Foreigners arrested in operation ‘Fiela’ Lerato Serero

DE DEUR. - Four undocumented foreigners were recently arrested at Weilersfarms, Kanana Park during the joined operation ‘Fiela’ that was conducted by De Deur SAPS, Johannesburg Metro Police Department and Home Affairs. De Deur SAPS Spokesperson Constable Maketekete says that during the operation twelve foreigners’ tuck-shops were also visited and shopkeepers were requested to produce their passport/asylum papers. It was unfortunate for two Somalians, one Malawian and one Zimbabwean did not produce their passport/asylum documents and they were arrested for contravening the immigration act 13 of 2002 Sec 49(1)(a). “They were all detained at De Deur SAPS and appeared at Vereeniging Court where one of them was found guilty of contravening the immigration act. He was fined R1000 or faces three months imprisonment, suspended for one year,” Maketekete ends.

Car drives into shacks Moleboheng Chaha

BOPHELONG. – Residents could not believe their eyes when they saw a car drive through five homes along the street, crashing straight into two shacks of the Yawa family home. According to bystanders, it is pure luck that nobody was injured during the incident. The incident was triggered by 40-year-old mechanic Simon Labas, who was fixing an old Honda Ballade when it happened. “I stood outside the car and started

it to see if it had been fixed, not realising that the car was in gear.” Labas says there was nothing he could do to stop the car from suddenly speeding off: “I had the scare of my life when I saw the car drive into two shacks where people live. It is very fortunate nobody got hurt.” Labas said his worry now is how he is going to repair the shacks so that the two people staying in them have a place to sleep when they knock off from work. Home-owner Nomode Yawa says, “It is just fortunate that the tenants living in the

VANDERBIJLPARK. - A 55-year-old wanted suspect, the bishop of a church who allegedly defrauded members of the public of thousands of Rands for a funeral policy. He recently handed himself over to the police. The suspect and his company cannot be named as he has yet to plead. He briefly appeared at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court and was released on bail until July 13 pending further investigation.

One victim, Sello Mofokeng, a policyholder, blew the fraud whistle. He told police the whole saga started when the underwriter failed to bury his next of kin. The suspect, operating as a trustee, has never renewed the license, which lapsed in April. He had failed to pay his clients since December last year. Mofokeng said he visited the underwriter only to find the office in Vanderbijpark closed. Mofokeng, through the assistance of the suspects’ employee, managed to trace his whereabouts to his house in Vanderbijlpark. The suspect promised to pay him within 24 hours. The rest of the money, about R250 000, should have been transferred into his account. Days passed and this did not happen. The suspect was arrested after the complainant opened a case of fraud at the police station. Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale reported that the suspect was apparently tipped off as to his looming arrest. Then he handed himself over to the police. Sergeant Makhale urges members of the public who might have also been victims of the suspect to come forward, call Warrant Officer Sticks Motsoeneng on (016) 910 9104 or visit the Vanderbijlpark Police Station.

SEBOKENG. - Zone 11 residents came out, guns blazing on Saturday due to an electricity cut-off. Their nightmare started last Tuesday. These angry residents stood their ground and closed the busy Moshoeshoe Road on Saturday morning, bringing everything to a standstill. They say they have been patiently waiting for Eskom to fix a transformer they have repeatedly reported to be faulty. They claim they have had no electricity for seven days and bathing in cold water is a torrid experience. The residents closed the road with huge stones, making it impossible for motorists to travel through. After some time, Sebokeng Police responded to the scene.

Residents told Sedibeng Ster that they have taken every means necessary to receive assistance. They even know the call centre number by heart. “We can bear load-shedding but not electricity cut-offs,” said the mob. Motsabi Maloka said they have all the reference numbers of their reports to Eskom and there are many. At the Eskom Sebokeng Centre, where

they marched, Eskom representatives assured the masses that they will heed to the community’s outcry and fix the matter. Masipone Makhudu however said, “Even if the matter is resolved, the fact remains that Eskom does not maintain its assets. “We reported oil leaks months ago and they did not respond and now it’s affecting us,” said Makhudu, showing Sedibeng Ster all the reference numbers from Eskom.

