Human Chain a triumph Lerato Serero

VANDERBIJLPARK. - The CPSF and sector manager of sector 1, the CW area, recently outdid themselves when they hosted a ‘human chain’ awareness campaign against drugs and prostitution in the area of Becquerel Street in Vanderbijlpark recently. The event was a huge success as as a total of 250 people supported the event and made it a huge success. Vanderbijlpark Police spokesperson Sergeant Getrude Makhale says, “A big thank you to the sponsors of the event. “The list is so long we cannot list all their names. Thank you again. “We would also like to applaud the sector 1 community patrollers, community and sector manager Captain Lizette Robertson, for making sure that the event was a huge success.” Community members pledged to make the area a drug-free zone. They said ‘enough is enough’. After the event itself they started patrolling their area and stopped and searched everyone who was moving around their sector. “We applaud the CW community (Sector 1) for their dedication to make their sector safe and secure. A special “thank you” went to the Oliver Lodge head boy and head girl Katleho Mogokeng and Khutlemano Moreletse for sealing the pledge for us,” Makhale ends.

Dagga worth R600 000 confiscated from minibus Lazarus Dithagiso

MEYERTON. - Vaal Marina Police patrolling the N1 came across a suspect taxi minibus parked alongside the road. This was on April 13 at about 05:40. As they approached, reported Communications officer Constable Brandy Matumise, the driver of the white Toyota Quantum spotted the Police vehicle from afar. He then tried to hide something under the trees. He left the minibus and raced away on foot, leaving behind a 27-year old passenger. Police stopped and searched the passenger as well as the taxi.

They found 17 bags full of dagga weighing 192,6kg and having an estimated street value of R600 000, reported Matumise. The passenger played ignorant. He told Police he had no connection to the driver: “I was hitchhiking from Durban to my home in Katlehong Hostel near Vosloorus.” He explained that apparently the driver was going the same way. The man was arrested and charged with dealing dagga. He appeared in the Meyerton Magistrates Court. The case was postponed for further investigation. The 27-year-old suspect was released on R3000 bail with conditions. Members of the Vaal Marina Visible Police are, from left, Sergeant Thabo Maphuthing, Constable Kenny Mokolopo and Warrant Officer De Oliveira with 17 bags of dagga confiscated from a minibus taxi on the N7 en route to Vosloorus. Three die in car and tree collision Mduduzi Mathebula

SONLANDPARK. - Waterdale Road just near the entrance to Sonlandpark claimed three out of four lives early on Monday. The gruesome accident left the community shocked. The gruesome accident stunned passing motorists because the sheer force of the impact had unearthed a tree by its roots. The fortunate survivor cannot talk as he is fighting for his life in hospital. He was rushed to Sebokeng Hospital before being transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Amongst the three people killed was the carowner, identified as Lehlohonolo Kolisang, a 29-year-old young man from Zone 3. The gruesome accident mystified observers because all that was left of the crash was the back-side of the car. The blue vehicle was found hanging in the trees, with the roots of a tree suspectedly unearthed by the force of the impact. All three victims were immediately declared dead after emergency personnel had examined the scene. According to the deceased’s brother Lucky Kolisang, who was at the scene within hours, he was initially summoned to the Vereeniging Police Station: “I had to move. I knew something bad had happened. At the same time, I tried to be positive about the situation until I reached the police station. It’s unbelievable! We just celebrated Mothers Day. The family cannot take such news. It’s unbearable,” said Lucky. The accident was especially shocking to regular users of that road because, a month before, a crash occurred that killed two people when their vehicle also hit a tree. “This road is a danger to our lives, I have never seen such an impact in my life,” said Granny Phiri. The impact of the accident tore this tree out of the ground and bared its roots. Photos: Mduduzi Mathebula.

Gauteng Premier turns the sod for the new River City Lazarus Dithagiso

Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Wednesday officiated at the sod turning ceremony for the Vaal River City Development. Photo: Lazarus Dithagiso.

