Stepfather beats 9 yearold to death Moleboheng Chaha

SHARPEVILLE. - An Emmanuel Primary School learner Katleho Mofokeng (9) of Putswa Stena, Sharpeville lost his life over the weekened after apparently being severely beaten by his stepfather. Katleho had allegedly stolen R200 from his stepfather, which resulted in the father beating him in an attempt to discipline him. Bereaved mother Malefu Mofokeng said she was still in shock over what had unfolded, leading to the death of her son. “Katleho’s father on Friday called me to ask about the missing money. When I told him I did not know anything about the money, he told me he suspected that the kids had stolen the money and he said he was going to beat them,” says the distraught mother adding that when she got home from work on Friday, she found Katleho in bed, shaking: “I thought he was cold so I covered him with blankets. My husband told me that he had beaten him as he was the one who had stolen the money. At 03:00 in the early morning of Saturday, I heard my boy coughing, and I went to go and check on him.” The mother adds that she only

realised that something was wrong with her son at about 06:00 the next morning when she checked up on him as she prepared to go to work. “Katleho had suddenly gotten very cold. I called the ambulance for him. When emergency personnel arrived, they declared my son dead. That’s when we all saw how badly he had been beaten. He had bruises all over his body. I asked them if there was anything they could do, but they told me that my son had died some four to five hours ago. My husband immediately put his hands on his head and asked, “What have I done? “He was very remorseful.” Family spokesperson Millicent Moso says that the entire family was shocked and deeply hurt: “We know our brother to be a very calm person. This is very unlike him. We are sure he did not mean for things to turn out this way, which is why he surrendered to Police without resisting. We hope that we can get through this as a family.” The stepfather was arrested the same day. 9yearold Katleho Mofokeng apparently died after a severe beating by his stepfa ther. Photo: Supplied.

‘Take Charge Campaign’ Priest and wife arrested for fake money by MEC Mahlangu Mduduzi Mathebula

SEBOKENG. - Gauteng Department of Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu on behalf of Premier David Makhura has urged residents of Sebokeng not look away when acts of crime happen in their areas. Mahlangu spoke boldly to the masses in a very intensive and hotly debated

event at the Zone 7 Stadium recently. The stadium was packed to capacity and all delegates honoured the invitation of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety under the leadership of MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane. “We are here as the provincial government to commit ourselves to playing a role to make sure crime becomes history in South Africa. Turning a blind eye and saying ‘It doesn’t affect me’ is very wrong. Crime affects everyone, rich or poor.” The MEC further called on communities to declare war on corruption and bribery, and make this province safe. Community Safety MMC Veli Mcera urged the communities to refrain from buying stolen goods because people who do so are not different from those who steal: “Drive out criminals in our communities. Crime stops with you.” Reverend Gift Moerane, for faith-based organisations, said it was time people reclaimed the streets from criminals. “Stop buying back-door stuff or stolen goods as people die when criminal acts take place.” Amongst those in support of the campaign were Safa CEO Dennis Mumble, Izinduna, labour, traditional leaders, arts and recreation and others, community policing forums (CPF’s). All collectively stated that crime should be everyone’s business.

ORANGE FARM. - A man of the cloth and his wife appeared in the Magistrates Court on charges of fraud on Friday. A case of fraud was lodged by the Orange Farms Police on Wednesday, which led to the arrest of the Extension 9 priest and his wife on Wednesday. Apparently the priest and his wife went to a popular filling station in Orange Farm where they paid with a fake R200 note. The petrol attendant notified the couple of the fake note, of which they denied knowledge. According to filling station management during the money check-up, shortages led them to look at CCV footage and it was then established that the couple were indeed behind the fake note.

