School children in accident one dead Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - The community of Zone 3 stood their ground on Tuesday morning and vowed to cause havoc after a horrific accident that claimed a life just metres from the Zone 3, Evaton crossing. The accident occurred on Saturday midday when a Meyerton ‘Quantum’ taxi apparently drove over four schoolchildren leaving one dead and three of them escaping ultimate tragedy. Some members of the community are said to have beaten up the driver who was later saved by Police who drove him away from the scene. The three injured children were rushed to hospital. Speaking to the individual parents, Makanono Sebatane says she still can’t restrain her tears. “My child is doing her Matric and she has to undergo such a very painful catastrophe. “She has to be operated on for a broken leg and she is going to live with this injury for the rest of her life.” Busisiwe Mytu, mother of one of the injured, whose injuries are

to her head and leg says, “She has a head injury. Her head was open and her hip bones were visible at the scene. I don’t have much to say as I’m heart-broken. “These children will be traumatised by the loss of their friend, who died at the scene. They will never forget this day,” says Mytu. Meyerton Taxi Association spokesperson Paseka Motaung says the executive committee has already visited the family. “We are very moved by this tragedy. It has broken our hearts that it happened ‘in our house’.” “We send our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and those who were injured during the accident,” says Motaung. Community members say the curve where the accident happened has been reported for years to authorities and that it has claimed many lives with nothing being done. “We are going to close the road until the municipality comes to understand that we are dying here,” says a bystander. Child buried in wrong grave Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Another serious mistake was apparently made by the burial-registration offices of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. A two-year-old girl was buried in an adult site in the Vanderbijlpark Cemetery. A funeral service for the late Refentse Melisa Makume was conducted by a Peacehaven funeral director (Usizwe Lwe Sizwe Burial Society) from her home in Zone 13, on March 7. It has been alleged that the undertaker did not comply or have a proper certificate to bury according to municipal by-laws. Rumour is that the municipality is also on the wrong side of the law. The father of deceased Motheo Makume said they would only find closure once the matter between ELM and the undertaker has been resolved. No way can this be simply dismissed, says Makume: “Who pays for the cost of the body’s exhumation is in the hands of the two parties,” he said. The

estimated amount for the exhumation is R11 000. The family was immediately suspicious when the undertaker drove to the site allocated for adult burials. “Ít is not our duty to find out whether the undertaker has no proper documents for burial. We paid for a peaceful service,” says the father. Stanley Gaba, acting manager: Emfuleni Communication, confirmed that the undertaker was uncertified|: “All uncertified undertakers have been warned that they face arrest should they be caught conducting funerals at any municipal graveyards.” Gaba adds that an investigation will be conducted. The Peacehaven director Mr K Sekabate said he complied with the requirements of registration as Phadi Nkaoli Sekabate (PNS): “I have done nothing wrong in this burial. The municipality must get their house in order before they say certain undertakers do not comply.”

Parents of late Melisa wait to hear from the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) and Peacehaven Undertakers as to when their daughter will be reburied at a proper site in the Vanderbijlpark Cemeterey. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.

The incident happened when the driver was responding to an emergency call. A shack was burning in a Barrage squatter camp on March 15 when the truck driver was unable to reach his destination due to the accident. Another truck assigned as a back-up from Vanderbijlpark arrived late at the scene resulting in a death. Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Mkwani said the deceased, Fredrik Mananyankona Shikwambane, aged between 40 and 45, was alone in his shack. He arrived with his friends from Bophelong in the early hours of the morning. It is not known how the shack caught fire, said Police: “There’s a high suspicion that he might have forgotten to put out the candle. “Some of his friends said they were alerted by a huge flame from the direction of his shack. “When they rushed to help, they couldn’t make it as they were driven back by the flames. “There were no taps nearby to control the fire. “The deceased could not escape due to smoke-inhalation,” said Police. By the time Fire and Rescue arrived the community had already successfully brought the fire under control.

SEBOKENG. - Positive information tipped by members of the public resulted in a suspect and his dagga falling into the hands of the police. The dagga has a street value estimated at R80 000. Warrant Officer Mzimkhulu Mthimkulu said Police were patrolling the area of the Sebokeng Hostel when they received a tip from the public about a man selling dagga. They followed the

lead to the suspect, who is the owner of a house. He was arrested in hostel 4 block H room 23 on March 11 at about 09:30. Police searched him, found four finger-packets of dagga and proceeded to search his domicile, too. They found a big plastic bag of dagga hidden under his bed. He was arrested and charged with possession of dagga. He will soon appear at the Sebokeng Magistrates Court.

Community info led to arrest of three suspects

Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING. – On Wednesday at about 09:45 Police received complaints about three suspects who were busy stealing from a motor vehicle parked at the corner of Leslie Street and Rhodes Avenue. Police members responded immediately and on arrival three suspects were running in different directions. Police pursued the suspects who were later arrested. Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda: “The suspects were found in possession of the following: a Makirt hammer drill, a 20m extension cord, a set of Head Saws, all to the value of R5000.00. One suspect was found in possession of dagga that weighed 0,0005 grams. The owner of the property was able to identify the property

as his. Suspects were detained at the Vereeniging Police Station and Police are investigating a case of possession of suspectedly stolen property, possession of dagga and theft out of a motor vehicle.” All three suspects will soon appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court on charges of stolen property and possession of dagga, adds Funda. Elsewhere on the same day Police received information of a suspect in possession of drugs. On arrival at the given address they found a Nigerian suspect. They searched him and found drugs that were identified as heroin and ‘cat’ in his possession with a street value of R25 000.00. The suspect was detained and will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court. “We’d like to thank the community for the information given in order to fight crime in the area,” concludes Funda.