SEDIBENG. - Gauteng premier David Makhura was joined by mayors from the Sedibeng District, Municipality Executive Mayor Simon Mofokeng, Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Gretha Hlongwane, Midvaal Local Municipality Mayor Bongani Baloyi, Lesedi Local Municipality Mayor Lerato Maloka and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of River City Development Company Reggie Kukama, during the sod-turning last Wednesday. The event was witnessed by hundreds of members of the public gathered a mere 10 metres away from the Vaal riverbank on Mario Milani Drive. The project should create up to 7 500 jobs in the construction phase alone. The estimated cost of the project is R7-billion to R11-billion. Once established, the Vaal River City will have many benefits, including geographic consolidation of highly urbanised areas of rapid growth, large scale residential +and mobility of people, goods and services. The development of the new Vaal River City (hydropolis) aims to unlock the potential of waterfront development in the Emfuleni and Midvaal areas. The Southern Corridor encompasses the economy of the Sedibeng District and the creation of new industries, economic nodes and cities. Kukama said the unique residential and commercial development will enable the greater public to have access to river frontage and offer the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the parklands and landscaped expanse. He said the centralised civic buildings mean that residents will have ac-

cess to essential services as it becomes part of a centralised Metro and will offer affordable housing on prime river locations. Mofokeng said this was a momentous occasion for the people of Sedibeng as it celebrates an exciting future for the region adding that the South African landscape is changing with development that will leave an environmental legacy for generations to come. He said the integrated spatial development project centralised the Vaal Metro and is the welcome creation of a new metropolitan municipality that will bring development and prosperity to the area. Said Mofokeng, “It will benefit the poor areas and fast-track development and housing delivery.” Premier Makhura said it is the government’s intention to do away with the RDP houses development: “Together with the private sector, we are implementing large scale, sustainable mega-human settlement projects on well located land with socio-economic opportunities.” He said in the people’s view, a post-apartheid city must mirror overall commitment to a society that is truly equal, where there is expanded access to socio-economic opportunities and where there’s dignity and property for all. Many of these projects are catalytic in nature and their impact will be felt across the Gauteng economy and space. The project will be implemented in line with and guided by overall commitment to the transformation, modernisation and industrialisation of Gauteng. Makhura said the projects will create 1000 permanent jobs per annum over three years. The private sector intends to invest more than R4-billion in the development.

Midvaal embraces agriculture Moleboheng Chaha

MEYERTON. - A sense of achievement recently descended on the Meyerton Town Hall. This was when Midvaal Local Municipal Executive Mayor Bongani Baloyi delivered his first State of the Municipality Address (SOMA): Although the journey still continues, it is clear that Midvaal Local Municipality has a lot of achievements to celebrate and this was welcomed by those who attended. Baloyi’s speech touched on fundamental issues such as Education, Economic Transformation and Ser-

vice Delivery in the area. On the issue of economic transformation in the area, Baloyi urged Midvaal residents to be forward thinkers: “The Gauteng premier discussed the need to unlock the agricultural potential of Sedibeng as the food basket of the Gauteng City Region and position the region as an Agropolis, which is exactly what Midvaal has been working on.” Baloyi stated that Agriculture is the main land-use in the municipality, yet the municipality has with concern noted that employment within this sector and overall contributions to

the local economy are very low: “In strengthening our commitment towards agriculture, we are devising an agricultural policy which will see us involved in a range of agricultural projects.” On the issue of housing, Baloyi stated that Council has already approved plans for the upgrading of Sicelo Shiceka Ext 4 & 5, where the plan is to consolidate and re-subdivide the properties into residential, business and community facility stands: “The areas not developable will be allocated as Public Open Space areas. Local councillors

and the community have approved this. The areas as per approved lay-out plan will comprise t 270 RDP stands, Sectional Title units (Two storey walk-ups) 842 total residential stands for qualifying beneficiaries: “The land will be split into a business area, community facility area and public open space. “If everyone pays their municipal accounts in the coming financial year, we would have an additional R49 million to spend on services, and we urge you to all please pay accounts, for the benefit of the community, and yourself.”