Police killings speed up Mduduzi Mathebula

ORANGE FARM. - Thursday morning sadly increased the number of police officers killed on duty. This caused something of a national outcry, including comment from state president Jacob Zuma. Railway officer Constable Mahlari was killed on duty at Stratford Train Station in Orange Farm extension 2. Apparently eight suspects are on the loose after executing an officer in the line of duty and attempting to kill another. These suspects face heavy charges as the Orange Farms Police Detectives are investigating three counts of armed robbery, attempted murder, murder and business robbery. Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Motsiri says Police launched a manhunt for the suspects after the police officers were attacked on responding to a call from train station guards after midnight. “One police officer was shot in the upper body and died at the scene,” declared Motsiri. He adds that another officer was seriously assaulted, and was taken to the local hospital in a serious but stable condition. Motsiri: “Their firearms were taken. It was also later established that a guard’s firearm at the station was also seized.” The heavily armed suspects fled the scene on foot. The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba called on people to rally around the police: “Police are being attacked by heavily armed gangs and any information that may lead to the recovery of these firearms will be rewarded.” On Saturday Motsiri confirmed that another police officer was attacked at Orange Farm Extension 4 while off duty. He was attacked by taxi drivers in broad daylight and severely as-

saulted. The police officer’s firearm was taken in the process. He was hospitalised. Two suspects were arrested but the firearm is still missing.

The filling station management lodged a case with Police and the priest and his wife were brought to book. Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Motsiri says Police deployed members to investigate the case and a warrant to search the house of the couple was executed: “We raided the house of the priest and his wife and a safe containing counterfeit onehundred-rand and two-hundred rand notes were recovered. Both people were detained immediately.”

should build new houses for them as the area is problematic and gets flooded whenever it rains. Mankununu Samane, one of the people saying RDP houses should be built, states that many of the residents have lost their furniture as a result of the water that always gets into the hostel when it rains. Lilly Lehoko states that she is happy to stay at the hostel because she has already renovated her section into the house of her dreams. Emfuleni Local Municipality’s (ELM) head of communications, Stanley Gaba says, “All the hostels in Emfuleni are going to be audited in order to determine the kind of development needed with regards to both infrustructural and Human Settlements Develoment.” Gaba further states that the hostels will be converted into family units. “Just like Kwamasiza Hostel which is soon to be handed over after its refurbishment, all the other hostels are going to be renovated and residents will be allocated accordingly,” ends Gaba, adding that title deeds will only be handed over after all the These residents from Boipatong Zone 4 say they can not processes he has mentiwait to be moved to RDP houses. This comes after other residents who were financially able decided to make renovations to the rooms that had been allocated to them, transforming them into proper houses. These residents are now saying that - should RDP houses be built for them - they will not move as they are now comfortable at the hostel and only require title deeds from government. ZAMDELA. - Hundreds of thousands of the community, especially women from all walks of life, came to see and listen to the president of the Republic of South Africa. Jacob Zuma was accompanied by his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa and the newly elected office bearers of the African National Congress Women’ League. This year the Women’s Day national celebration with the theme ‘Women United in Moving South Africa Forward’ was hosted at the Harry Gwala Multi-purpose Sports Centre on Sunday. The president of the ANC Women’ League, Bathabile Dlamini, cursed violence against women and children: “Men must think twice before they attack women. We want to see the children living in a peaceful environment with no drugs. We are going to rally around and mobilise women to fight any oppression of men and women. The ANCWL calls upon men to look after their children. Those men not willing will be brought to book.” In his speech, Zuma praised the role played by women who took the lead

during the struggle to free the country. He said there is still more to be done to empower women: “Women always keep the edge of the knives sharp. They are there when there’s a threat. They give their time to the liberation movement without compensation or reward. They did it to perpetuate freedom from the chains of apartheid. Women should not be belittled. Their involvement in discussions over politics, decision making, law making and justice, is valued. Our economy is not growing enough to create jobs. “We urge the business sector to refrain from retrenchments that will seriously affect the social life, the economic life and the community in general.” Among the guests was the Gauteng MEC for Social Development Faith Mazibuko, Premier of North West Supra Mahumapelo. The new ANCWL office bearers are Bathabile Dlamini (president), Sisi Ntombela (deputy president), Meokgo Matuba (secretary), Weziwe Tikane (deputy secretary), Maite Nkoana -Mashobane (treasure).

The excessive rate at which South African police officers are killed in the line of duty must be considered a national crisis. Let us stop turning a blind eye to what you are seeing. Let us also stop thinking that it will all just go away. Look at the pain and suffering that the families of these officers are going through, all in the name of protecting us.