Joint measures prevail for Police concealment – and these drugs were particularly well hidden – law-enforcement authorities have access to the intelligence, tools and expertise to find and seize them. Syndicates of organised crime should know that we are prepared, willing and able to combine our skills, resources and efforts to target them,” concludes Ntlemeza.

SEDIBENG. - The seizing of Mandrax tablets worth more than R5-milliom resulted from a joint Police operation. The joint operation was between the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Cape Town and Crime Intelligence. Five suspects were arrested in the process. It was on Monday when members of the DPCI and Crime Intelligence acted on information gathered about Mandrax tablets being transported from the south of Gauteng to the Western Cape. The assistance of the Paarl K9 Unit and the Forensics Department was enlisted in the extensive examination during the search and seizure of four suspected vehicles. At about 23:20, the vehicles were stopped at the Huguenot Toll Gate and the Hawks seized large quantities of drugs, which included 117 000 Mandrax tablets valued at R5,2 million, 10 000 Ecstasy tablets worth an estimated R500 000,00 and an undisclosed amount of cash. The exhibits were found hidden in the vehicles’ compartments. It was found that the fourth vehicle was not involved and was released. Three people, who have extensive criminal records, have been taken into custody. The three suspects, aged between 20 and 40, faced charges of possession and dealing in drugs when they appeared in Court on Wednesday. The Acting Head of the DPCI, Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, said this operation again demonstrated the power of joint law-enforcement efforts. Ntlemeza: “Criminal networks seeking to bring illicit drugs into our cities will continue to find it harder and harder to operate when they are up against the combined efforts of multiple law enforcement. We are well aware that international criminals see Australia as a lucrative market for their drugs, but we will continue to work closely with our partners to identify syndicates such as these and ensure their shipments never make it to the streets of Australia. “It doesn’t matter how sophisticated the

Change must be embraced by all

Moleboheng Chaha

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A heated debate was sparked when the 2015 Human Rights Memorial Lecture was delivered by Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Mayor Simon Mahole Mofokeng at the Vaal Campus of the North West University, NWUon Monday. Mofokeng said, “When I was asked to come and give this Memorial Lecture I reflected on three things. Firstly, I remembered the deaths of 69 protesters and the serious maiming of 180 others by apartheid security forces on March 21 of 1960. This became a turning point in the struggle for freedom and human dignity. “The unarmed protestors were protesting against the hated ‘dompases’ – which racially barred the majority of South Africans

from enjoying their full rights to citizenship.” Mofokeng sparked statements that the racial struggles were not matters of yesterday, but still struggles that learners - especially in Higher Learning Institutions - deal with even today. While VUT deputy vice chancellor Professor Gordon Zide agreed with the statements made, the words he chose were that ‘change must be embraced by all’. Zide says, “In order for transformation to happen, it needs to be embraced by all. Our institutions need change-makers who are the people who can really form part of the driving force behind mainstream transformation.” On matters of education, Mofokeng says, “There are still inequalities. According to research 35 percent of first-

years drop out after their first year in higher education. There are many factors that cause this dropout such as financial aid and so on.” Mofokeng told students that the municipality was doing everything in its power to help with financial aid to needy students: “As a municipality, we are doing everything in our power to help students. You as students need to study in faculties that can help develop the Sedibeng region.” concluded Mofokeng, adding that this region’s niche had been identified as a water city (hydropolis) and that the mentality of people has to be geared towards ideas of what can be done with water in order to grow the economy in Sedibeng. The event was attended by dignitaries of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), NWU, local municipalities, the Department of Education and students at large.

SDM Mayor Simon Mofokeng sparked a huge debate when he gave the 2015 Human Rights Memorial Lecture.

R1.5 billion to fund development in the province Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - Finance MEC Barbara Creecy delivered her budget speech recently, allocating a total of R1.5 billion to fund development in the southern part of the province. This includes Walkerville, R82 phase 2 and Vereeniging. The Southern Development Corridor is anchored around Sedibeng, the automotive sector and the knowledge-based economy. Just over R1.5 billion has been set aside for the southern corridor to provide houses, services, new schools, rehabilita-

tion and the upgrade of roads, in particular the R82 Phase 2 between Walkerville and Vereeniging, and the maintenance and rehabilitation of health facilities. The Department of Human Settlements has set aside R892 million while R689.9 million will go towards the provision of houses and installation of services in Boikhutsong, the Golden Highway, Evaton, Vereeniging, Ratanda and Savanah City. The Department of Agriculture will establish an Agri-Park linked to township revitalisation near Sebokeng Zone 10 Industrial Area. Over the next three years, both provincial