Road Accident Fund visits Sedibeng Lerato Serero

SEDIBENG. - In line with the transport minister’s call to reduce the risk of injury and death of unstrapped minors as expressed in

the National Road Traffic Act with effect from May the Road Accident Fund (RAF) will continue its ongoing road safety strategy, focusing on a Child Restraint awareness

campaign and on scholar safety. During the awareness campaign at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre on Saturday from 8:00 to 16:00, RAF will reach out to the communities of Sebokeng and other Vaal mining towns. Through this mobile service, the RAF is able to reach far-flung communities, interacting directly with those affected by the carnage on South Africa’s roads and making a difference in their li-

ves. Five lucky motorists will receive a baby seat, while 20 protective helmets will be donated to learners commuting by bicycle, including 40 pairs of school shoes and bagpacks to deserving schools around Sebokeng as part of RAF’s Corporate Social Responsibility. In pursuit of excellence, the Fund has broadened its footprint across the country with a presence in 96 provincial hospitals and at least one RAF regional office in each of the nine provinces. At Saturday’s event, the RAF and South African Local Government Association (SALGA) will also sign a Memorandum of Understanding giving birth to an alliance that will see road safety education being imparted to communities, RAF’s footprint being established in SALGA’s networks, municipalities becoming key repositories for information, and road users’ rights and responsibilities being promoted. An army is greater than a warrior NewsEdi t or Comment s

T There is no ‘I’ in the word TEAM. This I came to realise recently. In a team we all have our positions, which are in some way all link one to the other. You could compare a team to a chain, once it breaks somewhere, the bicycle cannot function or the dog runs loose.

It is one thing to create a team but quite another to create teamwork, just as it’s one thing to join a team, but another to perform as a team. Teamwork to me means not to work alone, but rather together with others in order to achieve a common goal. I came to realise over the weekend that in a team each and every player is important, that each and every player has their own special qualities and that in a team we should all take responsibility and not become liabilities to one another. There should never be individuals in a team who feel more valuable than others, who feel that if they are not there, the whole mechanism will

fall apart, Never. I might be the Captain but I will never achieve anything if I look down on my squad. This I believe applies in the workplace, in a sports team, in a relationship and lastly in the household. Great teams do not hold back with one another. They are unafraid to air their dirty laundry. They admit their mistakes, their weaknesses, and their concerns without fear . Teamwork is important as according to me it does not mean everybody doing the same thing or everybody being able to do each other’s jobs. It is more a means to a synergistic way of working together where the sum is greater than the parts. Properly

managed teamwork brings out the best in all involved, even those that are perceived to be lazy or insignificant. How often have we seen a team made up of expensive players outperformed by teams with players who may be individually less talented? The next time you think you are good-looking, have achieved more, that you are better, more intelligent or you are a harder worker than others then you are lying because, without them, you would not have been here. “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” ― Michael Jordan Lerato...

Foreigners could go, but SA will remain poor Lazarus Dithagiso

SEDIBENG. - “South Africa was poor even before foreign nationals were among us.” This came from Troy Mathebula, president of the Students Representative Council at the Vaal University of Technology recently. Mathebula was speaking during a mass meeting called by VUT Management. The meeting included staff members, students and all stakeholders against xenophobia. Mathebula said local communities trying to drive foreign nationals out of the country would bring about no change: “In the 1980s and 90s our parents did not have decent jobs, education and housing so it was the same story even when the foreigners were not here. “We know that we do not have land because the ANC is not willing to return it. We live in congested areas because there’s no land. “Killing them or driving them (foreigners) away will not put food on the table

or give you a job. Killing them is not going to make our children stop alcohol abuse. Our children do this to avoid the reality that they nothing better to do with their lives.” He adds that killing Pakistanis or Zimbabweans would not give skills, jobs, or create own industries or make sanitation better: “It will make us cold-blooded murderers. It means we are not the children of those people who went into exile to fight for the liberation of the country. “Those who blame foreign national are not telling the truth. The reason for our misery is the failure of the government, which cares more for the rich. We elect people who do not care about us. Our leaders are not afraid to send Police to kill us. If we are cowards, we will always shift blame to other people. Once we have chased the foreigners away, we will blame ourselves - we’ll blame different ethnic groups, like in the 90’s. “When we finish, husbands will turn against their wives for being useless. The blame has to be put straight on