5

This is going too far What has this world come to! We have left ourselves with no freedom of choice or belief. When will we decide to STAND UP AND STOP THIS MASSACRE!! More than 50 police officers have died in the line of duty this year. This is enough! The general society seems to be relaxed about Police deaths. Also at the rate at which our police officers are dying, questions must arise about training, arrest methods and crime scene operating procedures. Too often police are ‘caught by surprise’

or robbed and killed for their guns. I agree with one columnist who says that our legislators must consider laws that will make the killing of a police officer a special crime. We are the first to ‘toyi-toyi’ for service delivery and electricity cut-offs. We are the first ones to bring up racism in our society, and pin to the floor any race attacking our own. We fight over a parking space that some guy sneakily snuck into, right in front of you. We go ‘animal like’ in some of these situations. We will fight and hold grudges from

that day forth. Yet here we sit back and watch criminals savagely murder our Police. Please use your voice to make a difference. If enough people make enough noise, we could raise a figurative army that would not be stopped by anything. Let’s take the lives of these officers into consideration. Let us use all forms of social media to try and make a voice loud enough for everyone to hear. Police killings must stop! Lerato...

Residents complain about services Moleboheng Chaha

VEREENIGING. - It is now clear that the Vereeniging community is not happy with the lack of service delivery in the area. This comes after a list of concerns was handed over to Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Ward 15 Councillor Stanley Mashabela in a memorandum. The memorandum listed water leakages, potholes, exorbitant municipal electricity tarriffs and the high crime rate in the area as some of the problem areas. The community also requests that previous amounts owed to the municipality by residents be removed as Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) was billing them on estimations. Residents claim that the reading of electricity meters only started this year. The community is also asking for the relevant department within the municipality not to allow prostitutes to conduct business in the street as this can affect their kids in many ways. Mashabela says some problems listed in the

memo can be handled by the community, but that he will escalate the issues of service delivery to the relevant ELM departments. ELM media relations officer Chuchi Radebe

says, “Not all residents were billed on estimations. This method of billing was and is only used in cases where the municipality could not access the household readings.”

Radebe adds that it is unlikely for Vereeniging to receive electricity from any other service provider as ELM is the authorised electricity service provider for Vereeniging,”

Prison not your dwelling correctional services Mduduzi Mathebula

SEDIBENG. - YB20 and Hope FM embarked on a profound initiative from prison to presidency on recently at the Juvenile Correctional Centre at Groenpunt. The bible teaches us of Joseph who was given the governorship of Egypt in the book of Genesis 41: 37-44. The Juvenile Hall was packed to capacity with young energetic offenders who were graced by words of encouragement and inspiration from different dignitaries. The programme was led by Hope Fm breakfast show host Motseki Mabuya and his team. These young offenders were asked to elaborate on their dreams to ensure they did not languish in prison forever. Mosele Maloka from MCD Training Centre - an engineering company in Meyerton - spoke about skills development programmes that would enhance the vitality of education among these young offenders: “Education plays a vital role in our lives. As the MCD we are embarking on helping these young future role models. Prison should not be an obstacle to their lives but should be a learning curve.” The offenders were given a chance to

speak and elaborate on their dreams to the house, which was very emotional and the entire house brooded with sympathy. Mabuya says this initiative was to show these young offenders that there is life beyond prison, which is not their dwelling place.

Schools of the future launched MIDVAAL. - The principal of Meyerton High, Mabitsela Koma recently expressed his gratitude for the choice as a pilot school for the newly launched “All Grade 12 Township Schools Go Digital.” Koma committed himself, his staff and his pupils to using the technology to improve results at their school. This forms part of the Gauteng Department of Education’s process to establish “schools of the future” around the Province. This phase of the initiative targets no-fee -paying schools and township schools that achieved 100% pass rates in 2014, and involves equipping each learner with a tablet,

each teacher with a laptop and each classroom with a smart board. The theme adopted by the Department is ‘connected for life’, with the aim of creating an inclusive education system in the province, which can break the cycle of poverty and unemployment. The launch at Meyerton High School included a tour of the digitally equipped classrooms, where invited guests could sit in on classes and observe the ways in which the technology is used to enhance lessons. A special assembly was held in which Midvaal’s Mayor, Bongani Baloyi, addressed the school and encouraged teachers and students to embrace the opportunity being given to them, using it to achieve excellent matric results and ensuring their own brighter futures. “Parents and school governing bodies have also been included throughout the implementation process, and their representatives attended the assembly to show their support, and recognition of the fact that parents and communities are integral to enMidvaal Mayor, Councillor Bongani Baloyi (front far left) sits couraging study and proin on a matric biology class to observe how the smartboard viding support to young enhances learning. learners.”

