Disabled and Disillusioned

Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG.- “Being a parent is hard work, but raising a child is the most wonderful thing God has entrusted us with.” These are the words of the angry group of parents who allegedly found out that their children had to go without basic needs at the Lebohang Centre (Home for the Disabled) in Zone 10, Sebokeng over the weekend. The saga started on Sunday when a group of parents found that their children were not wearing any diapers and had not had proper meals for some time when they were visiting them. “As I was going home to eat a ‘full colours’ dish, I could not bear the fact that my child was left without nappies and proper food,” says one of the parents. It is alleged that the management is misusing funds and that is why the children don’t have food and basic toiletries. The parents made means to meet with the management of the centre but they were apparently sent from pillar to post as no one was willing to take the blame. These angry parents decided that something drastic had to be done, and this was when they contacted Sedibeng Ster. Speking to Sedibeng Ster Molo Makhola says, “I need answers as to why our children have to go through such humiliation just because they are disabled. They are human beings too. They are not animals,” says the furious father who could not hold back his tears. Sonti Maeyane, also a parent, says: “My child’s grant card is here and I don’t even take a cent from the money. “Why on earth would you think that a sanitary pad is able to serve as a diaper?” The office of Emfuleni Local Municipality MMC of Health Sello Pitso was alerted about the situation and investigations are taking place. It is said that a full report will be available soon. James Makhubo, the centre’s manager says that the problem has been solved.

These parents stand in awe and anger at how their children were apparently being treated at the home. Insert: Sanitary pads instead of diapers are apparently used for disabled children at the Lebohang Home for the Disabled in Zone 10 Extension 1 in Sebokeng. Photos: Mduduzi Mathebula.

One yard and two RDP houses is a waste: United Front

SEBOKENG. - “Time for negotiation is over. There’s no freedom without land”. Most of the community say they still struggle to access RDP houses. One person owns two RDP houses in a yard at the Boipatong and Golden Gardens. The government has lost focus, the community say. Thousands of people are still without houses. “Why should the government build two houses for one family while millions are on a waiting list? “South Africa has become a promised land ever since it gained democracy,” said United Front activist Brick Mokolo.

Mokolo said that residents have not enjoyed the freedom they fought for. Addressing the community, he said: “Blood was not shed for nothing. Today we experience more pain than in the past. “The lives of community members have gone from bad to worse since the dawn of democracy. Today our enemies are our own black leaders, who are even taking a stand to evict us through Red Ants. The matchbox RDP houses built by the same leaders are worse than those built by the old regime,” he added. He said that when they fought the then regime, they did not want to pay for water, electricity, graves and a sewage system. UF united

the struggles in the communities against the cutting of electricity, evictions and retrenchments. “We must reclaim our name - Vaal - and do away with the given name Sedibeng that suits individuals.” Sandra Tsotetsi, a vocal youth, encouraged her peers to unite to shake the sleepy Vaal region: “As the youth, we don’t believe in volunteers. We are still looking forward to the free education promised to us by the ANC government,” she said.

Maximising land and resources for Agritropolis Moleboheng Chaha

MIDVAAL. - Local farmers attended the farmer’s engagement forum hosted by Midvaal Local Municipality at the Meyerton Town Hall recently. “Establishing an agri-tropolis” was

the main theme and Midvaal’s Executive Mayor, Councillor Bongani Baloyi, explained an agri-tropolis as an area within which the main activity would be agriculture. In order to achieve the vision of turning Mid-

vaal into an agri-tropolis, the municipality is focussing on the growth and development of smallholder farmers, who should increase their production and employ more people where possible. Another key theme introduced at the forum is the ‘maximisation of land and resources available.’ Farmers were encouraged to think

differently. Midvaal Local Municipality’s media liason Aaliyah Dangor says, “The municipality plans to assist farmers by providing access to markets, through the development of an agri-processing plant in De Deur. Farmers can then focus on producing the highest quality of produce, with guaranteed markets to purchase their goods.” The need for mentorship was also discussed – commercial farmers need to assist upcoming farmers where possible through organised channels, and the older generation of farmers need to pass on their skills to young people, so that farms can be sustained and developed in the future. The municipality will use the details of the farmers in attendance to build a database, and to establish close ties with the sector, in order to ensure that the vision of the agritroplis is realised in Midvaal.