‘Help us with the fight against drugs’ Moleboheng Chaha

MIDVAAL. - The community of Midvaal recently handed over a memorandum and a petition with over one thousand signatures to Democratic Alliance (DA) MPL Mike Moriarty. This was done recently at the Meyerton Police Station where representatives from the SAPS, Council and DA were present. The purpose of the handing over is to get assistance from national and provincial government to help the police in Meyerton including the community at large in their fight against drugs. Midvaal Local Municipality Speaker Freddie Peters says, “A lot of work went into this because there are a thousand signatures on the petition. What we want is for the provincial leadership to help the local people including the police with the fight against

drugs.” Peters stated that Midvaal, although not listed as the worst, had problems with drugs just like all the other communities. Midvaal is said to be plagued more and more by drug trafficking and drug related crimes perpetrated by young people seeking jobs. When unsuccessful, they fall prey to drug dealers. These youngsters are said to end up living on the streets and taxi ranks, either begging or burgling cars and businesses. Midvaal Constituency Officer Mariana Kruger says, “This petition is against drugs and drug related crimes in our municipal boundaries. This substance abuse destroys individuals, families, communities and countries. This petition is to be handed over to show our concern about blatant drug dealing in our communities,” concludes Kruger.

Community marches against nyaope Mduduzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE. – “Over 500 learners have absconded from school due to ‘nyaope’ that has infiltrated and killed members of our communities. All because of selfish human beings who enrich themselves at the expense of others.” These were the words of Donald Tontsi from Philisa Anti Substance Abuse in Sharpeville on Monday during a drug campaign. The campaign was peaceful but vocal in elaborating the pain and harm the community is going through to fight the epidemic of drug abuse within the townships. The march started at Sharpeville Hall and went to the police station where their plight was the subject of a memorandum. The memorandum was handed to the MMC for Community Safety, Veli Mcera who acted on behalf of MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, who was long, but fruitlessly awaited.

Before the hand-over to police, Bassy Ramagaga - who was chairing the meeting - gave a few affected community members a chance to voice their grievances on drugs. One victim was Bokang Tsekedi, who lost her brother to nayope. “My brother was electrocuted. He suffered 3-degree burns and later lost his life. He was stealing a live electric cable that shortened his days,” said the traumatised Tsekedi. Addict Bongi Makhethi cried out loud to the community about the substance that is a remorseless killing. “We need help! We are human and we want to live normal lives,” said Makhethi tearfully, speaking on behalf of other addicts who were present. Response to the memorandum was required in two weeks. Mcera sent a clear message to corrupt police officers who are dealers. “Heads will roll,” he said.

Organisations such as Philisa Anti Substance Abuse in Sharpeville together with the community of Midvaal (stories in P4) should be commended for the wonderful work that they are doing in helping curb the surge of substance abuse, nyaope in particular, in our community. Our munici-

Let’s stop this scourge palities should take a strong stand as the community is under siege from nyaope users, both boys and girls who steal anything of value for a fix. Though the exact content of the drug is not known, other substances such as rat poison, milk powder or antiretroviral drugs used for HIV treatment are reportedly added to the mixture to enhance the effect of the drug. Mothers are in despair after their sons and daughters have left them depleted. Even churches are not exempt from these ad-

dicts who can even go as far as stealing its valuable equipment. Until recently nyaope was not classified as an illegal drug, making the prosecution of those arrested for selling or possession of the substance “legally impossible.” But earlier this year the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act was amended to include a ban on substances that contain other prohibited drugs like heroin and dagga, as they are illegal. Big up to that but more needs to be done in finding a solution to this problem

as taking the addicts to jail will only make things worse - as I am made to believe that even in jail this dangerous substance is available. I say as a community we must take a stand and say; enough is enough. I believe that this problem affects all of us. I also believe that even if it does not involve any of your family members directly it affects you in some way. The time is now, enough is enough. Lerato...