the government.” He said even before 1980 there was still no proper life: “These foreigners are here for a better life. It is the government that destroys everything. It is the government that we should be marching to, to demand the better life they promise. We should march to the union buildings and occupy them until Jacob Zuma passes a law that will return land to the people. “We should be marching to the big mining companies to occupy their offices until they release money to build the houses they have destroyed. “We should be telling the banks to provide free education and build new universities with all the money they take from the people. “Let us not let evil and hatred swallow us. Africans must resist deadly hatred and bitterness. Africa is ours and we must share it and its resources. Today, Somalia, Pakistan, or Zambia need our help - tomorrow it might be us. Let us say ‘no’ to xenophobia and stop killing foreigners.”

Unpaid workers blame Emfuleni Municipality Lazarus Dithagiso

VEREENIGING. - Employees claim they were not paid for two month by the Emfuleni Local Municipality, ELM. In this way they vented their frustration on ELM and not on the paymaster ELM had retained to pay them out. Employees did not hold responsible the Specialised Violation System, SVS, but, instead of blaming the Emfuleni’s service provider SVS, workers who are supposed to be collecting over R1 million monthly

from ELM say they have not been paid for two months. When confronted by Sedibeng Ster, Emfuleni Public Safety MMC Councillor Velly Mcera said it is not his duty to speak publicly about the service provider. Mcera could not confirm or deny that local government had not paid the service provider.“Yes,” said Mcera, “SVS is the service provider collecting the debt on behalf of the Emfuleni. They are contracted to Emfuleni and are

based in our building. The SVS has never brought complaints around payment to our attention. We did not hire the employees of SVS. We hired a company. Should the workers have concerns regarding their payments. They are at liberty to approach this company.” Mcera did not want to be dragged into the matter of saying the municipality had not paid the service provider: “The problem with the service provider might be that they don’t communicate with

their workers. They always pull away from telling the truth. Workers are advised to communicate with the employer. “As the municipality we never anticipated any lack of service from the said company. I do not work in Human Resources or in the municipal manager’s office.” The question, for example, of how much the company collects per month is out of his jurisdiction. The SVS service provider could not be reached for comment.

AFTER ONE WEEK OF SPECIAL PRAYERS

"MY EX-HUSBAND RETURNED HOME" As divorced mother of 2 kids, for 5 years I went through a lot of problems financially and worse after my divorce several men kept breaking my heart. I nearly committed suicide but thought of my kids. I visited many healers and priests but got no results. Lucky a granny from my neighbourhood took me to Isaac. I paid R100 consultation fee and without me speaking a word, he showed me all my problems in a mirror and water, plus real-faces of people pulling me down. Sebokeng Wedding Expo a success SEBOKENG. - The recent Sebokeng Wedding Expo at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre was a big hit and exhibitors got to show off their products and market themselves. They got the opportunity to show those who plan to get ‘hitched’ in the near future why they should use their services. Everyone who attended this expo had a blast. They can only agree that they were satisfied, that they definitely got some great ideas, and that exhibitors could expect a call from them. The models ‘wowed’ the crowd with their attire, so the designers, make-up artists and everyone involved should be really proud. What an amazing event!

Women are powerful beyond measure Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - “Don’t tell me who you are, based on the standard of the world and society. Tell me who God says you are and what powerful women you are.” These were the words of Sebokeng SAPS boss Brigadier Jan Petrus Scheepers, the main speaker at a Mothers Day celebration on Friday. He referred to the Psalm of David about a capable wife: “God has given you capability

and it is up to you to take what the Almighty says about you and live according to His word. The world can try to describe and define you, but you are not what the world sees, you are what God says you are,” said Scheepers to the multitude that attended the Mothers Day celebration. The event was conducted by the wellknown Lieutenant-Colonel Maria Mazibuko. She explained that a mother is a motivator,

organiser, teacher, helper, economist and responsible person. She further gave the house an opportunity to celebrate by singing and praising God, dedicating their lives to Him and their families. A special young woman and also an entrepreneur, Barbie Thekiso from Breeze Cleaning, encouraged the house with her business success story: “Breeze Cleaning is a domestic cleaning company. We do what you don’t want to do.