SHARPEVILLE. - The Saint Johns in Jerusalem Church based in Tshepiso phase 2 under the leadership of Bishop Wander Tejane chose a unique way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sharpeville church. The event was held in the Sharpeville Hall recently. This was by bringing various indigenous gospel music choirs from various areas in Sedibeng into one venue. This celebratory event marked the revival of gospel choirs in the region. Marry Makwetlane, organiser at the church, says, “This event started with a

workshop where the different choirs were equiped with leadership and basic music skills by the Bishop. Today is the final day, where 16 choirs have shown up to showcase their different musical talents.” The choirs got to perform in two rounds and got to sing different songs of their choice. Makwetlane stated that the choirs would not compete but that judgment would be on the perfomances to determine each group’s weaknesses and strong points. The differrent members of the choirs stated that they were delighted to get a chance to perfom at the event.

VANDERBIJLPARK. - ‘Don’t let the pain of the past punish your present and paralyse your future,’ said Dan Sothoane, managing director of the MCD Training Centre of Meyerton. Tilberg University students from the Netherlands established the ‘Lend a Hand’ nonprofit organisation to help those less fortunate. Together with MCD Training, they brought smiles to the Emfuleni Shelter for Boys when they donated full school uniforms recently. Maximilian de Vreeze, Berry Sonnenschein, Livia Kaiser and Walter Pasquarelli were students from Tilburg University. Before handing the uniforms to 11 children, Dutch Matsaletsa, coordinator, encouraged the children not to be held back by the past. He said their past cannot determine their future. ‘The past will make you happy for a time but the future is in your hands,’ he

said. “Those who do not want to succeed in life have plenty of time to sleep.” Matsaletsa said the only way to succeed at school is to stay focused on any task, Sothoane said the reason they are distributing uniforms is to boost the children’s confidence and close the gap. He said the Boys Shelter is very close to his heart. Dorcas Raditsela, a social worker, applauded the company and the youth from the Netherlands for their contribution. She said this was the beginning of great things to come. Walter Pasquarelli on behalf of the guests from Stichting ‘Lend a Hand’ encouraged the youth to make sure they finished what they had started educationally. He explained that they could not change where they had come from, but they could make where they are going a better place. Crystal Eye and Mokgotamish aim at the vision of struggling learners Mduduzi Mathebula

ORANGE FARM. - Ten Reitumetse Primary School learners were graced by Crystal Eye and Makgotamisha Building and Construction. This was on Tuesday when they received spectacles. The school was visited by the two companies earlier this year as part of the companies’ social community services SCSs. Ten learners who were struggling with vision in their different capacities were elected as recipients of something that would change their lives. The surprise visit by the two companies astonished the school principal and staff members. Bethe Lehoko from Crystal Eye says as a company they embarked on an initiative in cooperation

with Makgotamisha Building and Construction. “And out of numerous meetings and intensive research a great idea was birthed to give to learners something valuable that elevated education,” says Lehoko, who further praised the donation of the building and construction company. Kuhlula Khoza, Selicy Phiri, Lesego Mavundla, Ben Phumza, Lebogang Gumede, Andile Nguse,Lerato Semela, Beloved Bhunu, Sanel Mtshali, and Thabang Mdluli were the recipients of the spectacles. School principal Ntombikayise Mtombeni was thrilled: “This donation will boost my children’s confidence. I’m very happy for them.” Makgotamish Building and Construction representatives were present during the hand-over.

Meeting for artists SEDIBENG. - Vaal Creative Industries Network will be having a general meeting on August 13 at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14 at 14:00. The purpose of the meeting is to outline their plan for the year and introduce the committee to spearhead the network. They therefore urge all artists both active and inactive to grace them with their presence, to come and share more ideas

as to how they can move forward in making sure that they grow their sector. Members say artists should show solidarity and unity in strengthening their sector and making sure that they keep their flag flying high in the artistic spectrum. Reeducating arts and culture in schools Mduduzi Mathebula

Matsie SteynKopanong Primary School pupils and their mentors stand proud follo wing the good results they attained in the recent expo for young scientists.

