Man’s mysterious death sparks debate

Police investigate further to find Leon's family. Insert: Leon was found dead sitting on a container the morning after emergency personnel told a concerned group that there was nothing wrong with him. Photo: Moleboheng Chaha. Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - Bystanders at Shoprite Checkers on Umtata Street in Three Rivers were recently apalled and voiced their disgust when the corpse of a male carguard (40) sprawled for hours without being removed. The man - known to Sedibeng Ster only as ‘Leon’- had apparently died while he was

sitting on a container and had been left in that position for hours. Bystanders had different opinions on the situation. Some believed Leon’s lifeless body had been heaped with indignity. Others take solace from the fact that he died a peaceful death. Reliable sources told Sedibeng Ster that they noticed Leon was in dire straits the previous night when he called an ambulance:

“When emergency personnel arrived, they just told us that there was nothing wrong with him and that he was just drunk. Then they left.” The source says they were shocked to find Leon dead in the morning. Vereeniging Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda states that Police rushed

to the scene: “The man was c ertified dead by the paramedics on the spot. His family was traced and he was taken to a government mortuary.” Funda adds that the cause of death is still unknown and that the police have opened an inquest to determine the cause of death.

Old hospital residents left stranded

A section of Old Hospital burned down recently, leaving residents stranded. Photo:Moleboheng Chaha Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - Some Old Hospital Residents were left stranded after part of the building was allegedly burned down last week. According to the people who live in the section, they were forced to vacate the burning building with nothing but the little clothing they had on their backs, leaving all of their possessions to be swallowed up by a fire. “We have lost everything, including our Identity Documents. Some of us are job seekers and we will not be able to find employment without documentation. Residents were complaining about the dangers especially faced by the young kids who live in Old Hospital, stating that although there were no fatalities, something could have gone wrong.” Democratic Alliance (DA) ward 15 Councillor Stanley Mashabela says all the departments with the credentials to help with the situation arrived at Old Hospital: “I am going to inform the residents who were affected to calm down as the situation is currently under control.” Mashabela stated that the residents would be helped by the relevant departments. He adds that he has been in talks with the Department of Human Settlements about the progress report following MMC Jacob Mamabolo’s visit to the building: “Mamabolo promised the residents that the department would look into building them RDP houses. I am trying

to find out how far they are with that resolution. But for now we are going to bring residents containers as a temporary solution.” Over the Easter weekend, Mashabela told Sedibeng Ster that nothing much was done by the different departments to help families

SEBOKENG. - Police are looking for three suspects in connection with different crimes committed in the area. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mzimkhulu Mthimkulu says the owner of a house arrived from withdrawing money on November 26 last year. The owner and company were not aware that they had been followed. When they arrived home, they were approached by two male suspects armed with guns. The victims were forced to open the door of the house. Victims were pushed inside and warned not to make noise. After an undisclosed sum of money was seized, the suspects made away on foot, said Mthimkulu. In another case, two suspects entered a house in Zone 17 Sebokeng on October 3 at about 08:10. They bound the legs and wrists of the owner before they ransacked the house. They made away with an undisclosed sum of cash, jewellery, seven pairs of shoes, and two cell phones, said Police. No injuries were reported. Police appeal to members of the public who could identify the suspects to contact Detective Warrant Officer Pienaar on (016) 988 1820.

Suspect to answer to three cases Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - Vereeniging Police have arrested a 23-year-old coloured male for possesion of stolen property in the form of a vehicle and cigarretes with an estimated value of R860 000. He was nabbed also for possession of an unlicenced firearm. According to Vereeniging Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda, the culprit was arrested by the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Roshnee: “Officers on patrol saw a group of CPF members standing in the group and when they approached them they were told they had arrested a suspect who was allegedly in possession of stolen property.” Reports Funda: “The suspect is currently in custody. During our investigations, it was discovered that the panel van found

in the culprit’s possession is connected to a case of vehicle theft in Randfontein and that the cigarettes may be connected to a case of hijacking where similar goods such as cigarettes were recently seized during a hijacking in De Deur.” Funda added that it was unlikely the culprit would be released as he still has two more cases to answer to in De Deur and Randfontein. Funda confirms that a case of possession of stolen property and an unliceneced firearm has been opened against the suspect and that he will soon appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court.