EFF on Freedom Charter and ANC on Youth Rally Lazarus Dithagiso

SASOLBURG. - Refengkgotso residents turned up in their numbers to listen to the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters Commander in Chief Julius Malema recently. A day later, communities from as far afield as Orangeville followed Malema and his national executive committee to the national rally, discussing the Freedom Charter at the Multi Purpose officials for employing poor disgruntled people through ‘blankets’ (sex). He said he would refer the issue of electricity to the national parliament: “As the EFF, we will make sure that we push the government to transform the municipalities.” Malema said they will fight in parliament until people’s concerns are recognised. He said in the Free State some residents are struggling to access RDP and that the money is being spent by Ace Magashule and his friends: “When the EFF takes over the government, we will make sure we start with Magashule going to jail. The community is living in bad conditions but the president’s cattle are living in a nice ‘kraal hotel.’” He said Magashule and President Zuma have swimming pools worth over R4 million: “Stop voting for Mandela as he is no more. He told the elderly that they must look to better the future of their children. Not to someone spending money on cattle and swimming pools. The EFF is working for the nation from the locals up to parliament. The community of Themka Khubeka said they struggle to benefit from ambulances and police vehicles due to the bad roads. Shacks are burning as they use paraffin stoves and cattle dung.” Pule Mabe of the ANC national executive committee (NEC), Makale Mohale provincial chairperson of the youth league and Reagan Booysen, Fezile Dabi regional chairperson,

addressed the community at the Refengkgotso sports grounds on June 27. Mabe said there’s no fighting within the ANC. Makale said thousands of youth are unemployed and struggle to access services: “The ANC is aware of this and we are making sure that the lives of the people are changed for the better,” he said. “The African masses must own the banks. Nationalisation is the concept of the ANC.” He said the ANC takes people from ‘pampers, school feeding

schemes, universities through national students financial aid schemes, to Extended Public Works Programmes (EPWPs) up to SASSA. The ANC is fighting the burning of roads, making ‘here-there’ rulings without protests. It should be members of the ANC that complain if SASSA is not giving enough: “In the national assembly, we are not going to allow people to cause disruption,” alluding to the EFF. “The ANC is more than 200 in

parliament and we are aiming to change the lives of people on the ground. We take the responsibility to lead the people seriously.” He said the power of regional government is limited as per mandate of the ANC: “Our mandate as the youth league ends in 2017. In the youth league when you turn 40 you join the organisation. Gatherings are not people’s assemblies. People who build RDP houses are members of the community. Zuma is the people’s president who will lead until 2019.”

Dolphin Boys give hope to orphans Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Lakeside Orphanage in Lakeside Proper was visited by members of BMW Dolphin Boys on Saturday. The group made its intention clear by conducting a precision march that started at Evaton Mall and went to the orphanage. This action attracted many communities as the Dolphin Boys passed the main road to Lakeside. Upon their arrival at the orphanage, the children were waiting in anticipation. They gave them a warm welcome and sang praises to God. The event commenced and many spoke to the children, including, Annah Mofokeng, orphanage manager. The Dolphin Boys brought gifts to the home, including groceries and clothes as a form of giving back to the community. She was very emotional about the visit of the Dolphin Boys. Mofokeng has been running the orphanage for over 20 years and started with two twin sisters who are now

in Grade 11. Maria and Martha Ngwenya, were brought to the orphanage when they were three months old. “It was not an easy road to travel. There were hills I had to climb and rivers I had to cross. I thank God for my husband who supported me all these years. I would like to send my gratitude to the Dolphin Boys for their visit. May God grant you many more years,” says Mofokeng. Dolphin Boys representative Samuel Monkhe asked the house to embark on community upliftment and further told the children to work hard at their school work adding that education has never killed anyone and would bring joy to their lives. Maria Ngwenya, speaking on behalf of the children, burst into tears and asked God to protect Mofokeng’s family for their care and the love shown to the orphanage. “We are not orphans, and I personally don’t even feel like one. We are children of a large family,” says Ngwenya.

A greener and better environment for all Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) and Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) recently held the Botho Ke Bontle (BKB) summit at the Vereeniging Civic Theater under the theme ‘Sustainable living and poverty alleviation.’ The aim of the BKB Cleaning and Greening Campaign is to mobilise communities to prioritise actions that will improve the local environment. ELM and the community in its entirety has been part-taking in the campaign to ensure the road to a better and cleaner environment is a good one. Many of the people who attended the event are in the agricultural and recycling sector, while others were street vendors who were all advised on how to run their respective businesses while also taking care of the environment.

