her flying around. Following the beating she was taken to Sebokeng Hospital before being transfered to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in Chris Baragwaneth Hospi-

tal where she died on Monday morning. Sedibeng Ster went to the scene of the incident where devastated neighbours were very emotional: “I know the old woman. She picks up empty bottles every now and then, everybody knows her. I don’t know where the crazy bastard got the idea that Gogo Nono was a witch,” this was one reaction from a neighbour. Matsoso Motaung, another neighbour, says he heard a man screaming on the day (kemo thotse, kemo thotse moloi) - “I found her, I

found the witch.” Motaung says he woke up to see what was happening. To his surprise it was Makooa being beaten up by some guy who claimed she’d been flying. Moeketsi Makooa had to drive from Mozambique to attend the aftermath of his mother’s mishap: “I still can’t make sense of this matter. My mother was known for recycling cans and bottles. I don’t understand why she was accused of witching. I just hope justice plays its role.” The suspect was arrested and is out on bail.

Nono Makooa was allegedly beaten to death by a local known man who claimed that the old woman was a witch.

DA fights against drug and substance abuse Moleboheng Chaha

SEBOKENG. - The Democratic Alliance in Ward 31 recently launched their Anti Drug and Substance Abuse Campaign at the Lebohang Centre in Zone 10. The campaign was launched under the theme “Drugs are everyone’s problem.”’ The event was attended by the community at large, including officials and non-governmental organisations, NGOs. DA Sedibeng caucus leader Dady Mollo delivered the keynote address at the event. Mollo said the reason drugs are such a big problem in society is because they are a direct link to criminal activity: “People commit crime to feed their habits and, while they are under the influence of addictive substances,

they often become violent and abusive. So reducing the level of drug and alcohol abuse will go a long way towards reducing crime.” Said Mollo: “I have a drug problem. I don’t use drugs, but they still affect me. If you have a drug problem or know someone who needs help, please contact SANCA for help or visit our local centre in Zone 14 near the shopping complex.” Mollo told the community that it needed to be united and fight against drug abuse as it is very popular in the Sebokeng Area. DA members encouraged residents to report known drug dealers to Police, help drug users access treatment options and help educate young people on the risks associated with drug usage. “The Democratic Alliance will play its part by reaching as many residents as possible through this extensive campaign. We are asking all residents of the Ward to help us fight this serious problem as part of a concerted awareness campaign,” Mollo concluded.

The Democratic Alliance in Ward 31 recently launched its campaign against the abuse of drugs and substances at the Lebohang Centre in Zone 10.

Not told, then fired for being HIV positive Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG.- A 46-year-old mother of three from Bophelong was recently fired and then recalled but demoted to a contract worker after her employees discovered her HIV status without her even knowing it. According to the victim, Susan Seliane, she herself did not know her status. She wonders how her employers got to know of it without her knowledge. “I only knew that I was positive after I was

told by a colleague who is manager in a different plant from mine. The news killed me inside since people knew about my status without me knowing,” says Seliane. She claims she’s been working for the company for over nine years. The most painful part of her experience is that her child works in the same company with her. “Even he knew about my status before me. He underwent the humiliation that I went through,” says Seliane. After the disclosure by the manager, Seliane says that she went to test and found out that indeed she was positive. “I don’t understand how my status was given to my superiors without me knowing. Surely that is a violation of my rights,” says the devastated woman. “This colleague who is a manager at the company asked my line manager to fire me. Ever since then, I have been treated like a dog. I was even asked to use a different kitchen and sometimes stopped from entering the premises,” says the distraught Seliane,

who is seeking help. Seliane has reports from work which show every incident and how her rights were violated. She has written to the Human Rights Commission and the case is also still pending at the Labour Department and the CCMA. Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) was contacted about the matter and the organisation’s Lebohang Pitso says they are keen to get to the bottom of the matter.

Those who are unaware of history are doomed to repeat mistakes.