Community boycott new contractor

Lazarus Dithagiso

SHARPEVILLE. - The Department of Social Development will spend more than R7 million after the completion of the Early Childhood Development (EDC) project through a social grant. The structure was left to perish incomplete in about 2012. It received another boost of R3,6 million though provincial initiatives. The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) is the custodian of the property as they own the land. The Emfuleni Health and Social Develoment MMC Councillor Sello Pitso said they have recruited Makgothamisha Building Construction at R3,6 million for the second phase. He said the contractor had already started erecting a wall. Letlapa has been terminated for non performance, said MMC Pitso. However, this did not bode well for the Community Development Initiative (CDI). The project stopped pending further explanation by the local government on May 7. CDI spokesperson Rakgadi Seetsi said until they received further explanation from the municipality, Ward Councillor, main contractor and community liaison officer regarding the process followed, no work would be carried on. Letlapa - a Pretoria contractor stopped working when it allegedly demanded more money from the provincial government. Apparently Letlapa was funded over R3,3 million to finish the structure. Seetsi said the matter was brought to the

attention of ELM Mayor Gretha Hlongwane and her speaker Cllr MP Gqoloshe: “We want to know what happened with the 10% of the money remaining for Letlapa. Initially that money was supposed to be issued after a job well done.” She said, “Disrupting services or barricading roads is not our strength unless the government so wishes.” Currently on the capital adjustment budget

for the 2014/15 Social Infrastructure grant the project still appears. This has raised eyebrows in the Democratic Alliance (DA). The DA said according to the monetory and evaluation report of the second quarter of the October - December 2014 and 2014/15 financial year: Neither the contractor or any activity has been taking place on site since 2012. Instead further damage has been realised,

namely: disconnected electricity wires, falling ceilings from the truss and broken windowpanes. “Inevitably, in terms of the monetory and evaluation report, there’s neither a project number nor project amount, no project contractor, no project duration, no commencement date, no completion date, and no registration with the municipal infrastructure grant fund,” Seetsi ends.

Some members of the Community Development Initiative in Kensington prevented Makgothamisha Building Construction from going ahead with the second phase of the Early Childhood Development Centre after Letlapa Construction allegedly disappeared without having completed the work, according to the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) MMC for Social Development, Sello Pitso. VEREENIGING. - A loanshark exchanged words with this journalist on Wednesday during his arrest. The arrest was because the loanshark was operating without a licence, which led Police to apprehend him and hold him. Police received a complaint about activities at The Hangar ABSA ATM in Voortrekker Street earlier that very same day. Police responded to the complainant’s call and on arrival found a 45-year-old male in possession of 86 SASAA cards (South African Social Security Agency), R45 000 in bank notes and 46 identity books. He further confessed to Police that he was an unregistered loanshark. He was then arrested for possession of suspected stolen property, fraud and money laundering. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says the suspect will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court. “We found 86 SASSA cards, and 46 Identity Documents (ID). We are very concerned about members of the community having their private particulars in another man’s possession. It is very dangerous for a person’s bank card to be in someone else’s possession,” says Funda. He adds that Police would investigate the matter further.

Change is inevitable

Embracing the unknown and tackling something new can be very daunting, but my speeches presentations on ‘change’ offer a multitude of reasons why change is very beneficial for one’s personal and professional life. This I told someone over the Easter holidays.