ELM acting Mayor Mabandla Ronyuza applauded community members who had made a career out of recycling waste materials and said that this was a key point to unlocking economic potential as well as bettering the environment. “It is very easy for the community, especially motorists to get irritated by the people who are pushing large bags of waste in the road, but what you don’t know is that those people make a living out of that.” Ronyuza urged the community to also fight against the bad habit of throwing disposable nappies, sanitary towels and other harmful things all over the streets. It was revealed during the summit that although the BKB campaign continues, municipalities will no longer compete with the greening campaign although communities will still continue to improve waste management.

SEBOKENG. - The dire and escalating rate of unemployment - especially among Youth - is recognised. This was said by Telkom Foundation executive public relations officer Sinah Pochana. The Foundation took the opportunity during Youth Month to implement job seeking training for youth. “The aim is to give them the basic skills they need to access jobs,” said Pochana. The primary objective is to contribute to the transformation of disadvantaged communities through sustainable social investment programmes, particularly in the education sector. At the end the learners will be able to write up CVs, set up free e-mail addresses, and access job sites using their cellphones. She exclusively told Sedibeng Ster that not all the learners are bad. They still have to go through certain skills to access jobs in the market. Telkom Foundation has given them memory sticks linked to websites: “They will leave here with full information on how to apply for the job of their choice. We want them to be able to connect

to the international world. They should be able to email their CV as part of a job opportunity. Most opportunities are digital. We don’t have jobs or give jobs, but help them access information.” At least 1500 learners across Sebokeng attended the workshop on job-seeking and training for unemployed youth: “They need to take the opportunity and run with it. The posters were made with the information extended to the radio for every learner in Sebokeng. If there’s a need in other areas we will make time to visits them.” The tales of Ayanda-Allie Paine and motivational speaker John Manganyi provided motivation for the attendees and imparted basic skills. “We live in a digital society and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for job-seekers to access opportunities if they’re not on line,” said Jacqui O’Sullivan, Managing Executive for Group Communication and Public Relations at Telkom. About 200 staff volunteers, assisted Sebokeng youth. “Many young people grow up in communities where many people do not have access to the digital world.”

Touchl i ne

The relegation of Sebokeng Ajax and Vantage FC from Safa Sedibeng SAB League confirmed the “crisis” of Super League in this region. Not long ago TOUCHLINE highlighted the fact that the reason some Super League teams gained promotion to the SAB League and then relegated at the end of the season has something to do with the standard of the Super League. For example, when Vantage got promotion there were complaints that the team was favoured by other teams for promotion to the Safa Sedibeng SAB League last season. However, TOUCHLINE can’t confirm these allegations, except that in the last games of the last season prior to Vantage’s promotion the latter won some games with high scores,

SEDIBENG STER

Can somebody stop this ‘upanddown’? which made people suspect foul play, to say the least. For the last two seasons Sebokeng Ajax has been fighting relegation in the Safa Sedibeng SAB League until finally they got relegated at the end of this current season. Mighty Stars was another team whose stay in SAB League was very short, as they got relegated as well. Vereeniging Old Boys FC survived relegation by the skin of their teeth. This Roshnee-based team was promoted to SAB League last season but ‘huffed and puffed’ throughout the season. This must be a concern to all who are involved in football because the only thing this region seems to be good at is “up-and-down,

up-and-down play.” This yo-yo performance must come to an end because we can’t afford a situation where teams spend one season in SAB League and get relegated at the end of the season. TOUCHLINE said it before – this is because some club owners are desperate for promotion, hence we find ourselves in this kind of ‘up-and-down’ situation every season. The same is going to happen with the current teams that campaign in the Super League next season. Of course, they will be promoted to the SAB League but, at the end of the season, they will be back in the lower league. The same can be said about our junior lea-