The recent defacing and removal of statues around the country without following correct procedures (If there is a need at all for their removal) must be condemned to the fullest. I believe that a person who does not know where he comes from will never know where is going. Removing the statues is the same as removing our Heritage which forms an important part of our history, both black and

white. It is said that history repeats itself, but we are only doomed to relive our past if we fail to learn from it. The past is not a map to where you are going; it’s a record of where you have been. Its purpose is not to drag you back through emotional muck, but to serve you best by reminding you of lessons learned so you can avoid them in the future. Heritage is the history, unique knowledge, values and traditions that have developed by a combina-

tion of genes and environment over time. Heritage, whether it be national, cultural, or family is an endowment of unique sets of historical knowledge; but foremost, heritage is your history. It is responsible for how we came to be, it is a very large part of whom and what we are and it can determine what we will become. Not everyone feels a connection with their cultural heritage, but many people do. What is it about cultural heritage that draws these people to it? Some may think traditions are

archaic and no longer relevant, and that they are unnecessary during these modern times. Perhaps for some, they aren’t; but for others like me exploring cultural heritage offers a robust variety of benefits. Do not run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going. ~from “Peace” by author unknown Lerato…

Sedibeng Tourism Awards 2015 Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG. - The Sedibeng District Municipality recently hosted the Sedibeng Tourism Awards. The Sedibeng Tourism Awards has grown in momentum since its inauguration in 2010. The number of entries in all categories has steadily increased each year and the Awards have become a highlight of the Vaal - and Gauteng’s - social and tourism calendar. This year, the significance of the Awards was heightened by the attendance of Deputy Tourism Minister Tokozile Xasa, the Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng, Acting Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Sello Pitso, the Midvaal Local Municipality Mayor Bongani Baloyi, the Tourism SA CEO Thulani Nzima, representatives from the Gauteng Tourism Authority and the newly appointed Board of Directors of the Vaal River City Tourism Promotion Company

SOC LTD (an entity of the Sedibeng District Municipality). In his Welcome address Mofokeng said, “Visitors who share good magical memories and experiences are our most effective ambassadors for promoting Sedibeng. “We are striving to improve the quality of services and products through the annual Sedibeng Tourism Awards programme.” To conjure up this magical night, in which both the winners and finalists of the Sedibeng Tourism Awards 2015 were honoured, and to showcase the region as a superior destination of choice, the Sedibeng District Municipality delved into the Vaal’s bag of tricks to put on a show of distinction! African youth leaders launch new campaign on corporate accountability and development rights Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG. - Amnesty International in partnership with the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa will hold a two-day roundtable debate on corporate accountability in the social and economic lives of Africa’s youth at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on April 10. The roundtable will critique the “Africa Rising” narrative of a future rooted in economic growth alone and suggest alternative models. It will bring together 20 remarkable young human rights champions from across Africa at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as part of a two-day roundtable dialogue on corporate accountability in the social and economic

lives of Africa’s youth. The participants of the roundtable were drawn from diverse backgrounds and sectors that span all sub-regions of the African continent. They come from Kenya, Mauritius, Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt and elsewhere, representing well-established youth constituencies in their respective countries, and have been championing human rights issues. The participants are between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. The youth-led gathering aims to deconstruct the “Africa Rising” narrative using a human rights lens in order to expose the contradictions of economic growth in relation to youth unemployment, deepening youth po-

verty and rising youth inequalities. “Despite the euphoria surrounding Africa’s growth projections over the past several years, inequalities – - fuelled by high unemployment and deeply entrenched poverty - continue to undermine the social and economic well being of youth across the region. This is an unacceptable state of affairs with far-reaching implications for human rights and fundamental freedoms,” said Edward Ndopu, Amnesty International’s Regional Activism and Youth Coordinator for Africa. “There is a clear disjuncture between Africa Rising, which – frankly – has become a rather hackneyed narrative, and divorced from the socio-economic realities on the

ground. This, of course, begs the question – for whom is Africa rising? The answer, we believe, must invariably bring us to a deeply critical and nuanced conversation about the role of state and non-state actors in perpetuating the status quo,” said Edward Ndopu. The primary objective of the Africa Youth Roundtable is to generate five recommendations that will be taken to the World Economic Forum on Africa in June 2015 as part of a sustained continent-wide #AfricaNot4Sale campaign for corporate accountability in the social and economic lives of Africa’s youth. I took down his number and booked an appointment with him. He charged me only R100 to read my fortune and showed me my enemies in a mirror and I was shocked. He made them come and confess everything they had done to me as professed by Prophet Shiru. They caused me to break up with my husband and have lots of bad luck. They had done muthi that made my forehead swell and tokoloshe grow inside it. He then performed ritual to remove it and showed ti to me and cured me after that. There’s no other way I can thank Prophet Shiru than telling the whole world about him. He helps with love, luck, marriage, court cases, business, protection etc.

Manco Milano FC challenges for the Fezile Dabi Safa SAB League title.