and local spheres of government combined will spend just over R100 billion on physical assets and capital transfers in the City Region. The province itself has allocated R38.2 billion for the delivery of infrastructure over the 2015 Medium Term. “We must all remain concerned to increase the pace of infrastructure spending. I am happy, therefore, to announce today a new focus on infrastructure capacity,” she says. The Gauteng Provincial Treasury has just concluded the recruitment of engineers and quantity surveyors who will be working with departments on the infrastructure programme. “Also we are happy to announce that

the Department of Infrastructure Development’s structure has been approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA). “We are confident that these two initiatives will help ensure we clear all bottlenecks related to infrastructure delivery in this province. We do this because infrastructure investment is a priority for this government as a determinant of economic development and growth. It allows us to expand the provision of basic services, contributes towards economic growth and strongly supports job creation,” concluded Creecy.

EVATON. - ‘More talk than action’ and ‘more talk than service to the people.’ These were two of the accusations with which the ruling party was lambasted. The lambaster was Democratic Alliance (DA) Vaal Region chairperson of Training and Develop-

ment, Councillor Simon Nkosi. “With so much history behind it and being the oldest township - established in 1904 - it pains me that Evaton residents still use pit toilets,” said Nkosi. He adds, “The Evaton Renewal Project was established by Government to renew and regenerate Evaton, to improve the quality of life of residents but, after 10 years and R48 million spent to fund this pro-

ject, the quality of life is still a dream for residents of Evaton.” Residents still use pit toilets to help themselves when nature calls. Unimproved pit latrines are dangerous for kids to use and cause health hazards for users. Socially it is hugely damaging to residents of Evaton.” Nkosi adds that in 2008, in her budget speech as MEC of Housing, Nomvula Mokonyane said on the Evaton Renewal Pro-

ject’s ‘Turn Around’ Strategy: “In Evaton, we have re-engineered the project so that it begins to address the fundamental issues of the people of Evaton. We have reviewed our strategies and priorities such that the process of change can be accelerated and the outputs thereof become visible,” said Nkosi quoting Mokonyane. After Standard Bank South Africa and private companies funding the Evaton Renewal Project with more than R500 million the acceleration and outputs are not yet visible to residents of Evaton. Furthermore Nkosi said that, in the 2012 State of the Province address, Mokonyane said: “We are currently working with the Sedibeng district and Emfuleni municipality to upgrade the bulk sewer line within the Evaton Renewal Project precinct that will then allow the municipality to install proper flushing toilets.” Nkosi adds that, to date, Evaton residents dream of it happening sooner rather than later. The sooner Emfuleni municipality deals with this problem the better. Failing to do so puts residents of Evaton in danger every day. Zanele Njose of Evaton, a 22-year- old young woman, says, “we live on such failed promises and these were promises given to my parents and known to us.”

I have lately come to realise that some people do not value their worth; in fact they do not even know or care what they are worth. You can be the most beautiful person in the world and everybody sees light and rainbows when they look at you, but if you yourself don’t know it, all of that doesn’t even matter. Every second you spend on doubting your worth, eve-

Know your worth ry moment spend criticising yourself, is a second of your life wasted; it’s a moment of your life thrown away. It’s not like you have forever, so why waste any of your seconds, why throw even one of your precious moments away? You’re going to meet many people with domineering personalities: the loud, the obnoxious, those that noisily stake their claims in your territory and everywhere else they set foot. Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal

with the things they do, because hate in your heart will consume you too. People have to forgive. We don’t have to like them, we don’t have to be friends with them, we don’t have to send them hearts in text messages - but we have to forgive them, to overlook, forget. If you live long enough, you’ll make mistakes. But if you learn from them, you’ll be a better person. It’s how you handle adversity, not how it affects you. The main thing is never quit, never quit, never quit. There are many people who will want to be-

friend you. If you fit the description of what they think is weak, predators want to have friends that they can dominate because that makes them feel strong and important. The truth is that predators have no strength and no courage. It is you who are strong, and it is you who has guts. “If your number one goal is to make sure that everyone likes and approves of you, then you risk sacrificing your uniqueness, and, therefore, your excellence.” ~Unknown Lerato…

March 21 also becomes unveiling for Zone 7 Massacre Mduduzi Mathebula

SEOKENG. - March 21 turned out to be the unveiling date for the Zone 7 Massacre plaque. This was the commemoration of when 38 members of the Zone 7 community were brutally killed during a night vigil on January 5 of 1991. Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) officials and Gauteng provincial delegates

were deployed to unveil the stone since the recent destruction of the first. The first plaque was unveiled by the ANC Youth League and Women’s League. The stone of remembrance has grown into a community treasure over the years. SDM mayor Simon Mofokeng during his speech condemned the community for destroying its history.

Mofokeng was alongside MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza and MEC Panyaza Lesufi. In his talk he told the masses that attended the unveiling that they need to protect their own history. “The stone is just a symbol that will be part of history; we are going to build a proper monument on an allocated place,” said Mofokeng. Sedibeng Ster spoke to Mandla Nangalembe, brother to Christopher Nangalembe, whose night vigil those who were slain were attending that night: “As a family we feel sad that the first stone

was destroyed but we are glad that a new one is being unveiled today in remembrance of those who died. The stone does not belong to Chris but to all who laid down their lives for our freedom.” He further says both municipalities (Sedibeng District Municipality and Emfuleni Local Municipality) are playing a vital role to protect the memory of the community of Zone 7. From the unveiling the contingent proceeded to Sharpeville for the formal Human Rights Day proceedings.