Juventus walks away R 8000 richer from kickoff tournament Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Since June is dedicated to the youth, Freda Motloenya, a community builder and a comrade in poverty alleviation, initiated a soccer tournament that is set to become an annual competition for youth and community. The Zone 14 soccer grounds were crowded with fans from Friday to Sunday, where an eight-team soccer tournament was held. Till the last day, these teams had to the fight the adrenaline and zeal of the game and kept soccer-lovers keen to see the last kick of the ball and the last whistle. The eight teams went head-to-head on Friday to prepare for the semi-finals featuring Wafa Mauritius, Juventus, Vosop, Abagerezi, Vaal Beginners, Dougmond, Manyora and Sao Paulo. After three days of soccer Juventus clinched the victory. Their team clinched two major trophies - Best Goalkeeper and Best Coach of the Tournament, while Wafa Mauritius won Best Play of the Tournament. Said Isaac Mphasene coach of the tournament: “It was not an early journey to travel. We had to dig deep and find our style of play. It was a very fruitful tournament. We salute the organisers. “We are very humbled by the turn-out and the way the tournament unfolded. We are pleased to divulge to the community that we feel such games unite our people. Soccer has been part of our lives forever. Through it we can fight many things,” says Motloenya. The tournament was sponsored by Pat Mthembu and Mzwakhe Attorneys. Prize money of R 8000 and a jersey-kit was handed to the victorious team - while the runner-up clinched R2 500.

Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Super League Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - The Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Super League will come to an end in August. Certain teams are tipped to be crowned champions in the three streams. In Stream A, Celta Vigo and Pekwa All Stars FC are hot favourites to walk away with title at the end of the season if their current form is anything to go by. These two rivals are neck-and-neck with 17 points from 7 games and played two draws. They have yet to taste defeat. In Stream B Dortmund FC are pace-setters with 20 points from 9 games. They won six games, drew two with one defeat, while All Stars are leading Stream C with 18 points from 7 games. They won six games and lost only once.

gue. It is not as competitive as one would expect, hence the players that graduated to the SAB League are so poor when it comes to simple football basics. This region doesn’t compete in Safa Tournaments, hence our standard of football remains the same. The talent is there, but poor coaching, administration, coordination and vision let these up-and-coming youngsters down. Some of the people who run our football are not “qualified” to be called administrators or coaches. TOUCHLINE’s message to all the Super League teams is: Ladies and gentlemen, if you want to prolong your stay in the SAB League, compete in the field of play. Don’t win the game in the boardroom, but in the field of play.

Caesar Mofoka tournament hailed a success Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - Caesar Mofoka Sports Tournament hosted its first successful football and netball annual tournament at the Zone 3 Stadium recently. This fun-filled and electrified spectacle saw outstanding and highly skilled football and netball players. Itsebeng Primary School was crowned champion in the football category tournament, while Bula-Tsela Primary was declared runner-up. Kitso Primary School finished third. Ekujuleni Primary School was champion in the netball category while Emanzini finished as runner-up. Bula-Tsela Primary School came third. Xoli Nosenga entertained spectators. Said tournament organiser Caesar Mofoka: “We would like to thank all the sponsors for contributions that made the event successful and also acknowledge the strategic partnership with participating school sports officials: the Emfuleni Football Association and Prof Sebeela from the Emfuleni Sports and Recreation Department for providing the trophies, medals and netball and soccer balls.” The community of Zone 3 and Evaton came in big numbers to support this initiative. The community police forum patrollers from Evaton Police Station, led by Thabo Tladi, also graced the event. Ward councillor Chicco Moshoaliba was also the guest of honour, handing trophies and medals to the winners.

Radebe resurrects sport in Sharpeville Mduduzi Mathebula

SHARPEVILLE. - Nhlanhla King Radebe, Sharpeville-born son decided to show his love for sport by initiating the Makgotamishe Winter Tournament that has been running since 2012. The tournament initially started with soccer only but then Radebe thought of including other sporting codes, such as netball. This year two other sports were included volleyball and basketball. All sporting codes

lived up to expectations. The soccer field was packed to capacity at the Emmanuel Grounds. Soccer fanatics enjoyed each game of the day. Radebe told Ster that the finals will be on Mandela Day, July 18. Ster further supported the advent of ‘hand-sports’ at George Thabe. Eight teams battled it out in the finals and the girls did not disappoint. The field was graced by Dudu Msana, a netball coach, and Shaka Radebe, Emfuleni