For some, change is exciting but, for others, it can be extremely unsettling and many aren’t capable of adapting to new situations. When we begin to realise that change is not something to be feared and avoided, we can learn to let go of the fear of change. We can let go of the part of us that has been refusing to change, often causing considerable stress to our systems. When we try to avoid change of any kind, we create tension and

stress throughout the body. We keep our energy from flowing more freely through places in the body, and this causes more stress. Our bodies are supposed to flow with change and our avoidance of it causes stress. When you do realise this, you will feel the relief. Your body doesn’t like it when you try to hold back change. All the cells of your body are changing every instant. All your body’s processes go on unnoticed brin-

ging change everywhere. When you try to hold back any of the inevitable forms of change in your life, the body gets confused and shuts down in some ways. This causes tension, stress, all kinds of discomfort for you. The only way to accept change is to realise that it is inevitable, that no matter what we do we can’t keep it from happening. Lerato...

More clinics and ECD to be erected: Cllr Pitso Lazarus Dithagiso

SEBOKENG. - “We are moving in the right direction, listening to the plight of the communities, communicating well with the province,” said Emfuleni MMC for Health and Social Development Sello Pitso. Gauteng Province is at the receiving end of all the provinces surrounding it. A Social Development Stakeholders Assembly Forum that included the provincial and national departments of Health was called by the office of Cllr Pitso at the Saul Tsotetsi Sport Complex for May 2. The meeting is called after three months so the MMC can listen to all stakeholders from different sectors to reassure the community as to the challenges they experience. The Health Department, directors for social services, clinics, and communities were invited. A new clinic will soon be built in Boitumelo,” he said: “Plans are underway to erect Early Child-

hood Development Centres (ECD) in Boipatong and Evaton. This is in line with the ECD motto: ‘Children are our future, our treasure - invest in them’, as part of primary health care. He adds that the MEC for Health will visit the area soon. Due to population increases, the government is trying to build more local clinics and add rooms to the current ones. On the shortage of drugs, Pitso said small clinics do not have enough space or fridges to keep certain medications. The medications are transported as per request to avoid expiry. The government will always strive to ensure that the community receives better health-care in all clinics: “No patient will receive expired medications. I totally disagree with the complaint from the public that they always receive `panados’ despite their different sicknesses.

Battery Centre & Ster Competition The most important check you can make on your vehicle battery: the warranty

Car battery failure isn’t scheduled like load shedding. It can happen when you least expect it. Finding a reliable, quality car battery can be tricky, but if you look out for a long-term guarantee, you’re halfway there.

A warranty is essentially the company’s seal of approval on their product. SA’s leading battery manufacturers, First National Battery, offer the only genuine nationwide guarantee – a two-year product warranty on the complete ‘Raylite’ Enhanced Flooded

Battery (EFB) range. The warranty is valid at any one of First National Battery’s franchise outlets - Battery Centre - nationwide, regardless of whether it was bought at that branch or from a different stockist altogether.

“If it’s a manufacturing fault, and is in the warranty period, it will be replaced – no hassle,” says Marketing Director of Battery Centre, Andrew Webb. “Moreover, our Battery Centres are equipped to establish the most likely cause of the battery failure by performing a free-of-charge battery assessment. In some cases, the battery itself isn’t faulty and our battery specialists are able to advise on how to eliminate the problem – saving you the unnecessary cost of replacing a battery that doesn’t need replacing,” he adds. Choose high-quality, reap the benefits. When it comes to replacing a battery, think long term. A cheap battery might save you a few rands now, but could end up costing you a lot more in the long run. All Battery Centres nationwide stock the technologically advanced Raylite EFB range. Designed as a cost-effective solution for cars using start/stop technology, these batteries offer exceptional performance and are an excellent choice for all vehicle makes and models. “These batteries are also fully recyclable and under normal operating conditions will not require any maintenance,” concludes Webb. BOPHELONG. - ArcelorMittal South Africa handed over four refurbished classrooms and a newly built jungle gym for Grade R and Grade 1 learners of Seeiso Primary School in Bophelong. The hand-over was to school principal Johannes Mokhutho and his committee recently and took place among representatives of the Sedibeng District Department of Education. The project forms part of the ArcelorMittal Foundation’s global Solidarity Holidays Programme where employees from around the world have an opportunity to spend part of their annual leave volunteering for a Foundation project in a foreign country. SAPS expresses unity with God Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Koinonia Bible Church hosted the men and women in blue, the first defence of the country. This was when they held their Easter prayer on Wednesday. The prayer was conducted by Sebokeng SAPS, which was a great success according to the masses that attended the event. “This was a great initiative for us as Police to go back to our Lord and savior. We are very fulfilled by the word of God - revived as we march on to our different positions and serve our communities,” says Colonel Molutsi, the programme director. It was praise and jubilation as the SAPS glorified the name of Jesus. The programme was very lengthy, with numerous speakers from different denominations coming to embark with the SAPS on their Easter prayer. Many were given a chance on the pulpit. They gave their messages from the word of God, encouraging each other’s work in what is a very challenging career - which needs God’s intervention at all times. All Sebokeng cluster representatives were given a moment to issue their words of encouragement to colleagues. Brigadier Masha