Developing future scientists Lerato Serero

SHARPEVILLE. - Some projects of young pupils of the Matsie Steyn-Kopanong Primary School came out tops at the recent ‘Expo For Young Scientists’ in Vereeniging. Three of these pupils won awards and qualify for a trip overseas at the international Science Fare. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Humphrey Ramone, who is a Science Consultant and one the people responsible for the expo says that the country is in need of young

VEREENIGING. - Gauteng Department of Education Sedibeng District East held a threeday arts festival programme called the Segarona Youth Arts Festival in the Vereeniging Civic Theatre. Speaking to festival facilitator Thabang Letlaka, who has been in arts for years as an educator, the initiative started ten years ago. “The drive is still there. We want to reeducate Art as a subject from primary to university level. Not all learners are good at Maths and Science but they might be good at Art. However, education is vital to everything,” says Letlaka, who is mentored by Nolwandle Utloa, DSEF Manager. This particular festival was graced by great artist Maritjie Bothma, who has been seen in numerous commercials, by Will Sejake fore-

ver the Vaal’s finest Joyous Celebration lead singer and solo artist, and many others. Letleka further emphasised that the festival caters for learners from the lower grades to high schools (grades 5 to 12). The three-day arts festival contained poems, drama, music and dance. “We wanted to have 87 schools participating. However, we managed to get 35 energetic schools that are keen to compete at the highest level and to elevate their talent to greater heights,” says Letlaka seconded by Bothma. She adds that it’s a very great initiative for the department to introduce Art to the primary schools, substantially closing the gap between urban and township schools. The panel of judges, who are local artists will select the outstanding school acts to represent the region at provincial level.

scientists and that young pupils should be taught at a young age that there in nothing to be feared when it comes to Science. They should also be encouraged to take up subjects that are aligned with it. “The young ones should definitely be coached to follow the path of Science and they should also know that this is the future and more and more young black scientists are needed by South Africa. This is also a good platform for them to showcase their talents,” Ramone says.

Congratulations Duncan Sinthumule, for this month’s winning story! We are all walking and breathing on this world, but it feels like the world is walking and breathing heavily on our shoulders. The burden each day is coupled with more pressure to excel, succeed, inspire and captivate. Each day is stapled with difficulties and heart-warming experiences, but at the end of it all one needs a perfect day in the park. A perfect day characterized by gentleness, harmony and ease. On this day, I get to spend time with peaceful creatures, hear the gentle cheers from trees, listen to unforgettable harmonics from the birds, and finally breathe in fresh air with contentiousness. A simple perfect day in the park revives me, it re-inspires, energizes, and puts my soul back at ease. The sight of happy families having mini-picnics, kids playing tirelessly, dog-walkers brushing their fluffy beasts gently and aged folks sharing memorable stories. That is enough to make a person like me want to live more and share this perfect day in the park with many others. Duncan Sinthumule

Sedibeng Ster blows the whistle against crime SEDIBENG. - The staff members of Sedibeng Ster, in support of Women’s Month, distributed 100 whistles to members of the communities of Joko Tea near Bophelong and Phumasbethane in Sharpeville. These are but two areas that are rife with crime and staff members believe that the whistles will go a long way toward helping combat crime in those areas. “We do not

have gold or silver to give these members of the community but we believe that with these whistles a certain percentage of crime in these areas will be reduced,” says Lerato Serero, Sedibeng Ster News Editor. Members of the community can blow these whistle as and when crime is being committed so that they can get help from other members of the community.