Manco Milano FC challenges for Fezile Dabi Safa SAB League title

Zacharia Nale

ZAMDELA. - No doubt after two remaining games Manco Milano FC will be crowned champion of the Fezile Dabi SAFA SAB League title. At the time of going to press, this Polokong, Sebokeng-based side is at the summit of the log with 32 points from 13 games. The team record is unbelievable - it won 10 games, drew two and lost one. The team is growing at a rapid pace and urges the community and corporate sector of Sedibeng and Sasolburg to support them. To show they mean business, Manco Milano FC has signed the best players in this region. One of those players is exciting former Golden Arrows midfielder Bonakele Twala. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, club chairman Lebohang Thabanyane says their

focus is not only on the senior team but also on development. He says their vision is to campaign in the ABC Motsepe League next season if they go all out and win the promotional play-offs at the end of the season. He says the club wants to bring competitive and entertaining football back to Sedibeng, formerly the Vaal Triangle. The team remains with less than five games to round off their league programme. Manco Milano FC will travel to Heilbron to lock horns with Black Swallows FC this weekend. Thabanyane says this is a must-win game for them so they can finish the league on the high note: “It will be a great honour to see people from Sedibeng and Sasolburg showing support for the team, especially for the remai-

ning games leading to the playoffs. We also plead with the corporate sector for any kind of assistance as the team is currently within five games and will stand a chance to get to the playoffs that lead to promotion of the playing in second division.” Team Operations Manager Matome Kganakga indicated to Sedibeng Ster Sport that, from the junior ranks of the team, they have started monitoring the school performance of the players and intend to involve players’ parents in future: “One objective of the team is to encourage the youth to take part in sport and also not forget the importance of education. Doing all this will help in terms of reducing the level of drug and alcohol abuse within our communities,” says Kganakga.

EVATON. - Papa Mqwathi was crowned undisputed Evaton Golf Club March Competition champion. The event was held at the Evaton Golf Course recently. This monthly tournament has attracted many local golfers since it was introduced by the Evaton Golf Club. According to Martin Mpholo the number of participants has increased and this is encouraging for the Evaton community. However, Mpholo makes a special plea to the Evaton community to come and support the initiative as it is for a good cause: “This is one sport that used to be popular in Evaton and the very same golf course used to produce professional golfers and legends. As Evaton Golf Course in conjunction with South African Black Golfers we want to keep this legacy alive.” Meanwhile, Mqwathi says he feels very honoured to be crowned the champion of the competition. However, he says it was not easy as he was up against the best: “It was not a walk in the park as the competiton was stiff with all the participants wanting this title. I want to thank everyone for pushing me hard because if they didn’t I don’t think I could have won this tournament.”

Keep up the good work Oliphant Lazarus Dithagiso

BOPHELONG. - All eyes were on the former president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) and SAFA Sedibeng, Dr Molefi Oliphant, during the Tinti’s Bophelong Awards. Dr Oliphant, who contributed to the development of the entire community of Sedibeng in general, was the guest of honour. The glittering function was organised by Tinti Richard Hlathi and was hosted recently at Mqiniswa Primary School, Bophelong. Hlathi said some of the medals were presented to local stakeholders for their contribution to making the function possible: “I am doing this as part of paying back to the community. We need to start where Dr Oliphant left off.” Dr Oliphant extended a word of gratitude and appreciation for what the stakeholders and the organisers had done by putting the community first: “To the stakeholders, including teachers, the Health Department and business owners who made this day a success, I say keep up the good work. Let’s do our best to uplift the lives of the people no matter what society we come from.” Dr Oliphant said: “We become role models by doing our best so that our country can be the best. Go out there and make a contribution.” 16-year-old Tshepo Hlathi requested Dr Oliphant to organise an under-17 soccer tournament. He said the tournament should be named after the doctor. Tshepo said buying soccer kits and trophies would motivate most of the youth in the area.