Madiba is turning in his grave Mandela International Day is celebrated every year worldwide in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on July 18. According to the Mandela Day website it was inspired by a call from the honourable late former president of South Africa. It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to honour his life’s work and an act to change the world for the better. There are however some hypocrites who have turned this wonderful initiative into a money-making scheme and some sort of popularity contest. These are the people that only come out at this time of the year pretending to care about the substance abusers, about the poor who do not have food or blankets, acting as if they care about a school that has been dilapidated for years, or about that child that has been going to school without shoes since her registration and lastly, suddenly developing an interest in knitting! These people should be referred to as frauds because if they ‘cared’ so much, would they not have ‘cared’ 24/7, 365 days a year? Nelson Mandela is turning in his grave, realising that the democracy and the rainbow nation that he fought for is in tatters. The poor are getting even poorer; the number of the unemployed is reaching its millions, the poorest of the poor still lack basic amenities, our parliament has been turned into a circus while the ‘fat cats’ are getting fatter by the day through our taxes. Mandela Day should be a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. It would be an honour if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, love and reconciliation throughout the year, not only for one day or one month. Think about it. “I have learnt that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear” - Nelson Mandela. SEDIBENG. - A case has been registered against the people that have been going around selling land in the area as this is illegal. This they apparently do under the pretence that their organisation has won a land redistribution claim. This information was revealed to Sedibeng Ster by members of Wildebeesfontein Evaton Community Organisation (WECO) who also tell this newspaper that they are the rightful winners of the land distribution court case that has been dragging on for years. They say that an order has been handed out by the high court that the land that they have claimed should be given back to them (WECO), this include land in areas such as Evaton, Sharpeville, Sebokeng to as far as

Heidelberg and Soweto. “We are just awaiting investigations into other claims that have been made on the land that will be completed soon so that a Trust can be opened for our people. Community members must be aware that they are the ones who are victorious in this matter,” says Solom Mthwalo who is the Chief of WECO’s royal committee. Mthwalo says that WECO’s victory is for the people and that they will be holding talks with major companies in the area to see how they are going to compensate the community for the land that they have been operating from ‘illegally’. “This is the land of our people and they are also going to be consulted as to how we are going forward. The land needs to work

for them,” Mthwalo says and adds that WECO is also busy with cases of illegal evictions by unscrupulous ‘sheriffs’ and ‘wild demands’ of payments of rates and taxes from the Emfuleni Local Municipality. Those claiming to be victorious in court and going around selling land have been requested by WECO to come out and show how big a land they had claimed, provide proof of the court order and its supporting affidavits. “No land will be sold. Instead our people will benefit from it,” WECO members say in unison. WECO holds its meeting at the Zone 13 sports grounds at 10:00 every Wednesday and Saturday and community members are requested to attend these.

Congratulations Zwelakhe J Mbele, for this month’s winning story! “Education is not life, but a life with education is worth living for”, my father would always say. It seems a bit funny today because I was merely just a kid that knew little about philosophies like – “The story of your life” or “History in the making”. Evaton. Yes, Evaton. I can still see them. These pictures. Pictures of my parents with hand bags under their armpits from work in the afternoons. Pictures of my brothers in black and white uniforms on their way to school in the mornings and homework in the evenings. “Your day is coming”, my father would say. It must have be a pattern, a routine. The Evaton routine, I thought to myself. The Evaton loud music on Fridays, and crowded soccer fields on Saturdays. Sundays were obvious, church as always. Credit must be given to neighbourhood Role Models. They are people that re-inforced our parents’ teachings in more ways than one. Hearing that someone from across the street has received his/her degree, or had bought a car, has been inspiration on its own. They say “it takes the whole village to raise a child”, and I believe it’s through their words of encouragement and advice that we considered our lives and studies a bit more, even though they were external forces. I have since finished my studies and currently running my own Marketing and Advertising Company. “Education is not life, but a life with education is worth living for”, my father would say. It seems funny today, ‘cause I was merely just a kid that knew little about philosophies like “History in the making” or “The Story of your life” Zwelakhe J Mbele Evaton

PROPHET MADE MY ENEMIES CONFESS WHAT THEY DID TO ME!! I used to suffer a lot in my life and at one point I thought of ending my life. I had tried so many people in the past but no on seemed to help! Until I saw Prophet Shiru on SABC TV helping people. I took down his number and booked an appointment with him. He charged me only R100 to read my fortune and showed me my enemies in a mirror and I was shocked. He made them come and confess everything they had done to me as professed by Prophet Shiru. They caused me to break up with my husband and have lots of bad luck. They had done muthi that made my forehead swell and tokoloshe grow inside it. He then performed ritual to remove it and showed it to me and cured me after that. There’s no other way I can thank Prophet Shiru than telling the whole world about him. He helps with Love, luck, marriage, court cases, business, protection etc.