Lakeside library officially opened Moleboheng Chaha

LAKESIDE. - Midvaal Local Municipal Mayor Bongani Baloyi recently opened a state-ofthe-art Library for the community of Lakeside and surrounding areas. The Lakeside Library’s opening came just in time for South African Library Week (SALW), which was observed from March 14 - 21 Baloyi said,“Libraries have always been about building communities in Midvaal, and today’s opening will pay tribute to that. Our libraries in Meyerton, Sicelo and now Lakeside, are linked to our community halls, so that they can serve as the centre of communities, bringing people together, providing knowledge, and opening up new opportunities, and this is part of the concept of providing a onestop service centre for communities.” Baloyi continued that it was the responsibility of the community to ensure that the building was maintained in its current state: “I urge the Lakeside community to take ownership and ensure the facility is used responsibly and safely – guard it against vandalism and theft. “The facility belongs to you, your children and grandchildren. Do not let anyone take this gift, and the opportunities it offers, away from you.” Baloyi concluded. Deputy Director: Library Services Wendy Sibeko said, “Midvaal Local Municipality is known for the finer things. You are the smallest municipality, but you continue to beat the bigger municipalities. “Libraries assemble the totality of human knowledge, it is a miracle to read a book. Libraries are centres of knowledge.” Sibeko also urged the community to stop burning libraries: “The burning down of libraries must come to an end. The community must stop taking out their frustration by burning down libraries.” The programme of the day ended with a tour of the library.

“We will soon be donating over 150 soccer balls for participation in sport to fight against crime and abuse.” The Grade 2 learners, Ditshewane Nnete (6) and Itumeleng Sediadiane (7), said they will make sure they look after the shoes: “The (political) party comes at a time when our shoes have started to fall apart.” Educator Kabelo Pule said the DA had really helped|: “We will encourage learners to look after their shoes.”

‘Evaton Cling’ Defiance can turn launches new library into violence Moleboheng Chaha

Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING. - A new single from musician Excellent Sekoto dubbed “Nyaope” is aimed at creating awareness. Sekoto states that the song Nyaope speaks about how the drug is tormenting the lives of young South Africans, especially those who come from impoverished townships. “If enough awareness is not created worse is coming. Because if you allow defiance today, it becomes violence tomorrow.” Sekoto says that it is not only about addiction but the dangers imposed on the community by this drug. “Nyaope addicts pose a real danger to the community. This drug is destroying the futures of South African youth and ruining the lives of their parents. This is not only a problem for the Department of Justice but for all of us. Therefore we must all do something. Different departments and organisations must come together and fight this epidemic.” Sekoto’s message is “Addiction is a treatable disease - so Nyaope addicts can be successfully rehabilitated.”

EVATON. - Unemployed young people have embarked on an educational system to help kids with their homework and young development activities. The initiative is by the ‘Evaton West Cling’ - itself the initiative of Witwatersrand Dropouts and CEPD. Recently a library was launched for the Evaton West community. This library will be the first of its kind that consists of teachers, learners and young development officials. Project manager Tholakele Mbewe says coming up with such a brilliant project was not easy. But the goal was one to create an educative environment for the kids. “Evaton as whole has only one library, which makes it difficult for children to access information.

Musician Excellent Sekoto creates awa reness around drug abuse through his new single ‘Nyaope’.

Life has changed today. Children need to be informed with much information in order to face the future,” said Mbewe during the launch. In the morning a five-kilometre march, in which school-uniformed learners participated, was conducted by the Evaton Cling. The march was for awareness of education and its importance to society, said Siphiwe Hlalele. Learners were given a chance to read their favourite books to their parents just to show what they do at the Evaton Cling every day. Mbewe says they don’t just give children books to read but they make sure they understand why they need those books and help them with their homework. The launch was a great success, as parents can attest. They would like to see the Evaton Cling grow further into other areas.

VUT hosts International Cultural Day

Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is a formidable tertiary institution. It is growing in leaps and bounds both in stature and size. It has drawn students and staff from all over the world. This was evidenced when Vaal campus hosted, embraced and celebrated an annual Inter Cultural Day on March 14. The theme of the event was

“Connecting cultures, connecting the world”. The main objective was to encourage social cohesion, cultural understanding, tolerance and unity on the campuses. The aim was to appreciate diverse cultural differences. Of 22 000 students about 2 000 came from more than 35 countries. “It is important that we remember and celebrate our strengths and our values,” said Kediemetse Mokotsi, director: Marketing and Public Relations.

She adds that diversity remains one of VUT’s highest priorities, one of the most important ideals. The event has encouraged interaction and harmony among staff and students. The programme contributes to social justice and transformation of the university as well as the strategic positioning of the university as far as internationalisation is concerned,” she said. Amongst dignitaries present were ambas-

sadors from various countries with whom VUT has very close partnerships. Professor Gordon Zide, VUT deputy vice chancellor: Governance and International Transformation, was guest speaker. The function was organised by the VUT through the coordination of the Department of International Relations & Advancement in partnership with Student Support and Services, Corporate Affairs and Social Justice, and Transformation.