There’s a limited amount of water on earth. And if we run out of water, we run out of life. No-one can create it and nothing can replace it. But we can all save it. Visit bethehero.co.za and see how the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.

*Estimated saving per month. Dependant on factors like water pressure, diameters of pipes etc.

“We provide a service to middle class people who are too busy to do domestic work.” Thekiso encouraged fellow mothers to think out of the box. Sergeant Maria Molefi concluded the event by thanking all the mothers who attended. “We are special people in our families and society. Let God define you. Do not let anyone discourage you. Through you God is powerful beyond measure.”

Business in fashion VUT students VANDERBILJPARK .- The Bishop Tutu Hall in VUT was parked half full by student fashion-lovers recently. This was when they attended a fashion and business event hosted by business and fashion students. The event was so well organised and successful that it promises to become an annual occasion. It showcased young and untested fashion designers, reports Bonginkosi Ripinga, now the show director/ student and model. It was a musical and entertainment fashion statement gala. All fashion designers lived up to expectations. It was great show for students who attended the event and parents who supported their children.“We are very grateful for the support we got. We are planning to do this event every year. We are still young in the industry and we want to learn

as students. Fashion is part of talent but, at the end of the day, it should be a business,” said Tebogo Ngwenyama, a creator of the show. Victor Masombuko, part of the creative team, says a number of fashion designers were willing to showcase their work: “Fashion needs business acumen - marketing and ability.” He further said they used fashion models from school to further showcase their talent as some are taking fashion modelling seriously. Business speakers said a word or two to encourage students to pursue their careers and love what they do. The showcase was further graced by the always-funny comedian Mduduzi Mabaso, who set the house on fire with his jokes keeping audience awake.

SASOLBURG. - On May 16 Zio’s in Sasolburg, will host its 12th annual Fun Run and 10km Road Race with the Sasolburg Athletics Club. Apart from the regular shorter races, they have added a 21km race this year. “We are pleased to announce that we have been chosen to host a 21km race which will take place on the same day. “This 21km race is proudly brought to you by the Free State Athletics Organizing Body and will be part of the Free State Championships,” says owner Christo Ziotopolous. You can register that day for the 21km and 10km race as early as 06:00 on the morning of Saturday, May 16, at the Flavius Mareka

SEDIBENG STER

Sports Grounds in Hertzog Street, Sasolburg, and the official race will begin at 7:45 for the 21km at 8:00 for the 10km and at 8:15 for the Fun Run. A thousand T-shirts and medals will be handed out in different categories on race day. The prize money at stake totals a tidy sum of R17 500 for both the 21km and 10km Race. In the 10km race, for example, the prize money is R1 250 for the first man and first lady home, R600 for the man and lady in second place, R350 for those in the third and R250 in the fourth place. But that’s not all. There are many more prizes such as for juniors and veterans in different age groups. There are similar, slightly higher prizes for

17

the first five positions (different categories for men and women) as well as for juniors and veterans for the 21km race. Anybody, from juniors to pensioners, is welcome to take part in the fun run and races. Those who would like to participate in the Fun Run may bring children along as well as prams and strollers as Zio would like to make this a family event. Regretfully no animals will be allowed. You may dress up for the Fun Run as the Best Dressed will receive a prize. Schools are also welcome to participate as the school that brings the most students will receive a prize too. * For more information kindly contact Catia Nunes on 072 052 6206 or visit www.zio.co.za

Esokwazi School crowned Sedibeng Coca Cola champion Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Esokwazi Secondary School will represent Sedibeng in the Coca Cola Provincial Play-Offs. This was after this Zone 7-based secondary school executed this feat during the Coca Cola regional playoffs at Cecil Oldridge Park Stadium this past weekend. The school won all their group-stage matches before they beat Mohloli Secondary School 2 - 0 on penalties in what can only be dubbed a very exciting final to watch. This will not be the first time the school has represented Sedibeng in a highprofile school soccer tournament. Last year the school represented this region in the McDonald U/16 Tournament hosted by Sedibeng. This was before they lost to Prestigious College in the final. However, the school’s achievement can be attributed to their head coach William “Vecks” Gumula, who has also coached one of the most successful academies – the Evaton Youth Development Academy -