Sedibeng ball jugglers make name for themselves abroad Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG.- Local ball jugglers are fast making a name for themselves in the world of “freestyle”. These local boys hoisted the Sedibeng flag high when they were invited by the Indian Football Association to perform at the closing ceremony of the India Super League recently. According to Josias “Bingo” Nnete, when they started their ball juggling careers, little

did they know that one day they would end up performing on the big stage – overseas. This exciting former Moroka Swallows midfielder says performing at that level was a dream come true for all of them. Nnete says the Indian Football Association organisers were impressed with these locals’ performance on the day: “We were all nervous performing in front such a big crowd but then had fun and enjoyed

ourselves. We will cherish the moment for the rest of our lives because it is not everyone who can get this opportunity. Indian people really enjoyed our performance and promised to invite us this year again at the end of their league programme.” On the other hand, Nnete acknowledged the support of Sedibeng people since the inception of their unique project. Nnete started his ball juggling career after he retired prematurely from professional foot-

ball. He was one of the exciting players to have emerged from Sedibeng and was hailed as the next Joel ‘Ace’ Mnini when he joined Moroka Swallows. In a heart-to-heart interview with Sedibeng Ster Sport, Nnete says it doesn’t mean that, if you retire from high level football, your career is over. He challenges Sedibeng youngsters never to give up their dreams over the challenges they experience in their football careers.

Without development we are a nation with no culture! There is this belief that Sedibeng, the former Vaal Triangle, needs a professional soccer league. However, TOUCHLINE differs with those who say we need an elite league team in this region. In fact, what we need right now is not a professional soccer team, but a solid foundation or structure from which to produce quality players. There is no structure in this region but some local football administrators, officials and coaches turn a blind eye to it. Look, a professional soccer team is and never will be a solution to our problem. In fact, we should first ask ourselves why household names from teams like Vaal Professionals, A-Z FC, Home Defenders, Rainbow Juventus, Bra Thomas Black, Transvaal Jumpers FC, Early Birds FC, Boipatong Real Rangers FC, Tranvaal X20 FC, Continental FC and Sebokeng Tow For Joy, no longer emerge for South African football? If everyone thinks a professional soccer league is the best solution to problems in this region, they have another think coming! That thought is a big no-no as far as TOUCHLINE is concerned! The above-mentioned teams were supposed to be household names in South African football but none of them exist, as we speak. Vaal Professionals was the pride of the Vaal Triangle but, like other clubs before them, it was relegated from top-flight football.

The club did not have a development structure like itsJohannesburg counterparts Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, to name but several. Without development we are like a nation without culture! This was the downfall of Vaal Professionals and many others teams in this region. There was no solid foundation. Yes, we all want to have a professional soccer team in this region but – first – FOUNDATION and DEVELOPMENT. In football there is no way you can survive without having a proper structure. Local football administrators and club owners have no vision that is why they would rather buy status than have a solid foundation. Another example: You find a SAB League team challenging for the league title but they don’t have development structures. In every family there are children, and development is like our children, in case those SAB League teams are not aware of this. Waking up in the morning and claiming to be challenging for the league title is exactly like somebody who has just regained consciousness in a tavern in the morning. The only time we will get it right in this region is to support those with a solid development structure going forward. TOUCHLINE, touch-and-go till next week!

SEDIBENG. - Bongani “Wonderboy” Mahlangu silenced the Eastern Cape last week Sunday recently champion Siviwe Hasheni in the eighth round. The National Title Challenge – Junior Featherweight Division - was staged right in Hasheni’s home town but the very determined Sedibeng challenger Mahlangu went there with one goal - to fight and be victorious. Mahlangu says the fight was set to go 12 rounds. It was going to be a profound challenge for him to fight the champion till the last round: “I had to put all the puzzle-pieces in the right positions and find a way to knock him out,” says Mahlangu. Things started to fall apart for Hasheni in round five (5) when Mahlangu made him feel he had to fight to survive. Hasheni got tired but survived the hail of Wonderboy’s blows. Hasheni went down but managed to rise again after the fifth round. Mahlangu says, “In the eighth (8th) round I took him down again but he survived due to the count and was saved by the bell. I then went to the corner where my coach told me to fight like a storm because I had fought that man before in the Baby Champs and beat him, so what could possibly stop me now? The other side came prepared, thinking they would defeat me but they were wrong. I did as my coach told me and I gave him my special punch - an uppercut. He felt it and started moving backwards and I felt that I did get into him. “I went again and gave him my uppercut mixed with some more punches for an extra combination, and he was down and they started counting to five. He was still down and his coach threw in the towel and you knew what that meant. It was all over.”

Emfuleni Local Municipal secretary Martin Mpholo says he was overwhelmed by the response of the teams. He believes that this is the best way to kick-start the league programme to educate the teams about the Laws of The Game: “We want to thank everyone who made this meeting a success and I’m

positive going forward that we will have a successful season and a productive four years in office. “We are all motivated by the positive response from the team officials, coaches and players. We are taking our football to the next level.”