Battery Centre & Ster Competition The most important check you can make on your vehicle battery: the warranty Car battery failure isn’t scheduled like load shedding. It can happen when you least expect it. Finding a reliable, quality car battery can be tricky, but if you look out for a long-term guarantee, you’re halfway there. A warranty is essentially the company’s seal of approval on their product. SA’s leading battery manufacturers, First National Battery, offer the only genuine nationwide guarantee – a two-year product warranty on the complete ‘Raylite’ Enhanced Flooded

Battery (EFB) range. The warranty is valid at any one of First National Battery’s franchise outlets - Battery Centre - nationwide, regardless of whether it was bought at that branch or from a different stockist altogether. “If it’s a manufacturing fault, and is in the warranty period, it will be replaced – no hassle,” says Marketing Director of Battery Centre, Andrew Webb. “Moreover, our Battery Centres are equipped to establish the most likely cause of the

battery failure by performing a free-of-charge battery assessment. In some cases, the battery itself isn’t faulty and our battery specialists are able to advise on how to eliminate the problem – saving you the unnecessary cost of replacing a battery that doesn’t need replacing,” he adds. Choose high-quality, reap the benefits. When it comes to replacing a battery, think long term. A cheap battery might save you a few rands now, but could end up costing you a lot more in the long run. All Battery

Centres nationwide stock the technologically advanced Raylite EFB range. Designed as a cost-effective solution for cars using start/stop technology, these batteries offer exceptional performance and are an excellent choice for all vehicle makes and models. “These batteries are also fully recyclable and under normal operating conditions will not require any maintenance,” concludes Webb. To get your current battery tested for free by the battery specialists at your nearest Battery Centre, visit the online branch locator here. To stand a chance to win a Raylite battery with free installation from your nearest Battery Centre, SMS the word “Battery” followed by your name and surname and your type of vehicle to 45516. For more information about Battery Centre’s products and services visit www.battery.co.za or call the battery specialists toll free on 0800 112 600.

Big Save Cash & Carry Evaton: Supermarket & Wholesaler

Address: 175 Adams Road, Evaton. Big Save started out in 1989 as a family business, owned by the Jardim Family, trading as Waltloo Wholesalers. In 1995, it changed its name to Big Save. Big Save Evaton is part of the Big Save Group, which has 5 other Cash & Carry outlets and 5 liquor outlets, all trading under the Big Save brand. George Versfeld and Patrick Oertel partnered with Big Save in a joint venture to open the Evaton Branch. The other Big Save stores are in Waltloo, Pretoria Market, Hammanskraal, Mabopane and Marble Hall. The building in which Big Save Evaton is located, was built 5 years

ago and had been waiting for a suitable operator to commence business. During 2014, Patrick Oertel, who has 33 years experience in retailing and wholesaling in South Africa, and George Versfeld, who has 35 years experience in banking in South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe, concluded a deal with the Big Save Group which led to Big Save Evaton opening its doors on the 12 December, 2014. Big Save Evaton employed 90% of its staff from the Evaton/Sebokeng area, almost all of whom had been previously unemployed. Big Save Evaton offers a comprehensive range of groceries, perish-

able and non-food items and also has its own in-store bakery, butchery and fruit & veg department. Big Save Evaton is referred to as a “hybrid” store in that it caters for the needs of traders and public alike. Until now, traders and organisations wanting to buy in bulk at competitive prices had to travel far distances. Now, it’s on their doorstep. Due to it been part of the Big Save Group and its affiliation with the Independent Cash & Carry (ICC) buying group, Big Save Evaton is able to compete in terms of price with the larger, more established participants in the FMCG industry.

Being owner-managed, Big Save Evaton is passionate about fulfilling customer needs and providing excellent customer service. Our staff is always reminded that nobody works for Big Save Evaton. We all work for our customers, who are our ultimate employers and who pay our wages. Without good service, we will not keep our customers. Without our customers, we will not keep our jobs. Big Save Evaton invites all to visit our store and see what we have to offer.

VRCCI opens doors into a trust for small business Mduduzi Mathebula

VEREENIGING. - The Vaal River Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VRCCI) is proud to announce the launch of a small business funding trust. The announcement was the highlight of an event on Thursday at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre. The summit was attended by many business people from the Vaal area, but the VRCCI said more people from outside Vaal than Vaal people attended the summit. Easter Mogashane - CEO of VRCCI which is a member of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), says the funding trust is aimed at helping and supporting small businesses to grow and remain sustainable while at the same time encouraging local communities to actively participate in Local Economic Development (LED). “To address issues of poverty, job creation and economic growth, a serious turnaround strategy Sibusiso Mkhwanazi – CEO of Avatar Agen cy speaks on his journey through the world of business.

is needed,” said Mogashane during his talk. The ceremony was conducted by renowned TV personality and professional teacher Dosto Noge. Amongst those who were part of the panel were Albert Wadi – Opening – Chamber Manager at South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sibusiso Mkhwanazi – CEO of Avatar Agency, Mthokozisi Benghu – Standard Bank Trust and Philip Sapto – VRCCI EXCO – Education and Workforce. “Because many small businesses are unable to secure funding using conventional methods, they lack the necessary resources to grow and stay in business. Without the growth of small businesses our country’s economy and the local communities will remain heavily burdened,” said guest speaker Mkhwanazi. Mogashane said after the launch that VRCCI, together with its partners, would embark on a series of roadshows and workshops

around the country to make sure that as many small businesses as possible are reached. The fund will not only focus on financing small businesses, it will also ensure that

small businesses prepare adequately for success. Small businesses will have the opportunity to be thoroughly mentored and coached by business experts.