TshabanguDingaan gets best Women’s Day present Zacharia Nale

MEYERTON. - Langi Tshabangu-Dingaan received the best Women’s Day present she could have envisaged. This was when she was elected the Midvaal Local Football Association’s first deputy chairperson during the association elections on Women’s Day. These tense elections at the Midvaal Municipality saw Mokoena Mokoena re-elected chairperson of the Association, beating Carthy Pekkuer by 18 - 13 votes. Tempers flared but thanks to the Safa national representatives – Anthony Reevs (Safa provincial chairman) and Andile Ndengezi (Safa Sedibeng regional administrator) - the smooth running of the election was ensured, regardless of dissatisfaction expressed by certain individuals. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Tshabangu-Dingaan said she was honoured to be elected as the Association’s first deputy chairperson. She promises to change the face of Midvaal football, especially women’s football, in the area.

“I’m very grateful to be elected as the first deputy chairperson. This shows how teams have faith in me. I won’t disappoint them. It is not that they are doing women a favour. They know I’m capable of taking Midvaal football to the next level.” Kwanele Buhle Mkhonza is another woman who was elected additional executive committee member. Meanwhile, speaking after election as chairperson to run the Midvaal Local Football Association for the next four years, Mokoena was optimistic that together they would transform Midvaal football. He called for unity among the people who are involved in the development of football in Midvaal, He urged them to set their differences aside for the sake of football. Sam Mofokeng was also elected deputy president of the Association. Former Bafana Bafana Captain Aaron ‘Mbazo’ Mokoena was among those who came to observe. He was a special guest of the newly elected chairman.

Hlongwane’s suspension lifted Zacharia Nale

SEDIBENG. - In a dramatic turn of events Safa Sedibeng general secretary Star Hlongwane’s suspension was lifted. A letter written to Holngwane by Safa Sedibeng administrator Andile Ndengezi reads as follows: “We refer to you correspondence dated 17 June of 2015 requesting us to set aside or uplift your indefinite suspension. It seems to us that the suspension in 2014 has been overtaken by events.” It continues: “The regional Executive

Committee of Safa Sedibeng no longer exists and therefore your continued suspension does not make sense to us. We therefore see no reason not to consider setting aside that suspension. You are free to participate in all football activities as you deem fit.” Hlongwane was suspended by former Safa Sedibeng President Xolani Mtumtum and his executive members for allegedly putting the region into disrepute after he challenged executive members on certain issues including the lottery money.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Hlongwane said he knew his suspension wasn’t constitutional but based on a personal vendetta against him: “I was suspended for telling the truth because I couldn’t simply cross my arms while some executive members misused association money meant for the development of football in this region. I’m happy that finally justice was done and I want to thank all those people who supported and believed in me,” says Hlongwane. As things stand the troublesome Safa Sedi-

beng is under administrators as Safa’s national office investigates the entire executive for maladministration. Sedibeng Ster Sport has learned that the date for Safa Sedibeng’s AGM has been set to elect a new executive committee. As has always been the case all these years, local football administrators had secret meetings to come up with their own candidates, who will run the sinking Safa Sedibeng ship. Sedibeng Ster Sport can confirm that Star “Comrade” Hlongwane is one of the candidates for Safa Sedibeng president.

Some of the top clubs, who have since confirmed their participation - according to Sandile Ncala - includes Emfuleni, the Vaal Athletics Club, Nedbank, VUT and the Mittal Athletics Club, to mention just a few. The red-hot favourites in the sub-junior category are Mpho Molaetsa and, in the masters section, is

evergreen Ernest Tjela, who won the SA 21km championship last week in Port Elizabeth. Ncala says they are expecting stiff competition with big-name runners set to take part in this meeting come Saturday: “I’m looking forward to the exciting cross country championship because many local runners have shown interest in participating. This is one event that tests athletes’ characters and their level of fitness going to the next level. I can’t wait for Saturday to see the best-of-the-best in the Sedibeng region when it comes to cross country in all divisions – both boys and girls, and senior men, women and veterans.”

‘Active Aging’ Games Zacharia Nale

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Isak Steyl Stadium was recently a hive of activity for elderly people when Gauteng’s provincial Department of Sports hosted the ‘Active Aging’ Games. It was a fun-filled day for elders who converged from various Sedibeng NGOs. Some of the sporting activities in which they participated were athletics and soccer, to mention

but two. The most interesting part was during Athletics, which showed some of them looking strong and healthy. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, some old people said it has been a while since they participated in this kind of activity. They said they were grateful to the Department of Sports and Recreation for organising such an initiative.