says criminals have nothing to lose: “They do as they please at any given time. We need to be as brutal as they are and be ahead of them mentally and spiritually.” This message conveyed considerable zeal to the SAPS, to

know their position in the community and their value to society. Zero tolerance toward criminals was promised. Police vowed to work their hearts out over Easter and beyond.

me together with local contracting companies and built and upgraded the school with much needed facilities for the pupils. “We work closely with the Department of Education to identify schools close to our operations that have pressing needs.” These were words of Prudence Masike of ArcelorMittal. It was attested by local councillor Mabuthi Bikisha that Seeiso Primary School is servicing a growing population. There is a requirement to increase the uptake of learners into the school, which is putting pressure on the existing facilities|: “We are plead that ArcelorMittal look round the area in order to keep balance and help here.” Raj Mandamparambil, Group Head of the ArcelorMittal Foundation, was amongst the group that took part in the handover. He says it is commendable that international volunteers took time out of their annual leave to come to a foreign country to serve in communities so different from their normal surroundings. The total investment by ArcelorMittal South Africa in this project was around R400 000, which includes the costs for refurbishment as well as the expense of hosting the international visitors, said Masike. The newly refurbished classrooms have been equipped with all the amenities needed to create a happy and conducive learning environment for the 160 Foundation phase learners. It was reported by the principal that educators at the school have said the newly renovated classrooms will improve the quality of education and the learning experience of learners. “We express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated local and international ArcelorMittal team members and the local community for agreeing to contribute towards refurbishment toward state-of-the-art classrooms and for building the jungle gym,” said Mokhothu. “Poor education and lack of adequate infrastructure in disadvantaged communities is one of our country’s greatest challenges. This project demonstrates that with a collaborative effort from private sector companies like ArcelorMittal and government, we can together play a vital role in curbing these challenges,” he said. The ArcelorMittal Solidarity Holiday Programme was initiated in 2010 and this year marks the fifth anniversary of the initiative. Through Solidarity Holidays, employees are given the opportunity to engage with people from different cultures, to interact closely with colleagues from other locations and make a direct contribution to the company’s social development initiative.

TOUCHLINE has faith in the newly elected Emfuleni Local Football Association to take our football forward. However, TOUCHLINE’s main concern persists - the structure of the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Super and Junior League. This doesn’t make sense to TOUCHLINE, to say the least. For example, the Super League Tournament played in a round robin format while the u/13, u/15 and u/17 were a knockout stage. It is a big mistake for the u/13 tournament to start with a knockout while Super League starts as a round robin. This is not how things should be done, especially when we talk about development. To make matters worse, Emfuleni Local Football Association chairman Mondli Nkosi says it is only in Boitshepiville that the junior

Comrade mentality does not belong in football

tournament plays in a knockout stage, while other areas or streams play in a round robin system. According to Nkosi, Boitshepiville teams agreed to play knockout stage during a meeting held at George Thabe Stadium prior to the tournament. If this is the case, those teams’ representative are out of line to suggest that the junior soccer tournament be played in the knockout stage. These youngsters must enjoy themselves as much as happened with the Super League teams. The junior soccer teams must be our top priority in this region and if the coaches decided the juniors play knockout stage, then they are not part of development. The truth is that this is not a Sunday league but the development of football where these youngsters should be shaped at a young age.