in this region. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Gumula says he credited the school’s success to the players and the fighting spirit they showed during the tournament. He also thanks school principals and teachers for their support. However, it is important to note that the majority of players in the team were from the Evaton Youth Academy. This makes sense, taking into consideration the success of the school: “I must say, these boys really made all of us proud, not only the Zone 7 community, but the entire Sedibeng community, for qualifying for another major soccer tournament. The fighting spirit was unbelievable during the tournament and winning all the group-stage games was the highlight of the day. I must thank everyone who contributed to the success of the team from preparation to the day of the tournament. It was a team effort.”

Sponsorship bears fruit Lerato Serero

VANDERBIJLPARK.- Air Products South Africa once again demonstrated its ongoing support of young agriculture students with the sponsorship of Inmed’s aquaponics unit at Carel de Wet High School in Vanderbijlpark recently. Inmed, a global children’s organisation, launched the unit in August 2013 in partnership with Air Products South Africa, in order to introduce students to aquaponics, an agri-

cultural technique that combines aquaculture and soilless crop growing. The aquaponics project has generated much interest overall among students taking agriculture as a school subject. The first group of students, Grade 10 and 11 learners at the school, who are studying agriculture as a subject, were recently honoured at an awards ceremony. Of the 16 students who took part, 12 received graduation certificates while the remain-

der received participation certificates. Grade 10 pupil Matshepo Maduna clindched top honours with her impressive 95% mark. “It has been an honour to be involved in this exciting initiative, which teaches young people an innovative and environmentallyfriendly method of farming to help combat hunger among communities in our country,” said Josua le Roux, General Manager: Central Support at Air Products South Africa. The aquaponics training programme includes a combination of ‘hands-on’, practical experience at the school’s farming facility, plus a theoretical component. Air Products South Africa’s sponsorship has paid for the training and the development of course material. In addition, Air Products donated a gift voucher for each student who achieved a pass mark of 80% and above, and a prize for the top student. “As a company, we feel strongly that the key to a healthy and sustainable future lies in developing our youth, thereby allowing them to become resourceful and self-reliant,” Le Roux concludes.

Grade 10 pupil Matshepo Maduna of Carel De Wet High, who received top honours, is presented with her award by Barry Little, Project Director at Air Products South Africa.

Touchl i ne

The status quo of football in this region leaves much to be desired, to say the least. TOUCHLINE recommended that Safa Sedibeng be put under administration by the Safa national office for the following reasons: “To inquire into the administrative and/or financial affairs of Members, and, where necessary, to recommend corrective measures in this regard and, should these measures not be implemented, to take over the administrative and/ or financial affairs of the Members until these are placed on a satisfactory footing.” TOUCHLINE has learned that Safa national office to this end appointed Andile Ndengezi

SEDIBENG STER

Everyone should be put under administration

as Regional Administrator with all the powers of the Regional Executive Committee. In fact, Ndengezi has been granted 60 days to restore the normal functions of the Region. This is a bad time for Sedibeng football, taking into consideration that this is a `first’. It is the first time this region has been put under administration by the Safa national office. This region once had academic administrators such as Molefi Oliphant who went on to be a household name in South African football as Safa President. However, lately, our football has been run by any Tom, Dick or Harry. No longer are there football administrators who put the interests of football first, as was

the case in the past. TOUCHLINE had an interesting discussion with some former local football administrators regarding the status quo of our football. They say there is an embarrassing situation in football where “nobody” can be elected or appointed to run it.The Safa constitution has been ignored, undermined and flouted by the very people voted into power by those “ghost” teams.TOUCHLINE believes that the likes of Ntate George Thabe would turn angrily in their graves if they could see what was happening to our football. Ntate Thabe, Molefi Oliphant, Knocks Matjila and many others, were the most respected football administrators in this country.TOUCHLINE challenges

all former administrators to come forward to intervene and help restore the pride of football in this region. How can one explain this – the football association is run by the club owners, which is something against the Safa constitution. This is a conflict of interest in football, to say the least. If Safa Sedibeng is under administration, surely our local football association also needs to be investigated. Some football administrators have turned football into a narrative that orbits their personal egos. TOUCHLINE believes everyone should be put under administration in this region including our LFAs, because some of them are not functioning.