Keeping art in Sedibeng alive Moleboheng Chaha

EVATON. - Masihabulisane consortium for Emfuleni Artists recently held a Human rights dance festival at Mafatsane hall in conjunction with Emfuleni Local Municipality. Masihabulisane was formed to unite artists in order to give them a platform to share ideas, information and solutions to challenges. The event brought a diversity of dancers from across the Vaal into one venue to showcase their unique performances. One of the performers, Themba

Mwahla whose group Nomthandazo, performed a piece named ‘Right of Passage’ states that the performance depicts a story about the oppression of women. “We live in a country where women are still not afforded the same equality as men. This piece is about how men use women to get what they want and then just dump them and immediately move to the next.” Although the event was successful, artists were worried that although the event was held in partnership with ELM, there were no representatives from the arts and culture department.

Friends bid farewell to a friend. Police Warrant Officer John Nkosi (front middle with white shirt) is surrounded by friends as he hung up his handcuffs. Two functions were held at the Spur Restaurant and outside the Magistrates building. Photo: Lazar us Dithagiso.

Two farewells for retiree Lazarus Dithagiso

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Warrant Officer Kabonena John Nkosi said he would never forget when he joined the police force. At that time, there were no senior black police commanders. All white police officers from the rank of constable had control over black officers. That was the government of the time, he said with a smile. Two farewell functions were held for him at two different ven ues in Spur Restaurant and outside the Magistrates Court. Asked about the recent spate of crime, he conceded that it has increased dramatically: “Criminals seems to have more rights. Law enforcement is very strict on all citizens but there’s little control over crimi-

nals. It’s good for people to have the rights but they should not abuse them.” Nkosi retired at 56 as a Court Orderly at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court. He joined the Lekoa municipal police in 1985 before he went to Hammeskraal Police Force College. When the Police Service took over, in 1990, he worked at Boipatong. A father of four, married to Liza Nkosi, he says he served with the Visible Policing and Crime Prevention Unit. He has not considered going into any business for himself: “I want to nurse my body, I am very tired,’ he said. “Thanks to all my seniors, juniors, prosecutors and magistrates for giving me an opportunity to deliver what I could.”

Each piece tells a different story Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - 29-year-old educator Mondli Kunene’s dreams are not limited to the faculty of education. Kunene also describes himself as a self-taught visual artist. Kunene says, “I started painting in 8th grade using watercolours as my medium until I met the Late Speelman Mahlangu (Prolific South African Visual Artist) and he introduced me to oil paints due to the potential he saw in me.” “I have exhibited in the ABSA L’Atelier (studio) and at Sasol New Signatures. My work reflects contentious social issues that primarily affect the African diaspora and the world at large. I communicate the abovementioned ideas within my pieces in a man-

ner that is also informative to the viewer,” adds Kunene. He states that each and every piece of his art tells a different story, especially regarding issues that happen in the community. Kunene would like to ask for help in the form of donations from the community: “I was recently selected as a representative of the Vaal to exhibit my art works. My challenge has been getting the pieces framed. “The Industrial Development Corporation is the one that is carrying out the initiative to help develop up-and-coming artists.” Anyone who can help Kunene achieve his dream can contact him on 073 788 7295 or via email on kunenemondli@ymail.com.

Artist Mondli Kunene requests the help of the community in the form of donations so he can take part in the current IDC Art Exhibition that ends in April.

BOPHELONG. - “Through education, God raises somebody to be something in the community, a person who can stand firm even against the strongest wind.” This came from Pastor Ephraim Vilakazi of Faith Connection Bible Church. He said leadership is about leaving a legacy for generations to come: “The aim of inviting graduates to the church is to engage, motivate and encourage children on the importance of education through prayer,” he said. Church in the past played an important role in liberating the nation through sports, skills and academies. Vusimuze Makhubela, youth chairperson at the church, said the youth are encouraged

to learn that they can make it in life regardless of family background. Some graduates are members of the Faith Connection Bible Church. Pastor Thabo Molefe of New Life Centre Ministries from Evaton West was the motivational speaker. He told the congregation that, “our children sometimes fail to see the potential God has invested in them”. Bishop Simon Khatiane of Jubilee Harvest Bible from Bophelong guest-preached to the congregation that “when God places you in a certain place, don’t move around. You’d better stay because God has a purpose for you. Jumping from one church to the other does not serve the purpose God has invested in you to serve Him.”