For starters, development is not about winning but about laying a solid foundation for the future. TOUCHLINE also wishes to advise the newly elected Emfuleni Local Football Association to improve communication with their partners such as Emfuleni Local Municipality in terms of facilities. The Emfuleni junior league tournament had to play at James Ground because the George Thabe Stadium was not booked or because the municipality was not aware of such games. Look, as much as those facilities belong to community, the right channels must be followed. It was very disappointing for these youngsters to be told they would play on hard-surface soccer grounds while there are much better facilities in their areas. Lack of communi-

cation is the only downfall of our football in this region. It is wrong for the development teams to insult stadiums’ carekakers and demand they open the stadium when the right process was not followed. It is ‘comrade mentality’ to claim the stadium belongs to the community. It is not supposed to work like that because - as things stand now – we don’t have proper facilities in townships due to the same mentality of entitlement, Grow up somebody – things have changed for the better of football. It is our responsibility that everyone takes care of those facilities - precisely because they belong to the community. We don’t need `comrades’ in football. We need coaches and administrators. Let’s do this again next week. From TOUCHLINE …!!!

Big names to grace Aaron Mokoena tournament final Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - The Aaron Mokoena Youth Tournament has reached a climax with four teams to battle it out in the semi-finals and final at Boipatong Stadium at on April 18. The tournament is organised by the Aaron Mokoena Foundation in partnership with Sedibeng Municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality and Emfuleni Local Football Association. Since the tournament started it has attracted a lot of interest from PSL scouts with Platinum Stars chairman and Sedibeng-based Senzo Mazingisa gracing the tournament. Mpumalanga Black Aces star players Tshidiso Tukane and Abia Nale were among the local soccer professionals who came and supported the initiative. The two were overwhelmed by the talent on display that day.

Young Gifted and Bold School Tournament

BOIPATONG. - Eight local schools will participate in the Youth Gifted and Bold School Tournament scheduled to take place at Boipatong Stadium on April 16 - 24. The sporting codes to take place are netball and soccer. The main aim of the tournament is to give young people a platform from which to showcase their talent and help ease some of the social issues faced by the youth sector. The eight schools to take part are Jet Nteo Secondary, Thuto-Lore, Lebohang, El-Shaddai, Mahareng, Mohlodi, Tsolo and Sun-Crest Secondary. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Skumbuzo “Taka” Nkonyane, chairman of the organising committee, says this initiative is one of its kind in Sedibeng. He says this is part of Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula’s call to school sports. Nkonyane says these two sporting codes - netball and soccer - are some of the activities that were popular at schools in the past. Netball and soccer used to attract attention with the Sedibeng community coming in droves to support school sports. He says the initiative is part of bringing back those good old days when netball and soccer provided ‘killer entertainment’. What made things even more interesting was that most past soccer professional players were discovered playing school football. There were powerhouse schools such as BoteboTsebo, Maqeke, Lekoa-Shandu, Moqhaka and ThutoTiro Secondary, to mention but a few. When it was Wednesday the whole Vaal Triangle community would flock to the neighbouring soccer grounds to watch the above-mentioned schools: “We want to bring school sports back to where they belong like it used to be the past. The local soccer fields used to be packed to capacity with the community coming to watch netball or soccer. This is no longer the case and we appeal to school principals to support the initiative. “The only time our school sports get attention is during the athletics season and this is wrong. “Football and netball must be given the respect they deserve, especially at the so-called Model C schools,”