Athletics need financial injection Ncala Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - Sandile Ncala says they are still deeply involved in the development of sport in this region. This was how the veteran athletics administrator responded to TOUCHLINE’s recent article, which was headlined “Where have they gone?”

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Ncala says the only challenge they face is lack of sponsorship for township athletics clubs. He says they are still much involved in the development of athletics and they still host some of the meetings/races in Sedibeng. “After I saw the TOUCHLINE comment recently I thought I must come forward be-

cause the article challenged many of us, even those who have since given up athletics. I’m happy that such an article came out because some of us are still involved in the development of athletics in this region. Our main problem is a lack of financial muscle and there is nothing we can do. We have tried everything we can but our

township business people seem not care about the sport. Sport people are the very same people who support their businesses but they don’t want to plough back into the community. Yes, there are those who contribute to the sport, but others do nothing about this matter,” says Ncala.

Open Zone 10 Golf Course for players: DA Zacharia Nale

SEBOKENG. - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has made a special plea to the Emfuleni Local Municipality to re-open Sebokeng’s Zone 10 nine-hole golf course. This golf course was one of the best in Sedibeng before neglect set in.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, DA representative Teboho Maraka believes the course could be utilised by all people around the area. He stresses further that the young could use the golf course as a development and, furthermore, for competitions:“The course has not being maintained for ages, to the extent that

some golfers don’t even know that the municipality zoned that area for a golf course before 1994. DA wants Emfuleni to fence it and maintain it.“As things stand we have only the Evaton Golf Course, though its condition also leaves much to be desired.”Sedibeng has six golf courses: Meyerton, Emfuleni, Vander-

bijlpark, Riviera Golf Course in Vereeniging, Maccauvlei Vaal and Evaton Golf Course. Maraka says it would be appreciated if the municipality could speed up the request to reopen the Zone 10, Sebokeng nine-hole golf course, which could be turned into a full 18hole course.

Congratulations Fikile Unifire Zulu, for this month’s winning story! Situated not far from Sebokeng, Evaton West commonly known as Mkhelele is a developing black neighbourhood. It is divided into extensions to easily identify different areas within. It has been in existence for at least 18 years. There are a number of small businesses on every street, has three primary schools, one high school, a skills development centre, a mobile clinic and a community hall. You’ll also find kids enjoying a game or two of skipping “kgathi” or soccer tournaments however there’s a massive need for resources that young people urgently seek; a library and a recreational/ sports centre where they can be able to excersize their talents that often go unnoticed. Not turning a blind eye to the level of substance abuse and crime it tears the community apart. Nyaope drains life out of young people on a daily basis. Evaton West is a place where stars are born but many don’t seem to realise their potential to shine. You hear of colourful dreams and see hopeful faces but who can they turn to in order to turn those dreams into reality? That’s where role models and mentors come in. Opportunities arise all the time, only a few are able to get them. I know we have a long way to go but as a developing community we are on our way there. Unity speaks volumes. Relegated NWU FC entertains local spectators Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Despite playing entertaining football NWU Vaal FC suffered another defeat at the hands of Soweto Panthers FC in the ABC Motsepe League match played at the Vaal Campus on Saturday. The latter languishes at the bottom of the ABC Motsepe League log and - with four games left – The team is heading for relegation. Many ask themselves how the team finds itself in this kind of situation, considering the kind of football they displayed recently. This was one game that kept students - who came in numbers to support their team - on the edge of their seats. It was endto-end staff with the home team toying with their opponents for the better part of the game, until its dying minutes when the visitors scored the winner, much to disappointment of home supporters. However, it was too late for their darling team as it will campaign in the lower division next season. To date, NWU clinched ABC Motsepe League status at the beginning of the season, Now ironically the club will be relegated at the end of the season, having spent only a season in this league. NWU Vaal head coach Thomas Thema says they have learned a lot in the league and this will help them going forward.