Government largesse Lazarus Dithagiso

ZAMDELA. - Labour minister Mildred Olifant and Small Business deputy minister Elizabeth Thabethe, were joined by Free State Social Development MEC Sisi Ntombela, the executive mayor of the Fezile Dabi district municipality - Councillor Max Moshodi and Metsimaholo mayor Brutus Mahlaku when they donated a cheque for R100 000 to Tebello Manoto, founder of the Tebello Association for the Blind. The function was hosted at the Multi Purpose Centre, Zamdela, on March 6. Some 1000 families of Metsimaholo Municipality received food parcels with another 150 learners of child-headed families receiving school uniforms. Manoto said they started the association three years ago with 57 members working on the cane project to make baskets. Mapho Mahlasela appreciates the help received from the government. “The money comes at a time we need it most. We have kept on knocking on business people’s doors but at least this will minimise costs. Thank you,

Premier Ace Magashule, President Jacob Zuma and their ministers,” said Manoto. “To be blind is not the end of the world,” said the mother of two children, one born blind. The deputy minister encouraged the communities to stand up and do something for a living. She said the government would help up to a certain point. She said people are welcome to contact her office for social grants and to start their own businesses. “We don’t have a special agent in the government to assist the public.” She also warned people “never to be taken in by self-proclaimed fraudsters on the street who say everything is for free in the government.” Female choristers of Groenpunt Correctional Services engaged the audience with their renditions. A female inmate serving 20 years encouraged women not to fall into the trap of committing crime. She said: “Speak out and never let yourselves to be in the centre of bondage or abuse.”

Some members of the Tebello Blind Association received a R100 000 cheque from Free State Social Development MEC Sisi Ntombela and deputy Small Business minister Elizabeth Thabe the. Also there was executive Fezile Dabi mayor Cllr Max Moshodi, far right. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.

Tutudesks vital for students Lazarus Dithagiso

BOPHELONG. - Seeiso Primary School pupils were over the moon when they received 1200 Tutudesks from Amway South Africa. The Tutudesks are named after Archbishop Desmond Tutu. They are portable, provide a stable work surface for impoverished schools that have little or no permanent facilities. The desks were donated last Monday. Raj Parshotam, general manager of Amway South Africa, explains that the future of the continent depends on the level of education children receive and, without basic facilities like desks, pupils face an uphill battle: “By providing this proven solution, we aim to inspire and give these pupils a head start.” Majorobela Mokhothu, principal of the school, said children will feel empowered by the desks: “Pupils have a sense of pride. I am positive that this adds to the willingness of the pupils to attend classes. This has a direct impact on their de-

velopment.” Salona Mabotje, head of department, and Molefe Motale, deputy principal, said the school is blessed with such wonderful help from the company. The ball is in the pupil’s court to produce better results: “After receiving the desks, we don’t expect any excuse from the children.” Shane Immelman, COO of Desmond Tutu Tutudesk Campaign Centre, said this goal will only be made possible through the ongoing support of strategic Programme Partners, such as the Amway: “Millions of African schoolchildren are severely prejudiced in their educational experience by the lack of access to a classroom desk.” Motale said the children will improve their literacy development and academic performance outcomes. Sadtu awards best schools and educators

Lazarus Dithagiso

BOIPATONG. - The Vanderbijlpark branch of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) honoured educators and the schools that performed very well during the 2014 matric examinations. Ramosukula with 100%, Bophelong Sec-

ondary School and Suncrest High School respectively with a 98,3% pass rate and Jet Nteo High School with 90% were honoured with medals. The function was held at Makapane Primary School on March 12. Sadtu chairperson Jabu Khumalo said they wanted to prove

to the communities that educators are not bad: “When somebody is performing well, they need to be applauded by the communities. “We should not only look at the negative side of some ill-disciplined educators. “Educators are working extra hard. Others attend afternoon classes to assist learners

with the syllabus.” Khumalo adds that they have engaged with all educators to make sure that come the end of the year 2015, they should produce at least a 90% pass rate. This is the target they will have to strive for. Those who exceed that percentage have clinched a bonus.

If you can’t beat them, join them! TOUCHLINE hopes the dust has settled following the weekend’s Emfuleni Local Football Association elections. TOUCHLINE also wishes to take this opportunity to congratu-

lation Mondli Nkosi for being elected chairman of the association for the next four years. Whether he is the right man for the job we will not know until he proves otherwise to his detractors. It is no longer about who won elections but about MOVING FOOTBALL FORWARD as TOUCHLINE always emphasises. What transpired prior and during the election should never be used against some of the football administrators or coaches in this region. This would be the biggest mistake we could ever make in our local football. People should learn to accept defeat and move on with their lives. Those who were in the `opposite camp’

should accept the fact that Nkosi is now the new man to lead our football to the next level. No hard feelings! However, TOUCHLINE must say that it is not about position but the support of everyone who is involved in football in the Sedibeng region. Much needs to be changed in our football, especially when it comes to junior soccer teams. TOUCHLINE believes ignoring them can begin to come to an end with development coaches not only giving their soccer teams attention when it is time for tournaments or competitions in this region. Promotion League is not only a league in the local football association, our junior lea-

MARCH 2015

gue deserves to be given the same attention those Promotion League teams enjoy. The football structure is simple – it is from bottom and upward. The biggest mistake local football administrators can make is to wish that Mondli Nkosi and his committee fail. This would be unprofessional and unsporting, to say the least. The newly elected committee deserves all support from the Sedibeng football fraternity. TOUCHLINE’s message to everyone involved in football is that “football is not a `matter of life and death but more that that’. As they say, “If you can’t beat them – join them”. That’s the football spirit. Let’s do it again next week, same place, same time – TOUCHLINE…!!!

SEDIBENG. - Former Bafana Bafana Captain Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena challenges Sedibeng development coaches to produce junior national players as was the case in the past. This Boipatong-born defender says there is a serious need for coaches to concentrate in the field of play and to leave politics to the politicians. Mokoena says he is very disappointed to see that no player represents Sedibeng in the SA U/17 National Team that qualified for the World Cup. Mokoena still holds the record as the most-capped Bafana Bafana player and made history as the youngest Bafana Bafana player in the 1998 Bakino Faso AFCON. The Aaron Mokoena Youth Tournament is currently under way at various venues in Sedibeng. The tournament is being held in partnership with the Sedibeng District Municipality. Since the tournament started local soccer fans have come in numbers to watch these future Bafana Bafana stars in action. Mokoena says he is overwhelmed by the quality of football displayed by these youngsters. “No doubt, the future looks promising for these youngsters and I’m impressed with the work done by the development coaches in this region. Their talent is there but I will be happy to see some of these boys playing for our junior national teams,” he concluded. The teams participating in the tournament are: Group A Vaal Milano Benfica* Vaal Manchester Italiana Vaal Hunters Group B Athlehang Vaal Dev FC Nale Academy Santis FC Group C Bophelong Milano Bophelong Barcelona Vereeniging Old Boys FC Rising Stars FC Group D Celta Vigo Sebokeng Academy Eya Sebokeng Ajax*

This Sebokeng-based youngster was even more excited taking into consideration that the game was live on SS4. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Moloi said he is happy that he is finally living his dream. To date, Moloi is among the nine players that were spotted by Jomo Cosmos boss – Jomo Sono - from Nale Academy last year. “I’m over the moon to be the first player to score in the opening of the tournament. I was not aware how important the goal was until my coaches told me that I was the first to open an encounter in the tournament. I wish we could go all the way to the final and win this tournament,” saidthe jubilant Moloi. Other players who came from this region that are part of Future Gauteng International Champions are Thabo Motaung, Tshediso ‘Skipa’ Motaung, Siyabonga Siya, Ofentse Mooi and Karabo Sithole.

Promotion League Mini Tournament under way

SEDIBENG. - Emfuleni Local Football Association teams were involved in the Super League Mini Tournament at various venues over the weekend. The tournament is organised by the ELFA as part of its preparation for the new season, which is set to kick off soon. The tournament started last week with the Bophelong, Sebokeng and Evaton Stream in full swing. The Boitshepiville Stream also kicked off their

campaign over the weekend at the Boipatong and Isak Steyl Stadiums. Despite the rain and chilly weather the teams displayed good football, which kept local soccer spectators on the edge of their seats. Meanwhile, the teams were supposed to play two games. However, due to the rain, Boitshepiville Stream coordinator – Lehlohonolo “Zuma” Masharule - suggested the teams play one game each. This was due to the fact that the VUT stadium manager was concerned about the con-

dition of the pitch. Masharule says some of the teams will play their games during the week since schools will be closed. Meanwhile, the teams from the following areas Boipatong, Vanderbijlpark, Sharpeville, Rust-ter-vaal and Roshnee, are invited to attend a meeting scheduled to take place at the George Thabe Stadium this Friday at 17:00. The Sebokeng team’s meeting will take place at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14, Sebokeng, at 9:00.

SEDIBENG. - FC RESA has set the pace at the top of the SAFA Sedibeng SAB League Log standing while hot on their heels is the VUT FC, otherwise known as “The Students”. FC RESA leads the log standings with 34 points out of 17 games, while The Students are second with 33 points with three games in hand. VUT FC has played 14 games and, as things stand, The Students have more advantage than the rest of the teams to walk away with the SAFA Sedibeng SAB League title at the end of the season. The log leaders lead them by one point with three games in hand – this is enough motivation for The Students’ coach - Geelbooi “Goma” Masango. The only challenge with VUT FC is consistency; its players are known to drop points at the crucial stage of the season as was the case over the weekend when they played to a 2 - 2 draw against defending champions Vaal Milano FC in an exciting encounter played at the Shakespeare Stadium on Saturday. On the other hand, the youthful Vaal Milano FC is third on the log with 30 points out of 16 games. The rest of the weekend results: Vaal Milano FC2-2VUT FC Sailor FC 0-1 Ghetto Seven FC Vantage FC 2-3 Reki FC VOB FC1-3 Real Barcelona Seb. Ajax FC1-3 Mighty Blues Verona FC 1-0 Try Me Again FC Mkhabela FC1-4 FC RESA The Birds FC3-1 Real Hearts FC SAFA Sedibeng SAB League log
